Take Back Your Backyard From Insects This Season (StatePoint) Summer means sunshine, relaxation and backyard barbecues. But it also means the return of insect season. Homeowners work hard on their backyards, but the nuisance of pesky flying insects often prevent them from enjoying their yards as much

as possible. Not only are insects annoying, they can be dangerous too. Stinging insects send over 500,000 people to the emergency room each year and an estimated two million Americans are allergic to insect stings.

Don’t let bugs keep you from relaxing outdoors. Use these tips to take back your yard from annoying pests. Eat More Garlic Garlic is heralded for its ability to ward off bloodsucking vampires; but did you know eating garlic can repel

bloodsucking insects as well? Garlic is excreted through the pores and acts as a natural barrier to flying insects who don’t like the smell. Eliminate Dangerous Flying Insects The key to insect control is early detection and elimination.

Grab a cold drink, kick back and relax in your yard. You won’t have bugs to worry about anymore.

BLOW OUT SALE ON MULCH

Consider using traps to eliminate bothersome bugs. Not all traps are eyesores. For example, the Black Flag Flying Insect Trap and Lure attracts, traps, and kills wasps, yellow jackets and flies, and can be hung in a tree or staked in the ground; discreetly blending into any outdoor setting. It’s also safe for your family and pets. More information is available at www. blackflag.com. Wear Proper Clothes Bees, wasps, and yellow jackets are attracted to bright colors and floral patterns. The color

black also tends to irritate the insects. Wear light colors such as khaki, beige, or white to avoid being stung. Grow Plants and Herbs Certain plants and herbs, such as rosemary, basil and thyme, emit odors that ward off insects. Not only will these plants help deter unwanted pests; you’ll also have some fresh herbs ready for cooking right in your backyard!

Prepare Your Home For Summer Weather (StatePoint) Cooling your home in summer can be an expensive prospect, especially as temperatures soar well above comfort level. But don’t sweat it. Experts say you can dramatically lower your energy bills and stay comfortable too.

President of Demerly Architects, and chair of the American Institute of Architects’ Custom Residential Architects Network.

into the house instead, says Demerly. Proper insulation will prevent heat from coming in, and a sound ventilation system will help get rid of build-up.

“There are a number of easy adjustments and upgrades, at all price points, that can save you energy and money this summer,” says Mark Demerly,

Roof Venting The roof of your home acts as an absorbent. It’s therefore critical to release heat from your roof so that it doesn’t come

To help get you started, Demerly offers some timely advice:

Start by checking to see if your attic is properly insulated and ventilated. Eave vents, ridge vents, and roof venting materials can help push heat out. Consider adding solar-paneled or winddriven vent pipes, as

these will act to pull hot air out of the attic. This upgrade is useful year-round, as insulation helps retain heat as well. Windows Windows are critical to keeping your home cool, Demerly says. Keep them open when temperatures are moderate and there’s low humidity. Natural ventilation is free! Install a window fan facing outward -- pushing air out, not in -- and open the windows on the opposite side of the house to exhaust the hot air out, and pull in cooler outside air. Also, consider using a house fan for the attic, to move more fresh air into your entire home. Reflect heat out of the house for a larger, yet cost-effective measure by installing window films. You might also consider replacing old windows with a modern energyefficient option made of insulated glass matched with Low-E coatings and argon gasses. Be aware that casement

Basic Home Maintenance Some additional steps you can take to reduce cooling costs include: Paint your house a lighter, more reflective color. If you have a flat roof, consider a lighter colored membrane covering, such as Thermoplastic PolyOlefin (TPO), to reflect light. Green roofs, which cover and insulate the surface from heat, can also be applied to exiting flat roofs. Install more highefficient air units or alternative systems, like geothermal systems, to provide cost savings. Plant trees around your home to shade your

house in summer and cool the air. An architect can help you apply many of these cost-saving initiatives. To find one in your area, visit: http://architectfinder.aia.org/. While improving your home’s energy efficiency will save you money in the long run, avoid spending a fortune on the upgrades. “Remember, tax credits exist for many of these ideas, so be sure to look into them before starting any project,” Demerly adds. A few actions you take now can help you lower your energy costs all summer. Get started today for a cool, comfortable season.

Help Improve Dad’s Health This Father’s Day (StatePoint) Though your dad may be a superhero to you, he is not immune to common health problems that affect men. And as your father ages, his risk for certain lifethreatening diseases increases.

But you can be his superhero this Father’s Day by helping him form habits that promote good health and longevity. Here are some healthy ways to celebrate Dad this Father’s Day:

Go Fishing: Stress is harmful to both mental and physical health, so get some fresh air and a sense of relaxation with a day on the water. Evidence from several studies suggests that incorporating fish into one’s diet can help protect against prostate

cancer because they contain “good fat,” particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Barbecue: If a barbecue is your annual tradition, don’t fret. That fish you catch will go perfectly on the grill with a side of veg-

etables. Tomatoes and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are a great choice. And if can’t forego the beef, don’t char. Charred meats can contain cancercausing carcinogens that lodge in the prostate. Also skip the trans fatty acids found in margarine and give your meal a flavor boost with olive oil instead. Move: Play golf, play tennis, or simply walk off your meal together. Obesity increases a man’s risk of heart disease, aggressive forms of prostate cancer, diabetes, stroke and hypertension, amongst other dangerous health problems, so make maintaining a healthy weight a priority for both you and Dad. Checkup: Prostate cancer affects one in six men, with more than 16 million men affected by the disease globally, and two million affected in the U.S. alone. Early diagnosis can improve one’s prognosis, so encourage your father to schedule an appointment for a screening as soon as possible. Broader awareness and understanding for this disease are crucial for saving lives.

Get Involved: You and Dad can support men’s health while enjoying baseball, by donating money to support finding better treatments for prostate cancer. Each year, during a special “Home Run Challenge,” Major League Baseball and the Prostate Cancer Foundation encourage baseball fans to make a financial pledge for every home run hit during select games June 7-17 at www. homerunchallenge.org. More healthy living tips, a free nutrition guide, and nutritious recipes can be found at www.pcf.org/nutrition. If you really want to show Dad how much you care this Father’s Day, consider forgoing a gluttonous meal and spend the day promoting healthy habits instead.

Cooking The Perfect Pasta (StatePoint) Americans love pasta, and with minor adjustments, they could cook it perfectly. If your noodles are tasteless, clumpy or tough, it’s time to review your technique. Salt the water based on the amount of water you’re cooking with,

not the amount of noodles. Wait until it’s boiling before adding the pasta. Stir immediately, and return your water to a boil quickly. Opt for a range with quick time-to-boil burners. For example, the Italian company Bertazzoni makes ranges with different

size high-efficiency burners, so that any size pot will cook with precision. When the pasta is done, drain immediately to avoid mushiness. For an authentic Italian experience, dive into pasta piping hot.

Maren Parusel will celebrate her third release and second LP, April 29 12, 2012 Readers: PLEASE tell our advertisers “I Saw Your Ad In The Valley Trader” Tightrope Walker, onthrough JuneMay 19th 14 The Valley Trader Maren Parusel will celebrate her third release and second LP, Tightrope Walker, on June 19 via Requiemme Records/BMG Chrysalis. Featuring tracks crafted from a perspective of growing up in Germany and contrasted with the experiences of living in sunny California, Maren Parusel

combines beat-driven melodic pop songs with cunningly deft lyrics, slow-building dynamic tension, pop charm, rock smarts, punk-bred enthusiasm and sly humor.

More on Maren Parusel below.

Press Praise for Maren Parusel What is it that makes a girlish, imperfect voice so irresistible? Liz Phair has it, indie rockers Laura Veirs and Emily Haines have it, and so does San Diego’s Maren Parusel. It’s a sweet, pretty, girl-next-door voice, absent all traces of Auto-Tune—the anti-Aguilera…a 12-track collection of bright, dancey pop called Tightrope Walker, the record has a ’90sflecked vibe (think The Sugarcubes meet The Cardigans)... Tightrope Walker may just be the album that lands this local songbird on the national stage.

12 Steps to a New You (LEWISBURG - March 26, 2012) – In just 12 steps, women with cancer can build their selfconfidence and combat the appearance-related side effects of treatment. With “Look Good…Feel Better”, women in active cancer treatment learn a 12-step process that covers skin and nail changes, and how to deal with hair loss through the use of wigs and head coverings. This free program is run by trained cosmetologists using products donated by the cosmetic industry and takes place in a group setting. The next session will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., on April 2, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Community Health Education Center, in Lewisburg. Pre-registration is required. Please

call 800-227-2345 to register. “Look Good…Feel Better” (LGFB) is a national public service program created from the concept that if someone with cancer can be helped to look good, her improved self-esteem will help her to approach the disease and treatment with greater confidence. LGFB offers suggestions and advice on dealing with the appearance-related side effects of treatment through its Web sites, brochures and group programs offered nationwide. LGFB is a free, nonmedical, product-neutral program offered as a collaborative effort of the American Cancer Society, the Professional Beauty Association | National Cosmetology Association, and Personal Care Products Council Foundation, a charitable organization supported by the cosmetic industry. For information visit www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org or call 1-800-227-2345.

Give the Gift of Hope this Mother’s Day (May 7, 2012) – This Mother’s Day, give the remarkable women in your life the greatest gift of all – hope. Encourage those dear to you to attend an upcoming “Look Good…Feel Better” session. These unique workshops give women with cancer a new sense of confidence. “Although almost all of the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment are temporary, they can be very distressing. Cancer treatments and their very visible side effects can adversely affect even the most confident woman’s self-image,” said Dawn Spuesens, Health Initiatives Representative, American Cancer Society.

Women in active cancer treatment can pre-register for one of the upcoming area sessions. In each workshop, women will learn how to care for skin, hair and nail changes that occur during treatment. “Look Good...Feel Better” is more than just learning how to address these changes; it is also a support group and confidence builder. There are sessions on May 14, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Geisinger Knapper Clinic, Danville, and on May 21, 6 – 8 p.m. at Berwick Hospital, Berwick. To preregister, please call 1-800-2272345.
