The Upper Clutha Community Arts Council has been supporting the arts in our area for over 25 years.

Application forms are in the Wanaka Public Library or online at qldc.govt.nz/funding_for_ arts

They have just held another successful Autumn Arts School where participants enjoyed classes as diverse as fly fishing and quilt art, with both international and top New Zealand tutors.

Grants have been given for local exhibitions, theatre productions, equipment for a local music group and scholarships for Mt Aspiring College students to attend a drama course.

They also organise the Wanaka Sunday Craft Markets and administer grants from the Central Lakes Trust Arts Support Scheme.

They recently initiated a prize for visual arts for a senior M.A.C student which was awarded to Jessica Jay at the 2012 prizegiving.

Grants of up to $2000 are available to groups from Makarora, Hawea, Wanaka and Cardrona for performing, written or visual arts projects.

1. Last Saturday it was reported to us that the Skate Park toilets had been damaged. Someone stuffed toilet paper in the bowl and set it alight. Also we received reports that someone ripped a door off the hinges at the Dinosaur Park. It baffles me why certain individuals want to damage a public facility. 2. Also last Saturday a female reported that a naked male approached her from his home address on Lakeview Terrace in Hawea and asked her to come and stay. 3. Last Sunday a driver was apprehended on State Highway 84 near MacPherson Street. She was breathalysed and blew nearly double the legal limit. 4. During the weekend a very large amount of money was handed into the station. This was returned to the grateful owner on Monday. The owner was a tourist who has now left town spreading the word about how amazing the people of Wanaka are. 5. On the 6th of May it was reported to us that offenders have spray painted the words "Bobie", "Looner" and "FTP" on one of the college rooms at Mount Aspiring College. 6. Also in the early hours of last Monday two females came out of Post Office Lane. It seems that one of the females took a dislike to the other one and wrestled her to the ground. It seems that when they hit the ground one of the females sustained a cut and left a substantial amount of blood at the scene. The CCTV showed that two other patrons of Post Office Lane offered assistance to the injured female. I would like to know if anyone has any information that would shed light on who was involved in this incident. 7. Lastly, with the cold and frosty mornings upon us, please leave yourself a little extra time in the morning to defrost your vehicles. Ruby The Red Back and Terry The Tarantula have been trying out new ways to get into peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homes. Last week Ruby and Terry, along with their friend Incy Wincy, climbed a water spout. Luckily for the home owner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but less so for the spiders â&#x20AC;&#x201C; down came the rain and washed poor Ruby, Terry and Incy Wincy out. How exactly spiders are able to climb a slippery, vertical surface such as a water spout is an interesting question. One possible answer is that tiny hairs on the spidersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; feet, called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;setulesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, give them an extraordinary grip even on something as slippery as glass. Another point to note is that spiders are not easily discouraged. Once the sunshine had dried up all the rain Incy Wincy, Ruby and Terry climbed up the spout again.
