Coping With Flu Season While the fall season approaches, many people are thinking ahead to flu season. I know I am a little early, however it is never early enough when it come to protecting yourself, your children and those you love. Last years strain was severe and many healthcare facilities took extraordinary precautions such as restricting visitors and gowning and gloving staff. If you’re not eating, you are more at risk for major fluid loss. Medications that lower blood pressure or Lasix can also contribute to dehydration and the older adult may end up in the hospital. Drinking fluids is hard if you have a sore throat: a Popsicle will provide needed fluid and is easier going down. If you have a high fever and are unable to keep anything down for 24 hours, call your doctor or go the emergency room immediately. Maintain a healthy diet to prevent sickness. Eat three meals a day which should include plenty of fruits and vegetables and foods high in vitamin c such as oranges and tomatoes. When ill, drink plenty of fluids especially nutrient drinks such as juice, Gatorade and propel. Avoid high sugary soda because of empty calories. Avoid drinks such as coffee, which will contribute to dehydration. An over the counter supplement like Ensure can provide extra protein and calories. Proper food handling is important in avoiding any illness. Refrig-

erate items, cook to proper temperatures and discard leftovers after 3-5 days. Talk wit your doctor about getting a flu shot. The vaccine no longer contains live viruses and while you may experience a few side effects, you can’t get the flu from the shot. With all the choices out there and everyone under the sun claiming to be the next great hope, it’s hard to decide who is worth training with and weeding out the who are just trying to make a buck teaching ineffective techniques to people who don’t know any better. If you are a newbie (we all were once), it makes it even harder to know what is real and what is not. This article provides a few tips to help you find exactly what is right for you. First a n d foremost, you need to decide what it is that you are seeking to gain from the self-defense arts. Are you looking for a hobby to do once or twice a week that will enable you to go to tournaments and compete, or are you looking to learn practical self-defense that you can be used for selfprotection in a real-life situation. The point is, there is a HUGE difference between these two approaches.

Tip # 1

WhatTip # 2 e v e r school you choose, ensure

that you click with your instructor. If your selfdefense teacher doesn’t like you, or you do not like them, then it’s not going to work. You should also take into account that what they’re teaching and ask yourself, “Is this inline with your beliefs, ethics and morals?”

There are a lot of people out there who have attained their rank in the self defense arts through, what are often referred to as, “black belt mills” schools that just promote students for “time” rather than effectiveness - and pass on bogus information. Remember -- Just because someone is wearing a black belt, or calls themselves a grand master, doesn’t mean they are worthy of the status they proclaim. B e careful of instructors who proclaim that “their” selfdefense art’s style is the only real style that will hold up in a street attack. The truth of the matter is that every style of the selfdefense arts has its inherent strengths and weaknesses. In addition, there is so much more to martial arts than just the fighting aspect. If that is the only aspect of your self-defense or martial arts classes, then you’re not really learning true self-defense as they have been passed down by truly enlightened master warriors.
