SPCA Appeal 2013

The Wanaka Community Toy Library is celebrating its 20th Birthday.

Toy Library founding member and current librarian Tracy Mayhew said “the toy library began with Heather Wellman, Lynne Quinn and I meeting in the old school house in Kowhai Drive. It was Lynne’s idea to start a toy library in Wanaka after she saw one elsewhere.”

“We began with just a few donated toys and we now have over 900 educational toys for children aged 3 months to 6 years,” she said.

The Toy Library has over 300 members and many more people in the community who would have used the toy library over its 20 years. A year’s membership costs as little as $65 and seasonal memberships are available.

Also a great option for grandparents when their grandchildren are visiting.

For summer parties and events the Toy Library has 2 Bouncy Castles available for rent, one for the under 3s and one for 3-6 year olds.

This month the Toy Library is running one of its major fundraisers, a raffle with a grand prize of a go-cart full of toys. Tickets are available from members and will be for sale at various local events.

A local business was burgled last weekend with the offender making off with a substantial sum of money from the till. Business owners: Please lock your premises after hours and if you are going to leave money on site, ensure it is fully secured. Otherwise take it away and remove the opportunity for these miscreants to make good of others misfortunes.

Despite last weeks friendly warning to obey court imposed conditions, two local stars were arrested for continuing to breach their bail conditions.

We have been informed that a number of youths have taken to swimming in and around the marina. We have been asked by the Harbour Master to remind swimmers that this is not the place to be taking a dip. Aside from being torn up by propellers and jet intakes, there are fuel containers and pumps that could pose a risk to any who ingest any fuel that has made its way into the water. There is a perfectly good pier and miles of beach to enjoy safely.

Cars continue to spin off the road, mostly due to speed and idiotic driving. One driver will be facing the Court for dangerous driving after coming unstuck on Mt Aspiring Road.

Thankfully no one has been killed in the recent week.
