Kahu Youth

Matariki Celebrations This Saturday the 15th of June will be the fourth time Kahu Youth has got together with the community to celebrate Matariki once more. It’s now four years since we began – doesn’t time fly!

We’ll have workshops, kapa haka and fire poi performances, two bonfires on the shore and loads, loads more; new this year will be an ‘interactive art space’ with artists displaying and working on traditional and contemporary art, as well as a ‘story corner’ for the little ones. Not only that, we’re building a community hangi in the Dinosaur Park too so now everything is in one place.

This is a community event in the truest sense of the word, we are always humbled by the level of help, support and plain old hard graft we receive from the community to put this on.

The celebrations are once again at the Dinosaur Park beginning at 2:30pm and will end a little after 6pm.

Koha (Donations) are welcomed for the hangi. We are still working hard to secure the fireworks; if we’re successful they’ll be right at the end!

The Wanaka Police have been busy dealing with a variety of incidents over the past week.

I am constantly amazed that people continue to drink drive.

This week three people have been processed for drinking and driving, with one offender reaching almost double the legal limit. Booze impairs your driving reactions, which could lead to a crash.

With the winter weather well and truly upon us, it is important that we remember to drive to the conditions.

There have been two crashes on our roads this week where the drivers have been caught out by ice. Fortunately there were no injuries in either incident.

When taking longer journeys remember to have snow chains, let people know your travel plans and allow extra time to reach your destination.

Over the weekend a Rolf Harris wannabe decided to draw over the windows at the LWC. The graffiti on this occasion was easily removed.

The Minaret Station Pusher Boat was damaged last week while on dry dock at Waterfall Creek. A number of people have been charged with committing this offence.

Many comments have been made about our new roundabout on Ardmore Street. Whatever your thoughts may be about it, the contractors are constantly having the work site signage stolen or knocked over. The signs are left there for the protection of the site workers, motorists and pedestrians, so please leave them alone. Cones are not to be worn as hats when you've had one too many sherbets.

A fire occurred at the Fitzpatrick's Bar on Monday night, which will be sad news for some. Well done to the staff and patrons for acting responsibly in evacuating the premises.

Thanks also to the fire service for such a quick response.
