In 90% of all cases, hearing loss occurs because the delicate hair cells in the inner ear are irreparably broken or do not otherwise function properly. This means that the brain does not receive all the sounds and frequencies it needs to provide a complete soundtrack. It is like removing all the high keys on a piano and asking someone to play a well-known melody. Even with only six or seven keys missing, the melody might be difficult to recognize and simply wouldn’t sound right. Sounds provide useful information and enhance our experiences that give meaning to our lives. Maybe you have already forgotten the sound of a purring cat or the crisp sound of snow under your boots one cold winter morning. Because hearing loss typically develops gradually, you may not notice the loss of subtle everyday sound such a ticking clock or a rustling newspaper. Before you know it, you are missing sounds that are critical to communication. Long gone are the days when hearing instruments were large, obvious and embarrassing. Just like computers and cell phones from a decade ago, hearing instruments are now much smaller and offer amazing technological performance. In fact, the technology and cosmetics of modern hearing instruments make

wearing them far more discreet than having to ask another person to repeat their question, unintentionally ignoring them or pretending you have heard them only to give the wrong answer. As hearing loss develops gradually, it is not always easy to recognize the extent of the problem. If you have trouble hearing your soundtrack, you might not be experiencing life to the fullest. A simple hearing test can determine if you have a hearing loss. You get an eye test every now and then, so why not have your hearing checked as well? Living with untreated hearing loss means difficulties in conversations with others, social gatherings, and perhaps lost performance at work. You many also suffer side effects from hearing loss such as: saddness and depression; worry and anxiety; less social activity; and emotional turmoil and insecurity. By not seeking help for your hearing loss, you are missing out on enjoying all that life has to offer. Most people typically disgregard their hearing loss for five to seven years. This is a bad decision. Putting off the inevitable will just make it harder to rectify the problem. Your brain gets used to not hearing everyday sounds and the longer you live without sounds, the longer it may take for the brain to understand them again. Regular hearing instrument use can help maintain your brain’s ability to interpret sounds. The fist step is to see a hearing healthcare professional for a hearing test. Depending on your test result and the nature of your hearing loss, you will either be referred to an ENT doctor for further examination or you’ll be advised on which kind of hearing instruments best suit your needs.
