From the Assistant Rick Sample, PGA Even though Rick is no longer here, I thought this was a good article and worth sharing again The subject of my article this month is practicing your short game. As we all know the short game is a huge part of golf. Many of us don’t spend as much time practicing this part of the game as we should. This is where you can save the most strokes. I have made some observations as I have spent some time at the short game area. One big observation is that almost all of the divots are back at the 45 to 50 yard area. This tells me people are not working
on all the yardages they will face during a round. I don’t know for sure about your rounds but I face shots from between 10 and 40 yards on a regular basis when I play. Learning to hit shots that are not full swings can help your short game tremendously. It can also help with those times when you find yourself under or behind a tree. Many times in these situations you need to hit a club which will travel much farther than the distance you are faced with so you can keep the ball low under the tree. This will require a partial swing so you don’t hit the ball too far. For partial swings I recommend using the clock method. On partial shots think of the numbers on a clock. If you are looking at a clock the ball is at 6 o’clock (the bottom of the clock). In the short game practice area make swings that go from 5 o’clock to 7 o’clock and see how far the ball goes. Then make swings that go from 4 o’clock to 8 o’clock and see how far the ball goes. Keep increasing the length of your swing using the numbers on the clock and learn how far the ball goes with each swing. In this method I am referring to your hands position when talking about how far back and through your swing goes. If you practice these partial swings at the short game area you will have much more confidence when you need to hit a partial swing shot on the course. So take advantage of the short game area and watch your scores go down.
