The “Native Paths” brochure is the first of its kind in Central PA and was a truly collaborative project between the Visitors Bureau, Bucknell University, and the Northumberland County Historical Society. The brochure takes the reader back to the colonial period, some 270 years ago, when Native Americans, colonists and Europeans came together to

trade, negotiate, and live. The brochure follows common paths used for exchange, communication, hunting, and war for Native peoples for centuries before the arrival of the European settlers. The “Native Paths” brochure can be requested for free at www.VisitCentralPA.org or by calling 1-800-525-7320 or 570-524-7234. The brochure is broken up into eight stops, beginning at the Shikellamy Overlook, moving to Sunbury and the Shikellamy State Park Marina, up the Warrior Path to Montoursville, and then circles back through Central Oak Heights in West Milton, to Blue Hill at the confluence, and finally to Selinsgrove’s Isle of Que. The brochure was designed by MoJo Active, located in Watsontown. The Moravian Archives in both Bethlehem, PA and Hernnhut, Germany participated in the project by allowing a manuscript map by Joseph Shippen and a stylized image of Chief Shikellamy to be used in the brochure. Katherine Faull, a local expert on Moravian and Native American cultures, is currently translating various Moravian Missionary diaries from the Colonial Period. She says of the project, “Working with archival materials opened up a new way of looking at the Susquehanna River Valley for me. This tour is my way of sharing those perspectives with both residents and visitors alike.” Cindy Inkrote, Director of the Northumberland County Historical Society says of the initiative, “The Native

Paths driving tour offers a wonderful opportunity to follow the pathways of the Susquehanna River Valley’s early inhabitants and to become more aware of the interaction of those cultures. Dr. Faull’s translation of the Moravian diaries brings a new level of understanding to what took place during the 18th century at the Susquehanna’s confluence.” For more information about the SRVVB and the region, go to VisitCentralPA.org FARM & GARDEN & OUTDOOR ITEMS - 23 300 Gallon Gas Tank. The Purple Heart Project: A Fundraising Concert for Wounded Warriors

You’re invited to the super fun party with Many Bands Hello and happy Friday! It’s hard to believe that SXSW is right around the corner, especially in the middle of this cold and snowy winter. Are you planning on heading to Austin this year? Wanted to shoot over a quick run-down of artists we have headed down to the festival this year and here’s a SoundCloud playlist with streaming and downloadable tracks from each artist. I know lots has already been confirmed for SXSW, but if you’d like more music or info from any of these acts, please do let me know!

On Saturday, February 11 2012, students from the Uptown Music Collective will team up together with students from area schools, and the staff of the Community Arts Center, to present the Purple Heart Project, a fundraising concert for Wounded Warriors. All proceeds from this concert will go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project to help them and their families empower themselves and put their lives back together. As our country finishes withdrawing its troops from Iraq and begins the same process in Afghanistan, we are left with the aftermath of over 10 years of war. In those 10 years over 30,000 of our nations servicemen and woman have been wounded in the line of duty. The Wounded Warrior Project, founded by several veterans and friends who were moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home, began by providing comfort items to these wounded service members from Afghanistan and Iraq. The organization, which started small, has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they recover and transition back into civilian life. Tens of thousands of Wounded Warriors and caregivers receive support each year through WWP programs designed to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement. “I think it’s important that we learn from the mistakes of Vietnam, where returning soldiers were blamed as much as our government was, for that unpopular war,” said Dave Brumbaugh, Executive Director of the Uptown Music Collective. “No matter what your feelings may be about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, we as a nation should honor, support and take care of our nation’s veterans who were willing to put their lives on the line when our country called” The Purple Heart Project will feature over 40 students performing rock songs with a patriotic or related mes-

sage, from artists such as Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, James Brown, Richie Havens, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and more. There will also be a raffle and other fundraising events during the course of the evening with all proceeds going directly to The Wounded Warrior Project. Established in April of 2000, the Uptown Music Collective (a 501c 3 non profit school of music) has developed a reputation as the premier source of music education in the area, with an enrollment of over 125 students. Offering private lessons at all levels on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, as well as classes and workshops in music theory, songwriting, and styles such as the Blues, Jazz, Classical and Rock. The primary age range of the Collective is 10 – 18 yrs old, but is open to all ages and levels. Along with private lessons, the UMC offers a myriad of programs including its flagship Performance Program. This program educates students about the ins and outs of major and minor performances, including direction, production, preparation and technical aspects of the performances. The student leaders for this performance are UMC student, Nuria Hunter, a senior at Williamsport Area High School and Collin Lakatos, a junior at Williamsport Area High School.

Youth for Haiti in which all proceeds raised went to Direct Relief International to help the people of Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Also, the students raised money for the local nonprofit, the Children’s Development Center, with their performance entitled, Reaching beyond Limits. Each performance rose over $5,000.00 for the intended charity. “Teaching our students the power of music to create change and the importance of giving back to the community are both cornerstones of what the Uptown Music Collective endeavors to do,” stated Brumbaugh. Tickets for the performance are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door with the proceeds benefiting the Uptown Music Collective (a 501 c3 Non-Profit School of Music). Tickets are available at The Uptown Music Collective (848 West Fourth St., Williamsport) and The Community Arts Center Box Office (220 West Fourth St., Williamsport) as well as Alabaster Coffee (410 Pine Street, Williamsport) and K & S Music (1116 West Southern Ave, South Williamsport). Media sponsor for this event is Backyard Broadcasting. For more information about, The Purple Heart Project: A Fundraising Concert for Wounded Warriors, or the Uptown Music Collective, check out www. uptownmusic.org/mediaroom or call 570-329-0888.

Over the past two years the Collective has used their performance program to help raise money for charitable causes and organizations. Previous charity fundraising concerts have included,

White Mystery This brother-sister ginger garage rock hurricane is the definition of a party band. Last years’ Blood & Venom made a slew of Best Of 2011 lists and their superfun warmer times video for “Birthday” proves MTV’s praise that “everything the White Stripes once pretended to be, White Mystery actually is.” Mikal Cronin It’s fair to say that Mikal’s self-titled debut LP out last year via Trouble in Mind was one of the sleeper hits of the year with praise coming in from Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, NME, Impose, NPR, L Magazine and loads more. The record really is a revelation, full of Beach Boy psychedelics and ridiculously catchy tracks, recorded with Ty Segall producing and featuring guests like Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer. Check

out “the hilly psychedelics and unshakable hooks” of “Get Along” for a taste. The Parson Red Heads After touring with Viva Voce, Alela Diane and Fruit Bats supporting last year’s Yearling, the Parsons are taking their lovely harmonies and inventive West Coast psych-folk on the road this spring with Blitzen Trapper, including a trip to Austin during the fest. They just did an intimate Daytrotter session and here are their Americana-celebrating, onthe-road videos for “Burning Up the Sky” and “Seven Years Ago.” Apteka Apteka’s 2011 release Gargoyle Days was undoubtedly one of my faves of the year stream/download lead single “Striking Violet.” Time Out went so far to say that “while it’s nice to see Billy Corgan again get his act together, write some proper tunes and not berate his fans, the fact is this local act is out-smashing Smashing Pumpkins. Apteka’s storming new Gargoyle Days makes the new Jane’s Addiction sound hugely unnecessary, too.”

The Beautiful View The Beautiful View’s debut LP life is beautiful is pop music in the truest sense of the word. Check out the super stylish video for “The Horseman,” and stream the entire LP here. The Right Now The Right Now are an eightpiece outfit from Chicago that owe as much to soul and old-school R&B as they do to torch singers, big band recordings - classic yet still incredibly fresh. Give a listen to “If I Wanted To” for a glimpse into their old timey power. . Netherfriends Shawn Rosenblatt and his sometimes band/constant music project Netherfriends hit the road in April of 2010 and by April 2011 had played a show in every State in the US, met like-minded musicians along the way and recorded an original song dedicated, in some way, to a city in that State. Kilo Records is releasing the first batch of tunes from that project, Middle America, and here is the first song from the release, “Bloomington, IN.”

Teen Girl Scientist Monthly Call me jaded, but sometimes it’s hard to believe a bunch of recent college grads from NYC are making music this...optimistic. Check out the crazy fun Teen Girl Scientist Monthly’s “Safari” video and grab the MP3 for that track.

fail to learn from history. George Santayana noted that those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. In both Europe and the United States, powerhungry politicians have been trying to buy votes with money we don’t have, taxing not only this generation but every generation in the future, guaranteeing a lower standard of living for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These shortsighted politicos, thinking only of the present, seem to think they can go on forever, steadily increasing the public debt, by just printing more and more money without an equal increase in goods and services, hoping to find someone to buy our consequently less and less valuable bonds. As history has repeatedly shown us, this does not work. Every society that has tried this has collapsed. A prime example is the Soviet Union. If socialism were a better system, we would all be speaking Russian. Previously democratic civilizations and nations that have tried this have collapsed into dictatorship. Germany, the latter printing so much money that its currency became virtually worthless, bankrupting the country, and

resulting in the establishment of Hitler’s Nazi(National Socialist) party dictatorship that brought on the horrors of World War II. It is time to rid ourselves of such history-ignoring, outof-touch-with-reality, powermad politicians, ousting them from power, and never let them in office again. -Harold Bob Jones REAL ESTATE - 40 House for Sale By Owner: Muncy Hills, almost 4 acres, 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, 1st floor laundry room, big kitchen, big living room, over 2000 sq. ft. living space. 200AMP service, central air, gas heat, 3 car detached garage, call for price & appointment. 570-546-7722. 3/18. 3 Bedroom Ranch Home, Kreamer. 3 Bedrooms 1 1/2 bath, Large eat in kitchen, Large living room with bay window, sun room addition with deck on 1/3 of an acre.
