In Memory of Mike Hill

n our profession, there are those who give of themselves to others and who ask for nothing in return. They don’t seek public recognition and they are totally content with the satisfaction of knowing they did their best to please their client, to help a fellow photographer in need or to just be someone’s best friend. I have such a friend and his name is Mike Hill. Houston photographers are already familiar with Mike. In 1972, he joined the Professional Photographers Guild of Houston. Two years later, he served on the PPGH Board and was elected as President of the PPGH in 1985. Two years later, the guild recognized his talent for organization and leadership and he was hired as the first Executive Director in the history of the guild. During this time, Mike was instrumental in upgrading the Guild from “Affiliate” status to “Chapter” status with the Professional Photographers of America. By 2003, the Professional Photographers Guild of Houston was one of the largest guilds in the nation.

In those days before digital cameras and instant viewing, photographers had to rely on their acquired skills to make great images in unusual and unpredictable conditions. One of his most famous images was taken of an offshore rig at sunrise from a helicopter. The CEO of Texaco in Houston was so impressed with the image that he ordered a 30x40 to hang in his office. After the image was seen by other executives, Mike ended up printing and framing a number of them in various sizes.

Offshore oil rig was photographed from a helicopter at sunrise by Mike Hill. A 30x40 of the image was ordered for the office of Texaco’s CEO.

Mike continued taking aerials for oil companies until the early 1980’s and the crash of the oil market. In 1983, he decided to diversify his business and moved into a shopping center in Houston. He began attending classes at the Texas School of Professional Photography to further perfect his skills in wedding and commercial photography. That same year, Mike acquired a commercial photography account with Randall’s Food Stores, photographing managers from some 49 stores. This was great advertising for his studio and brought in portraits, weddings and more commercial work.

It was during that time that I met Mike and was asked to join the In 2002, the Texas Medical guild. His friendship over the years Center of Houston hired Mike to has been priceless. The Proclamation was presented to Mike that night at the annual together from a Cessna 180 RG. The high altitude shot was a real challenge gala. because of the humidity and smog. PPGH Member Profile Jennifer Heylmun

Jennifer Heylmun In 2006, I received my first SLR as a Christmas gi] from my husband who understood I had a passion for art and pho-‐ tography. I took on the chal-‐ lenge of learning this tool that captures slices of light and Gme and dove into as many classes and seminars as I could fit in from local professionals, Canon, WestcoO, the Glassock School at Rice University, Texas School, LiOle Red Schoolhouse, and of course our own seminars and speakers with PPGH. I opened Jennifer Marie Photography in 2009. I have lived in Texas most of my life, but my early roots are in New Hampshire with its lush rolling hills, lingering dusks, and sweet breezes. Because of these nostalgic images in my memory 12 PAGE !

as a child, I was drawn to the country side of Fort Bend County from Sugar Land and seOled my family (husband, 3 awesome daughters, 2 dogs, and now a bunny) in 2006 in our current home in Richmond, TX, where we live on a cou-‐ ple of acres of pecan-‐ forested land. Fortu-‐ nately, I am able to use the land and an apart-‐ ment exisGng over our garage for a great home studio set-‐up. I graduated with honors from Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth and earned my B.A. at the University of Texas majoring in Psychology and minoring in French. During my adolescence I seriously studied classical bal-‐ let under the Director of the Fort Worth Ballet and gained a love and appreciaGon early on for the arts in all forms – visual and musical. I have declared my candidacy for CPP, and am working to accomplish that next milestone within the year. My style for portraits is how I live and what I value –relaGonal, classic, environmental, nostal-‐ gic. I incorporate the country sevng and use many props that are authenGc anGques, as I love stories told by pieces of the past – parallel to how our images tell stories.

JUNE 1, 2013

My hearwelt charity that I volunteer for almost weekly is the Rosenberg Animal Control where I photograph and donate images of the sweet pets wait-‐ ing to be adopted. I have also volunteered photography serv-‐ ices for CureSearch – a pediatric cancer research foundaGon, Ad-‐ dison Marshal Crush Cancer, and various school aucGons. One of my favorite quotes is “For it is in giving that we receive.” – St. Francis of Assisi. I really enjoy PPGH and have met so many talented and generous people at our meet-‐ ings and special funcGons – what a great support system. I conGnue to be inspired by new friends, new experiences, and always seeing beauty.

I don’t think I really chose photography it was very natural to me. Photography has ALWAYS been a huge part of my life. My maternal grandmother was a serious amateur portrait photographer that o]en invested in professional photography and my dad was really into nature photography. It was not uncommon for me to receive a camera as a gi] as a child, teen or adult, not that I am complaining. I just LOVED photography. I blew through film like crazy trying to make double exposures, and not understanding why my grandmother discarded such cool images! How much experience have you had in this industry? I am not sure how to judge experience. When it comes to years professionally, the answer would be just over 6. However, if we consider experience in the way of opportuniGes and situaGons, oh my goodness! I have certainly been blessed with experiences and stories I o]en find unbelievable. What is your specialty ? People! I know that sounds preOy vague but that is what I do best! I have a knack for families and seniors and I love liOle babies! I have a good friend that swears I am meant to work with children, I say I love telling a story and documenGng true emoGons. What is unique about you and your business ? I don’t know. I don’t really complare myself to others to find what is different. I 13 PAGE !

PPGH Member Profile Kimberli Smith just know that I am me. I do what I love and not much of anything else. I am a true posiGve thinker and only want what is best for myself, my family and my clients. I certainly never seOle and am always looking for ways to beOer myself and others. What separates you from Sears or Target type portraits business ? The strongest quality I can assume that separates us from chain or higher volume chain studios would have to be the Gme that we invest in our clients portrait session and the relaGonship that is developed. I certainly believe my clients are an extension of my family. What is your current educaGonal level? Prior to photography, I studied and worked as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor. Where did you aOend High School, VocaGonal School, College, Graduate School? I went to high school in Baytown finishing a year and a half early. I received my AAS in Drug and Alcohol abuse counseling from Lee College. When I completed Lee College I decided to move to Pennsylvania to be with my husband and aOend Penn State, a]er realizing that my year le] for a degree in Psychology would transfer as a Liberal Arts degree I decided to put a hold on finishing! photography career the most? The feeling of forever. I just like the feeling I get when I look at something I created and I say "wow!" What do you like about it the least? The self employment part. What do you find most rewarding? My clients. I have been blessed with such a great client base. They flood me with calls on my birthday and cards when I suffer a loss, Would you encourage someone to pursue photography as a career? ABSOLUTELY! I feel that photography is the most rewarding career. You are allowed to be the arGsGc, expressive and families will coo over your images for years and years as their heirlooms. How cool is that? PPGH Mini Workshop-‐Evening with the Masters by: Aileen Harding, CPP

escorted to their various rooms where they could visit with members in private. It was so much fun to peek through the windows of the various classrooms and see people with heads bent over prints or computers, deep in conversaGon. Each interval lasted 30 minutes. A]er all the parGcipants had an opportunity for review, they

The first Annual MeeGng With the Masters was a tremendous success. A special thanks to our Masters who donated their Gme and considerable talent, Buz Marvins, Alvin Gee, Carole Andrews Jensen, Belinda Higgins and Charles Foster. We met at the First Universalist Church on Fannin Street and enjoyed a boxed dinner (generously donated by Tom Hathcock). A]er a half hour of social Gme, the Masters were 46 PAGE

Judging from the enthusiasm and smiles all around, it seems that this will be an annual Mini-‐ Workshop event. Special thanks again to our Masters who parGcipated, Tom Hathcock for all his help and dinner and my commiOee member in charge, Lori Bailey. I can't wait to do it again next year!! were allowed to visit with addiGonal Masters for even more

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS Vanessa Matthews I was born and raised in Bay-‐ town, Texas. A]er high school I at-‐ tended The University of Houston – Clear Lake and re-‐ ceived my B.S. in Healthcare AdministraGon. I then began working for a physician group pracGce.

I have always had a love for pho-‐ tography. As I child I loved taking pictures. Throughout my school years I was always the designated “picture-‐taker,” so, about a year ago, I decided to take my photog-‐ raphy skills to a more professional level. I am mostly self-‐taught, but have aOended several photogra-‐ phy workshops as well as taken many online training courses.

I am the sole owner and operator of Vanessa MaOhews Photography and my true passion is new-‐ born and senior photography. I love capturing those precious moments be-‐ tween a new mom and her new-‐ born, catching an image of siblings who sneak in a hug when mom and dad aren’t looking and captur-‐ ing the special facial expressions children make, when they think I’m not looking. I strive to give seniors an experience they will never forget and show them how unique and gorgeous they truly are! My goal is for clients to look at these images years from now

and be taken back to that special moment. My plan for this year is to focus more on photography and in-‐ crease my client base. I am con-‐ stantly thinking of new ways to improve and new ideas for ses-‐ sions! I would also love to have my own studio so I can offer more to my current and future clients. My family inspires me on a daily basis to follow me dreams and not give up. A]er losing my grand-‐ mother to cancer, I realized how short life is and wanted to capture every single moment! She taught me to do what I love and love what I do. I enjoy spending Gme with my family, friends and my two adorable boxer dogs! I am a night owl and my favorite food is spaghev. I genuinely love helping people and want to do anything possible to make them happy and smile. As a member of PPGH, I hope to build life-‐long relaGonships with other photographers, get inspired, learn new skills and give back to the community.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS Darla Guyton I live in Sugar Land, Texas. I am married and have five chil-‐ dren, three girls and two boys. I grew up in Oregon, but found myself in Texas in the late 80's. I first started in photography in a grade school film photography class. I have loved everything photography for as long as I can remember. I like to shoot in a storytelling style, blended with some video footage, so I can truly capture the moment in Gme in a beauGful and fulfilling way. Guyton Photography is a full service photography home stu-‐ dio located in Sugar Land, Texas. We specialize in high school seniors, engagements, bridals and corporate head-‐ shots. I like to make each ses-‐ sion unique and fun. I work with my clients to create a unique and personalized session either in studio or on locaGon. I am a proud member of Profes-‐ sional Photographers of Amer-‐ ica (PPA), Professional Photog-‐ raphers Guild of Houston (PPGH), Texas Professional Photographers AssociaGon

(TPPA) and Canon Professional Services (CPS). I am also a vol-‐ unteer bereavement photogra-‐ pher for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS). I aOended the Texas School of Photogra-‐

phy this year where I met Kevin Falcon and Vicki Longoria, who encouraged me to join the Pro-‐ fessional Photographers Guild of Houston.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS Eric Ernst I currently own two photography companies; Christopher Studio Pho-‐ tography in Beaumont and Pro AcGon Photos in Baytown. I have always had a strong passion for photography. A]er high school this passion grew into more than a hobby, but a profession. I worked under two Pro-‐ fessional Photographers where I learned how to efficiently run a (Portrait) and (Sport and Event) studio. I enjoy photo-‐ graphing High School Sen-‐ iors because they are al-‐ ways supper excited to be photographed. I appreci-‐ ate PPGH because of the great networking oppor-‐ tuniGes and the great educaGon they have every month.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS Russ Rollins My wife, Mary, and I are naGve Texans and live in Pearland. We have four grown children and two grandkids. A]er 35 plus years as a corporate IT professional, I at-‐ tended a work-‐sponsored class on "CreaGvity and The Human Brain" and discovered that I was the only right-‐brained person in the room. I knew that I enjoyed wriGng and kept a journal and memoirs, but this sudden revelaGon sent me to the local camera store to pur-‐ chase my first DSLR, (I knew I couldn't paint or draw). I took a few shots of my granddaughter, ran them through a trial copy of Elements and never looked back. My formal educaGon is just a couple of workshops and meeGng other photographers but an arGst friend of mine convinced me to see my lack of study as a plus, something about keeping the brain open to experience and per-‐ sonal vision. I am just starGng my business and have had a few modest assign-‐ ments but I keep learning from each ouGng and from my photog-‐ rapher friends. I truly love photo-‐ graphing people but I also have an interest in historical transporta-‐

Gon photography, parGcularly aviaGon and automobiles. At this point in my career, it seems everyone I meet influences me in some way. I found out about PPGH while signing up for a workshop by the Dallas Guild.

They offered a discount, if you belong to a local guild, so I looked up Houston and . . . here I am! I was humbled by the level of expe-‐ rience and knowledge I encoun-‐ tered at my first meeGng of PPGH and learned so much in that one meeGng.
