It's warmed up and I'm happy to report the snow in Hawea has melted. We attended three vehicle accidents this week. One was a vehicle that left the road having overtaken a bus. It then lost control on the grit, on Crown Range Road. Another occurred when a driver lost control on SH6 at Makarora - on a corner in icy conditions - and rolled the vehicle. And lastly, a truck also came off the road and rolled on the Luggate - Cromwell Road, at Queensberry. Ummm its winter, there's ice, then there's grit, then there are road accidents. If you don’t take due care - please take due care. We received a report that 2 dogs were attacking a ram on a local farm. These 2 dogs have been caught. However, it’s a timely reminder to be aware of where your dogs are and to have them confined to your own property. Police dealt with an intoxicated female in the early hours of the morning attempting to get into the wrong house. She made quite a serious attempt to get in, breaking the door handle, and frightening the occupant. Police were called to a pub after a fight broke out amongst members of a stag do. Investigations are still ongoing. We have received a report of windows being smashed on a property on Riverbank Road. The property is a holiday home and Police are working with the owner of the property to ensure nothing was taken. We recovered a stolen motor bike from the side of the Cardrona River near Ballantyne Road. The bike was stolen back in January and returned on Monday night to the grateful owner. I'd like to draw your attention to the intersection of SH6 and SH84, commonly known as the Hawea turnoff. As you are turning right from SH6 towards Wanaka, there is a right hand merging lane. This acts as an extra lane specifically present for vehicles turning right. This lane is what you are supposed to enter as you make your right turn. It allows vehicles coming straight through from the direction of the airport to continue at their speed and safely avoid the turning traffic. The turning traffic then merges out of this lane into the main lane, while giving way to the through traffic on their left. So, when turning please turn into the right hand merging lane and merge politely at the end. For all straight through traffic - all you have to do is carry on straight through in your lane. Police are running a national campaign at the moment directed at restraints. So please don't be surprised if you see Police Officers stationed at intersections, pulling people over and checking that we are all wearing our seat belts.
