WELCOME
Paul Swift (Bez) Memorial Trophy 6th April 2014 I’d like to welcome everyone to the game today being played in aid of the Birmingham Childrens Hospital. Bez was a massive Villa and all the players are really proud to be lining up against a team made up of Aston Villa Legends, whilst we’ll be playing in claret and blue ourselves and all wearing Bez’s name on the back of our shirts. Bez is still missed massively to this day but hopefully today we can all play a part in remembering our good friend and also raising a few pound in the process. A massive thankyou to everyone who has come down today, to all the companies that have sponsored the event and to all the players who are playing. Special thanks to Ron and Lorraine Swift for their support and also to Rupert, Jen and Rudy. I hope everyone has a fantastic day! Legends & Lions v Bez Villa XI 3
ABOUT BEZ
Our son Paul Swift, died years ago on October 20th 2008 at the age of 33. We were never given a proper reason as to why Paul died, and his death was finally recorded as Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Needless to say we and all our families and friends were devastated, a parent’s worst nightmare. Paul lived his short life to the full with his many friends and of course his family and left a big gap in all our lives. We didn’t realise just how many friends Paul had, but it was certainly bought home to us at his funeral which was attended by an enormous
amount of people, all wishing to say their last goodbyes. Needless to say Paul will be remembered always, we loved him very much. Four and a half years on and still keeping the memory of Paul alive, the idea of a memorial football match was suggested to us by Paul’s very good friends Sean McDermott and Danny Drewry. Sean and Danny along with the support of many others have arranged today’s charity football match between Aston Villa Lions and Legends and Paul’s amateur football friends. Paul was a lifelong Aston Villa supporter and

ABOUT BEZ
he would have certainly appreciated this event. We game today will be raising money for the Birmingham Childrens Hospital, who gave and continue to give tremendous treatment to Rudy, the son of Paul’s friends Jeanette and Rupert. Such a worthy cause. We would wish to thank all of Paul’s friends and everyone whos has been involved in organising today’s event in Paul’s name. We would also like to give a special thankyou to the Aston Villa Lions & Legends, without whose participation, this event would not have taken place.
The winning team will be presented with the PAUL SWIFT (BEZ) MEMORIAL CUP. Once again, thanks to everyone. Ron and Lorraine Swift

THE CHARITY
Imagine you are 5 years old and going into hospital tomorrow.
It's bewildering, scary and unsettling for anyone going into hospital but especially for children and that is why Birmingham Children's hospital is a fundraising hospital. Whether its ÂŁ5 to fund some crayons and colouring books whilst waiting for test results, or ÂŁ42,000 for a life saving machine that operates as a mechanical heart. Charitable donations are key to making us what we are: a centre of paediatric excellence that the whole country depends on. Our aim for the 250,000 children that we treat each year is that their family knows our care of their child is our most precious priority. Thank you for your interest in us, we hope that you find all the tools and ideas you require to inspire you to support us. The money raised will be going to the Birmingham Childrens Hospital where on the 8th June 2011 a beautiful little boy Rudy was born to good friends of both the players and Bez's, Jeanette and Rupert. Rudy was born with a Critical Aortic Stenosis of the heart and due to the facilities and the dedicated staff team at the BCH, as well as Rudy's fighting spirit, Rudy will be 2 this coming June. Rudy will still require ongoing treatment at the hospital and the money raised from the game will be donated to Wards 11 & 12. This is Rudy as he is today and Rudy will be the match mascot.

LIONS & LEGENDS
Ken McNaught
Gordon Cowans
Pat Heard
Ken McNaught born 11 January 1955 in Kirkcaldyis a former Scottish footballer who played for Aston Villa from 1977–1983 and was part of their Championship winning side of 1981, European Cup victory in 1982 and won the European Super Cup in 1983 against Barcelona, scoring one of Villa's goals in the latter final. McNaught's father was Scottish international footballer Willie McNaught. After impressing in the final against Villa he was signed by the Birmingham club at the season's end. It was at Villa where McNaught's career reached its zenith with silverware in the League, European Cup and European Super Cup in which he scored against Barcelona.
Gordon Cowans born 27 October 1958 in County Durham . Cowans started his career at Aston Villa as an apprentice in 1974, and signed as a professional in 1976. During his time at Aston Villa, he won the League Cup, the League Championship, the European Cup and the European Super Cup. Gordon has returned once again to Aston Villa in a coaching role, first coaching in their youth academy before becoming first team coach and more recently taking on the role of reserve team manager after Kevin MacDonald left under Paul Lambert's new regime.
Pat Heard born 17 March 1960 in Kingston upon Hull is a retired English football midfielder and left-back. In October 1979, the young midfielder was signed by Aston Villa at a valuation of £100,000 (2013: £380,000) in a deal which saw John Gidman move the other way. Heard made nine appearances in his first season at Villa Park but was not one of just 14 players used by Ron Saunders to become League champions in the following season. His single goal came during a 4-3 defeat to Arsenal at Highbury in March 1982. Pat won a European Cup medal after being named as a non-playing substitute for the 1982 European Cup Final.

Lee Hendrie
Tony Morley
Des Bremner
Born in Birmingham, Hendrie was red carded on his debut for Aston Villa as a substitute in a 1–0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers on 23 December 1995. He went on to achieve the accolade of the club's "Young Player of the Season" award in the 1997–98 season. After losing his place in the Villa team during the 2005–06 season it seemed Hendrie's long spell at Villa Park was coming to an end, with Portsmouth reportedly showing an interest in his services. On 29 September he joined Stoke City on loan, on the recommendation of his father. On 30 January 2007, he extended his loan spell with the Potters until the end of the 2006–07 season. Whilst at Aston Villa he played in the 2000 FA Cup Final.
A skilful, nippy winger, Morley enjoyed the best days of his career at Villa Park. He was seen as a wayward genius but was moulded by manager Ron Saunders into one of the most dangerous players around. He was famed for scoring spectacular goals, in particular one against Everton at Goodison Park which won him the 'Goal of the Season' award for 1980–81. He was a vital part of the Villa side that won the League Championship in 1980–81 and the European Cup the year after. His brilliant dribble and cross set up Peter Withe for the winning goal against Bayern Munich in the final. His full Villa record was 170 appearances, 34 goals.
Turning professional in November 1972. He made his only appearance for Scotland while with Hibs in March 1976, coming on as a substitute for Kenny Dalglish in the game against Switzerland. He moved to Aston Villa in 1979 for a fee of £275,000 and quickly settled as a regular in the side. In his second season with the club he was an ever-present as they took the Football League title, their first for 71 years. The following season Bremner was a member of Villa's European Cupwinning side. He left the club in September 1984, rejoining his former Villa manager Ron Saunders, who by then was managing local rivals Birmingham City.

BEZ VILLA XI
The game being played will be for the Paul Swift (Bez) Memorial Trophy. Bez was a well loved, popular and generous man from Sutton Coldfield who passed away suddenly and tragically on the 20th October 2008 from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, his death shocked and stunned both his family and his many friends. Bez was a massive, massive Villa fan and also a well respected man whose smile would light up every room and occasion that he was at. The team to play the “Lions and Legends" will be made up of a group of Bez's friends who are nearly all massive Villa fans themselves and I know that Bez will be kicking every ball with us. The money raised will be going to the Birmingham Childrens Hospital where on the 8th June 2011 a beautiful little boy Rudy was born to good friends of both ours and Bez's, Jeanette and Rupert. Rudy was born with a Critical Aortic Stenosis of the heart and due to the facilities and the dedicated staff team at the BCH, as well as Rudy's fighting spirit, Rudy will be 2 this coming June. Rudy will still require ongoing treatment at the hospital and the money raised from the game will be donated to Wards 11 & 12 which specialise in treating children with heart problems. BEZ VILLA XI
The Players for the Bez 11 All of the lads playing today have known each other for years. We all used to drink in Sutton at The Station, the old Conservatory, Shades and whatever pub was going at the time and nearly all the players knew Bez really well and have also known Rupert and Jen for years as well. We’re all buzzing to be a part of this and hope that we’ll do Bez proud. We’re also proud to be raising money for the Children’s Hospital and are looking forward to little Rudy and Lorraine (Bez’s mom) leading us out on the pitch before the game and it’s safe to say we’ll all be putting on our shirts today feeling honoured to play and be a part of what will hopefully be a great day.

I only knew Bez to say hello to, and occasionally bump into him in the Station Pub. I wish I did know him, because everyone I’ve spoken to has had nothing but great things to say about him, a full of life loveable character with not a bad bone in his body. Rudy is inspirational!! Lovely to see him always smiling on Jens Facebook photos. Jen and Rupert must be bursting with pride for their little miracle and should also be proud of themselves for the Courage they have shown.
Glad to be part of this charity.
