NATIONAL INNOVATION CHALLENGE:
Black startups and entrepreneurs encouraged to pitch their businesses ideas and win prizes INNOVATION: The business scheme is open to a range of sectors and technologies, including AI and Machine Learning. BUSINESSES RUN by black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) start-ups and entrepreneurs are being offered the chance to secure prize money and pitch their business ideas to global brands and
investors. The fifth edition of the Innovation Challenge aims to promote fairness and diversity for a level playing field in the corporate world. In this year’s scheme, “Better Ideas for a Better World”, black and minority ethnic start-ups and entrepreneurs will compete for prizes worth over
£150,000. The best innovators across a wide range of sectors and technologies, including AI (artificial intelligence), machine learning, sustainable cities and consumer health will be highlighted through the competition. Describing his goal for the theme of this year’s Innovation Challenge, MSDUK founder Mayank
LONDON
Shah, said: “We recognise that the last 18 months have been very challenging for businesses, and the innovation challenge is a positive step on the ladder to back to business. We are setting the bar for this year’s entrants very high because we believe that only through greater supplier diversity can our global partners find innovative solutions to the problems of tomorrow.” Now in its fifth year, the Innovation Challenge is aligned to the UN’s sustainable development goals and was set up by MSDUK as part of its year-round programme of initiatives designed to fight the underrepresentation of black and minority ethnic

businesses in the global supply chain. Through this challenge, MSDUK hopes to break down barriers to entry for young start-ups and entrepreneurs from all sectors by providing direct access to a range of highly influential corporate sponsors. The cash prizes act as investment for the winning idea, business scholarships, and mentoring, which will give the finalists the support they require to develop their big ideas into successful businesses. Mr Shah added: “Like every other business entrepreneur in the 21st Century, the executive management boards that succeed will be those that
bring about social change through innovative ideas and technologies. After last year’s truly inspiring array of ideas, I am excited to see what the current crop of EMB social entrepreneurs can bring to the table.” n For more information about the challenge and how to apply visit MSDUK.org The deadline for entries is June 31 2021. The finalists chosen by the judges will take part in a live pitching final, to be held in London on the September 2, 2021. Previously published on the Voice website

NOW MORE THAN EVER WE NEED TO SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESSES
T
he years 2020 and 2021 have been challenging for everyone, history will note this period as the years when Britain and the entire world went into lockdown as a result of the Covid -19 pandemic and sadly, many people lost family and friends. The team at The Voice would like to acknowledge and congratulate our black owned businesses that found innovative ways, including the use of online platforms, to continue providing products and services to the community.
These include many restaurants, bakeries, couriers, food wholesalers, trainers and educators, event organisers, hair and beauty suppliers and carers, to name a few. Unfortunately, many businesses were unable to survive whilst others had to change their business model. Over the years, The Voice has campaigned for the community to support Black owned businesses and three years ago we took the bold step to publish a magazine; The Voice Black Business Guide, essentially showcasing black owned businesses across the UK. This enables us to shine a spotlight on the achievements of numerous self-sustained small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. Many of these businesses are financed and operated by unsung heroes and heroines delivering excellent products and services and, let’s not forget that they all contribute greatly to the UK economy. The global pandemic continues to restrict the movement of people and so it continues to affect the livelihood of black business owners. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for us to unite and support black businesses. For three consecutive years The Voice Black Business Guide has been published and distributed in October to help black businesses in the run up to Christmas shopping, by encouraging consumers to BUY BLACK. In 2020, we too had to pivot and so The Voice Black Business Guide 2020 edition was published in a digital format allowing businesses to have a link directly to their website. This was shared across all the Voice platforms - website, social media. The main reason The Voice is so beneficially important is that it gives black businesses a platform to enable people to find them as they showcase their many products and services to a wider audience. As the guide gives black small business a voice by being the publication of choice for the sector, please read, share and also send us your feedback. With the aim of continuing to highlight the importance of supporting black businesses and their contribution to communities across the UK, we plan to produce another issue in Black History month this year. If you would like to advertise in the October 2021-22 edition, please contact us at: advertising@thevoicemediagroup.co.uk LET US REBUILD TOGETHER!

Fiserv is helping to strengthen small businesses through community Please share a little about what Fiserv is all about. What’s the company’s vision? Fiserv aspires to move money and information in a way that moves the world. We have a proud history of innovation and have been delivering financial services and payments technology to clients for more than 30 years, helping them solve real problems and enabling their growth and success. Our clients include tens of thousands of British businesses that use our technology to accept payments at the point of sale. positive impact in the communities where our associates and clients live, work and play. How has the pandemic hit black businesses and are brighter days ahead? What’s the thinking behind assisting black-owned businesses? Black and minority owned business have been disproportionately impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and
associated lockdowns, and in many cases have found it difficult to access loans and grants intended to help. This has left businesses struggling to survive. Recognising this challenge, and knowing how important small businesses are to their local communities, Fiserv decided to launch our Back2Business program to help businesses not just survive, but begin to thrive. As lockdowns come to an end and people are eager to leave their homes to shop and dine, the outlook is certainly more positive. How is the Back2Business program assisting blackowned businesses? Fiserv has designated $50 million for investment in the
THE MIDLANDS
Back2Business program, a multi-pronged initiative to strengthen small businesses in targeted communities, with a specific focus on supporting minority-owned businesses and investing in the ecosystem of community organizations serving diverse entrepreneurs. Through Back2Business we are providing crucial resources to black and minority-owned small businesses. We are helping strengthen small businesses through community engagement, business expertise, leading technology solutions such as the popular Clover® point-of-sale platform, strategic partnerships and financial assistance in the form of cash grants. We have been humbled by the tremendous stories of resiliency among the small business owners and entrepreneurs who have been part of the program. Please tell us about the Black Leadership Council and their role? The Black Leadership Council (BLC) is an employee resource group (ERG) at Fiserv that strives to improve visibility and promote the importance of a diverse and inclusive workforce within Fiserv. The goal of the BLC is to help engage, empower and develop the talents and careers of our black associates and allies across our company. The council further supports our company’s diversity and inclusion objectives by assisting with the attraction and recruitment of new black associates and the sourcing and retention of black-owned businesses as both Fiserv clients and suppliers. We’re proud to be closely involved in the launch of our Back2Business initiative here in the UK and will be assisting

with outreach to minority owned businesses that are eligible for the program.
“
Through Back2Business we are providing crucial resources to black and minority-owned small businesses
What do black businesses do to assist the overall economy? According to the government-appointed Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities, there are over 250,000 minority-owned businesses in the UK that contribute £25 billion to the economy annually. These businesses are the heart and soul of local communities, where everyone knows everyone and there is a strong degree of loyalty and support for one another. As we find ourselves easing out of lockdown restrictions and we try to find some form of normality again, we need to ensure that all such businesses are supported and given the chance they need to reopen and do what they do best – serve their communities.

VOICE BLACK BUSINESS INTERVIEW:
Andrea L Richards of Accounts Navigator Associates
E
stablished since 2003 we are a modern digital accountancy firm supporting Entrepreneurs, Charities, Artisans, Entertainers and Property businesses to skilfully navigate towards business growth and success. VBBG: How did you grow from working by yourself to having an office and a team? Andrea: I made the decision to run my own business when I was made redundant from my job. I started doing freelance jobs for various businesses and gradually the businesses started building up - I found myself working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep up. As my client base grew, I decided to take on my first member of staff in 2011, and from there I have built a tightknit and reliable team who are dedicated to getting the job done to a high standard
VBBG: How did you/do you grow your business? Andrea: When I started Accounts Navigator in 2003, it was just me, on my own. The growth of my dedicated team has allowed me to focus on bettering myself and the business - I have transi-
you started and how far you have come – nobody can take that away from you.

tioned from working for my business, to working on my business through marketing and networking. VBBG: What advice would you give to people struggling with what other people think? Andrea: As a woman in the industry, I often find people try to ‘undermine’ or not take me seriously. I’ve worked hard to build up my business and grow in the sector, so for people struggling with what other people think remember where
VBBG: What you think can be done to break down the many barriers black business owners, especially female owners face? Andrea: Working in a sector dominated by older, white men I used to struggle with finding my place in the market. I didn’t show my face alongside my business for years because I felt that I “didn’t belong” in this business. However I recently made the decision to challenge stereotypes every day ; yes EVERY SINGLE DAY, because I am not what people picture when they think “accountant” or “business owner”. I am a prime example of why you should never judge a book by its cover and I recommend other female business owners do the same. n

Adapting to our clients needs
I
f there was ever a year that could be called the ‘year of change’ it would be this year. It would be right now. As with everyone in our society, we at Sterling Winshaw Solicitors, have had to adapt and change to the ever-unusual environment created by local and global issues. From implementing more technology to meet
the needs of our clients, to providing services that have become more and more important as the effects of the coronavirus are evidenced in every aspect of our lives. We have observed and listened to our client’s needs and changed not only the way we do things but the services we provide. Our aim has always been to try and meet the de-
Passion for fashion Founded in 2017, three young visionaries Deejay Elmi, Reggie Millah and Ozzy Cherfa wanted to come together and create a brand with a meaning, something you can always associate with a way of life. Three very different individuals in terms of culture and upbringing had one thing in common with their friendship and their everyday way of life; being sincere to anyone that crosses their path. We soon developed a passion for fashion and saw we had something great and wanted the world to see what three local boys from North West London could do, when we came together instead of against each other. We loved fashion and taught ourselves on the world of fashion and how we could get our ideas onto clothing. After many sleepless nights with determination we did that, successfully reaching out to the
whole of London. Even though it was successful, life would take us separate ways and our input in what we had dropped so we did not push the brand to its full potential. In 2019, we decided to come back as we missed the feeling of seeing our brand around the UK and brought it back ten times over. In 2020 we opened our first Headquarters in Neasden, London with a hunger that overcame anything that we have previously had. We aim to motivate other young kids to know that if you come together you can build something that you never thought you could.

Failure and Success were never meant to be separated
F
ailures and Setbacks are an inevitable part of life. I have found this out from personal experience. One of my failures, losing my job has taken me on my current journey of hosting the podcast “My Perfect Failure”. Losing my job, began my fascination with failures and setbacks. What makes Oprah, Jay Z and Michael Jordan different from me, you, the man on the tube the woman on the street. To date, I have been blessed to have the most amazing guests who consistently provide so many answers and insights to the numerous questions I throw at them around failure and success on each episode. Consistently these guys connect the dots revealing the close relationship between failure and success. Guests routinely share their remarkable and personal stories, sharing how they have come back successfully from the most extreme situations. The subjects we cover range from imposter syndrome, growth mindset, self-sabotage, resilience, rebounding,
behaviour change to name a few, What has become abundantly clear from My Perfect Failure is that failures and setbacks need not be our enemy or indeed terminal. Success and Failure go together, they were never meant to be separated. Have you ever met a successful person that hasn’t failed? That would be extremely unlikely or most likely impossible. The trick is not to get side-tracked by our failures, instead focus on our growth during this process. Look out for the learnings and the gifts that failures always leaves in its wake. Don’t take my word for it, just ask. Oprah, Jay Z and Michael Jordan or anybody else you admire. Failure is never the end, merely life presenting us with a new way, an alternative, a new opportunity all we have to do is seize the moment. n

A Trevor Robinson OBE, Executive Creative Director and Founder of Quiet Storm and Create Not Hate speaks about his journey in the advertising industry and how 2020 was the year he decided to reignite Create Not Hate - his way of addressing the lack of diversity in the creative industries.
6’2” story-telling, Guinness-drinking, bigthinking, creative genius. Trevor’s humour is dark and sometimes twisted. He argues this is important when working in an industry that’s about thinking outside the box with explosive ideas. He is funny and modest, and after thirty years in the advertising industry, remains one of few senior black creatives in Britain. “Growing up on the Notre Dame Estate in Clapham in the early ‘80s was an interesting time. It was exciting but the political climate was unsettled: the Cold War was at its peak and social division played out on the streets. This seemed to forge our collective creativity. My influences ranged from music – punk, ska, and soul – through to the alternative comedians that created such a great sense of energy.”
THE NORTH
“My mum came over to Britain in the ‘50s, and a lot of her humour was based on hardship, on conflict, on growing up in a racist environment. I definitely inherited that humour. And also the resilience that it is intrinsically linked to it.” Trevor didn’t love school. He was usually one of the mouthy students at the back of the class, testing the patience of his teachers. Something that stuck with him throughout his working life is a conversation he had with his career adviser at school. He said he’d like to do something creative, she said that his best option was to become a bus driver. He was eleven. The anger he felt in that moment has acted as a spur for Trevor throughout his career. Whether it was looking for a job or trying to win a pitch, it’s stayed with him: a constant driving force. This resilience has undoubtedly contributed to his hugely successful career, from his famous ‘You’ve been Tango’d’ advert of the 90s to his most recent ‘Kids’ Voices’ campaign for Haribo. His creative work reflects his humour: “Me and my creative partner, Al Young, wanted to take the piss out of cause and effect advertising and really catch people’s imagination.” Despite the advice of his school careers adviser, he’s taken his chances in the advertising industry. After building an impressive portfolio, weaving in and out of work and being on the dole, Trevor and Al became well known and respected in the industry. In 1995 Trevor set up Quiet Storm, the UK’s first agency to write, direct and produce its own work. It’s now a top 100 agency, and as a boutique independent, punches well above its weight in terms of international footprint and billings. “What I love about Quiet Storm is everyone is fighting for the same thing, and it makes us quite a potent weapon when it comes to pitches and creating new work. There’s absolutely no room to hide in a smaller business, so you end up with people who are bloody brilliant.” Quiet Storm have a history of supporting social causes and doing pro-bono work for good. They were behind Project Embrace, a campaign which addressed afro visibility in the media, as well as a hugely successful Operation Black Vote which saw record numbers of votes. The agency celebrated its 25th birthday in 2020. While it was unable to party in true adland style due to the pandemic, 2020 was the year which saw Trevor and his wife and business partner Rania (CEO of Quiet Storm and co-director of CNH) reignite Create Not Hate. Create Not Hate was an initiative originally started by Trevor in 2007 in response to the murder of a young black man at his old school. He wanted to get young people affected by gang related violence into creative industries by showing them the ropes.
UK BLACK BUSINESS GUIDE 2021-22
In 2020 the murder of George Floyd highlighted global racial inequality. For British advertising it shone a bright light on the lack of diversity in the industry. “It is shameful and a waste to both parties. The industry is missing out on talent that is going into other industries, and talented young creatives of colour are missing out on even being aware of these opportunities.” Create Not Hate is an initiative where both parties benefit. Young people get to understand the virtues of an industry that has long been invisible and inaccessible to them through workshops, mentoring and industry opportunities. The industry gets fresh thinking, unstrained talent.
of diversity and inclusion to both business and society. Trevor was awarded an OBE in 2009 for his services to advertising. Last year he won the UK Black British Business Award for top Senior Entrepreneur.
“What I love about Quiet Storm is everyone is fighting for the same thing, and it makes us quite a potent weapon when it comes to pitches and creating new work. There’s absolutely no room to hide in a smaller business, so you end up with people who are bloody brilliant.”
The campaign achieved a reach of 500 million with £0 spent and was shared far and wide on social media. As part of the re-launch, CNH was set up as a non-profit, Community Interest Company. This will ensure sustainability and enable them to continue to run programmes for young people every year. The focus of the briefs will change but continue to address important social issues. CNH just need to secure funding. Quiet Storm have recently offered a placement to one of the 2020 cohort, Emmanuel Areoye, who starts work with them in June.
Trevor feels strongly that people should see initiatives which aim to diversify the industry through this lens of balance and equality – a lens that is not tainted by impressions of charity or pity. “It’s important people understand it’s not moralistic to diversify your workforce. It benefits your company. Work is more contemporary, surprising, exciting. Diverse perspectives are often more engaged with the outside world. How can you be doing advertising for the nation when you only have one voice?” The irony that the advertising industry often excludes most of the people that brands are trying to connect with, is not lost on Trevor’s peers. Many agency leaders have been highly supportive of Create Not Hate, offering their own time and resource and pledging to address the lack of diversity within their own agencies. It is becoming widely acknowledged that advertising cannot survive inside a distorted homogeneous bubble. Both Trevor and Rania are regular industry speakers and judges. They often talk about the importance
The revived Create Not Hate brief focused on anti-racism. Over 200 young people took part in the programme which resulted in multimedia campaign, ‘Check Your Prejudice’. This consisted of two short films, posters (included within this paper), t-shirts and face masks, and was launched on Notting Hill Carnival weekend, a celebration of black history, excellence, and futures. All the work was conceived and created by the young people.
“If we can get the whole industry behind us for the long run – to understand the benefits of diversity and getting behind initiatives like Create Not Hate – this is the sort of creative collaboration that will sustain advertising’s future. We don’t need empty mission statements and black squares. We need change. The world is uncomfortable and unstable and, while unsettling, from uncertainty can come great creativity. I’ve had a long and successful career. I want to share the love and pass on the baton to the next generation.”

Transforming Brexit Challenges into Opportunities for Growth
N
ow that the UK has fully exited the EU¹, its international relations are on a new footing. In this vein, relationships between the UK and ACP² countries also had to adjust. There are emerging debates about what this new chapter in international relations means for British companies, as progress takes shape on several fronts, and realities are forged that largely vary per sector. Firstly, and foremostly, the UK’s withdrawal from the EU customs union and single market has had important implications for British companies trading with ACP countries, particularly for goods delivered to the UK via initial ports of landing in the EU (so called “tri-
angular supply chains”), and the 27 EU member states. In order to inform and support (its) members of the Diaspora, the Caribbean Chamber of Commerce in Europe (CCCE), in conjunction with its partners, has updated its general information documents. These documents address amongst other things, the main challenges and implications (see sample document for horticultural export through link) and analyses the different supply chains impacted, such as: • Direct exports to the UK • Direct exports to the EU27 • Indirect exports to the UK via the EU27 • Indirect exports to the EU27 via the UK • Indirect exports to the Rep. of
Ireland via the EU27 and the UK. Secondly, while trading with or through the EU has become more complicated, it has also created some positive opportunities that that businesses in the UK could exploit as a result of Brexit, for example: • Tailoring your products and services in line with your customers’ Brexit “pain points.” These pain points could be around access to cash flow, investments, labour, logistics (e.g. stockpiling goods), taxes, etc. • Tweaking your marketing messages to emphasize how your business is ready to help clients overcome Brexit hurdles. Consider whether there’s a market opportunity for your company to offer tailored Brexit products or
services to your customers by asking yourself: ‘What are our customers struggling with in relation to Brexit, and how can we help them to solve those problems?’ Where and whenever possible, collaborate with others outside your own organization to discuss Brexit implications, stay in the loop on your industry’s responses, and strengthen your business network. n For any further information or support that you may require, please contact: info@caribbeanchamber.eu Note: ¹EU = European Union ²ACP = African, Caribbean & Pacific

Representation matters At Jambo Cards we believe representation matters; in cards, in business and in life. We started with the audacious idea that bringing black card makers together and making black cards available on one platform could transform the card buying experience. It was important to me to support as many card makers as possible. United, I felt we would be able to make a change and scale. Jambo is an online boutique card and gift store where I’ve personally scoured the UK, looking for luxurious, humorous and thoughtful cards. This has led to Jambo showcasing some of the best designs on offer from the black diaspo-
ra. I’m delighted to say we also offer a personalisation service, so cards may be sent direct to loved ones. We’ve found this to be an encouraging hit. I’m on a mission to get black cards into the community, it is with this tenacious spirit I can proudly say Jambo Cards are stocked in: 1. In central London, at 56b Carnaby Street. 2. Wembley Central, 4 London Road, HA9 7EX. This is only just the beginning and will look to expand even further.

Create an empire of
I
t’s not every day that you witness a young black man relocate from Nigeria, start a career working in McDonalds and become the CEO of a multi million pound business; with the sole purpose of changing the narrative of ownership & giving back to the community. Sanmi Adegoke is an award-winning Entrepreneur; a leading UK Real Estate Developer, Property Investor, Acquisition Expert & Philanthropist. He is the CEO of Rehoboth Property International, Suites for Rehoboth, and founder of the co- working and living eco system in Kent, The Hill Hub. From flipping burgers to flipping multi million pound property deals, Sanmi anticipated an impactful life of legacy and service. Aspiring to work within the field of real estate, he realised how there was a lack of representation and knowledge on ownership and legacy within the black community. As a result of this, he educated himself on what it would take to break these barriers with books such as Rich Dad, Poor Dad and guidance of his mentors. As a man passionate on changing narratives, Sanmi was inspired create an empire of wealth and financial freedom through real estate. At an early age, working alongside his mother on various business, he didn’t recognise that these skills were equipping him to build his empire. ‘Land and agriculture is the only tangible thing that God has given us’and with his firm belief in God, he decided to make a stance on these values. All great entrepreneurs have an eye on solving problems for its’ targeted consumers. Being a strong christian believer, he noticed a challenge within the black church community. Historically, black church leaders would find white commercial agents within the real estate industry to identify new buildings for their growing church congregation. However, many of these agents wouldn’t understand what the church leaders were looking for. Being not in line with their faith, it would prove difficult to understand the cultural and spiritual aspect of their business. Rehoboth Property International was birthed as result of this. Being so devout in his Christian faith and the knowledge on real estate, Sanmi slowly became the ‘go to’ real estate developer within the black Christian community. Despite difficult beginnings and although having a unique niche, starting such a company in a competitive industry was very challenging, however, the business excelled to over 3000 clients within a 6-year span, closed in excess of £70,000,000 worth of D1/D2 deals, successfully built, sourced and acquired over
£200,000,000 worth of properties and acquired various ‘trophy assets’ such as Grade 2 listed buildings, court houses, police stations and other exclusive government properties. Growth and expansion was inevitable in a business such as Rehoboth and the importance of ownership and empowering financial liberation were pressing strong on the heart of the business. After solidifying themselves in the marketplace, it was time to shift gears into the avenue of development.
“
From flipping burgers to flipping multi million pound property deals
”
The Hill Hub is an award-winning development by Rehoboth will contribute to a thriving ecosystem for aspiring black businesses. Dartford Police Station has now been converted into the first co working and co living space in Kent. A place of previous pain and trauma has now been reformed into a collaborative space of creativity, mentorship and an incubator for young black disruptive businessmen and women. Shifting the narrative of economic empowerment as a community is a focal point to Sanmi and The Hill Hub does just that. Working alongside the Kent Council and numerous investors, this is the first of its kind in Dartford. The Hill Hub not only offers the traditional workspace amenities in a state-of-the- art style but also a business development partnership. Offering opportunities to start ups, entrepreneurs and fledgling businesses who may not have previously had the opportunity to dream big and believe in themselves. This type of project is to eliminate the negative connotations of the building & create longstanding entrepreneurs. Recently Rehoboth Property International acquired another development project in Camden,
London. This will be a Co-Living and Co-Working style project with different tech, music and creative hub facilities that will be opened to the community. This will be the first of its kind. Obtaining these acquisitions only presses on the ethos of Rehoboth to claim back land and transform them into monumental landmarks. Another creative development from the business is the Camberwell project. From a under- utilised cark park, the proposed scheme consists of a ground floor commercial unit and 43 high quality apartments, including 35% of this as affordable homes. Naturally, pursuing such businesses can never be easy, nevertheless Sanmi understands his unwavering faith in God has been the key in his success especially being in a demanding industry. He truly embodies the philosophy that ‘’All things are possible to those that believe”. With that, doors of recognition started to widen & Sanmi was nominated for The BBBA Entrepreneur of the year, Real Estate Developer of The Year 2020 – Trusted Land and awarded Real Estate CEO of the month by Acquisition International. A man who is tunnel visioned for change and empowerment was well deserving of such accolades. Under no illusion that success comes from family and relationships built over the years with people who love unconditionally. So, coming home after a very interesting day and seeing the smiles on the faces of his kids brings him some much solace and joy in being a father, a loving husband and a faithful servant to God. Continuously closing on more property deals, and with plans to build a city with affordable homes; in Africa for families who would not be able to own their homes; he is a true asset to the black community. Every deal, every business venture serves a purpose, personal gain doesn’t drive him but his businesses legacy and ownership does. A man of morals, being devout & rooted in his faith and also a family man, Sanmi embodies the qualities of a true pioneer. He is zealous about creating long lasting wealth opportunities for the diaspora, allowing spaces which will benefit us in the long run and creating chain link of amazing developments around the UK. n

y name is Pariis Taylor and I am the founder of Post Book’d. For the last 10 years I have focused my career around supporting young care leavers to make a positive transition into adulthood as well as making a positive impact in their communities. Unfortunately, due to Covid19 I lost my job. Through panic and confusion during these uncertain times, we are all unfortunately subject to a change in how we live our lives, but in a strange way it is also quite humbling for myself. During lockdown I have found comfort in my book collection thankfully I have a small group of friends who I can discuss my recent book adventures with. At this point I woke up to the reality that buying £50 worth of book each month and discussing with likeminded people is a huge privilege. My natural thought process was “What can I do?” From this, the idea of Post Book’d was created and self funded! For a reasonable monthly fee our exclusive members club will have access to ethically
sourced books from new and up and coming grassroot writers from the Black and Ethnic Minority communities. As well as our most loved authors and we’ll deliver straight to your door. With my background in Youth Work I knew there was still something needed I needed to do to please my passion for helping others, less fortunate to myself. For that reason, I made a pledge to donate 15% of each monthly subscription, which will go towards providing free books to selected organisations, charities, community groups, or individuals currently living from mental health, homelessness, care leavers, those currently serving in HMP or those financially excluded from accessing some of the best literature we all can take for granted. The responds from our subscribers, press and charities who have received a Post Book’d donation have been incredible, so to ensure Post Book’d can be sustainable long term I have made the decision to kick off a Crowdfunding campaign. n

Hailed as the ‘UK’s first Caribbean frozen ready meal range’ JOI came from a genuine desire to keep his beloved Grandma’s diet fresh, lasting and convenient.’ ‘I would plan and cook weekly meals for my Grandma, but the food wouldn’t stay fresh for long enough – there was a lot of waste and the process became really time consuming. I then started to freeze her food and eventually it just became a thing. She began to tell her friends and soon enough I was supplying small frozen dishes to my Grandma, her friends and other family members. It was at this point that I thought well why not do this on a commercial level and here we are today – Jamaica On Ice’. Mark Richards, Founder Jamaica on Ice (JOI)

It’s never too late to start your fitness journey WHO AM I I’m Janet a proud mother of two sons. I am a Qualified Salsa/Bachata Dance Teacher and Qualified Level 2Gym Instructor & Level 3 Personal Trainer. I have two health conditions, Fibromyalgia and Neurocardiogenic Syncope. Also I’m 51 and Proud ! HISTORY AND EXPERIENCE I have, from a very young age always been into dancing, contemporary dance, Latin and Ballroom, Salsa and Bachata and more recently Kizomba. I have been teaching Salsa and Bachata dance for 10 years and ran my own Salsa classes and club night under the name of Lets Go Salsa! I have also been a regular gym goer and had a few Personal Trainers to help me on my journey. I left attending the gym for a period due to ‘Life’ getting in the way but also suffering from a condition I did not understand at the time. It was around 2002 that I was diagnosed with having Neurocardiogenic Syncope (a type of faint)
and it was 2013 that I was also diagnosed with having Fibromyalgia, a condition that causes chronic pain and many other symptoms. I was ready to give up my dancing in 2013 as dancing was becoming exhausting, painful and caused many Fibromyalgia flare-ups. After being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I did my own research on the condition and found there was a specialist clinic in London which had a Fibromyalgia pain management course. I asked immediately for a referral which turned out to be the best thing I could’ve done as it changed the way I thought and felt about having the condition. The consultant advised me not to give up dancing but to actually try going to the gym and doing some light weights......best advice I had ! It gave me kick start I needed and I went back to the gym, got a Personal Trainer and I’ve never looked back since. Attending the gym has improved my quality of life, I’m stronger, healthier, happier and my fibromyalgia , I now control it, it does not control me. I have been on my fitness journey consistently for the last 6 years and I continue to challenge myself and my learning never stops. Inspiring our future generations
2
021 is a big year for Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones aka The Black Farmer, with two major initiatives in the pipeline – a celebration of Windrush Day in June, and The Black Farmer online Farmshop. Wilfred says “I am proud to be part of the Windrush Generation, it has played such an important part in my story. It is really good to see that now it’s a permanent fixture in the British annual calendar to celebrate the positive impact that those of the Windrush Generation have had on British society,” says Wilfred. “Following on from my hugely successful initiative last year celebrating Black History Month in October, for Windrush Day I have again managed to get all the major UK supermarkets engaged in celebrating our Windrush Heroes.” Wilfred has developed a special range of Sweet Chilli sausages for the occasion – with flavours reminiscent of the Caribbean. Sweet Chilli Pork and Sweet Chilli Chicken gluten free sausages will feature a picture of Wilfred as a six-year-old boy when he first arrived in the UK from his birthplace of Clarendon, Jamaica. “I have created these sausages to honour and recognise the outstanding contribution made by those, including my family, who came to this country in the 1950s and have played a huge part
in inspiring our future generations. As one of the Windrush generation, I feel it is important to create greater national awareness of this special day.” Alongside the packs of The Black Farmer products in store, Wilfred has commissioned a poster and social media campaign to spread the message far and wide.
“
His greatest wish is for every young person to achieve their dreams
”
“I am using the strapline ‘Inspiring the Future’ and I hope that my personal story will be an inspiration for any black youngster who has dreams to be whatever they want to be,” he says. As with everything Wilfred does, his greatest wish is for every young person to achieve their dreams and their full potential. On a completely different note, Wilfred is excited about the launch of his new, updated and massively expanded website for his online Farmshop. “I launched my online Farmshop late last year, and consumer response has been fantastic. So, I knew the concept worked and I have been on a
mission ever since to expand the range of products on offer to my customers.” So much so that Wilfred has now set up his own fulfilment centre so he can offer a far more personal service to customers, and, more important, many more products. “I have put together a group of local quality producers who offer a far wider range of meat and poultry. I have also now added a fabulous range of fresh fish, condiments and deli items. My range of handmade pies are truly exceptional, and I can’t wait for people to try them! And then of course my famous gluten free sausages – our online best sellers. Our Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork sausages launched during Black History month to much acclaim have become a priority item for many of my customers! A range of beer and wine have been added so that customers can have something good to drink to accompany their meal. Customers can make up their own box or choose from a choice of ‘set boxes’ which offer a preselected bundle of products designed to suit any number of occasions. The newly expanded site is due to go live at the beginning of May. “All in all, 2021 has gone off with a bang and I am looking forward to seeing these initiatives come to fruition as the year progresses!” concludes Wilfred. n

as Olas has been a brand that has been in the works since 2018, it came about through travels and what we realised is the whole diaspora is disconnected, and there’s a way we can connect everyone through rum. As London boys from African and Caribbean decent there no alcohol that represents the unity and multicultural way we grew up. Las Olas means waves in Spanish but doesn’t play in to the pirate theme with dark history. In fact we pay homage to the Garifuna community we visited in Guatemala, decedents of ship wrecked slaves from west Africa who landed in St Vincent and created their own communities. We launched Las Olas in December 2019 and since then we have been embraced by some of the UKs biggest stars like Stormzy and many others, We steadily progressed and was affected by the pandemic like everyone else but we were supported heavily by our community. This gave us an idea, why stop at Rum we want to be there on your best days and we want to be the gift you choose for a loved one or treat for yourself. Realign Life was born from my intense dislike for unnecessary processes that get in the way of delivering transformational people strategies. I have worked with (and for) organisations where the needs of employees rarely come first, creating working environments where talented people leave or stay long enough to lose themselves in ‘the

Inspired by experiences and thoughts shared with others, I create products and resources designed to guide personal reflection and encourage richer connections with others. Two areas that I love. Brief History
GMIX was established in 2016 by husband and wife Olrick and Siobhan Coker. As professional singers, the couple found they needed a boost to keep up with their demanding vocal schedule and set out to create a product which combined the benefits of vocal preservation within a healthy juice drink - therein GMIX Juice was born. We soon realised that GMIX also boosts the immune system, decreases inflammation, promotes
healthy digestion and provides quick hydration to name a few. As a result of these discoveries, GMIX is now a juice drink which helps and promotes the

Sunrise Bakery Celebrates 55 Years of Giving the Caribbean Community a “Taste of Home” Sunrise Bakery is one of the UK’s oldest family-run Caribbean craft bakeries. Established in 1966 in Smethwick, Birmingham, the Founders, Herman Drummond and William Lamont, opened their own business to the local Caribbean residents offering “A taste of home”. Three generations on, the bakery has become one of the largest supplier of Caribbean hard dough bread, cakes, and Jamaican spiced buns in the UK, producing over two million products annually across 300 stores, including Asda, Sainsburys, Tesco, and Morrisons. Sunrise Bakery is now run by Herman’s son, Errol Drummond, and grandson, Daniel Drummond. Errol believes that at the heart of the bakery’s success is the business’ commitment to supporting the local and wider community in the UK and in the Caribbean. “Since my dad first opened the bakery 55 year ago, we have strived to make our products the gold standard of Caribbean baking. We recognise that our anniversary wouldn’t be possible without our customers, and that’s why we have always given back by supporting social initiatives that aim to empower our communities.” Daniel, the bakery’s sales and marketing manager, added, “throughout the next month, we’ll also be delivering our tropical cakes to the African-Caribbean charities that have supported the elderly throughout the pandemic.” As part of their 55th anniversary celebration, Sunrise Bakery will be launching a new range of vegan cakes and a luxury boxed bun later this year. And as an ongoing effort to keep their products available to customers, the bakery will soon be launching an online store at

My name is Michael Scott and I am a science teacher and online tutor from Nottingham. I qualified as a science teacher from the University of Nottingham in 2008 and began my career as a teacher, inspiring young people all across the city of Nottingham. I have always been fascinated when demonstrating science experiments in class which lead me to start a youtube channel and Instagram page sharing my passion of all things science, regularly uploading videos and content to engage and inspire others to pursue studying science. Many people regularly reached out to me on facebook and Instagram asking what science experiments they could do at home with their children and people would send me pictures of them doing the science experiments at home. Then when the Covid 19 pandemic hit and schools were closed more and more people were asking what they could do to supplement their own home schooling. That’s when I thought to develop my own science experiment subscription, I got to work on Box Lab straight away developing ideas for experiments, content, logos and online science shows to build awareness. So what is Box Lab – as a teacher and a parent I know that young people like to be amazed and they expect that from science lessons, unfortunately students may not get the practical experience from science and many will switch off before their GCSEs. Box Lab is aimed to engage young people (aged 7-12) in science and encourage learning through exploration and creativity. Scientific skills are vitally important for solving tomorrows problems Box Lab prepares your child for the new world ahead!

An ‘Inspiring Young Author’
L
iving her life with sickle cell anaemia, Jenica Leah has battled with the many complications that come with the disorder. From suffering a stroke at the age of 13 to needing a hip replacement at the age of 25 (and many other serious complications that came in between), Jenica Leah refused to let her condition hold her back. She was a fulltime model at the age of 15 and travelling the world organising and managing catwalks with an international events specialist in her early 20’s. Even with all her successes, living with sickle cell and its unpredictability was always something that had an impact in every aspect of Jenica Leah’s life and she was always willing to share her experiences. The more she shared and the more she experienced, the more she realised that there was a lot more people needed to know about sickle cell. So, she decided to dedicate more of her time to creating awareness and educating people about the condition. At 27, Jenica Leah created the first chil-
dren’s book series about sickle cell entitled ‘My Friend Jen’ with the aim to educate people who didn’t know about sickle cell and to give children with the condition the confidence to speak about it openly. The series was a world-wide success with the first title earning her an ‘Inspiring Young Author’ award, as well as several other awards as the series progressed. Being unsuccessful in getting a publishing deal
for her children’s book series, Jenica Leah published through her own book publishing company, JLG Publishing and vowed to help others to bring their stories to life. JLG Publishing now work with amazing writers, helping truly inspirational and valuable stories to be told. Currently, Jenica Leah is an industry specialist speaker for sickle cell, the author of two children’s books, the founder of a fast growing publishing house and a podcast host. She also dedicates her spare time as a youth mentor to young people who live with sickle cell. Her life experiences and journey so far are a clear indication of her resilience and belief that living with sickle cell will not stop her from achieving. n

Founded by longtime friends; Khamisi McKenzie, and Daniel Opoku-Baah, the duo created Drums & Flats as an embodiment of the culture connected to the food they grew up on, the music that has since become the soundtrack to their adolescent years and the pride they have in being native south Londoners.

Their chemistry in the kitchen is based on 20 years of friendship, and a shared passion for feelgood food. And if you speak to either one of the pair, they’ll quickly tell you that good food should always be accompanied with good vibes! Therefore, Drums & Flats was created to do more than just serve people great tasting food, but to share the energy, passion and pride that their culture,

Having opened their first permanent site in Peckham after a series of pop-ups in the area, Drums & Flats are now based in Boxpark Wembley, where they are open 7 days a week serving up a selection of the finest chicken wings in the country. Their infamous South London Fire Wings that are set to leave anyone’s brow dripping with sweat, as well as their prize winning Bangin’ Buffalo wings, and best selling Sticky BBQ Wings, and fan favorite Salt & Pepper wings are all examples of their influences both in and out of the kitchen. As proud children of their respective Jamaican and Ghanian parents, their menu, and preparation methods are also a reflection of these two cultures, as well as a range of influences that they share, and
were exposed to over the years. For that reason, they call it South London Soul Food. Inspired by the flavours that they grew up on, and have come across over the years. The NEW Dating App helping AfricanCaribbean singles find LOVE
D
ayo Israel is on a mission to inspire and celebrate Black Love. Dayo is the founder of Melanin Matchmaker, a unique dating platform that offers a matchmaking service and dating app for singles of African-Caribbean heritage. Dayo was inspired to create Melanin Matchmaker after hearing countless stories of Black people feeling undesired and experiencing racism and fetishisation on other dating platforms. Dayo says “Dating apps can be challenging for Black people. I wanted to create a safe platform for Black people to connect where they felt catered to and most importantly celebrated and appreciated.” Melanin Matchmaker initially started as a matchmaking service in 2019. Its matchmaking service has connected many people who have gone on to start relationships and even has a few engagements. Its free to join their database on a Basic membership, alternatively users can join as a premium member and are assigned a personal matchmaker whose purpose is to get a better un-
derstanding of you and what you’re specifically looking for. In late 2020, Melanin Matchmaker launched its Dating App which is free to download on the Apple and Google Play Stores and has already had tens of thousands of downloads. Dayo says “We realised there was a significant demand for us to create an app where users could find matches themselves. So now our dating service comprises of a matchmaking service for those who want a more personalised, intimate service and also a
dating app for those who want more freedom and autonomy to make connections themselves.” Research from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) found that 32% of relationships that started between 2015 and 2019 had started online. Dayo says “We would all love to meet people organically but in our fast-moving lifestyles we also need to embrace technology, especially in our community. The African-Caribbean community make up just 4% of the UK. When you consider a huge proportion of that 4% won’t be in your age range, reside within reasonable distance or be your ‘type’, it makes finding another African-Caribbean partner quite a challenge. It makes a lot of sense to use a dating app which can make it a lot easier to find your preference as a minority.” Dayo has big plans for Melanin Matchmaker and concludes “Ultimately our vision is to be the go-to service for connecting Black people romantically, not only in the UK but the world.” n Find out more about Melanin Matchmaker at

wice As Hard is an exploration of Black identity in the workplace as well as a blueprint for success, written by entrepreneurial husband and wife Raphael and Opeyemi Sofoluke. Their debut book exposes the obstacles that limit opportunity for Black professional progress, how to challenge racial stereotypes, be productive, find purpose and ultimately design a successful career. Both authors have experienced first-hand what it is to be Black in the working world, and the adversities and prejudices that many can be faced with. However, they also know how to take those struggles and turn them into success. This book shines a light on the hurdles and difficulties that Black people have to overcome in both their careers and their personal lives, and reveals some powerful and practical steps for success. While the world endeavours to become more inclusive, and businesses strive to eradicate discrimination in the workplace, there are still societal stereotypes that can hinder the progression of Black professionals. In Twice As Hard, Opeyemi and Raphael explore their own personal brand of ethics, challenges and in-
sights and invite other contributors to share their experiences and the practical measures taken to realise their goals too. The contributors of this book shed light on discrimination in the workplace at an individual level, but also showcase success in the face of adversity as they share their personal experiences. Industry leaders including Mathew Knowles, Trevor Nelson MBE, Bianca Miller-Cole, Charlene White and Munya Chawawa share their insights to inspire and empower other professionals. Through shared experience, Twice As Hard highlights the positive progress made in recent years, and equips individuals and businesses with the tools they need to enable further advancement of Black workers. Whether you are a member of the Black community starting out or working in the corporate world, or an ally looking for practical and honest advice, this book will empower, inspire, and educate readers. Twice As Hard will get everyone thinking and talking about their attitude and actions, and will continue the fight for a more equal and truly inclusive, understanding society. n

A radical, inno game changer Britain’s first black owned ‘hybrid’ school – a new school for a new era. Introducing HILLEL PARK SCHOOL supported by the HILLEL BRIGHT FUTURES TRUST
W
hen Hillel Park school launches in Autumn 2021, we will be raising-up the next generation of leaders from all and know faith backgrounds. Steeped in a tradition of British academic excellence in Christian schools, we plan to trail-blaze a new, inclusive, education model for the twenty-first century, where no child is left behind. Hillel Park School proposes to be an allthrough, co-educational, non-denomination Christian school. Its passionate founder and Director, Karen Bryson is a British born, Jamaican educationalist and entrepreneur. After a long career in media and then education (she says the two careers are identical for skills sets), Karen is aiming to launch the UK’s first Black female owned, Christian, ‘hybrid’ co-education private school. Following extensive consultation with parents, from all and no faith backgrounds, she became aware of the fact that parents are passionate about the need for a ‘no-frills, affordable, new generation of school model, which embraces both ‘the old world’ with the ‘new world’ of schooling. The school has an inclusive (SEN and multi-cultural) curriculum and community. Karen Bryson, the Director and founder of the Hillel Group of Christian-based services explained that, “The foundation of the school is a parent-led focus, with an established Parent Council that is contributing to the development plans for the school. Our children’s needs are at the heart of the physical and curriculum design of the school”. After more than a decade in education and running her own private after-school provision (Bright Futures 4 All), Karen Bryson explains what led her to build this bold vision for a school. “My parent-clients lobbied me for over two years to start a school. I always refused. Then one day, whilst working in another school as a SENCO, I had a moment of ‘indignation’ yet again,
about a situation involving the transition of children in Year 7. This was combined with more and more anecdotal stories of disgruntled parents (mainly BAME), paying for a private education and not feeling they were getting a good return on their investment. Instead, low teacher expectations, poor pastoral care and a lack of cultural awareness, alongside an intolerance for supporting parents’ teachings to their children on a bible-based Christian view on life.”
“

”
Parents were expressing their desire to have the choice of part home-school their children, and traditional face-to-face teaching and learning, in a smaller classroom setting. Then Covid-19 arrived, and a UK nationwide lockdown changed everything.
During this time Bright Futures 4 All switched operations to online and became a full-time virtual school. We saw the greatest growth of our business since trading. Most parents felt they had a greater sense of insight, engagement, input and control over their child’s schooling. Best of all, it was anchored in a strong consistent Christian ethos – Faith! Love! Service! Resilience! Hillel Park School is modelled on a ‘hybrid’ model of schooling, allowing for parents to be more hands-on for 1.5/2 days a week (online); But for their children to gain the crucial social skills needed to function effectively in society, they attend a ‘formal’ physical school setting at least 3/3.5 days a week. Due to the ‘hybrid’ nature of our school, and small intimate-family size classes (maximum 16 pupils) with a strong ‘FOREST’ learning philosophy (outdoor learning in sheltered areas adjacent to the school), we believe we can perform well in

a smaller space than most schools require. This will reduce the cost of our overheads, alongside reducing staff costs (teachers required for 0.3.5-to-0.4 days including planning). Like most English private schools, we would also have longer days, and holidays that closed the gap between state and private schools, allowing for a happy balance for both teachers and parents. Supporters We have gained the support of a range of individuals, working locally and nationally. Recovering from Covid in the Midlands
A
number of black owned small and medium-sized businesses have been chosen to take part in a mentorship programme from the Black Pounds Project. The initiative from Birmingham-based CJ Webley, hopes to help businesses that have been severely affected by COVID-19. He said: “This mentorship scheme will offer access to a pool of professional advisors who are dedicating their services for free to help kick start the businesses for when we come out of lockdown. “Topics covered will include professional development coaching and training in becoming legally and regulatory compliant across all areas
and, where necessary, funding to help with digital and branding strategies, marketing materials, set up costs, graphic design and finance management.” Each business will receive support for twelve months, and as the project develops over time, The Black Pounds Project hopes to develop a directory of high-quality, professional black-owned businesses. Mentors include Natasha Mills, who coaches Olympic and Paralympic athletes, Nigel Campbell who has more than 20 years of marketing experience and Lucille Roache, who is a business start-up coach, among many others. The Black Pounds Project is a registered community interest company that was founded in 2020.
In June 2020, they launched their fundraising page, and still hope to raise more funds to support black enterprise. The businesses that will benefit from free mentoring span a range of industries. Many of them provide food and beverages such as Craig Markham, who heads up Bubble Bar, where punters are served both alcoholic and soft drinks from a vintage caravan, Dave Daniels from Ms Tita Coffee, a luxury coffee brand that started in Jamaica’s Blue Mountain region, Kenya Marfarlane who is behind Natju that provides fresh,

Maya created and sold hair accessory kits for girls resulting in a slew of sales. Mr Wade Lyn CBE CD DL Founder of Cleone Foods Ltd (1989) the largest manufacturer of Jamaican patties in the UK. Appointed as Deputy Lieutenant in April 2021. How did you become Deputy Lieutenant? It was an invitation from the Lord Lieutenant office in the West Midlands. What does the role of Deputy Lieutenant entail? The Deputy Lieutenant is a Representative of Her Majesty The Queen for official visits. If an organisation requests the presence of a Her Majesty The Queen or a member of the Royal family at an
UK BLACK BUSINESS GUIDE 2021-22
event and they are unable to attend, then the Lord Lieutenant in the area is asked and if he/she cannot attend then one of the Deputy Lieutenants will attend. As the Deputy Lieutenant I would read a message or letter from The Queen thanking them for their services to the community. For example, in November when World War I day is commemorated, all the Lord Lieutenants and the Deputy Lieutenants are all deployed across the region. The Lord Lieutenants are out with the troops in the local areas and the Deputy Lieutenants attend other events to support the Royal family. What are you most looking forward to in this role? I am looking forward to performing this role well and demonstrate to our community that it is a multi-cultural role, they might say from my perspective ‘you’re black, how can you represent the Her Majesty The Queen?’ The Governor General in Jamaica is The Queen’s Representative, and he is black person. Her Majesty The Queen is Head of the Commonwealth and she assigns a number of
persons to represent her in each country. I am eager to meet people in the West Midlands from diverse communities and participate in their activities and celebrations. Is there anything else you’d like to share? It is a great honour to be a Deputy Lieutenant, it demonstrates to the community that anyone from any race can achieve this position. I will endeavour to be a beacon for the BME community so that any young person can aspire for such a role in the future. There is another member from our community who currently holds the position of Deputy Lord Lieutenant in the West Midlands, Martin Levermore MBE DL. Dr Beverly Lindsay OBE OD DL also previously held that role. May I also add that Mrs. Peaches Golding OBE is the Lord Lieutenant of the City and County of Bristol. She commenced the role in 2017 and the commission will run until 2028. n

Time to diversify your marketing for the right outcomes We would like Eagle London will be launching a new consultancy service to help marketers to develop black cultural competency. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of many things for us, particularly the value of purposeful marketing and the role of representation. During the pandemic, we saw how the UK National Health Service (NHS) struggled to motivate the UK population to get vaccinated with a strong consensus of reluctance coming from the black and wider ethnic communities. The NHS communications team had to quickly do a U-turn on their campaign strategy by involving black public health experts and community leaders to advise and influence the vaccine uptake strategy. Reports show that since the NHS has diversified their approach,
“
purposeful marketing and cultural awareness to be of utmost priority both privately and publicly, so as to avoid repeating past communications blunders
”
the uptake of vaccines has increased dramatically across the board, giving us all a strong reminder of the value of culturally tailored communications. Eagle Eye is launched by Philip Osei-Hwere,
Martin Anncou and Ama Frimpong, directors of global black agency Eagle London, founded in 2004. Here’s a quote from managing director, Philip, “We would like purposeful marketing and cultural awareness to be of utmost priority both privately and publicly, so as to avoid repeating past communications blunders’’. The black diaspora is diverse, and no one person can be competent on the ins-and-outs of all black cultures around the world, we utilise our lived and professional black-British experience to localise our offering to the UK. Together with a team and network that boasts a diverse range of black cultural experience and communications expertise. Eagle Eye is set to help marketers build black-British cultural competency that will allow them to develop better communications strategies that will achieve the right outcomes. The scholarship is funded by all three UK major record labels, music publishers, and several of the top independent music companies and music law firms: Sony Music UK, Universal Music Group, Warner Music UK, Sony Music Publishing, XL Records, Beggars Group, Young, Clintons, Hoare Associates and Modest! The scholarship emerged from the abundance of goodwill Richard left in his wake amongst many of the sector’s creators

and shapers, who experienced his support and counsel directly. Wretch 32 (artist, 0207 Def Jam Creative Director) and Taponeswa Mavunga (Director of Africa Sony Music UK) were close to Richard during his life and support the work of the scholarship, which seeks to continue Richard’s legacy of supporting young people with sharp instincts, exceptional talent, drive and ambition, to find their pathway and increase representation at every career stage in the industry. Wretch 32 said “My brother Rich always had time for everyone, he taught me the true values of staying true to your roots. Striving for excellence, whilst giving back. Legacy was always at the forefront of his genius of a mind. Although my brother’s left me in the physical, he has been and will always be, by my side in spirit. It’s an honour to be a part of the scholarship and still be an anchor to the captain of the ship Richard Antwi.” Taponeswa Mavunga said “I’m so blessed to have had a friendship with Richard that spanned over 20 years. He was extremely wise and also generous with an incredible eye for spotting talent within people. This scholarship has been a fitting tribute to a man who strived for excellence in all he did and pushed others to achieve the same and I know he would be at the forefront championing the next generation of cultural leaders” The scholarship is awarded in conjunction with

the University of Westminster, to applicants who hold an offer of a place on the university’s highly regarded Music Business Management MA course. The course acts as a bridge between academic study, research, and the professional world of music business; preparing students to become the next generation of music industry leaders and entrepreneurs. The scholarship was founded in 2016 by
friends and family, as a response to the sudden death of hugely respected industry lawyer, manager and entrepreneur, Richard Antwi, who had contributed to the Music Business Management MA course on numerous occasions as a guest lecturer. The scholarship award comprises full course fees; a bursary of £10,200; mentorship and assistance with work placement aligned with the scholar’s professional focus and aspirations. Previous scholars include inaugural recipient
Jojo Mukeza, Esther Bokuma (aka Estee Blu) and Daniel Beckley, all are now placed within the industry. Phillip Antwi said “We’re really excited about the reopening of applications, which not only lifts our spirits, but offers much needed opportunity to talented individuals in the current climate. There is a real sense of achievement in seeing what the past scholars have gone on to do, and we’re looking forward to seeing what great things new scholars will achieve. My brother, Richard, was passionate about helping others reach their potential and the Richard Antwi Scholarship is an embodiment of his much-used phrase ‘how can I help?’. We hope to see the scholarship grow and continue to honour his legacy in this way.” Jojo Mukeza added “The Richard Antwi Scholarship made a colossal difference and played a huge part in the opportunities that I have in front of me today. I have changed my narrative and it’s now possible to inspire others in my community. Where I am now at 207 Def Jam, one of the best labels in the business that understands the unique experience I bring, I am able to fulfil my career and creative ambitions. I never got to meet Richard personally, but I am receiving the seeds that he sowed in the industry, culture and spaces that I move in as a young black man and for that I’m so grateful.” n

World’s first motivational black male doll
Z
uree Ltd has once again created an innovative doll making it the first of its kind in the world. This doll company first created the most popular black doll, Toya – the first talking Jamaican Patois doll, which created headlines in news media across the world in 2017. Tafari, the new male talking doll, is multi-functional, adding to its uniqueness of being the first of its kind in the world. Tafari’s speech is very motivational as he aims to empower kids to achieve their purpose in life. Secondly, Tafari wears locks to represent black kids across the world who have experienced discrimination because of their hair. He wants these kids to be empowered to love themselves just the way they are. Thirdly, his hair is removable so he can become more baby friendly. In addition, his bald head is showing support to those kids who have lost their hair to illnesses such as alopecia, cancer,
etc. He wants these kids to know they are still incredibly beautiful without their hair. This doll is revolutionising the industry with his unique features but also initiating the conversation about whether boys should play with dolls. In many cultures including the black one, many parents refuse to allow their male toddlers to play with dolls because it is seen as being too ‘feminine’. However, studies have shown that boys who play with dolls are more empathetic, open-minded, imaginative, etc. This will no doubt be a massive debate in the black community. The voice of Tafari has a Jamaican accent but is mainly spoken in Standard Jamaican English so the doll can be more accessible to kids worldwide. The doll is also named after a Jamaican child called Tafari who is a Rastafarian with locks. He is also one of a famous twin in Jamaica, both are dub poets who are quite popular in Jamaica. Zuree aims to empower kids by producing a range of black dolls that represent various skin tones. n

Mother of 4, launches a FREE app for small business owners
C
roydon based Mother of 4 Vee Roberts would have never dreamed of being an Author, Coach or App Owner when she started her business with £100 in 2013. The mother of four had
been told she should “get a proper job” and refused to listen to the naysayers, using her (at the time) 16 years experience of studying and working as a Brand and Marketing Manager. Having worked for brands such as BT, NHS, Public Sector, Retailers, UK charities and International brands, she turned her hands on campaign and brand management experience into her own business insight2marketing. Passionate about helping business owners, she works tirelessly giving free content to small businesses and startups across the globe. Her App, the insight2marketing Brand and Marketing Planner, has been in development for over 2 years and it is one of her proudest moments, because when she began her journey over 8 years ago, she never expected to be releasing an App that could be a game changer for so many businesses. Complementing her book, the 2021 Brand and Marketing Planner (4th edition), Vee launched this free app to empower more business owners with planning and organising their brand and marketing.
Some of the top features of the app include: v Business tips v Monthly Campaign ideas v Free downloadables v Printable checklists v Planning dates v YouTube tips and a special section for offers PLUS more It is free and easy to download and you can get details about the app online now. n

JOKED
“I’ve joked to the PDC that I could persuade Al to dust off his darts and we could represent Jamaica at the upcoming World Cup, as they are a team short.”
Coronavirus restrictions mean it is unclear exactly where and when the World Darts Championship will take place, or if fans will be allowed in. But Hedman says she is just happy to have made it there.
“It doesn’t feel real yet, but when I see my name up there in the draw and against an opponent, it will sink in. “If the fans can be there it will be great, but it really doesn’t matter. I’ve got there and that’s it – what will be will be.”
