Proper Pruning is All About the Right Tools (StatePoint) If you are like most homeowners, you need to prune trees, shrubs, bushes and other plants in your yard from time to time. But do you know which tool is best suited for each particular job? Experts say that choosing tools wisely is key to maximizing beauty, and minimizing damage to plants. There are a few things to keep in mind as you go about selecting tools for your pruning jobs, big and small, and landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga., is sharing a few insights to get you started: LLC

• For most basic pruning around the yard, bypass or hand pruners, also known as garden or pruning shears, are go-to tools. Best for making clean cuts through living plants and tree branches, they work much like a set of heavyduty scissors and are capable of getting into tight spots for close, precise cuts. Scott advises against a common pitfall here: the urge to save money. “Since pruning shears see so much use, it makes sense to buy the best ones you can afford. From my experience, inexpensive models sim-

Regular pruning is necessary to keep your yard looking beautiful and well-maintained as well as to improve the health of plants. Be sure you’re equipped with the proper tools and knowledge to do so effectively.

ply don’t last very long,” he says. “A well-cared for, high-quality set of bypass pruners however can be a lifetime investment for the average homeowner.” • For larger branches, Scott says anvil-style shears can be a good choice, which feature one sharp blade closing against a flat, wide blade and work much like a knife cutting against a cutting board. • When it comes to branches of more than 1/2inch (12.7 millimeters) in diameter, loppers are the best choice. Like hand pruning tools, there are bypass loppers, which operate much like a large, long-handled set of bypass shears, while anvil-style loppers use just one cutting blade. “Bypass loppers generally cut with more precision, while anvil-style loppers are typically capable of generating more cutting force,” Scott said.

Still have questions? New online resources can help. (StatePoint) While lighting is an essential piece of new home design; it’s often selected and installed at the end of the building process. What’s more, statement-making decorative lighting is often not part of the initial design at all. “Many builders today are opting for only recessed lighting in new home builds. Not only does this provide inadequate light, it creates a sterile look,â€? says Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications for Progress Lighting. “It’s important to consider decorative lighting in the initial budget to highlight all the other accents and purposeful design in your home.â€? The good news is that today, there are luxury lighting options that suit any budget and lifestyle trend. For example, Progress Lighting offers the Point Dume Collection created by influential interior designer, Jeffrey Alan Marks. Inspired by the California coastline, ďŹ xtures in this fashion-forward collection highlight artistic influence and rich ďŹ nishes. Progress also offers the Design Series, which offers sophistication at accessible prices, along with hundreds of other decorative interior and exterior ďŹ xtures. “For the style impact it gives the home, decorative lighting is deďŹ nitely worth the investment,â€? says Piper Stromatt, interior designer for Curate Custom Homes in Chattanooga, TN. “We’ve tested recessed-only lighting schemes and our clients immediately sense something lacking in the home’s ambiance. We always recommend including decorative lighting, as it increases the perceived value of the home as well as offers a ďŹ nishing touch.â€? Be sure to discuss the lighting plan during your design phase. Once the build has started, it may be more expensive to make changes. When talking lighting with her clients, Stromatt emphasizes these key points:

lighting and reinforce the home’s unique design. As the single focal point for each living area, decorative ďŹ xtures deďŹ ne a space, which is especially crucial in open floor plans. • Avoid installing recessed lighting in rooms where flattering and comfortable light is necessary, such as overhead in the master bathroom or in a nursery where high-wattage lights can be uncomfortable for baby’s eyes. When planning the lighting for your new home, Stromatt recommends asking these questions: • Is the lighting package pre-determined? Often, builders offer a choice of one or more standard packages. Before conďŹ rming your selection, ask what upgrades are available, what the costs are, and if there any design limitations. • What’s the wiring plan? Pre-installed junction boxes, or pancake boxes, offer less flexibility, as light ďŹ xtures must be installed wherever junction boxes are. If your plan doesn’t include decorative lighting, ask for the home to be snake-wired, which gives the flexibility to add lighting wherever and whenever you want. • Are LED light bulbs an option? Often a builder has already selected bulbs, and they’re not always LED. Even if it adds to the cost, the investment to substitute LED bulbs is worth it, providing energy savings, brighter light and longer life. I had a hearing problem, but I would not admit it. The family was always after me to get a hearing test. I heard about Artisan Hearing Technologies and I thought I would try it. I drove past the office a few times before I finally stopped in and had a hearing test. I had hearing loss. No pressure from Jennifer Burget, but I decided to take a hearing aid out on a 2 week trial. I was very surprised at what I was hearing, no more repeating myself, no more huh. The TV volume went down. I love the app for my smart phone, it’s great! If you want the best hearing aids and service I recommend Jennifer at Artisan Hearing Technologies. - John McDermott

I thought hearing aids were much more expensive than what they were. Jennifer took the time with me to make sure I got what I needed and that I understood what I got. I wish I had done this sooner, or at least checked into it. My hearing aids sound amazing. I like to listen to music again and I can hear at work. Artisan has the most up to date equipment, I have been to other places and I know what they do, and their is a difference with the use of the equipment and I know. Jennifer’s level of professionalism is like no other. - Karl Seyler

We want to know. Send us your testimonial. Testimonials: (Looking for some new comments of success) Fall 1991 and January 1992 Testimonials: My cousin and his new wife (both in their early 40’s) were visiting my mom, my sister, and I. My sister asks, “So, how did you meet?” They kind of giggled and asked each other, “Should we tell them?” They said they met through the LYBL column. My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) My sister didn’t have much luck, but in January 1992, I saw this ad that kept drawing my attention. As described, he really wasn’t what I was looking for, but... We met later that month for the first time; got engaged in 1993 and married in 1994. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary this October and we have a 23-year-old daughter who lives out of state. Thank you, LYBL! Mr. & Mrs. J.N. 4/4/17 Testimonial: I placed an ad 1/2/94 and met the love of my life. He has 3 boys and I have 3 girls. We were married 8/26/95 and now we’re the Brady Bunch. Thanks for helping us find each other. KP/DP I will always be grateful to your paper Valley Trader. My husband DH wrote to me and we have been happily married almost 12 wonderful years. We’ve been through many trials and joys and so glad we found each other. K.W/K.H.

4 Hot Home Renovation Trends This Summer versed in top design trends. Having recently purchased a 1960s-era rambler with the goal of taking it down to the studs and remaking it, Colaneri is sharing insights and ideas to help PHOTO SOURCE: Courtesy of John Colaneri

you create a unique space in your own home where all the elements blend together: • Color pop. Find a color to carry throughout the entire home. While many people typically look to paint doors and trim white, consider being creative here. “For my home, which has an open concept floor plan, I knew that I wanted to use a dark color for trim and doors in order to enhance other design elements, such as my kitchen island and hood,” says Colaneri.

When it comes to a renovation, it’s all about potential. With a little vision, you can transform your home into something that you never thought possible.
