PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
CONTENTS
As someone who did not come to photography via a fine arts degree, I did not have the privilege of studying art history in college. I will admit that, in the past, whenever I attended a photography program and the speaker said to study art I was Teri Whittaker, CPP bewildered. I was already overwhelmed at learning how my camera and flashes worked and how to pose and light that the thought of looking at a painting and trying glean inspiration from it was totally beyond me. Thankfully, as I have become comfortable with how to operate my gear and how to pose and light my subjects, I have found that I can, indeed, look at paintings now and be inspired by how the artist used light, color and posing of their subjects to convey their vision. As I have mentioned in previous months, I am a big audio book fan. I recently completed ‘Caravaggio’ by Andrew Graham-Dixon. Granted, it would have been better if I could have listened to the references to his work with a print of the painting in front of me, but it was still very interesting to listen in about his work and his life. I was struck by the enduring legacy of this man’s work, that more than 4 centuries after he died, he is impacting me. It made me think of what legacy means to me and what legacy do I leave my children and my grandchildren. It occurred to me that, as photographers, our legacy-leaving actually has two components. First, our work is our personal legacy, and second, we visually contribute to the legacy of others with our images. My prayers for you are that you are surrounded with inspiration and have a vision towards your legacy. I look forward to seeing you at Rick Ferro’s program on October 18th. Until then.. Teri PS. We are very fortunate that Imaging USA 2017 is in San Antonio. Take advantage of it! The convention is January 8th through the 10th with pre-convention classes beginning January 5th. Go to https://imagingusa.org/ for more information. ON THE COVER: "My friend Eddie Matchette was using our studio to photograph a client that wanted a picture of herself as an action figure. I saw her costume and I asked both of them, if I could take a few pictures for my own use when they finished their session. I knew there was something there, but as usual I was not sure what I wanted to do yet. So I changed backgrounds and adjusted the lights, took a few shots and then later came Photoshop. She was Bat Girl, so what more appropriate backdrop than one with a bat signal. She loves the image and as always its all about having fun with our work. Once in a while you meet an interesting character, take advantage of it, get your creativity going. Everybody tries to please the judges, I enjoy doing this work for me, its my therapy. If the judges like it great, if not its OK, I just go on to my next project. Life is too short, enjoy every day as if it was your last." ~ Armando Chacon, M.Photog. Cr.

Tips for Gathering Fellowship Points
FROM OUR MEMBERS
by Karen Butts, M.Photog., CPP
For a full breakdown of Fellowship Points, be sure and take a look at the document on the PPGH website under Fellowship Information http://www.ppgh.org/ Fellowship_Points_Submission. Hopefully, you have been documenting your Fellowship points throughout the year, but if life has gotten in the way, here are a few tips to help you compile your points. Want to know how many meetings and workshops you attended for the year? Login to the PPGH website and click on View Profile in the upper, right hand corner, then click on Invoices and Payments. You will discover a nice, neat list of everything you attended. How easy is that! Hint: It’s always a good idea to register for the events on line to help keep track of your points. To find out how many merits you earn for image competition, look through old Viewfinders issues found under Subscribe on the website. If you are listed as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place winner, you received a ribbon and these points will count toward your Full Fellowship for which 10 ribbons are required. If you received an Honorable Mention, that means that your image scored an 80 or above and counts as a regular point, but may not be used for the 10 required points for Full Fellowship. Don’t forget about any image competition awards that you may have received in January for the 2015 competition year. Those points will be calculated in 2016 since that is when you received the award(s). Now, you should all know what committees you are on, because you have been working so hard and having so much fun! Right? Remember, you have to serve on a committee for at least 6 months to collect a point. What, you are not on a committee?! Plan to volunteer for one in 2017 for some good times! Remember, you get credit for your activity at the state and national level, too. Are you a CPP or have you earned a degree recently from PPA? Did you attend Imaging USA in Phoenix? As a CPP or other degreed member, did you a judge for image competition? Have you recruited a new member? All of these things count, too! Don’t forget you can download a PDF Fellowship form to help you gather your points so you will be ready to submit them in November. The form can be found under Members Only, Forms and Applications

and then 2016 Fellowship Tracking Chart. So don’t wait until the last minute, start your homework now so you will be ready after the November meeting to submit your points. Committee and Action Team Chairs, I will be asking you for a list of your committee members who served for at least 6 months out of the year, for verification purposes. SUBMISSION: The submission deadline is the Monday following the November monthly meeting. I would recommend that you start gathering your list now but wait until after the November meeting to submit, so you can be sure and receive credit for attending the last event before the cutoff date. This Submission Form can be found under Members Only, Fellowship Information, Fellowship Points Submission. I can’t wait to see who has earned their Fellowship or Full Fellowship for the 2016 year!

Aileen Harding Workshops
PPGH WORKSHOP SERIES
by Theresa Campbell
I was fortunate to attend two workshops in the last few months that were both presented by Aileen Harding. Aileen is a fantastic instructor who filled our eyes and our minds with her experience and knowledge. As a new photographer, I am reminded how very fortunate we are to have Aileen and other fantastic local photographers so available to us! Aileen recently hosted a workshop on senior portraits at her home studio in Baytown. She worked with two young dancers both indoors and outdoors. She demonstrated lighting placement, modifiers, metering, posing, outfit selection, and engaging the client. We watched as she effortlessly conducted full photo sessions with both ladies in dance wear, graduation caps and gowns, street clothes, and sassy dresses. She demonstrated multiple posing options both seated and standing. After lunch, she worked with a male model and athlete. Aileen demonstrated posing do's and dont's for men. As our model was a champion martial artist, she then showed us how to light a man to show muscle definition. She also demonstrated the "eyelighter" setup. She then gave us the chance to photograph the models. Aileen shared many great tips for senior portrait products, vendors and suppliers for each, and lessons learned about the various types of products and promotions. We all left with first hand knowledge of how to set up a successful senior portrait session and follow it up with great product sales. Aileen hosted a second workshop on print competition at the lovely retail studio of Cindy Crofford in the Memorial area of Houston. Aileen provided a handout detailing the International Photographic Competition rules and guidelines. She provided us with multiple resources for designing mattes and developing a pleasing presentation for print competition. We covered the different types of degrees available through PPA, how to obtain merits, and other requirements to obtain a degree. She shared a presentation demonstrating the 12 elements of a merit image and went into detail about judging terms and how they affect our images during competition. We then conducted our own judging on images that she had selected to demonstrate what may not pass a judges critical eye. Overall this was a fantastic training crammed full of information to help us on the journey through print competition and earning those coveted PPA degrees.

Aileen is not only a talented and successful business owner but she is also a judge for image competition. She brings valuable insight from both each of these areas of expertise to every workshop she presents.
