spiring Avalanche Dogs provide a rapid response search dog service to the Southern Lakes region. A non-profit organisation based at Treble Cone and registered with the Charities Commission we rely on fund-raising, sponsorship and community grants to operate. Our dogs train throughout the year and teams are assessed annually by the NZ Police. If you are buried in an avalanche, response time is critical and if you do not have the correct equipment, training and companions, an av-dog team is your best chance of survival.

We now have our own shipping container based at Treble Cone. The container will be

used to store rescue equipment and provide a base for operations. We’re very grateful to Central Lakes Trust for their contribution and Treble Cone for their support. We are now raising funds to purchase a skidoo which will be used to transport the dogs safely around the hill and ensure a rapid response should an emergency occur. We are very grateful to the Graham and Olive West Charitable Trust for their contribution.

By Constable Greg Nolet The Winter Festival has started and the weather has also come on, in true winter fashion. Rain, snow, wind and a bit of inversion, all leading to cold, dark days. Then there is the freezing factor that is turning the roads into ice-rinks, so please take care as there is black ice around. All sounds like fun for a penguin. Unfortunately we are not penguins but just mere humans, so watch out for the dark shady spots on the road, driving to work or school in the morning and home at night time.

The cold weather has brought on some fire wood thefts and some reports of snow workers partying it up late into the night.

For those that do, we will do our best to have your annoying behaviour modified to that of a human state, not an arctic animal.

Crashes on our roads are slowly picking up on the Crown Range Road and Cardrona Valley Road. These are long roads that have lots of turns and shady parts to them. Although the Wanaka side is better than the Queenstown side, do expect a slow trip with tourists getting stuck and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Take chains and know how to put them on. PLEASE do not wait until you really need to put them on, this is generally too late.

Put them on before you get in trouble, and a 4WD is not the complete answer to ice and snow driving, chains are made for these cars too.
