In return, participants volunteer to teach horticultural information to the public based on university research and recommendations. Participants meet weekly on

Thursday evenings in Mifflinburg from 6-9pm, from October 3rd to March 3rd (with breaks for academic and religious holidays). Penn State Professors, Extension Educators, and Master Gardeners present on specific topics, including vegetable gardening, native plants, grass and lawn care, fruit trees and much more. The fee for the Penn State Extension Master Gardener Basic Training is $200, and includes a copy of the award-winning Penn State Master Gardener Manual. “I came into this class knowing a fair amount about gardening, especially native plants and organic vegetable gardening, so I thought this would be a refresher course for me. Not only did I learn new things about topics I thought I knew well, but I also learned about horticultural areas of interest I had yet to explore. We began the course with a solid plant biology lesson, which was the framework for the remainder of our studies. I especially enjoyed the classes on fruit trees, ornamental plants/landscaping, and indoor plants. Besides the classroom knowledge, I encountered a wide network of professional educators and learned of many online and print resources.” says Jen Schneidman Partica, Master Gardener Apprentice from the 2018-19 Penn State Extension Master Gardener Basic Training Course. Application form and payment are due by September 21st. Applications are available at: Penn State Extension, 343 Chestnut Street, 2nd Fl., Mifflinburg, PA17844, 570-556-4757. VALLEY DATEBOOK Come downtown to view dozens of unique ice sculptures. Many other activities are planned for the weekend including the Polar Bear Plunge, Frosty 5K, children’s activities in Hufnagle Park and more! This year’s festival is sponsored by Evangelical Community Hospital. Look for their feature sculpture in the park, carved live on Friday, February 7th! We’ve been offering Hidden Lewisburg tours for the past couple years, looking at different parts of downtown, both on foot and by bike. This time around it will be a walking tour. The winter tours last year were quite chilly, so please dress appropriately! We will both start and end indoors in an effort to combat the cold. The focus will be on the North Ward Neighborhood in the northeast quadrant of downtown, including both Market St and riverfront areas. 5 Dates • Feb 14 - Feb 24 Cyrano RiverStage Community Theatre RiverStage presents a witty new adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s much adored tale of language, love, and loss. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, it’s the ultimate swashbuckling romantic story! Swordplay! Wordplay! Love, roses and really long noses! During war time in 17th-Century France, the hero Cyrano is in love with the beautiful Roxane but too afraid to express his feelings to her because of doubts about his own ugliness. Instead, he befriends the handsome but dull Christian and helps the younger man to win Roxane’s heart by writing elegant love letters and teaching him the arts of courtship and poetry. Their adventures unfold from there, taking the audience on a compelling journey through the romantic streets of Paris and the dramatic battlefields of France. Critics have described this modern adaptation as “rhythmically beautiful, humorous, emotionally resonant and convincing… .This version of Cyrano de Bergerac is interesting and entertaining, a thoughtful piece of work which makes many bold choices. This is by far the funniest CYRANO you will ever see…. Three cheers and a flourish of a feathered hat to that!” This ode to love reminds us that sometimes what you’re looking for is… right under your nose. 2 dates left Reading with Reptiles: Story Time at the Zoo Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland Don’t miss our fun and interactive story time series, Reading with Reptiles! We are very very happy with our new hearing aids. We are Both hearing things we haven’t heard in a long time. Even simple things you don’t realize you’re missing. We love our remote controls, that helps us with the television volume. Everybody at Artisan is great. it’s like going to a friends house. They are all professional and we love Lola the dog. I would recommend anyone who has trouble with their hearing to go to Artisan. That’s how we got here and we are very pleased. - Carolyn Krammes, Kenneth Krammes

After watching my wife go through the process of getting her hearing aids, when it came time for me to get them... no other option seemed feasible. The warmth and good natured feeling along with professionalism of the staff and Jennifer are second to none. Everybody was concerned about nothing else but the best for me. My issues were addressed immediately. I am so happy we round this new extension of family. - Paul Benor

I want to tell the world how great it is to hear again. I can’t believe I have waited so long. Its just WOW! The most unbelievable thing is my noise protection program. I can hear at work without damaging my hearing. I love the cell phone connectivity. I can listen to music and talk on my iPhone with my hearing aids. It just makes my life more convenient, I have so much clarity. If you have trouble hearing .... Don’t Wait. - Thomas Lehman

Home Weatherization 101: Tips for a Comfortable Home

(StatePoint) Do seasonal temperatures sometimes leave you frustrated with your home’s lack of insulation? Staying comfortable indoors is a top priority for most people, and luckily, it’s easy to ensure your home is an optimal temperature. With a few quick tips and home defense strategies, you’ll be on your way to a more comfortable abode in just a few hours. Why weatherize? Preparing your home to combat temperature change is an important task for both homeowners and renters throughout the year. Feel uncomfortable drafts? Notice your heating and cooling equipment is continuously running? Tired of expensive

energy bills? You’re not alone: almost twothirds of American adults live in a home that needs to be weatherized, according to recent research conducted by Duck brand. There are many motivations for weatherizing. In fact, did you know… • 54 percent of people weatherize to save money on energy bills • 44 percent weatherize to make the temperature of their home more comfortable • 22 percent do it for greater energy e3ciency Is that a draft? First, you’ll need to identify the source -- or sources -- of leaks. Don’t stress -- it’s easy! Hold an incense stick near potential

draft sources, such as windows and doors. If the smoke blows sideways, you’ll know an air leak exists and it’s time to weatherize. But don’t stop there. Once you’ve identi8ed the leaks, it’s time to stop them. Window and door seals take a beating from normal wear-and-tear and can be a large source of drafts coming into the home. Replace old, cracked seals with such products as Duck Brand HeavyDuty Weatherstrip Seals, which are made

They help to block cold winter air from entering, as well as dust, pollen and insects during the warmer months. For added protection with older windows, an easy-to-install, crystal-clear option like Duck Brand Roll-On Window Insulation Kits can create an additional barrier against cold air. The pre-taped top and easy roll-on
