About The AVFPA

Aston Villa Former Players Association was formed in January 1995 and is a non profit-making members association governed by Constitution and managed by former players and others with specific skills. The motivation to create an Aston Villa Former Players Association came from reading a newspaper article reporting the predicament of a former Aston Villa legend who was selling his hard-earned medals, essentially to ‘make ends meet’. So it appeared whilst the Aston Villa Old Stars football team, then in its 35th year, was raising huge sums of money around the country for charities and other very worthy causes, the plight of ‘our own’ was inadvertently being overlooked – something had to be done to prevent a similar situation from ever reoccurring. Within three months the Aston Villa Former Players Association was born, with the core purpose being to care for and assist former Aston Villa players in need, which remains the main focus to this day. A Constitution was written and sanctioned by lawyers, with the following aims and objectives that have been the blueprint for the associations continued success and development.

• To improve the quality of life for former Aston Villa footballers and their families. • To represent, protect and serve the interests, rights, entitlements, benefits and welfare of former Aston Villa footballers. • To provide a framework of opportunity through structure and deed that allows all to participate in and benefit from the activities of the Association. • To promote and further the good name and tradition of Aston Villa and foster a spirit of fellowship, sportsmanship and goodwill among and between former Aston Villa footballers, Aston Villa Football Club and others. • The promotion and organisation of sporting and social activities. • To support and assist charitable organisations and deserving causes. From the beginning, business standards have been applied to the management of the association that continues to operate as a very professional, efficient and effective organisation that is respected throughout the UK and in Europe. www.astonvillafpa.org

Our Purpose

Since its formation, the core purpose of the association is to provide extensive ‘health & welfare’ support to former players and their families that are ‘in need’. Our ‘health & welfare’ programme now includes access to funding and support to former players for – • medical treatment and/or surgical operations • severe financial hardship • re-training and alternative career opportunities • professional support and treatment for those experiencing addiction • the set up of Trust Funds for former players diagnosed with terminal illness • supporting bereaved families and assistance with funeral arrangements and communications • the provision of respite for wives/family of former players that require 24/7 home care • provision of professional counselling and/or therapy services • professional services support, including legal and financial

The association also endeavours to bring solutions to the many important issues, cares and concerns of professional footballers when their playing days have come to an end, whilst simultaneously providing an annual calendar of local, regional, national and international opportunities to participate in sporting and social activities that offer a platform to renew and initiate new friendships. Whilst participating in our annual calendar of events, former players and others are also supporting another primary objective of the association, which is our commitment to raising funds for charities and worthy causes. We are proud that over £5 million has already been raised. It is part of the association’s escalating commercial programme to further develop mutually rewarding ‘business partnerships’ and to generate additional income streams for Aston Villa former players by actively promoting their availability to support promotional and commercial activities. www.astonvillafpa.org

The Aston Villa Old Stars football team was so named and founded in 1960 by former Aston Villa and England international winger Leslie Smith to play matches to raise funds for charity and other worthy causes. He was the first manager of the team, a role he sustained for over 25 years. The Aston Villa Old Stars football team led directly to the formation of the Aston Villa Former Players Association in January 1995, just 5 months before Leslie Smith sadly passed away aged 77. If it had not been for Leslie Smith’s highly commendable foresight it is unlikely that either would ever have existed.
