Somewhere along my photographic journey, I began shooting portraits on the side of my various jobs and fell in love with that type of photography. After leaving my newspaper job, getting married
Nicki Evans-Simpson For most of my life, I've had some type of camera in my hands. I guess I really got serious about photography when I was 15. I asked for "big" camera for my birthday. So, my parents took me to Wolf Camera, where I picked out a Canon Rebel 2000. Through trial-and-error, I began making a few good photos here and there. After getting my Canon Rebel, I decided to join the yearbook in high school, which inspired me to pursue a career in photography. I went to school at SFA then Lamar University to study journalism, where I worked at the school newspaper and shot football on Friday nights for another local paper. A summer internship before my senior year led to my first-and-only-full-time-newspaper-job. I worked as the sole photographer for The Baytown Sun for 3-and-a-half years.

and moving to East Texas, I began putting all my photography efforts into my portrait business. My husband and I have recently relocated to the Houston-area where I work as a photographer under the name Nicki Evans Photography.

PPGH- GROWING
DEC 1, 2013
Here are a few interesting notes about your Guild. Last year was a busy one. We had 11 monthly programs, 10 workshops, 1 free members appreciation meeting and 1 all day PPA Educational sponsored Merit program. Our highest attendance was 59 and our lowest was 28. The average attendance for all our meetings was 47. We added 50 new members. 23 Active, 9 Aspiring, 6 Associate and 12 students. 2014 is going to be an even bigger year. In fact it is going to be the best, most involved year I think PPGH has had in a long time. In 2014, we are looking at eleven workshops PLUS 3 additional workshops for getting your CPP, Seven PPA sponsored merit programs are also in the works and once again (with Board approval) we will have a free meeting for all PPGH members (A members appreciation meeting.) We hope each of you will continue to pass around the hard work the guild is doing for it’s members and bring in even more new members in 2014. We would like to thank some of our oldest and most respected members for being a part of the 2013 PPGH and coming out of the wood work and their busy schedules to help make this year such a success. These members have given their skills, knowledge, time and support by attending PPGH meeting and showing all the new kids on the block what professional bling really looks like. “Seeing the Light”
DEC 1, 2013
In the Digital Age
Marshall’s passion is lighNng. He emphasizes that lighNng, mixed with shadows and highlights will accentuate the face by using lighNng applicaNons that include addiNve, subtracNve and reflecNve lighNng techniques. Metering the lights using the addiNve method will give you the best lighNng raNo combinaNon. He also demonstrates High and Low Key lighNng. 3:1 raNo, 4:1 raNo, and 8:1 light-‐ ing raNo are all factors in creaNng dramaNc lighNng. In addiNon, uNlizing loop lighNng, narrow/short and broad lighNng will shape the subject’s face. These types of lighNng techniques add an element of dimension to your portrait. You can master the light, but first you must learn to see the light. There are three main keys to understanding lighNng. They Curley Marshall, CPP
are light placement, the direcNon of light, and the quality of that light. When you understand how to control your lights, you will get the desired effect. Learning to see the light will take your photography to the next level. * Marshall is a premier photographer in the Houston area specializing in weddings, seniors, execuNve, and fashion photography * An award winning photographer with 23 years of photo-‐ graphic experience * Former President of the 2012 fiscal year for the Profes-‐ sional Photographer’s Guild of Houston * Photographic (CPP) CerNfied Professional Photographer from (PPA) Professional Photographers of America * Awarded “Best Portrait of a Bride” 2011-‐2012 by PPGH *Photography/Photoshop Instructor at San Jacinto College located in Houston, TX. *Member of Professional Photographers of America, Pro-‐ fessional Photographers of Texas and Professional Photog-‐ rapher’s Guild of Houston His Motto “We Have Your Image In Mind” “When you learn to see the light, you can master it.”

this passion for a while, I have always seen life one frame at a time.
by: Karen Butts,CPP, Membership Director
Fiona Gilmour - Aspiring I've been a hobby photographer since the age of eight. My brothers had a darkroom and we would spend hours developing film. However, my interest seriously took off after I had my first child twelve years ago. The store that photographed her newborn pictures lost all of them. From that point on, I went digital and never looked back. My business is called Fiona Gilmour Photography. I photograph families, children and school events, but I would like to expand into other areas. Mostly, I am self taught. I'm obsessed with it and a perfectionist. I've spent thousands of hours learning, including attending several workshops and two years of formal study here in Houston, Australia and the UK, all places we have lived. I still have much to learn and would like to mentor with someone, if possible, on weddings. I have three daughters and, thanks to them, my business does okay, as I get a lot of work through school. Kate Hopewell Smith is someone who has influenced my photography. I heard about PPGH through Memories by Maryanne Photography. I am hoping to learn yet more and meet fellow photographers in the Houston area. Alex Cervantes - Student Ever since I can remember, I have been in a car traveling to a vacation spot with a camera in my hands. My dad used to travel for work a lot and bring my brothers and me along. Although I stepped away from 14 PAGE !
I studied accounting and supply chain management at the University of Houston, where I met my wonderful wife Erica. Fortunately, my wife and two kids, Alina and Miguel, have inspired me to make a comeback to photography. Most recently I have been studying photography at San Jacinto Community College with Curley Marshall, who told me about PPGH. I enjoy all types of photography, although portraits that capture the true essence of the individual and landscapes peak my interest. All my free time is dedicated to my family and friends and taking the kids on trips to new and exciting locations. Cary Singletary - Student Faith, family, fun and photos is Cary Singletary. I have always kept a point-andshoot camera readily available, especially at family events, to capture the best and sometimes not so best moments, until about a year ago when my parents urged me to get serious with my craft. Since then, I’ve purchased my first DSLR camera and attended some courses at the community college and the Houston Center of Photography to learn about my camera and how to use it to capture quality and eye-pleasing photos. I heard about PPGH through Curley Marshall, who has been my instructor, mentor, and friend. I have attended workshops, including a PPA Super Monday workshop, and look forward to actively becoming a member, and networking with those who enjoy doing what we do. My goal is to become a professional photographer and to increase my knowledge in a craft that I thoroughly enjoy doing. There is nothing like seeing a smile from
! a subject that loves how you captured them through your lens!
Vera Brock - Student I am blessed to be a grandmother of nine precious grandchildren and a dog breeder of longhaired miniature dachshunds. Between the two, along with my passion for photography, there is always something to shoot. I also love to shoot wildlife. I fell in love with photography as a young girl when I was given my first camera. As an adult, I have tried getting the shots I loved shooting in automatic mode, but something was missing. As a self-taught photographer, I started shooting in manual about a year ago and since then things have started coming around. I realize from seeing images of experienced photographers that it is possible to make that vision come alive on film with education and experience. I heard about PPGH from my instructor, Curley Marshall, while pursuing my education in Professional Photography at San Jacinto College (South) in Houston. Inspired by my family, special friends and Curley, I realized that there are people who believe in me and that it is possible to attain these goals by striving for perfection while doing what I love to do. I hope that by surrounding myself with the talented photographers of PPGH, observing print competition, socialization with the many wonderful photographers and taking advantage of the many educational opportunities, a bit of that talent can be absorbed by me, making myself someone who can be called a true professional photographer. 15 PAGE !
DEC 1, 2013 Nikky LaWell – Active Like many people, my interest in photography started early on, and in high school I started working as a printer, as well as assisting photographers. While earning my Bachelor of Fine Arts, in p h o t o g r a p h y, f r o m t h e University of Houston, I met Carol Andrews and many other members of the Houston Guild. Their friendship and support has helped me strengthen my business over the years. I'm also a member of PPA and a CPP. Joyce Wilson, David Peters and Angela Carson are some of many photographers who have influenced me and I've had the privilege to study with. In 2009, after working sixteen years with Carol Andrews, I opened my studio, Nikky LaWell Photography, a boutique photography studio specializing in family portraits, children, and seniors. My other studio, Itty Bitty Weddings, was opened in 2005 and specializes in weddings with two or fewer bridesmaids.
Laura Mansur - Aspiring I began photography as a young teenager spending many hours in a makeshift darkroom in the attic of my parent’s house. Flash forward thirty years and I found myself entering the photography program of the Art Institute at the age of 48.

I love photographing people, especially women. I have been influenced by many photographic geniuses, especially Joe McNally, Steve McCurry and Sebastiao Salgado.
Meyerson. Ed Cowan introduced me to PPGH, and I am looking forward to meeting more photographers and going to more workshops.
My portraits lean towards a photojournalistic style. In my images, I desire to capture the interaction and the intimacy of the families who honor me by posing in front of my camera.
Theodor Phil Baillou - Aspiring
I consider myself a free lance photographer. The name of my business is LMG Portraits. I am available for events, head shots, high school seniors and second shooter of weddings. Sharon Babbitt - Active I majored in interior design with a minor in photography at Texas State University in San Marcus, always wanting to combined the two. Twenty years ago, I started shooting commercially, photographing interiors for builders, architects, magazines and graphic designers for brochures and annual reports. I worked for Ron Scott, a commercial photographer, for four years before going out on my own. My husband is a graphic designer and illustrator, and we have two sons. After having the boys, it was harder to be away from sunrise to sunset, so I started shooting more portraits. Our oldest is at University of Texas and we have a high school senior. We are soon to be emptynesters. I enjoy knitting, reading, sailing and traveling. I have taken a break from shooting for the last several years to be around for my kids. Today, I like shooting portraits, babies and pets. I am inspired by Ernst Haas, Jay Masiel, Joyce Tenneyson, Kevin Abosch, Keith Carter, Ron Scott and Arthur 16 PAGE !
I’ve always had an interest in photography ever since I first saw a National Geographic and a Life magazine, but I never took it serious until my brother who was a freelance journalist in New York showed me some of his published articles. I bought my first Nikkormat camera, subscribed to most of the photography magazines and took photography classes at the Miami Dade Junior College, The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and the Art Institute of Houston. I have a BA degree in Business Administration and worked for an oilfield service company and a few other businesses. I did freelance photography on weekends photographing weddings, portraits and editorial events. I had my first picture published in the Fotofest 1988 catalogue (p184). My family consists of my beautiful wife Judith and three adult kids, Nilsa, Reynard and Chantal. I heard about PPGH back in the 90’s and attended a few meetings since then but pursued other interests at that time. I’m looking forward to meeting some of the professionals at PPGH to help me with establishing a career in photography now that I have the time.
