Kahu Youth

Matariki Celebrations This Saturday the 15th of June will be the fourth time Kahu Youth has got together with the community to celebrate Matariki once more. It’s now four years since we began – doesn’t time fly! We’ll have workshops, kapa haka and fire poi performances, two bonfires on the shore and loads, loads more; new this year will be an ‘interactive art space’ with artists displaying and working on traditional and contemporary art, as well as a ‘story corner’ for the little ones. Not only that, we’re building a community hangi in the Dinosaur Park too so now everything is in one place. This is a community event in the truest sense of the word, we are always humbled by the level of help, support and plain old hard graft we receive from the community to put this on. With that in mind, we would like to extend a massive thank you to (in no particular order); For the hangi: Tim Davis and Placemakers, Lee Martin, Ray Casey at Firth, Brad the Brickie, John Haggitt and JLD Engineering, Tiritiri lodge,

Snowdrifta and Sarah Scott Architects. For the celebrations: The Ministry of Youth Development, Radio Wanaka & Roy FM, Mitre 10, Four Square, The QLDC & Lakes Environmental, The Wanaka Sun, Snowdrifta, ‘Dynamite’ Dave, M.A.C students in the community plus all the phenomenal local young people and adults alike who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes for the last few weeks to help pull this all together. Without all of you doing what you do, and giving what you give, we couldn’t come close to pulling this off. The celebrations are once again at the Dinosaur Park beginning at 2:30pm and will end a little after 6pm. Koha (Donations) are welcomed for the hangi. We are still working hard to secure the fireworks; if we’re successful they’ll be right at the end!
