2013 Trip Advisor Winner

Young Wanaka artists now exhibiting The Wanaka Arts Society’s Labour Weekend Exhibition is quickly approaching with a flurry of finishing touches to artworks for the newly introduced Youth Section. With few opportunities for young artists in the region, this exhibition allows students from years 9-13 to exhibit alongside seasoned artists and introduce them to professional practices. I spoke with India Fitzgerald (16) and Emma Stalker (13), two youth entrants for this year’s exhibition. While India has exhibited previously she said, “I didn’t really take drawing seriously until earlier this year when I decided I want to go to art school”. India studies by correspondence and receives feedback from art teachers in Christchurch and Wellington, “It’s a bit hard sometimes, I don’t have them right there to watch techniques”.

India draws most things, but her favourite subject is people. “I like drawing faces,

especially old people – it’s amazing to draw their wrinkles.” She hopes one day to illustrate a children’s book and make art her career.

As for Emma it will be her first exhibition, “I’m proud to be exhibiting and a bit nervous”, she giggles. “Early on I used to paint animals; now I really like painting landscapes. I also like shiny things – cars and these shoes (pictured).”

If you have ANY doubts, PLEASE do not give out any information. Unplug your computer and hang up. Make sure your internet security is up to date. This could cost you a lot of money. The roads are not at the point where the stated speed limit is safe any more. Insurances might not work for you if you have a crash in a road works area and you have been speeding. These are work areas and the workers need to feel safe - slow down. The road to Haast is an iffy trip. Please take it easy and make sure you have plenty of time for the trip. Council Snippets Lost your library card? Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t despair. Between Labour Weekend and 30 November ratepayers and long-term residents can get a replacement library card for free from any of the Queenstown Lakes District Libraries. Our librarians will be encouraging all library members to use their own library cards when getting books out from now on â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that includes children. The reason is so that we can accurately track borrower statistics as part of improving library services for all patrons.

Hazardous Waste Amnesty The long weekend is the perfect time to spring clean your garage, shed and laundry. But what do you do with all the old paint, chemicals, oil, cleaning products, fertilisers etc? QLDC has the answer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; drop them off at the Wanaka Transfer Station during our annual Hazardous Waste Amnesty so they can be disposed of safely. Household lots of hazardous waste up to 50kg can be dropped off for free. Larger amounts will be charged at $10/kg. The Wanaka Transfer Station will be accepting the hazardous waste for safe disposal from 11.30am-3.30pm on both Sunday 27 October and Monday 27 October.
