in our area have all been held for this summer, the Mustang continues to roll on in the fight against cancer. Tickets for $1 each will be available to purchase.

Saturday, August 24th, the Patchwork Family team will be at Wal-Mart in Lewisburg to show off the Mustang and sell tickets. During Milton’s Harvest Festival, Klee’s Crows team will have the Mustang on display on Bound Avenue along with tickets.

Tips and Pointers You Need to Know to Effectively Defend Yourself From Danger

I

magine that you’re coming home from a late night outing with friends and suddenly, out of nowhere, you’re attacked. At this point, it doesn’t matter if you’re being robbed, beaten, or worse. Just that you’re being assaulted.

Afterward,s questions start to cloud your mind like, what could you have done to prevent it? Or, was it your fault that you were attacked?

How could you have protected yourself?

Statistically, a crime of violence is committed every few minutes - with an assault happening every 17 SECONDS! With those kinds of odds, learning how to protect yourself should be a natural part of life - it’s a responsibility, not a choice.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect yourself effectively, without years of martial arts training.

One of these, and perhaps most importantly, is learning to be aware of your surroundings.

This isn’t about paranoia, or just about the fear of being attacked.

Paying attention to the world around you also opens you to opportunities for success, gives you a greater sense of connection, and allows you to engage in great experiences that you might otherwise have missed.

When it comes to self-defense and protecting yourself, most people often fail to notice their surround-

ings or they think they should only be aware at night. This is a myth.

The more you notice your surroundings, the better your chances.

You should learn to pay close attention to detail. Think Matt Damon in the first Jason Bourne movie where he’s in the diner and pointing out that he “sees” and knows certain things without knowing how or why he knows them. The “things” he’s identifying are things that the undercover agent and the self-defense expert

sees and processes without even thinking about them.

Also, never forget that the very nature of violence is that... it’s “random”. You can be attacked any time of the day. Remember, your attacker sees an opportunity and they take it..

Be prepared and... Pay Attention!

In a perfect world we would all be able to talk our way out of a conflict. But, we all know this is not a perfect world. And let’s face it, not everyone communicates well.

There will always be conflict and we need to know how to defend ourselves. Protecting yourself doesn’t mean you will attack anyone or go around looking for fights, but rather it means you’re capable of defending and protecting yourself if and when the need should arise.

There are many different forms of martial arts, and many different systems of selfdefense. Each form addressing its own unique style or perspective on handling conflict. You

should find one that will fit your lifestyle and teaches you how to protect you.

But, self-defense and marital arts training also involves more than just hand to hand combat. They teach you to defend yourself mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well.

you want. You can designate separate persons for financial and healthcare decisions, more than one person, or a surrogate POA to act as secondary, if the primary POA is unavailable.

A POA doesn’t have to be a family member. When selecting someone to be your POA , select someone you trust and who will follow your wishes, even if they do not agree with them. Because of the responsibility involved, you should speak with the individual you select to be sure they are comfortable with the position.

A Power of Attorney does not go into effect until it is noted by two physicians that your are no longer capable of making decisions for yourself. Many times an individual is till capable of making decisions for themselves and the POA believes that they have the power of attorney that they are able to make all and every decision. You can change your designated POA and their powers at any time and as much as you like.

In instances where you have not made advanced plans, your next of kin would be responsible for making decisions on your behalf. At times it remains difficult for family members to help you especially with financial responsibilities without the Power of Attorney documentation. The court may also step in to petition to have a guardian appointed to act as a POA if there is no documentation nor next of kin.

As we all continue to age, advanced healthcare/ financial directives will help you feel more comfortable with decisions made on your behalf. There is no risk at being prepared now and, acting no could prevent many problems later.
