BBQ CELEBRATION FOR TE KAKANO VOLUNTEERS Te Kākano’s recent win of the Supreme Award at the 2013 TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards highlights what has already been a great year for the trust. Te Kākano now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2013 Trustpower National Community Awards, to be held in Invercargill in March 2014.

A massive thank you to our grant funders, project sponsors, donors and in-kind sponsors for supporting our various restoration projects. We are also extremely grateful to all our volunteers for their time and energy at the nursery and planting days. It is because of you that all these plants are now thriving.

We’ve enjoyed tremendous support from locals and visitors, young and old, where each

has left their own mark in our landscape. More than 6,000 new native plants have gone out towards 13 different native habitat restoration project sites this year where they now grace local habitat areas from Glendhu Bay to the Hawea foreshore.

There's been a few incidents of wilful damage in and around the town this week. Several windows and lights were smashed in the arcade between Ardmore and Dunmore Streets, at night over the weekend. In a separate incident, sprinklers were damaged at the Dinosaur Park.

A local female was arrested on Saturday after to being told to leave a local bar due to her level of intoxication. She refused, and was arrested.

I have noticed the streets are getting busy at night. It’s party time, it’s Christmas after all. But make sure you know where you are (some need to make sure they know who they are!) and where your friends are. Have a safe way to get home and look after each other.

Cyclists using footpaths are causing a few issues. Cyclists are meant to be on the road. If you think using the footpath will get you off a ticket for not wearing your helmet, you're wrong. Please use the road and stop scaring pedestrians using footpaths.

On the 1st of December the nationwide directive to enforce a 4km speed tolerance came into force. This means that you could receive a speeding infringement travelling at 5km over the speed limit. This will run until 31/01/14. With a bit of luck there'll be a few extra people seeing Christmas this year that might not have without the lowering of the speed limit.

With summer here earlier than usual police and coastguard will start to receive calls about people using the lake and rivers.
