At least once a week I get questions if we have certain chemical products or substances in our products. In most cases I will just use the SSG Chemical web service and get an answer directly. With the help of the SSG Chemical web service I can also produce the information I get in 11 different languages, which basically helps me cover much of the world.

Chemical Database SSG Chemical web service is a web based system made to support a secure handling of information about chemical products. This information includes among other things a register of the chemicals you are using, documented risk assessments, and easy accessible safety information to everybody in the company that might come in contact with these chemicals. Report After the initial meeting with SSG we found ourselves with a lot of questions. It was unclear to us exactly what they did for their customers. All we knew was that they were really good at what they did and had a lot of experience. The main problem as we see it is that it is quite hard to understand what SSG is actually doing. Why should companies use the SSG products? What benefits will they get?

The SSG products

We soon found out that the services were the key behind the comany. The goal should be to make the SSG products more accessible and easy to understand. We got the feeling that they went to much into details right away, instead of at first just pointing out the basics. It was very hard to understand the products when we got all these details at once and we think that some of their potential clients probably could feel the same way. It is easier for people in a new field to get the bsaic information first. When this is understtod it is quite easy to

add details and ultimately the specifics. Like design you begin with the general information and work toward the specific. To make your services more accessible and easy to understand we think that you should give all your products an identity. This can be done by giving them individual icons or colors. This will help the potential customers to distinguish between the different products and their unique benefits. At the same the feeling should be that the five products belong to the same family. By doing this It will also be easy to later add new services with their own icons or colors.

The folder

At our first meeting we got a folder from SSG which we all read without really understanding what it actually said. Some of the things we noticed were: • The company presentation was at the end of the folder. This was very confusing and at first we thought that the part about SSG Guidelines was some sort of company presentation. We think that it would give a much better base to start the folder with some sort of company presentation. Then the different products can be shown as the parts of the company. • It would be good to communicate one “sunshine-story” for each product in your folder. If the reader sees that the products actually gives value to other companies they will have more trust for the SGG services. Hearing postive results from actual customers is a great way to grab attention.

• To make the folder feel more alive and personal we think there should be more photos, especially of people working. Pictures of machinery or factories relate to SSG’s services but not who they effect. • Another graphical adjustment would be too add more whitespace. Pages that are crammed with text are intimidating to introductory readers. Using less text and more variation the reader can look thourgh it with a relaxed attitude. It needs to be something that they can read quickly to get an idea of what you provide and more importantly the benefits they will get. The first seven pages of this folders shows the direction that introductory material should move towards. The folder that was provided to us would be good in the “detail” stage of communication.

Slogan

Part of simplifing the messge of SSG is developing a brand promise. This is the most simplified way to describe the company. If a company can’t describe what they do for clients in less than three sentences then it will be hard to catch many interested people. To help develop the company motto we gave managers and employees SSG postcards with images representing the company and services they provide. We told them to describe the company or service in five minutes only using the space on the back. This forced them to really think about what information is most important and to explain the most basic meaning of each. By analysing their answers we identified a couple themes that the responses had in common. + The word “help” + The reference to “industry” + The benefit of life cycle and improvement

Using these key themes we developed and slogon or “tagline” that represented the core belief and goal of SSG. “Helping industry grow” Based on this slogan we decided that the graphical image that customers see on letterheads and business cards should betweaked to reflect the the change. The main component of this image is the comany logo.

Logo

One of the most important pieces in company’s profile is the visual contact it has with it’s audience. This is the “face” of the company. The most important thing with the logo is that it is easy to regocnize by the general public as well as your customers. It should translate the feelings that your company wants to project. Along with the new slogan. “Helping industry grow” we gathered the follwoing words from conversations with SSG employees to help guideour designs: - evolution - development - reliability - life cycle - sustainability - new energy The typeface was kept the same as we felt it had a strong presence and customers recognise it imediately. We decided the “square” and color could have minor changes to give it new life while not changing the logo completely.

Specifics

It is important to always keep the logo, typeface, and colors consistent to avoid confusion. It should work also in smaller size as well in black-andwhite. We have included examples and the color codes for number of different systems.

Conclusion

This folder provides an direction that SSG is going and provides examples and suggestions for moving in that direction. It is important to state that design is not a one time endeavor that delivers a new logo or slogan. It is an ongoing process of self-analyis and representation. Use this as a guide for directing future initiatives and development of services and goals. Lik ethe quote says the basis of any business is himan beings. They have a particular need.
