Misericordia University speech-language pathology graduate students present research at international conference in Rome, Italy DALLAS, Pa. — Misericordia University faculty advisors and graduate students in the speech-language pathology program recently made four research presentations at the recent Estill World Voice Symposium V in Rome, Italy. Estill Voice International produces an international symposium every two years that features presentations and workshops from some of the most gifted teachers and invited guests from the scientific, medical and voice training communities. Misericordia University student Nicholas Barone of Dallas Borough, Pa., and professors Cari Tellis, Ph.D., assistant professor; and Glen Tellis, Ph.D., chair and professor, presented “Acoustic and Aerodynamic Properties of True Vocal-Fold Body Cover Conditions,’’ which was also the subject of Barone’s Master’s thesis work. Dr. Cari Tellis and Barone also collaborated on “Estill Figures and Qualities Inside Voice Therapy: A New Therapy Approach.’’ Misericordia University students Katie Lawlor of Hillsdale, N.J.; Amanda Brown of New Columbia, Pa., and Barone collaborated with Dr. Cari Tellis on the research presentation, “Differences in Voice Measures in Cheerleaders Before and After Training for Belt Vocal Quality.’’ Drs. The fun begins at 7:30 am with a free “Early Bird Breakfast” provided by Weis Markets in the “Boomers Café and Lounge”. Lunch including our Famous Pig Roast Sandwiches will be served from 10AM to 1PM. Miss Pennsylvania 2011 Juliann Sheldon is the guest hostess and will be on hand to meet and greet all visitors. Prior to her crowning she was the reigning Miss Jewel of the West when she won the state crown. The Point Park University student represented Pennsylvania at the Miss America 2012 pageant in January in Las Vegas. The Expo will feature free seminars. Geisinger orthopedic surgeon, Steven Lillmars, DO, will present a seminar on Current Treatment for Hip and Knee Arthritis at 9 AM. At Geisinger, Dr. Lillmars specializes in total hip and knee replacement surgery and foot and ankle surgery. At 10 AM, Humana will present Insurance Options. The seminars are free and visitors may register right at the Expo. Entertainment will be provided by singersongwriter KJ performing folk music and songs that all visitors love and remember. KJ has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Powerhouse Sound will play the”Oldies”. A benefit raffle will be held for Children’s Miracle Network, Janet Weis Children’s Hospital with prizes donated by Exhibitors and local merchants. The drawings for raffle prizes will be conducted by Miss Pennsylvania and awarded at the Expo. Exhibitors will also offer booth drawings for useful gifts and prizes and have lots of free goodies to take home. Guests that register by noon will be entered into a drawing for $ 100 cash prize drawn by Miss Pennsylvania at 1pm. If you are interested in joining, contact Steven Klapp 570-490-3879. ufn Visitors Bureau Releases New Native American History Brochure Partnership with Bucknell University and Northumberland County Historical Society The Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau (SRVVB), which is the Tourism Promotion Agency for Snyder, Northumberland, and Union Counties, has partnered with Katherine Faull, Professor of German and Humanities at Bucknell University and Cindy Inkrote, Director of the Northumberland County Historical Society, to produce a driving tour brochure that highlights the rich Native American and Moravian history in the Susquehanna River Valley. The “Native Paths” brochure is the first of its kind in Central PA and was a truly collaborative project between the Visitors Bureau, Bucknell University, and the Northumberland County Historical Society. The brochure takes the reader back to the colonial period, some 270 years ago, when Native Americans, colonists and Europeans came together to trade, negotiate, and live. The brochure follows common paths used for exchange, communication, hunting, and war for Native peoples for centuries before the arrival of the European settlers. The “Native Paths” brochure can be requested for free at www.VisitCentralPA.org or by calling 1-800-525-7320 or 570-524-7234. The brochure is broken up into eight stops, beginning at the Shikellamy Overlook, moving to Sunbury and the Shikellamy State Park Marina, up the Warrior Path to Montoursville, and then circles back through Central Oak Heights in West Milton, to Blue Hill at the confluence, and finally to Selinsgrove’s Isle of Que. The brochure was designed
by MoJo Active, located in Watsontown. The Moravian Archives in both Bethlehem, PA and Hernnhut, Germany participated in the project by allowing a manuscript map by Joseph Shippen and a stylized image of Chief Shikellamy to be used in the brochure. Katherine Faull, a local expert on Moravian and Native American cultures, is currently translating various Moravian Missionary diaries from the Colonial Period. She says of the project, “Working with archival materials opened up a new way of looking at the Susquehanna River Valley for me. This tour is my way of sharing those perspectives with both residents and visitors alike.” Cindy Inkrote, Director of the Northumberland County Historical Society says of the initiative, “The Native Paths driving tour offers a wonderful opportunity to follow the pathways of the Susquehanna River Valley’s early inhabitants and to become more aware of the interaction of those cultures. As history has repeatedly shown us, this does not work. Every society that has tried this has collapsed. A prime example is the Soviet Union. If socialism were
a better system, we would all be speaking Russian. Previously democratic civilizations and nations that have tried this have collapsed into dictatorship. Germany, the latter printing so much money that its currency became virtually worthless, bankrupting the country, and resulting in the establishment of Hitler’s Nazi(National Socialist) party dictatorship that brought on the horrors of World War II. SUN Tech Students Promote Dental Health Month Middleburg Head Start morning and afternoon groups participated in a preschool dental presentation at SUN Area Technical Institute in New Berlin, PA. The students participated in exploring the dental classroom while learning about healthy dental and nutritional habits. The students in the Dental Health Technology program provided instruction in tooth brushing and demonstrated some skills that the children would see in the dental office. The program was prepared to promote for Dental Health month.

A question-and-answer session follows immediately after his presentation. Bernstein will also participate in a book signing and autograph session following the conclusion of the event. Earlier in the day, Misericordia University students will have an opportunity to participate in an intimate question-and-answer session with Bernstein on the topic of the current culture in Washington, D.C. Few journalists and authors in American history have had the impact on their era and their craft as Bernstein. He has written, among other works, the definitive accounts of the lives of three of the dominant figures of the past half century: President Richard Nixon, Pope John Paul II and Hillary Rodham Clinton. In the early 1970s, Bernstein and Bob Woodward broke the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post and set the standard for modern investigative reporting, for which they and newspaper were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Since then, Bernstein has continued to build on the theme he and Woodward first explored in the Nixon years — the use and abuse of power, in books, magazine articles, commentary, television reporting and as editor of an award-winning website. Together, they also wrote two classic best sellers: “All the President’s Men,’’ which was turned into a movie starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, about the coverage of the Watergate story; and “The Final Days,’’ that outlined the denouement of the Nixon presidency.
In the 1990s, Bernstein turned his attention to one of the towering figures of the age, Pope John Paul II, resulting in the ground-breaking papal biography, “John Paul II and the History of Our Time.’’ The book, co-authored with Vatican journalist Marco Politi and published in 1996 by Doubleday, was the first to detail the Pope’s pivotal, and often secret, role in the fall of communism. Much of the information was unearthed from the Kremlin’s secret archives of the Cold War era, and from Vatican sources that also shed historic light on the Pope’s ecclesiastical policies and personal attitudes towards sex, priestly celibacy, women, dogma and tensions between the American church and the Vatican. Bernstein’s most recent book is the national bestseller, “A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton,’’ published in 2007. It was acclaimed as “a model of political biography’’ by the Los Angeles Times, “balanced and convincing’’ by the New York Times and chosen by Amazon.com readers as one of the 10 best books of the year. Bernstein is also author of the masterful memoir, “Loyalties: A Son’s Memories,’’ which documented his family’s experience during the McCarthy era. He is also a political analyst for CNN and a contributing editor for Vanity Fair magazine, and is a former Washington Bureau chief and a correspondent for ABC News. In addition to his political coverage and commentary, he has written and lectured extensively about the American press, its role and its responsibilities. Among his magazine pieces, he wrote two articles in Vanity Fair in 2005 and 2006 comparing the presidencies of the Bush and Nixon eras in which he concluded that the policies of Bush were more draconian and egregious than Nixon’s. In 2000, he published, “The Ballad of John McCain,’’ a now-referential account of the senator’s life and
politics in Vanity Fair months before the senator announced his candidacy for president in 2000. In 2011, his groundbreaking Newsweek/Daily Beast commentaries gained international attention on the subject of Rupert Murdoch’s pernicious influence on the politics, journalism and popular culture of three continents. Bernstein was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He began his journalist career at 16 as a copyboy for The Washington Evening Star, and became a reporter at 19. The Washington Post, he covered virtually every aspect of the urban experience: police, courts, city hall, race and civil rights, politics and the antiwar movement. He was also a part-time rock critic at the paper. He lives in New York with his wife, Christine Kuehbeck. The couple has two sons, Jacob and Max. The south-central Pennsylvania-based Launies have been playing traditional Irish music since the mid1990s and have performed extensively throughout the US and in Europe, building up a devoted following for their driving Sligo-style fiddle music and wide repertoire of songs. THE LAUNIES The Launies formed in the mid-90s when Jamie, a singer and guitarist from a London-Irish family, then living in Central PA, brought together some like-minded musicians wanting to perform traditional Irish music. In spite of Jamie moving to Tucson, Arizona, in 2006, the group is still going strong, performing across the Mid-Atlantic States each year. He is joined by State College-based fiddler, singer and guitarist, Bruce Young, Harrisburg native and Henry Koretzky (vocals, mandolin, guitar). The trio often expands into a four- or five-piece band as they are joined by Debbi Kauffmann (vocals, guitar, bodhrán) and Chad Shambaugh (vocals, bodhrán), musicians long associated with the Launies.
F r o m t h e i r earliest days, t h e Launies has b e e n n o t ed for driving instrument a l s , led by Bruce’s Sligo style fiddling and their variety of celtic songs, ranging from those Jamie learned from his family while growing up in London, through Henry’s thoughtful ballads from Irish and Appalachian traditions, to Bruce’s rousing celtic songs (often with singalong choruses, such as “Whiskey in the Jar”) - the material varies according to the audience and the venue. The band has appeared at numerous festivals throughout Pennsylvania and farther away: the McLain Celtic Festival (Carlisle), the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts (State College), YorkFest (York) and the Celtic Oyster Festival (Reading). Concert appearances include Concerts on the Corner (Mechanicsburg), the Chambersburg Memorial Park series and Cherry Lane Concerts (York). Other venues that have featured the Launies include Kings College (Wilkes-Barre), the Mermaid (Philadelphia) and the Harrisburg Hilton, as well as many private functions.

The project that began as Stefan Christensen playing and recording everything solo in 2007 has become a fully jelled, rock-solid, full-band quartet. Full of the off-kilter weirdness that Estrogen Highs fans have come to love, Irrelevant Future also features one of the most straight ahead pop songs of their career, “I Wanna Be Tall,” premiered today on Impose. Theoretically, this song is what all my dreams are made of, and if the rest of their upcoming LP on Trouble in Mind sounds like this when it comes out in April, we may be talking Instant Classic status. Estrogen Highs’ “I Wanna Be Tall.” The anxiously awaited follow up to the Estrogen Highs excellent self-released 2011 album Friends and Relative is finally here and let us be the first to say that if you aren’t already a fan of these guys, you are about to
become one. After two LP’s, one 12” EP, four 7”s and one cassette, the project that started as Stefan Christensen in 2007 playing and recording everything by himself has now fully jelled into a rocksolid, full-band quartet. “Irrelevant Future” synthesizes all of the bands best attributes into one hit packed, perfectly paced LP. It expounds on the wiry (and Wire-y) DIY whiffs from previous releases, emphasizes the thinking man’s punk of the Minutemen and all the while an undercurrent of Kiwi-jangle ebbs and flows. With all of this in mind, Estrogen Highs thankfully don’t sacrifice the off-kilter weirdness that already established fans know and love. Songs like “Alchemy Contest” and “Status Quo (Oh No)” have a quirky melodic sensibility that plays off intricate guitar and bass lines. “Grass of Leaves” holds down the chugga-chugga punk angle while “They Told Me I Was Everything” meditates on Shakespearean betrayal - and just when you think you’ve got a handle on the record’s direction they ham-
