Don’t let the road construction on Route 45 keep you away from Oktoberfest as we have a full schedule for Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5. On Friday, the event before the event kicks off with a Volksmarch starting at 11 am. Meet at the VFW Carnival grounds at 10:45 am and a bus will take you to the start of the Volksmarch. You will be back to the carnival grounds in time for the tapping of the first keg by Mayor David Cooney at 1 pm that marks the official start of Oktoberfest. From 2 to 4:30 pm, the One Man German Band will be playing under the big tent followed by the Pleasant Valley Dancers from 5 to 6:30 pm. The BIG show will be at 7 pm featuring John Stevens’ Doubleshot polka band. This group has played at events from Wisconsin to New Jersey and have been featured on WVIA Pennsylvania Polk and Bethlehem Musikfest, have had a “best new song” acknowledgement from 247polkaheaven.com plus songs in the top ten from 247polkaheaven to WPNA radio in Illinois. Their goal, besides playing music, is to introduce polka music to younger generations. Saturday’s Oktoberfest will open at 11 am with the Black Run Bohemian Dancers taking to the floor from noon to 1 pm. From 1 to 2 pm, the One Man German Band will play followed by the Black Run Bohemian Dancers from 2 to 3 pm. The One Man German Band will be back from 3 to 4 pm followed by the Pleasant Valley Dancers from 4 to 5:30 pm. The band to dance the night away with on Saturday will be Musik Werke who will play from 6 pm until the close of the festival at 10 pm. determining a
Collectible’s Value
D
etermining the value of collectibles is a very tricky matter to say the least. There are two major factors that need to be considered. First, the condition needs to be assessed. Take coins for example. A rare coin that has minimal wear or bagmarks will bring much more than the same date coin that has heavy wear. This is true for collectibles of all kinds. Condition is very important to a potential buyer. Secondly, rarity plays a big part in determining the value of items. How many were made and how old are the two most important factors in determining rarity. Where do you start? In the past, reference books provided the best way to determine value of collectibles and still can be used if internet access is not available. Now we have the internet and it is by far the best place to locate the value of items. Ebay is the new reference guide used by collectors worldwide. With millions of buyers and sellers, the chances are high that someone recently sold the same thing you are trying to determine the value of. There is a right and wrong way to find value of items on Ebay. Many sellers ask far too much money for their items and as a result, their items never sell. If you want to locate the true value of the item in question, you will need to filter these items from your search. Let’s face it, an item is only worth what someone is actually willing to pay for it. So to find true value you need to browse through “sold” listings. You can do this by entering a brief item description through the navigation bar, and then going to the left menu and marking the “sold” listing icon. Once you do that, you will see items with green numbers at the right of the item.
These are actual prices the items sold for. It is no use browsing through items that were unsold. Also keep in mind that you need to find items of similar condition that sold to determine the true value of the item you are researching. Another good resource is online discussion groups. There are many sites for collectors to discuss what they have. Many users are more than willing to help you with determining the value of an item. To locate a discussion group, go to Google and type in discussion groups for collectibles and go to the group that best fits the item you are researching. Most importantly, you must remember that not everything is worth money, and it can be frustrating trying to find a reasonable expectation of an asking price for many items. Sentimental value and interesting stories don’t make an object desirable to collectors, but can be great fillers for your items description.
Just have fun, and maybe you will gain knowledge of what items are worth, and you can pursue collecting and dealing of things you find interesting, and make some serious money in the process. Should You Consider Martial Arts for Increasing Your Child’s Safety?

common worry of many parents is that martial arts training will encourage violence or aggression in their child. But, with rare exceptions, the opposite proves to be true. At a professional martial arts academy, one teaching safety and self-defense for children, kids learn about what causes conflict so they can be better prepared to deal with it in a violent or threatening situation. Children discover an inner confidence and strength that helps them to move beyond the need to prove themselves physically or cower in fear. They come to find that they have the courage to walk away from a dangerous situation. When it comes to teaching child safety, make sure that you ask about the instructor’s credentials. Make sure that he or she is qualified, in your eyes, to help you teach safety lessons to your child. Regardless of whether or not you choose the martial arts as a way to help keep your child safe in today’s often unsafe world, here are a few safety tips to aid in your own understanding of child safety and therefor your ability to help your child with their own personal safety. 1. Educate yourself about the tactics used by abductors and those who assault children. Your child’s safety should be one of your top priorities. Know what the dangers are. 2. Teach your child the rules but know they may not understand (even if they say they do). Espe-

cially young children. You are your child’s first line of defense. 3. Avoid using scare or fear tactics. Scaring a child by talking about the aweful things that can happen is definitely the wrong approach. Be responsible. 4. Establish rules that are enforced the same way every time. Consistency is the key. Go over the rules on a regular basis. 5. Be firm and don’t give in to ‘whining’ and pressure tactics from a child who doesn’t understand what the real world is like. Remember... YOU are the parent. 6. Understand the benefits of the martial arts, and that a good program teaches much more than punching, kicking, and blocking. In fact, the core traits of discipline, confidence, and positive selfesteem can often do more to deter bullies than anything else! Give your child the tools that are proven to work. ne can’t help feeling wistful with the realization that the summer months have passed us. Most of us see those dreadful winter months just around the corner and often miss the beauty and wonder of Fall. We work hard to make our July cookouts as spectacular as the fireworks in the summer sky and begin to start our Christmas preparations in November. October is a month that has so much wonder and brilliance. Mother Nature is especially hard at work during this month. The fall foliage is the most spectacular in our area during this month. The green hearty leaves on the trees begin to change. Brilliant reds intermingle with lemony yellows. Sprinkled in the midst is a hint of orange that often reminds me of gumdrops. We often will take short road trips and rides in our cars to see the hand painting of Mother Nature’s trees. We can often see the mountains through a prism of autumn colors. Many children will begin to start a leaf collection in hopes of capturing

the brilliance of the fall leaves. As the fall leaves lose their splendor and begin to gently fall of the trees we find that our grass is full of the crisp, multi-colored leaves. We then begin to rake them up and place them in piles that our children will frolic in. Another color to remember this month is PINK. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Take a few minutes to schedule a mammogram, learn why your risk factors are and encourage your friends and families to do the same. Mountain View, a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will celebrate their Annual PINK OUT Day on October 16. Hallways, offices and guest rooms will be adorned with the color pink. Many of our staff and guests will wear the official PINK OUT Day T-Shirt. A dress down day for staff will also be sponsored and also proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen breast cancer fund. DECONSTRUCTING CRAVINGS
T
he body is an amazing source of intelligence. It is always there for you, pumping blood, never skipping a heartbeat, digesting whatever food you put in it and maintaining homeostasis. Is this reliable, intelligent biocomputer making a mistake by craving ice cream or a hamburger or chocolate? Are cravings due to lack of will power or discipline? I’d like to suggest that cravings are not a problem. They are critical pieces of information that tell you what your body needs. The important thing is to understand why you carve what you crave. Perhaps your diet is too restrictive or devoid of essential nutrients. Perhaps you are living a lifestyle that is too boring or stressful. Your body tries to correct the imbalance by sending you a message: a craving. A
craving for something sweet could mean you need more protein, more exercise, more water or more love in your life. The key to stopping the sugar craving is to understand and deliver what your body really needs. No book or theory can tell you what to eat. Only awareness of your body and its needs can tell you. Of all the relaionships in our lives, the one with our body is most essential. It takes communication, love and time to cultivate a relationship with your body. As you learn to decipher and respond to your body’s cravings, you will create a deep and lasting level of health and balance. The next time you have a craving, treat it as a loving message from your body instead of a weakness. Try these tips to respond to your body: • Have a glass
of water and wait 10 minutes. • Eat a healthier version of what you crave. For example, if you crave sweets, try eating more fruit and sweet or root vegetables. • What is out of balance in your life? Is there something you need to express, or is something being repressed? What happened in your life just before you had this craving? • When you eat the food you are craving, enjoy it, taste it, savor it; notice its effect. Then you will become more aware and free to decide if you really want it next time. • Eat more nutrients! Many of my clients have found relief from their cravings simply by increasing their intake of nutrient dense foods, such as dark leafy green vegetables! • Take a look at
all the areas of your life such as your career, your financial situation, your home environment, your relationships, your spiritual connectionperhaps you are craving more from your life in other areas and using food to satisfy you instead. Add more sweetness to your life in non-food ways! If you want to discover new oceans you must first lose sight of the shore...

Did you know that October is cheese month? Well it is. The American cheese society created the first ever American cheese month in October 2011 to recognize and raise awareness of the quality and diversity of American cheese to support and promote well-made cheese, local foods, family farms, traditional cheese making methods, and sustainable production models, and to help generate funding for the American cheese Education Foundation, which educates people about the art and science of speciality cheese.
Instead of serving candy at Halloween why not give some healthy foods like CHEESE! Here are some recipes:
Broccoli Casserole:
10 ounces broccoli, chopped 1 pound butter 1 roll of Ritz crackers Several slices of Velveeta cheese Cook broccoli. Melt Butter. Crush crackers and mix in the melted butter. Put half of the cracker butter mix on bottom of dish. Then put a layer of ½ of the crooked broccoli, followed by a layer of cheese, then the other ½ of broccoli, followed by a layer of cheese, and finally topping with the other ½ of the cracker mix.Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Put it in a 2 quart casserole dish.

Cheesy Cauliflower Soup:
1 medium cauliflower head, broken into florets 1 medium carrot, shredded ¼ cup celery,chopped 2 ½ cups water 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules 3 teaspoons butter 2tablespoons all purpose flour ¾ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 cups milk 1 cup cheddar cheese, Shredded In a large saucepan, combine the cauliflower, carrot, celery, water, and bouillon. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until vegetables are tender( do not drain). In another large saucepan, melt butter. Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat. Stir in cheese until melted. Stir into the cauliflower mixture. Yields 8 servings ( about 2 quarts). Enjoy and Happy Halloween!
