We responded to a wide variety of incidents in the last week. Here is a snap shot of the week that has been: We received a report of assault - and later that night the two offenders were located and arrested. This week two people were processed for excess breath alcohol and will be appearing in court. We received a report that unknown offender/s keyed all four panels of a parked vehicle. This was a pretty mean Christmas present for the owner. We attended a vehicle accident caused by a driver who pulled out of a car park and failed to see the vehicle coming towards them. Police staff responded to a number of driving complaints that included vehicles weaving and crossing the centre line. Further to the two drink driving apprehensions this week; Police aim to have a fatality free Christmas and New Year period and to achieve this staff will be targeting drink drivers by regularly running alcohol check points. However be aware if you are pulled over at any time of the day or night for a routine traffic matter, the officer will test you for excess breath alcohol. The reason staff do this is that they know from years of experience patrolling, that daytime drivers who consumed large amounts of alcohol the previous night are often still over the drink drive limit. A reminder that from 06.00am on the 27th of December 2013 until 06.00am on the 6th January 2014 the Liquor Ban is in place 24 hours a day. This means that if you are found consuming alcohol within the liquor ban area, you could face a fine or in certain circumstances arrest. Please respect the liquor ban - it has been put in place to curb disorder, damage, violence and most importantly to ensure all locals and visitors to Wanaka enjoy a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Lastly I had the pleasure last week of volunteering for the Wanaka Sun Food Drive. It was heaps of fun and it was wonderful to see all the people who generously gave food and I'd like to give a 'big shout out' to the group of volunteers who pounded the pavement behind the patrol vehicle.
