VALLEY AUCTIONS of German and Humanities at Bucknell University and Cindy Inkrote, Director of

the Northumberland County Historical Society, to produce a driving tour brochure

that highlights the rich Native American and Moravian history in the Susquehanna

River Valley. The “Native Paths” brochure

is the first of its kind in Central PA and was a truly collaborative project between the Visitors Bureau, Bucknell University, and the Northumberland County Historical Society. The brochure takes the reader back to the colonial period, some 270 years ago, when Native Americans, colonists and Europeans came together to trade, negotiate, and live. The brochure follows common paths used for exchange, communication, hunting, and war for Native peoples for centuries before the arrival of the European settlers. The “Native Paths” brochure can be requested for free at www.VisitCentralPA.org or by calling 1-800-525-7320 or 570524-7234. The brochure is broken up into eight stops, beginning at the Shikellamy Overlook, moving to Sunbury and the Shikellamy State Park Marina, up the Warrior Path to Montoursville, and then circles back through Central Oak Heights in West Milton, to Blue Hill at the confluence, and finally to Selinsgrove’s Isle of Que. The brochure was designed by MoJo Active, located in Watsontown. The Moravian Archives in both Bethlehem, PA and Hernnhut, Germany participated in the project by allowing a manuscript map by Joseph Shippen and a stylized image of Chief

Shikellamy to be used in the brochure. Katherine Faull, a local expert on Moravian and Native American cultures, is currently translating various Moravian Missionary diaries from the Colonial Period. She says of the project, “Working with archival materials opened up a new way of looking at the Susquehanna River Valley for me. This tour is my way of sharing those perspectives with both residents and visitors alike.” Cindy Inkrote, Director of the Northumberland County Historical Society says of the initiative, “The Native Paths driving tour offers a wonderful opportunity to follow the pathways of the Susquehanna River Valley’s early inhabitants and to become more aware of the interaction of those cultures. Dr. Faull’s translation of the Moravian diaries brings a new level of understanding to what took place during the 18th century at the Susquehanna’s confluence.” For more information about the SRVVB and the region, go to VisitCentralPA.org FARM & GARDEN & OUTDOOR ITEMS - 23 8’ Disc $375 Leave Message 570-672-9634 4/1. 8’ Harrow/Cultivator$475 Leave message 570-672-9634. 4/1. 2 Row IH 56 Corn Planter,

he Uptown Music Collective (a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit School of Music) has recently been designated as a program approved for funding as part of The Blues Foundation’s Generation Blues scholarship program. The Uptown Music Collective is one of only eleven programs currently approved for funding through Generation Blues, this designation will allow students interested in taking part in the school’s Blues Summer Music Camp, scheduled for the week of July 23, 2012, to apply for a scholarship to offset or cover the costs of their tuition. The Generation Blues Scholarship Program targets young blues musicians and allows qualified applicants, under the age of 25, to study their instrument of choice at reputable camps, seminars and workshop programs. Started in 2010, “We have always had a Blues Workshop and included a healthy helping of Blues education in our lesson, class and workshop curriculum,” said Dave Brumbaugh, Executive Director of the Uptown Music Collective. “Thanks to our relationship with local Blues Foundation affiliate, The Billtown Blues Association, we have also been able to offer incredible Blues experiences for our students including; performing the closing

set at the 2009 Billtown Blues Festival, Jamming at our annual Blues-A-Thon with blues greats Tas Cru and Bob Margolin, travelling down to Memphis to take part in the International Blues Challenge and providing the opening set for this year’s Billtown Blues Festival, June 10, 2012.” The Collective’s Blues Summer Music Camp will help students begin to root through the mysteries of the blues as Uptown Music Collective founder and Guitar Instructor Dave Brumbaugh explains the unique musicality of this important American art form. Participants will trace the history of the blues from its beginnings as a simple folk music to its transformation into an international electric sound that arguably defines the voice of American music. Students will learn to solo like the greats, play musically within a band, and maintain the decadesold blues structure in a low-stress environment with an emphasis on listening and practicing. To apply for the Generation Blues scholarship, visit the Blues Foundation’s website at www.blues.org and click on the Generation Blues link. The dead line to apply for the scholarship is April 15th. For more information about the Uptown Music Collective and their 2012 Summer Music Camps please visit www. uptownmusic.org.

Europe and the USA have many things in common, one of which noted currently is the massive debt crisis both are experiencing because of politicians who fail to learn from history. George Santayana noted that those who fail to learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. In both Europe and the United States, power-hungry politicians have been trying to buy votes with money we don’t have, taxing not only this

generation but every generation in the future, guaranteeing a lower standard of living for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These shortsighted politicos, thinking only of the present, seem to think they can go on forever, steadily increasing the public debt, by just printing more and more money without an equal increase in goods and services, hoping to find someone to buy our consequently less and less valuable bonds. As history has repeatedly shown us, this does not work. Every society that has tried this has collapsed. A prime example is the Soviet Union. If socialism were a better system, we would all be speaking Russian. Previously democratic civilizations and nations that have tried this have collapsed into dictatorship. Germany, the latter printing so much money that its currency became virtually worthless, bankrupting the country, and resulting in the establishment of Hitler’s Nazi(National Socialist) party dictatorship that brought on the horrors of World War II. It is time to rid ourselves of such history-ignoring, out-oftouch-with-reality, power-mad politicians, ousting them from power, and never let them in office again. -Harold Bob Jones REAL ESTATE - 40 Two Lots for Sale in Shik School District, Point Twp., Water elect cable one with Septic installed one without, Perked 0.866, 1.002 Acres 4951870. 5/27. 3 Bedroom Ranch Home, Kreamer. 3 Bedrooms 1 1/2 bath, Large eat in kitchen, Large living room with bay window, sun room addition with deck on 1/3 of an acre. Packwood House MUSEUM to Raffle Handmade Quilt

I

n conjunction with this summer’s “Pennsylvania Quilts II: Patterns and Variations” exhibit at Packwood House Museum, a double nine-patch quilt inspired by an original in the museum’s collection will be offered as a raffle prize by the museum. The quilt was created by the Vintage Gatherers, a group of quilters who meet monthly at “Our Gathering Place” quilt shop in Montoursville, Pa. Each of the nine members made blocks for the “Packwood Double Nine-Patch” quilt using reproduction fabrics similar to those in the original quilt. The blocks were assembled at one of their monthly meetings and donated to the Packwood House Museum

to raffle off as a fundraiser. Raffle tickets cost only $1 each or six for $5, and can be purchased at the museum, located at 15 North Water Street, Lewisburg, during normal business hours of 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday. All proceeds benefit the Packwood House Museum. The winner will be chosen on October 17th. “Pennsylvania Quilts II: Patterns and Va r i a t i o n s ” opens June 12th and will run through October 13th, showcasing more than 30 of the museum’s collection of antique quilts. For more information on the exhibit, the museum, or its programs, or if you are interested in volunteering at the museum, please call 570-524-0323 or visit the museum’s website at www. packwoodhousemuseum.com.
