This coming Saturday the 16th of June, Kahu Youth will once again be celebrating Matariki at the Dinosaur Park. We are now in our third year, and this event just keeps on growing!

This year there will be two bonfires on the beach to keep us all warm in the cold winter evening plus a whole host of workshops, storytelling, kapa haka and fire poi performances all organised and run by local people. Not only that, there will be a much bigger community hangi than last year and new this year, to top it all off, we will be finishing the evening with a massive fireworks display!

This is a real community event, and the sheer volume of young (and older!) members of the community pulling together to make this happen has yet again taken our breath away. We are truly humbled by you all.

We would like to extend a massive thank you to (In no particular order); Te puni kokiri, Radio

Wanaka & Roy FM, Mitre 10, Snow Drifta, Wanaka Mediterranean Market, The QLDC, Lakes Environmental, The Wanaka Sun, Our own local secret philanthropic pyromaniac (You know who you are!), M.A.C students in the community plus all the phenomenal local young people and adults alike who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes for the last few weeks to help pull this all together. Without all of you doing what you do, and giving what you give, we couldn’t come close to pulling this off.

Wanaka Police have dealt with a variety of incidents over the past week. Here are some that you may find interesting or can help us with.

A series of rural burglaries and theft offences have been committed throughout our area over the past few weeks.

On 7th May the Hawea Flat Primary School was subject of a burglary, where the offenders stole three laptop computers.

This is a major loss for the students of the school and we would like to retrieve the stolen items as soon as possible. Contact us with any information you may have.

All rural locations where diesel or petrol is stored have also been targeted. If you have fuel stored on your property take steps to secure fuel tanks and vehicles. Make it harder for the criminals and be vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity you see.

Over the weekend the public toilets at Luggate were vandalised, causing over $2000 worth of damage. Please contact us if you have any information about this.

There have been three crashes during the week. These crashes were mainly caused by ice on the road.

During the winter always plan your journey, carry your snowchains, a blanket and gloves in case the weather catches you out. Chains can be a pain to fit to your car, so have a practice at home or go to any number of outlets that sell chains and ask them to show you how to do it.
