With Christmas nearly here, it’s a good time to reflect on the enormous contribution made by volunteers over the last twelve months to the health and spirit of our community.

Without these amazing people essential local services and events would cease to exist and our community would be a very different place to live.

Volunteering Central works to increase awareness of volunteering opportunities in the Southern Lakes and Central Otago and encourage more people to get involved. Since 2011, we’ve met with more than 100 community organisations to offer support, successfully connecting them with almost 350 people to fill essential volunteer roles.

National Volunteer Week in June gave us a wonderful opportunity to host morning tea for more than 60 local people as a way of thanking them for their efforts and celebrating the whole concept of volunteering. The theme of this year’s event said it all: ‘He tangata!’ (‘It is people!’).

There’s plenty more work to do, with volunteers urgently required in Wanaka for organisations as diverse as Upper Clutha Plunket, Central Otago Budgeting Services, Challenge Wanaka triathlon festival and Rhythm & Alps.

Last week saw a series of search warrants executed in regard to operation Viking, a drugs investigation that has targeted the sale and supply of LSD, MDMA (ecstasy) and cannabis in Wanaka.

This operation was a real team effort and required the guys to be very discrete, (not easy in a small town), for a number of months. It has been evident for some time that there is a drug culture in Wanaka. I have made this a focus for the last 18 months and have collated and analysed numerous pieces of information.

We were fully supported by Police Management who could see that this was an important issue for the town and that something had to be done.

The culture of drug taking and the nature of the drugs involved causes Police WR KDYH JUHDW FRQFHUQ JLYHQ WKH ÀRZ RQ HIIHFW RI WKH QRUPDOLVDWLRQ RI GUXJ taking within the community and potential exposure of local youth.

Since the start of the investigation Police are aware of at least 4 persons in Wanaka who have become suicidal as a result of their drug taking.

One of those persons made a serious attempt on their life and required hospitalisation.

The picture built by the inquiry team to date shows an apathy to this offending within the Wanaka community. There are many persons on the IULQJHV ZKR KDYH EHHQ LGHQWLÂżHG DQG ZLOO EH VSRNHQ WR LQ WKH ZHHNV WR FRPH There are others who will face charges in due course.

The challenge that faces Wanaka residents is to decide what sort of town they want to live in and what sort of exposure to drugs they want their teenage children to have.

Police are committed to limiting the availability of these drugs. However UHPRYLQJ WKH PDUNHW IRU WKHP ZLOO XOWLPDWHO\ SXVK GHDOHUV RXW RI WRZQ Âą Only the community can help with this.

Some of the persons involved hold prestige in the community and come from a wide array of backgrounds and occupations so don’t stereotype your average recreational drug taker.

Dealing in Class A drugs comes with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for a reason. Experts in medicine and law identify the risks involved and put the legislation in place to try to protect the community.

Every drug addict started out experimenting with drugs. The consequences of drug addiction are the same for every addict and their immediate families, whose lives invariably get destroyed in the process to boot.
