THE YEAR IN REVIEW:

CHEK(HOV) 1, 2

Last fall Webb’s theater program offered an evening of one-act comedies in the style of 19th century Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. Twenty-six actors divided into two casts to navigate their way through unrequited love, imperialist complacency, the ceaseless transformation of despair into complex metaphors‌and other Chekhovian preoccupations. Funny stuff.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOLS

It is with great excitement that I write to you as we begin to prepare for the opening celebration of The Centennial Years at Webb. Next October we will gather together on campus, across the country and around the world to begin the festivities honoring our extraordinary schools and museum, while planning for the next 100 years and beyond.

IM PA C T

As you know, the story of Webb’s first century began in 1922 when Thompson and Vivian Webb founded The Webb Schools on an abandoned school campus in the foothills of Claremont, California. Over these last 100 years, we’ve seen the timeless values first embedded in the Webb School of California tested and reaffirmed, the establishment of the world-class Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, and the founding and flourishing of a singular and extraordinary Vivian Webb School in 1981. Always more than the sum of its parts, The Webb Schools is an educational powerhouse like no other. Now more than ever our world requires leaders who cultivate an unbounded mindset and act with honor and moral courage. Inspiring and nurturing these timeless virtues is what Webb has always

done best—what it will always do. In fact, as remarkable as our first century has been, Webb is poised to make an even greater impact over its next 100 years and beyond. In the coming months, you will hear much more about The Centennial Years Opening Celebration. In the meantime, please enjoy the engaging stories that follow in The Report of the Schools. Inside you will read of our remarkable year—about our creative, hardworking students and the dedicated women and men of the faculty and staff who encourage, challenge and support them. You will read, too, about a series of new programs, renovated facilities, new learning technologies and, most importantly, the incredible community you make possible through your generosity.

It is truly my pleasure and privilege to thank you for your ongoing commitment and generosity to Webb—for your philanthropy and gifts of time and talent. As we approach The Centennial Years, I know your partnership will be central to making our bold vision possible and our values endure well into Webb’s second century.

Sincerely yours,

Taylor B. Stockdale Head of Schools

COLLEGE GUIDANCE 4

The Webb Schools

IM PA C T

Q&A WITH HECTOR MARTINEZ DEAN OF COLLEGE GUIDANCE What was your initial reaction to the college admissions bribery scandal? I was sad, but not surprised. The world of college admissions has traditionally been based on trust and respect among the educators involved in the process—admissions officers, college counselors, athletic coaches—and the students (and their parents) applying. Taking advantage of that trust and crossing the line into unethical, let alone criminal, behavior is not so far-fetched, even though 99 percent of us respect the process and adhere to the rules associated with applying to college. How do you see the scandal changing the face of the college admissions process? What good do you think will come out of it? I think colleges, especially the ones that fell victim to the fraud and bribery, will be much more careful in keeping tight checks and balances on everything that goes in and out of their admission offices and athletic departments. I also think both colleges and high schools will have to be more transparent throughout the entire process, making sure to justify what’s being said about a candidate and

what’s seen as pertinent information used to make an admission decision. Hooks—legacy, development cases, athlete recruits, special interest minorities—are going to be looked at extra carefully to ensure ethical and legal decisions are being made in each case that receives special attention by admission offices. All of this will add to the challenge of getting in but will ultimately make things fairer in the long run for the majority of candidates. The scandal will show everyone that there are real consequences to breaking the rules in the world of college admissions. What advice do you have for students and parents who may be experiencing college admissions anxiety? Getting into college is challenging, but not impossible. Ultimately, I believe things work out for the best. Each year, I tell students, “You’ll get into college if it’s what you want.” I tell parents to “sit on their hands” and let their children take the lead on this task, while keeping the faith that their children know the importance of education, will take this process very seriously, and won’t screw it

up. Getting into a top college doesn’t require bribes, fraud, or breaking the law—no one has to go to jail to get an admission offer! What is the overarching philosophy of Webb’s four-year college guidance program? What is the focus of each year? The same philosophy any good school would adhere to: Fit and match are most important, not ranking or superficial prestige. Our program is designed to offer excellent advice and guidance on a very personal level to each of our students (and their parents) so that they’re well informed about the process, options, and opportunities to attend the country’s and world’s best colleges and universities. We work with them every step of the way, so they never have to feel lost. Each year, from the first day of school in ninth grade to the final May 1 deadline to commit to a college in twelfth grade, we take all of our students through a good process that will serve them well in making informed college decisions when it’s time to do so. Ninth and tenth graders (and their parents) are asked to focus

The Report of the Schools 2018-19

5

their attention on high school and enjoying their Webb experience, not obsessing over names of colleges. Eleventh and twelfth graders are more actively involved with college guidance because of SAT/ACT exams, college visits to Webb and the fastapproaching deadlines for admissions that await each of them. How did the college guidance program serve the Class of 2019? What are you most proud of when you reflect back on that class? The Class of 2019 is particularly special to me because my own son is a member of that proud class of Webbies! So, I got to experience the program not only as a dean but also as a parent. The class did exceptionally well, with the vast majority admitted to and attending some of America’s most elite institutions of higher learning. However, it wasn’t the acceptances to Harvard or MIT that made me most proud. What really impressed me was the genuine sense of caring and appreciation that the seniors showed toward one another as decisions were coming in. No matter the news— good (an admissions offer), bad (a rejection), or neutral (a wait list)— everyone was there to back each other up, offer a hug, and show each other

6

The Webb Schools

that being kind goes a long way. The Class of 2019 is a tight-knit group; I expect some great reunions from them in years to come! What sort of feedback have you received from Webb graduates who have recently transitioned to college? Nine times out of ten, the message is extremely positive. The most common feedback from our young alumni is “Webb prepared me well for college,” no matter how challenging and demanding the college. Our graduates know how to study, work hard, and balance their academic and social lives; don’t fear faculty members; aren’t shy about asking questions; and know that showing up is just the start. A Webb education pays off handsomely, in college and in life! Looking forward to the Class of 2023, what concerns may need to be addressed as part of the college guidance program? How will you accomplish this? Not only have we witnessed dramatic increases in selectivity among the most elite colleges and universities over the past few years, let alone the past 10 or 20 years, but the world is changing just as fast. Technology, majors that didn’t exist before,

and new discoveries in science, the humanities, and the arts are all factors that affect colleges and who they’re looking to enroll. The complexity of searching, getting to know, and applying to so many colleges requires great attention to detail. It used to be easy to apply to college, and it was usually done alone. Now, it feels like it takes a village to make sense of it all. I expect the next few years will continue to see an increase in selectivity, at least at the most elite schools, and it’s going to take more well-informed educational professionals to help students (and parents) navigate the process. The Class of 2023 will likely see additional staff added to Webb’s College Guidance team in order to offer the best and most personal guidance possible. How is the Office of College Guidance specially equipped to serve Webb students and families? What type of professional development do you and your team take part in? The College Guidance team comprises highly experienced college counselors and an outstanding executive assistant who know the world of selective college admissions inside and out. We care deeply about

GIVING “ WE VISIT DOZENS UPON DOZENS OF COLLEGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND OVERSEAS, SO WE KNOW WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON AT THESE SCHOOLS.” our students and their post-Webb education, ensuring every member of every graduating class is known and valued for his or her talents, merits, and potential, which we then happily convey to colleges. It’s the more than 40 years of combined experience in the field of college admissions that works in our favor, but it’s the talented student body of incredibly smart and articulate minds that merits the acceptances to so many great colleges year after year. We’re each members of numerous professional organizations, including the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools, the College Board, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the Western Association for College Admission Counseling, and the World Leading Schools Association, which help us stay on top of the latest trends and happenings in the world of college admissions. We serve on various boards, councils, and think tanks, often sharing our expertise as panelists and guest speakers at professional conferences. We visit dozens upon dozens of colleges across the country and overseas, so we know what’s really going on at these schools.

JOHN STEVENS ’52 With a single commitment, John Stevens ’52 has chosen to support both The Webb Schools and the Raymond M. Alf Museum in perpetuity. Through tax-advantaged giving from his individual retirement account (IRA), John has endowed funds for both important institutions on our campus. By creating an unrestricted endowment fund for The Webb Schools and another for the Alf Museum, John’s gift can be distributed wherever the need is greatest, allowing us to fulfill our mission for decades to come. Endowment gifts like John’s are invested to ensure our ability to thrive well into the future. While a student at Webb, John was an avid museum scholar and is featured in several photographs in the recently published Moment of Time: The Life of Raymond Alf and the History of the Peccary Society. He has continued his involvement in the museum as an alumnus by attending many alumni Peccary trips, including the first trip to Mongolia in 1995, and as a generous benefactor of the annual Peccary Society Dinner. Like Ray Alf before him, John was a star sprinter at Webb and still holds the schools’ record for the 200-meter dash. After graduating from the Webb School of California John attended Pomona College and the California Institute of Technology. He is a proud member of The Hastings Society at Webb as a dedicated donor for more than 20 consecutive years. He lives in New Hampshire with his daughter and grandchildren.

THE YEAR IN WEBB ADMISSION

ADMISSION Q. As you enter your fourth year at Webb, what has surprised you about how independent secondary admission work differs from college admission work? I think there’s a different set of expectations for students and parents. The process is a lot more personalized; you get to know families a lot better. As an admission director I feel a lot more invested in families and students and how they’re doing while they’re here, and how they’re adjusting to Webb. I feel there’s more connectedness.

DR. JAMILA EVERETT DIRECTOR OF ADMISSION & FINANCIAL AID

Q. Before joining Webb, you were the interim vice president of admission at Pitzer College. You’ve also worked at Caltech and USC. How did your career bring you to Webb? I’ve been in admission for almost 20 years. I started working in student affairs at USC. I didn’t know about admission at all, but I knew I liked working with students. I was going to go to law school and took a job in the student affairs department of the communication and journalism school at USC, the Annenberg School.

I fell in love with the excitement of talking with students about potential, and what they were excited about and how I could match a student with a particular program. I decided to stay in admission: I loved it, and it suited a lot of my talents. I worked as an assistant director at USC and then moved on to Caltech, working as an assistant and then associate director. At Caltech I traveled to boarding schools across the country – I think I visited about 65 boarding schools, so I became familiar with boarding school culture. I wanted to understand the educational landscape overall, so I studied and earned a doctorate in educational leadership at UC Los Angeles. I went on to Pitzer College as director of admissions and later as vice president, but I decided I wanted to work in a smaller environment. So for me, coming to Webb felt like a nice transition with my skillset to do admission work that I love, but in a more intimate environment. Q. Tell me about your admission team. Who is on it and what are their responsibilities? We’ve expanded our

IM PA C T

a team in the last three years, which is great. Our senior associate director of admission and financial aid, Jeff Stodgel, manages our financial aid program. We administered $5.6 million in financial aid last year, and he’s great in helping us realize our financial aid goals. He’s also doing a lot of work with community-based organizations. Did I mention he’s also Webb’s head baseball coach?

strategy and plan, building excitement around social media. Our new assistant director, Owen Wolf, has 14 years of college admission experience. He’s from Claremont – his dad is a faculty member at Pomona College. Owen knows Webb well and brings a lot of passion and energy for events and programming, thinking of cool new ways we can engage with families.

Our senior associate director of admission, David Martinsen, does wonderful work with our student ambassadors and admission fellows. The program gives students an opportunity to talk about Webb in their way, and it’s the No. 1 interaction families talk about when they visit campus. David has a boarding school background, as well, and has a great connection with our students.

And of course Amy Stoddard, who’s been here since 2009. She’s our executive assistant and runs our application programming, so anything to do with applying to Webb, our online application and processing applications and working with families. She’s had two children graduate from Webb, so she understands the parent’s perspective!

Sarah Garcia, our associate director, is also a product of boarding schools, and her brother graduated from Webb. She has a strong background in college admission and has transformed our communication

Q. What type of professional development keeps you and your team motivated? We do a lot; I think it’s important to keep that creative energy. Every staff member goes to the Enrollment Management

The Admission Team.

Association’s annual conference, which brings together 3,000 admission professionals who work in secondary independent schools from across the country and around the world to talk about trends and ideas. The staff members have their own special talents, too, and I encourage them to follow their interests. Q. Since joining Webb, you’ve worked to build partnerships with organizations nationwide. How does that benefit the school? When I joined, we had one partnership; this year we’ve expanded to 15. Creating diverse communities is a very intentional process, and one way we do that is to partner with access organizations across the country. These organizations work with talented students from underrepresented backgrounds, helping them navigate and prepare for independent schools. They also help identify a match between students and schools. Our partnerships help us get the message out that Webb is inclusive and excited to expand

diversity, but they also give us an opportunity to understand the needs of these students. The partnerships help us find students we wouldn’t normally find: the organizations are already working in the communities; they know the families and they can help connect us. Building relationships with them means they start to understand more about Webb and the students we’re looking for, and they can help us match students they feel would be great for us. Q. Can you tell me about the incoming class of 2023? We have 108 new students, from 81 different middle schools. There are six different states represented: California, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington. We have new students from 13 countries including Canada, Chile, Hungary, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. There’s lots of energy in this class; they’re very connected and engaged. They’re innovative and entrepreneurial, but also interested in sustainability and social justice. We also have a lot of great athletes, including a student who swims at the junior Olympic level and a

The Webb Schools

student who was a goalie for one of the top club soccer teams in China. It’s a class that’s ambitious, but they also don’t want to leave anyone behind. It’s a driven class, but also a compassionate, empathetic class. Q. As you are looking to build a class, what are the elements that go into that? It’s exciting – it’s what I love! It’s definitely more an art than a science. The students who apply to Webb are all smart and have lots of options for schools they could attend. For us it’s about creating the optimal class, and we consider so many factors. Besides academics, we look at students who can have a positive impact on the community, not just by their achievements but by who they are personally. We want to create a diverse groups of students, ethnically and geographically, politically and spiritually. There are all these elements and as we read applications we’re having discussions about kids, about how they’ll interact in the classroom, how they’ll add to the community, and if Webb would be a good fit for them. We also have a lot of conversations with the communitybased organizations. There’s a lot to balance!

Q. What exciting things are on the horizon for your Webb admission team? We’re starting a new series this year called Webb Coffee Conversations. We want parents to feel comfortable with us; we want them to be able to come to us with any question they have, so we’re hosting a series of coffee events in September. Parents can come, maybe without their child, to talk with us. We’ll invite faculty, too, to answer questions and talk about Webb informally. We’re also starting a weekly newsletter called Webb House Weekly to highlight things that are happening in the admission office. Looking ahead, I think the admission team is now in a position to do a lot more personalized work with families and develop new events like online webinars, our coffees and other ways to engage with the community. Our job is to find compelling, emotional, interesting ways to tell the Webb story. We need to get the message out in different ways because people process information differently. Every school has that challenge — it’s exciting!

GIVING GIVING WITH HONOR JOHN DUDEN ’81 AND THE CLASS OF 1981 In 2006, John Duden ’81 and Michael Turner ’81 established a class scholarship fund with the help of their classmates in honor of their 25th reunion. After years of generous contributions, the fund began distributions in 2014 with its inaugural Class of 1981 Scholar, Henry Dominguez-Letelier ’17. Henry received the award for three years, until his graduation and subsequent matriculation to Yale-NUS College in Singapore. Around the same time that Henry graduated from Webb, John detected some physical changes in his health. A battery of tests ensued for more than a year and the resulting diagnosis was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). With incredible humility and courage, John and his family thought not only of themselves but of others less fortunate who are living with ALS. John quickly became a champion to find a cure. He joined the Leadership Council of Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS, a nonprofit organization committed to changing the experience of thousands living with ALS by investing in cutting-edge research to advance effective treatment and an ultimate cure. His classmates joined with him and together they are facing the future with mutual admiration and determination. Michael also contacted Webb with a recommendation. He asked if the Class of 1981 Scholarship Fund could be renamed in honor of his classmate. “John is determined to live life to the fullest and remains engaged in positive action to assure his life is well spent,” he wrote in a letter to his classmates. “John exemplifies the specific traits he developed at Webb.” The class of 1981 agreed, and the fund was not only renamed, it also received additional contributions. In 2019, the John Duden Class of ’81 Scholarship Fund received leadership gifts from Michael Turner ’81, Jon Congdon ’81, Rick Warder ’81, George Sun ’81 and John Duden ’81 himself. Just as John is living his life with honor and moral courage and serving with a generous spirit, so too will future generations of Webb students, thanks in part to the financial aid made possible by this fund. Webb is deeply honored and grateful to award a scholarship in John’s name, especially because it exhibits the love and support that Webb alumni have for one another.

TRUSTEE DEVAL DVIVEDI ’00 AND WIFE SNIGDHA CREATE THE 21ST CENTURY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND AND SUPPORT THE WEBB FUND Webb trustee Deval Dvivedi ’00 and his wife Snigdha have made a generous $100,000 Centennial Campaign commitment to both create a new endowed fund to support financial aid at Webb and to support The Webb Fund at $10,000 a year for the next five years. In making this thoughtful gift, the Dvivedis expressed a desire to accomplish two goals simultaneously. They wished to help Webb students and faculty members achieve their goals today and over the next five years through The Webb Fund and to create a permanent fund that will provide opportunities to Webb students through financial aid, in perpetuity. In addition to his desire to provide resources now and into the future, Deval asked that as The Centennial Years unfold, Webb invite other alumni beginning with the Class of 2000 to consider supporting financial aid through The 21st Century Endowed Scholarship Fund, in addition to their own Webb Fund support. “I chose to name this permanent fund The 21st Century Endowed Fund at Webb to provide all alumni who have graduated in the 21st century a vehicle or means for them to support financial aid at Webb. I feel strongly that those of us who have graduated in the past 20 years feel a deep passion for Webb and for the world that Webb students will lead, and we have an opportunity and a responsibility to demonstrate that support. I hope others will join Snigdha and me in the years ahead!”

ongolia students with (l-r) Dr. Bolor Minjin (director of the ]M

ISMD), Undra Tumen (teacher from Bulgan School), Billie Guerrero (paleontology teacher for Webb Summer Program) and Gabe Santos (collections manager/director of outreach).

MONGOLIA: COLLABORATIVE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROJECT This summer the Alf Museum initiated a collaborative education and research project involving middle school students in Mongolia and Webb students in our Advanced Studies in Paleontology (ASIP) course. Both sets of students did or will work on Mongolian vertebrate fossils collected by Malcolm McKenna ’48 from the Gobi Desert in the 1990s—specimens now housed at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

A

s a first step, Mongolian paleontologist Dr. Bolor Minjin (founder of the Institute for the Study of Mongolian Dinosaurs or ISMD) arrived at Webb with a teacher (Undra Tumen) and four middle school students from the Bulgan School in the Gobi Desert. The two scientists and educators were here to support the Mongolian students who attended the second session of the Webb Junior Scholars Summer Program in Paleontology. The Mongolian students (two boys, two girls) had never been outside Mongolia and had a transforming educational experience while at Webb. In addition to learning about paleontology, they interacted with other students in the summer program and even went on a field trip to the beach. They had never seen the ocean before. One student called The Webb Schools “the perfect high school.” They really enjoyed their time here.

While attending the summer program, Mongolian students briefly studied about 60 specimens of mammalian carnivores from the Gobi Desert borrowed from the AMNH. These specimens will be studied by Webb students in ASIP this coming year, and they will share images and 3D scans of these fossils with the Mongolian students so they can continue their study of paleontology from afar.

IN OTHER EXCITING NEWS As part of this collaboration, Gabe Santos traveled to Mongolia in summer 2018 (and again in 2019) to work with Dr. Minjin on Gobi Desert outreach using a motor home equipped with exhibits and hands-on fossils to educate the people of the Gobi of their fossil heritage and to inspire the next generation of Mongolian paleontologists. The plan is for the ISMD to eventually build a paleontology museum at the Flaming Cliffs site in the Gobi Desert (Bulgan is a few miles from this site). The Flaming Cliffs is the most famous dinosaur site in the world, because the first dinosaur eggs were identified from there in the 1920s. As an aside, the Alf Museum is offering a peccary trip to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia for

Webb alumni in July 2020 (our fifth trip to the Gobi). We will visit our new friends in Bulgan and also go to the Flaming Cliffs. In total, the visit by the Mongolian students was a great success, part of our unique collaboration with the AMNH and ISMD, with the goal to: • Educate Gobi residents about paleontology and preserving their fossil resources, • Inspire the next generation of Mongolian paleontologists, • A id in establishment of a museum at the Flaming Cliffs, and • P rovide a unique research experience for Webb students in collaboration with Mongolian students.

$3 MILLION ENDOWMENT DRIVE MAKING MAJOR PROGRESS: Life Trustee Doug Myles announced a planned endowment gift last fall of $1.3 million, which inspired additional endowment pledges totaling $150,000. The museum’s endowment campaign total is now $2,750,000, close to the $3 million strategic goal set in 2013. MOMENT OF TIME: THE LIFE OF RAYMOND ALF & THE HISTORY OF THE PECCARY SOCIETY: The first comprehensive book on the life of Ray Alf and the Peccary Society was printed in March (the cost of which was underwritten by trustees, alumni & others). Over 700 copies have been distributed thus far, starting with a book signing event at the museum. Feedback on the book has been overwhelmingly positive. Besides recording the life of Ray Alf, the book raises awareness of the museum’s early history and great legacy. 2020 MONGOLIA PECCARY TRIP: Webb will visit Mongolia for a fifth time in July 2020 (earlier trips were 1995, 2006, 2008, 2014) via a custom itinerary developed by Nomadic Expeditions for Webb. The trip includes visits to cultural areas in the capital (Ulaanbaatar), with the rest spent exploring the Gobi Desert. Participants will see the Flaming Cliffs, where the world’s first dinosaur eggs were reported, the 600-foot-high sand dunes at Hongoryn Els, and the petroglypths at Havsgait. This is a true adventure expedition to a remote part of the world.

GIVING DAVID FLEISHHACKER ’55 2019 SUMMER TRIPS: The last Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument (Utah) expedition was in mid-June, when museum staff led by Dr. Farke finished excavating the Cripe Site (which has yielded an amazing array of dinosaurs, pterosaurs and turtles since it was found by Jeff Cripe ’08 in 2005; Cripe joined the excavation crew for this last trip). The 2019 Summer Peccary Trip was July 20-August 3 and had 17 students who were led by Dr. Farke, the museum’s Augustyn Family Curator of Paleontology. The group explored new collecting areas in Wyoming, and then worked the Pipestone Springs site in Montana with Museum Director Dr. Don Lofgren. Eight students remained in Montana with Lofgren for an additional week of collecting in support of student research projects. STUDENT AND STAFF RESEARCH: Student coauthored papers published recently include: “A juvenile cf. Edmontosaurus annectens (Ornithischia, Hadrosauridae) femur documents a previously unreported intermediate growth stage for this taxon,” Journal of Vertebrate Anatomy Morphology Paleontology 6:59-67, by Andrew Farke and Eunice Yip ’19. This paper represents the culmination of a collaboration between Dr. Farke and Eunice Yip ’19 (as part of her Advanced Studies in Paleontology course), where they described the thigh bone of a juvenile plant-eating dinosaur called Edmontosaurus, filling the gap in scientific knowledge about how this dinosaur grew up. “Paleoecology of the Slug Bed and other molluskbearing sites from the Barstow Formation,” in the 2019 Desert Symposium Field Guide and Proceedings (CSU-Fullerton), p. 154-160. By Don Lofgren, April Bi ’18, Drake Gardner ’18, Kelli Henry ’18, Peter Raus ’18, Madalyn Stoddard ’18, and Kia Nalbandi ’18. This paper is a review of the paleoecology of fossil snail sites in the Barstow Formation, an area the museum has visited since 1936.

The David Fleishhacker ’55 Research Award was established in 2019 and will be used to offset the cost of registration, travel, and lodging for Peccary Scholars who wish to present and publish their original research at professional conferences such as the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP). This opportunity is offered to every Peccary Scholar doing advanced research in their senior year. Nine students qualified in 2018 and five students attended the SVP meeting in Albuquerque, NM, where four of them presented their research results. The roots of student research programs at Webb came from humble beginnings, using external sources such as the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. As demand increased for such opportunities, it became incumbent on Webb to seek a permanent revenue stream. A former participant in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search, David Fleishhacker ’55 competed alongside the nation’s leading young scientists as a Webb student and then traveled to Washington D.C., where he met President Dwight Eisenhower at the White House. He presented his paleontological project titled, “Evolution of Oreodonts in Three Ways.” In an effort to pay forward the opportunity given to him, David recently agreed to endow a fund at the Alf Museum to provide current and future Webb students the opportunity to conduct professional research and present it on the international stage. His $100,000 pledge, paid through IRA charitable rollover gifts, a growing trend in philanthropy at Webb, will continue a decades-long tradition of our commitment to student research in the field of paleontology.

FACULTY LEARNING :

MENTORS AND ROLE MODELS

The most valuable resource in any organization is the people who work within it; at Webb, that means our dedicated faculty—the teachers and staff who are there for students 24/7. Investing in that resource yields an academically enriching environment, and so, Webb faculty are encouraged and supported in their efforts to continue learning and exploring new educational pedagogies. We also recognize the hard work and dedication of our teachers through annual awards which offer a stipend to help further scholarship and stay on-top-of new topics and learning methods.

FACULTY ENRICHMENT In addition to the activities associated with awards, a number of faculty members pursued additional professional growth opportunities. By providing faculty members with the resources to further their learning, Webb enables them to continue their own education, gain vital skills, and stay current with new techniques. The conferences and programs that Webb faculty attend ensure that they will continue to strengthen their practice throughout their careers. Jim Dahler joined the GeoGebra Conference to increase his knowledge of the free GeoGebra apps he has been using in his class for years. GeoGebra

Among other things, he learned that a new “augmented reality” app allows a person to insert any mathematical figure into a real-world setting. “I will be using the 3D app extensively in my Advanced Studies Linear Algebra class,” he said. “Being able to visualize 3D geometry is essential in order to understand how we can prove that the same concepts will apply in higher dimensions. Exploring the relationship between algebra and geometry is the main advantage of using GeoGebra.”

WEBB FACULTY ARE ENCOURAGED AND SUPPORTED IN THEIR EFFORTS TO CONTINUE LEARNING AND EXPLORING NEW EDUCATIONAL PEDAGOGIES. World language teacher Sonsoles Cardalliaguet experienced an intensive French language course through the Full Immersion French Program at Lingua International in Quebec. The four-hour-a-day program inspired Cardalliaguet to consider bringing her students to Quebec next summer where they can live with local families and attend classes daily. Kevin Riel, Ph.D., humanities teacher, participated in The Institute for Writing and Thinking at Bard College. The program advocates for guided writing exercises as a way to help students and scholars clarify and deepen their thinking. Riel said the program made him feel like he was back in graduate school. “I learned multiple techniques that help one to interrogate their thinking and habits of mind. The workshop comprehensively changed my teaching practices, and I am happy to report that, so far, I have begun each of my classes with a guided writing prompt – and students seem to be enjoying it,” he said.

Humanities Department Chair Greg Gerken attended the Environmental Literature Institute held at Philips Exeter Academy in June. The program places an emphasis on environmentally focused teaching and learning. “Not only did it provide a plethora of resources and ideas, but it was great to connect with a larger network of educators who are concerned about the environment and seeking to find ways to engage students in the larger discussions on climate,” said Gerken. “My hope is to not only share the information, ideas and experience with my colleagues at Webb, but to integrate many of the readings and ideas about investigating ’place’ in my Literature and Leadership in the Wilderness class to empower students to think more deeply about the Californian environment around us.” Dean of Students Sarah Lantz continued her studies at Claremont Graduate University, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on higher education and student affairs. GIVING THIS YEAR’S PERRY AWARD WINNERS WERE: classes included LGBTQ+ Students in Education and The Economics and Finance of Higher Education. “These topics are pertinent to the work I do every day at Webb. I am learning so much about personal identity development and the goals of a student affairs professional. The LGBTQ+ class was extremely helpful in learning new vocabulary and best practices for an inclusive, supportive campus climate,” she said. Wendy Maxon, a humanities teacher, already holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. but continued her education through an M.F.A. program at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to her course work she is working on a novel and preparing a graduate research thesis on concepts of the split self in modern Japanese literature. Maxon regularly takes one or two writing classes each school break, including this past summer, when she took an online class on how to write stories using “found footage,” a film subgenre in which all or a substantial part of the work is presented as if it were discovered film or video recordings. “I tried my hand at crafting a story by combining documents such as police reports, recorded customer service calls, film footage, and county death records. I’m still working on the story but find it extremely fun to put together. It’s the sort of thing I like to teach students how to do when analyzing history using disparate documents, so it fits into my wheelhouse,” she explained. Michael Kozden, a 16-year veteran of Webb’s world languages department, was awarded the 2018 Jacques and Mimi Pauwels Award. This award was established by the Pauwels children to celebrate the long tenure of their father as a French teacher and the tremendous contribution he and their mother made to the study of language and culture at Webb. Kozden, whose leadership has helped to bring a Chinese language program to Webb as well as host cultural immersion trips to China, Korea and Japan, used funds from his award to take online language courses over the summer.

Greg Gerken is a servant leader, a master teacher and a warm and welcoming presence on our campus. Greg’s Literature and Leadership in the Wilderness course has changed the lives of many students lucky enough to enroll it. So, too, has his coaching on the soccer field, his mentoring and his devotion to Webb’s community. Wendy Maxon is among the most intellectually adventurous teachers on our campus—no small feat considering the quality and extraordinary expertise of our faculty. Among many highlights, she has worked incredibly hard developing new humanities electives like East Asian Culture and Conflict and characteristically offbeat Unbounded Days courses like Notes from the Cultural Underground. She models unbounded thinking and learning to students and faculty alike. Cindy Jeantete is a leader among leaders—among those who know it takes a village to run a boarding school. She cares for students with a warmth and generosity that knows no bounds. She understands the value of community and strives to create for our students a home away from home. Cindy models service, compassion and leadership. The Perry Awards were established and endowed by generous donors in 1995 to honor the life and work of former faculty Les and Barbara Perry.

AT COMMENCEMENT, THE FOLLOWING TEACHING PRIZES WERE ANNOUNCED: DEMETRIADES PRIZE FOR UNBOUNDED THINKING Elle Brosh, Humanities “My first year of teaching at Webb felt like a whirlwind,” said Brosh. The stipend she received as part of her award went towards a week-long session at the Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking, entitled “Creative Nonfiction: Telling the Truth.” According to Brosh, “Bard practices the pedagogical philosophy of ’writing as thinking.’ I learned a variety of activities that are meant to encourage students to engage with a text more thoroughly and in a student-centered manner. These exercises are helpful before discussions and also teach a variety of skills like identifying an argument or analysis.” She is already incorporating new activities such as photograph analysis, erasure poetry, and loop writing into her classes, using these exercises as “entryways into larger group discussions.” Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale described Brosh’s work ethic: “Elle is never not thinking about teaching. She works tirelessly refining her lessons, brainstorming project ideas and reading well into the night to find the best materials to bring to her students each day.” The James T. Demetriades Prize for Unbounded Thinking was established and endowed by James T. Demetriades ’80.

LAURENCE MCMILLIN EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD Howie Kalter, Mathematics Upon presenting Kalter’s award, Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale cited Kalter’s great love of the outdoors: “Above all else is his delight and deep commitment to teaching us all – students and faculty alike – how to responsibly and respectfully learn from the wilderness.” Kalter spent a good part of his summer learning about math as he pursues an Master of Science in Computational and Applied Mathematics degree at Claremont Graduate University. “One thing that I will be able to incorporate into my work at Webb is what I learned from being a student again. Sitting on the other side of the room really made me remember what it is like to be a student in a math classroom and will hopefully help me to better connect and empathize with the students I teach,” he said. The Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by David Loo ’79.

JEAN E. MILLER EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD Kevin Quick, Science Quick was honored for his work helping to develop exceptional core and elective classes like Evolutionary Biology and Advanced Studies in Anatomy and Physiology. It was also noted that he helms the badminton program, is a fixture on Peccary trips, and a beloved dorm head. “He knows that teaching is an act of service and devotes himself to his students and our school,” said Stockdale. Quick plans on using his award to attend the OESIS conference in Boston as a Network Leader – the groups’ mission is to catalyze change in the learning models of schools with an emphasis on the innovative practices in pedagogy, curriculum development, 21st-century assessment and school culture change. He will also be using some of the award to attend STEAM conferences which provide practical strategies and new ideas, classroom resources and curriculum, networking and inspiration to help teachers invigorate their practices. The Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by the Affiliates of The Webb Schools.

THOMPSON AND VIVIAN WEBB AWARD Andrew Neyer, Mathematics Neyer said it was an honor to receive the award and plans to use his stipend for future study. This past summer, he attended the Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics and Technology held on the campus of Phillips Exeter. The main focus of his time at the conference was learning how to use hands-on activities and technology to enhance his teaching. “We are always working to improve the way we teach math and problem solving and this course gave me lots of new ideas that I can bring to my classes this year.” He also took a “crash course” on Python, a powerful programming language. Neyer will be mathematics department chair this year and said he looks forward to continuing to improve the way “we teach math and problem solving here at Webb.” This award was endowed by Edmund L. GIVING SUN FAMILY FUND FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS In June 2019, LiangLiang Sun ’06 established The Sun Family Fund for the Performing Arts, an endowed fund that will provide annual contributions to the performing arts programs at The Webb Schools in perpetuity. A dedicated Chamber Singer while a student at Vivian Webb School, LiangLiang wanted to ensure a lasting legacy that will aid the program for years to come. LiangLiang’s brother is an accomplished cellist, and the fund will also support the orchestra. Endowed funds like the one created by LiangLiang and her family have an enduring impact on Webb’s ability to fulfill its mission, to prepare students for the creative and critical thinking that is needed in our complex global society. This specific fund will afford the performing arts department the chance to expand its reach and take advantage of new opportunities such as inviting visiting soloists, provide travel to concerts and more for our Webb singers and musicians. LiangLiang and her husband Jason Zhang live in Arcadia, where she serves as the president and CEO of Sun Homeland, a real estate development company. After graduating from Vivian Webb School in 2006, she attended Claremont McKenna College where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, and then went on to complete her master’s degree in real estate development at USC.

GIVING ANABI & STEWART FAMILIES Athletics are an important part of the school culture at Webb. Every student is required to play at least one sport per year. Some are seasoned athletes and others are novices. Student-athletes in all skill levels comprise 42 teams participating in 15 sports. Last year, the Webb baseball team was crowned undefeated league champions. This was the team’s ninth league championship overall and third under head coach Jeff Stodgel. Sam and Rene Anabi P ’16, ’17, ’22 of Anabi Oil capped off the Gauls’ championship season with a donation of $36,500 for a custom-made, state-of-the-art scoreboard for the baseball field. Built by Daktronics, the manufacturer of scoreboards for the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros, the new scoreboard features LED lighting and a custom clock. Installed in July 2019 and customized by Outdoor Dimensions, the scoreboard will anchor the baseball field’s top-notch playing surface for many exciting seasons to come. Sam and Rene’s children have also contributed to the baseball program. Their son Christian ’16 is a baseball team alumnus, and daughter Emily ’17 served as team manager. Their son Dillon Anabi ’22 is currently a sophomore at Webb, and niece Eva ’23 is a member of the Vivian Webb freshman class. The scoreboard’s electrical rigging was provided by the Stewart family, of Interior Electric. Spencer Stewart ’17 played for the Webb baseball team, and sibling Sydney ’16 is a VWS softball alumna while Chloe ’20 is scheduled to graduate in June. Webb is grateful to the Anabi and Stewart families for their generous support of Webb’s athletics program.

GIFTS OF A LIFETIME

THE THOMPSON AND VIVIAN WEBB SOCIETY Education is a legacy, and for so many generations of alumni and their families, Webb is a dynamic part of their legacy. Throughout the years, legions of committed alumni, parents, trustees, and friends have supported Webb to advance its mission and provide for its future. Planned gifts, such as bequests or charitable trusts, can be an advantageous way to provide for a future gift to a non-profit organization like The Webb Schools. The Thompson and Vivian Webb Society honors an extraordinary group of alumni, parents and friends who have made Webb a beneficiary of a will or trust, life income gift, IRA or other retirement plan, or planned gift. This year we feature the gifts of two out of thirteen extraordinary individuals who will help ensure that The Webb Schools will continue to transform lives long into the future.

DAVID WOODLEY P ’98

Dr. David Woodley has been a consistent donor to The Webb Schools for more than twenty years. As the parent of a Webb graduate, he has seen first-hand the transformative impact of a Webb education. And he and his son Thatcher ’98 have both dedicated their professional lives to education, working for a combined five decades in secondary and higher education institutions. Beyond supporting the daily operations of The Webb Schools on an annual basis, Dr. Woodley has also chosen to document a generous planned gift through his estate. Bequest gifts made through a declaration in your will or living trust are an excellent way to demonstrate your support of Webb’s mission and help us to secure our future.

By documenting his intentions now, we can celebrate Dr. Woodley today for the impact that he will have in many years to come. Dr. Woodley is Emeritus Founding Chair of the USC Department of Dermatology and lives in Altadena, California.

TAMMY ZIPSER P ’94, ’96

In 2015, Tamara “Tammy” Zipser joined the board of the Alf Museum. Tammy and her late husband Robert “Bob” Zipser had been fans of the museum ever since their children attended The Webb Schools. Dana Zipser Schallheim ’94 and Brian Zipser ’96 made the most of their time at Webb. The connection between Museum Director Dr. Don Lofgren and the

Zipsers remains quite strong. “The Zipser family has a 30-year association with the Alf Museum, starting with the involvement of Brian ’96 in peccary trips, museum classes, and afterschool fossil preparation,” reports Dr. Lofgren. “As strong supporters of the museum through my entire Webb career, the Zipsers are steadfast attendees of Peccary Society dinners too, both of which I greatly appreciate.” “Bob loved the annual Peccary Society dinners,” Tammy recalls. “He always looked forward to the lectures.” As Tammy learned more about the museum and its commitment to complete a $3 million endowment campaign, she decided to make a gift that would forever combine the legacies of her family and the Alf Museum.

museum can continue to get annual gifts in this manner and receive any remainder as a bequest. It is a thoughtful strategy that will also provide Dana ’94 and Brian ’96 a possible designation for their current and/or future giving. Tammy and her late husband Bob are among the most recent members of The Thompson and Vivian Webb Society. Tammy’s leadership as an ongoing donor and a museum trustee serves as an example to other alumni parents that the bond between Webb and its family members lasts a lifetime.

In 2019, Tammy named the Alf Museum a charitable beneficiary of an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) valued at approximately $275,000. The gift was strategic because Tammy was already using the IRA charitable rollover provision approved by Congress to make her annual gifts. The

Sophomore Career Evening 2019 Alumni returned to campus on February 10 to speak at the 20th Annual Sophomore Career Evening, hosted by the Alumni Council. Alumni shared their experiences with students, leading discussions about the field of medicine, how to follow

your passion, careers in academia and education, the film and entertainment industry, and how to be an innovator in your industry. While each session had its own focus, alumni shared with students just how influential their Webb experience was to their future and the importance of networking.

NETWORKING EVENTS In early 2019, a number of on-campus events gave students and parents an opportunity to engage with young alumni. These included the Affiliates meeting, a Health and Wellness session for seniors, a College Athletes Roundtable, and the Networking Essentials session. At each of these events, alumni shared their personal experiences at college, including managing academics and being away from home, maintaining a healthy mind and body, and balancing time management skills. a

Innovator’s Edge at Techstars In May, The Webb Schools hosted its first-ever Innovator’s Edge event at the Techstars office in Los Angeles, California. The evening was an opportunity for students, educators and alumni in the field to connect with leaders and visionaries who have continued to thrive in the increasingly complex technology industry. The panelists included Sameer Dholakia ’91, CEO of SendGrid, Samantha Ainsley ’07, senior software engineer and technical lead at Google, Jeff Cripe ’08, CEO and founder of Cargo, Colin Carrier, co-founder and CEO of Stealth, Ex-CSO at Twitch and Elie Seidman, CEO of Tinder. Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the conversation and their collective expertise made for a robust and meaningful discussion. While each panelist had specific methodologies and keys to success, it was very clear that company culture and ethics have been central to their accomplishments. VWS Roundtable with Dr. Ann Longley On May 30, a small gathering of VWS faculty and alumnae gathered for dinner and a roundtable discussion about the early years of the school with founding headmistress Dr. Ann

COMMENCEMENT VWS Commencement Founding Headmistress of Vivian Webb School Dr. Ann Longley addressed the VWS Class of 2019. Longley encouraged the graduates to make their mark on the world. “Be confident, be self-assured, think creatively, believe in yourselves. While we cannot entirely control the future, be aware of your role and responsibility in shaping it. The future is yours. Dare to reach out and seize it.”

WSC Commencement Dr. Bob Connolly ’89 addressed the 2019 Webb School of California graduates. When Connolly came to campus with his family in 1982, he forged a lifelong relationship with the schools. As the son of two Webb math teachers, Connolly recalls disapproving of his parents’ decision to move on campus but quickly realized that it was an incredible opportunity. He is forever grateful for the bonds he formed with fellow students and faculty at Webb and encouraged the graduates to cherish their high school experience. a 1 2 3 4

Andrea and Blake Brown ’68, recently made a three-year, $1,000,000 commitment to Webb and purposely structured their commitment to help Webb accomplish several important goals in the critical period leading up to Webb’s Centennial. Their generous commitment will be used to support The Webb Fund at $10,000 each year and to provide $300,000 per year to capital, endowment or programming needs to be determined by the Browns and Webb. The remaining $70,000 will fund a unique and specific opportunity that arises during the gift period and will be determined by the Browns and Webb. In devising this approach, the Browns wished to “…provide a three-year commitment to The Webb Fund to help build this critical gift stream that is used in planning annual budgets…and also to provide significant funding to aid in the large priorities and opportunities that will be accomplished in The Centennial.” In addition, according to Blake, “We wanted to reserve the balance of this commitment so that Webb could respond to a unique opportunity that would further advance Webb in a way that will present itself, not necessarily today but in the next few years. Our investment is to support and celebrate Webb’s future and we hope many others will join with us.” The Browns’ creative gift arrangement provides the Webb community with significant opportunities and flexibility over the next three years. As the world of education evolves at an ever-faster pace, this is a particularly thoughtful gift as Webb approaches its Centennial in 2022 and prepares for its second century, this gift is a generous example of the Browns’ leadership.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

It is our great pleasure to bring you the third annual Report of the Schools, a comprehensive means to share the record of the past year at Webb and importantly, the generosity that made these results possible. By design, this publication is not just about the generous gifts that Webb received in the past year, although we recognize and honor those gifts and those who chose to make them. The purpose of this publication is to show the connection between those donors and their gifts and what they are making possible at Webb.

GIVING

Philanthropy means different things to different people, but in the end, each gift is not just about its dollar amount; it is about providing opportunity. That opportunity may mean that a deserving and motivated student can attend Webb because of financial aid, or it may mean that a member of the Webb faculty can bring a new teaching methodology to the classroom sparking a new learning experience for a motivated and excited class. Or it may mean that Webb can restore and refresh an essential campus landmark, as we are doing this year with the Hooper Community Center. Thanks to Webb’s alumni, families and friends, in 2018-19 Webb enjoyed the second-best philanthropic year in the past decade and this followed the best philanthropic year in Webb’s history. This is wonderful momentum as Webb approaches The Centennial and that moment when we will honor Webb’s first century, celebrate Webb today and together envision and build Webb’s second century. Philanthropic support is a key foundation for the future and all of us at Webb are grateful for the support that so many gave in the year that concluded on June 30, 2019.

As Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale often says, Webb is a partnership. Alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff together form a partnership to honor Webb’s mission and values that are now 97 years old and, equally, ensure that Webb remains an educational leader today and in the future in all aspects of secondary education. Above all, this partnership serves our students each day as they develop and grow to embrace the world. On behalf of Webb’s Advancement Office, thank you to every member of the Webb community who chose to make a gift last year or who provided volunteer time and service. We are deeply grateful to you. As we approach The Centennial, our team stands ready to work closely with you in the year ahead as you contemplate making your mark on Webb and the Alf Museum. Respectfully submitted,

GIVING

LEGACY HALL OF FAME We wish to give special recognition to the following donors who have made lifetime gifts of $1 million and greater. Their philanthropy has transformed our campus and impacted the lives of generations of students.

$5 MILLION OR MORE Blake ’68 and Andrea Brown Blake Brown and his wife Andrea have helped to transform our campus and educational programs. Their gifts have helped bring the Alf Museum into the modern age with significant support for the Hall of Life campaign, a research laboratory and fossil prep laboratory. They have also supported the renovation of a NextGen science lab allowing for the highest level of research, the construction of new faculty housing and a major renovation of Hooper Student Center in addition to the land acquisition adjacent to campus.

James D. ’42 & Lin Burke Few people or events have had the powerful impact that Jim and Lin Burke have had on Webb. The Burkes’ leadership gift to Webb came in the form of a family cabin on a lake. The cabin and surrounding property were sold for over $6 million, making the Burkes’ gift the largest in Webb’s history. With the proceeds of that sale, Webb built the Copeland Donahue Theater in 2008, the first new construction of an academic building since 1987. In addition to the theater, Jim and Lin’s gift will continue a family legacy of giving back by providing financial aid to deserving students.

Col. John S. Rogers USAF (Ret.) ’59 and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation During the past two decades, Col. John and June Rogers and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation have transformed the lives of Webb students. Through the Mary Stuart Rogers Endowed Scholarship and the Raymond M. Alf Peccary Society Chair, more than 249 students have received financial aid and the opportunity of a Webb education. In addition to his dedication to growing the schools’ endowment, Col. Rogers has supported capital projects such as the Mary Stuart Rogers Sports Center and Faculty Field, and provided support for the acquisition of land adjacent to the campus.

The Ahmanson Foundation

Mr. Liu and Mrs. Cheung, parents of Ken Liu ’10, made the lead gift towards the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center. They have also generously supported major dorm renovations including the historic Alamo renovation in 2009 and a significant remodel of the chemistry lab in 2016.

A preeminent Southern California institution, The Ahmanson Foundation has partnered with Webb in many of the schools’ finest achievements, from yearly support of deserving students through its Pre-Collegiate Scholarship Program, to funding for a faculty endowment fund, Webb’s technology infrastructure and the Ahmanson Lecture Hall, and the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center.

Robert A. Hefner III ’53 Robert Hefner’s gifts have been focused on supporting faculty and unbounded thinking, and in 1998 he established The Raymond M. Alf Inspirational and Unbounded Teaching Chair in Science. This endowed fund ensures the schools’ ability to attract and retain a teacher of Raymond Alf’s caliber. He also established an endowed fund for Excellence in Science and endowed the Unbounded Thinkers Symposium with the goal of inspiring Webb students to explore new opportunities.

Avery McCarthy ’52 Avery McCarthy’s gifts to Webb have revolved around enhancing technology in the library, funding new technology in classrooms, and funding the Barbara Mott McCarthy Aquatic Center. In addition to the McCarthy Collaborative Learning Lab established in 2000, Avery helped to fund new software programs and licenses for computer labs and dormitories.

Estate of David J. ’37 and Virginia E. Pinkham In 2000, Webb received over $4 million from a charitable trust set up by David (1919-1998) and Virginia Pinkham. Their gift was used in part for construction projects, faculty development, and programs that will help the schools continue to promote the character of its students.

Gretchen Augustyn P ’89 & Family A former Webb trustee and current Alf Museum trustee, Gretchen Augustyn and her family endowed the salary of the curator at The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology and also created a fund to support the curator’s research work with students and the scientific community.

John M. Bryan ’43 During his lifetime, John Bryan’s contributions have touched several areas of The Webb Schools ranging from scholarship endowment and The Webb Fund, to the campus master plan and capital improvements such as the student quad area.

The Crean Foundation In 2007, the Crean Foundation established a scholarship to support financial aid for deserving students. The Crean Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund was made possible by the Crean family, and in part by parent and Crean Foundation board member Susan Thomas P ’05, ’09.

James E. Drasdo ’63 James Drasdo has supported Webb in a variety of ways, including unrestricted gifts to The Webb Fund, gifts to capital projects, and gifts to the endowment. He chaired Webb’s Building Character campaign which raised over $22 million. He has made leadership gifts to help establish the Les and Barbara Perry Faculty Enrichment Fund, to support a class scholarship fund, to dedicate the performing arts center, and to fund a major technology initiative.

The Fawcett Family David Fawcett arrived at Webb in the fall of 1958, and the generosity of his family, especially his parents, W. Russell Fawcett and Priscilla Damon Fawcett, has been felt faithfully on campus every year since. Among the family’s larger gifts are Webb’s stately, octagonal W. Russell Fawcett Memorial Library and a bequest to complete renovations to the Jameson Dormitory. Dave was a member

of the Webb faculty for 34 years and, along with his wife, math teacher Diane Wilsdon, has quietly and thoughtfully enriched the lives of thousands of Webb students through his wisdom and support. The David D. Fawcett and Diane C. Wilsdon Scholarship Fund honors their legacy.

Charline E. & Michael T. Gallagher P ’07, ’09 Michael and Charline Gallagher were instrumental in supporting Webb’s campus master plan. Their gifts supported the Kirkhill Dorm renovation, the campus turnaround and the reconstruction of the student quad area. The Gallaghers, parents of Candace ’07 and Michael ’09, focused their support on improving the living spaces on campus in an effort to provide the best living environment possible for all Webb students.

Victor E. Heerman ’42 Victor Heerman was a boy of Hollywood. In fact, his parents were Hollywood legends, having won an Academy Award in 1933 for co-writing the screenplay adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women. At Webb, Vic was an equestrian, both as a sport and a hobby. He kept a horse on campus and followed all of the races in the news. Following Webb, he served three years in the Army during WWII and graduated from Williams College with Dean’s List honors. Eventually, he struck out on his own, forming the Heerman Bloodstock Agency, and became one of the most successful breeders of thoroughbred racehorses in the country. His clients included classmate George Getty ’4 2. Vic and his wife of 59 years, Lucille, left the majority of their estate to Webb to support the faculty.

Clifford S. Heinz Jr. ’37 and the C.S. Heinz Foundation

competition are important elements in a student’s development, Pak Fu King made a generous lead gift to the renovation of the Les Perry Gymnasium, the daily home to many of Webb’s athletic activities. In addition to this capital gift, King also made a generous gift to support the renovation of The Frederick R. Hooper Student Center. These gifts will help ensure that Webb’s facilities will support Webb’s mission for decades to come.

Estate of Dwight W. Taylor ’49 Even as a young boy, Dwight Taylor had a passion for geology and collecting interesting specimens, especially shells. His curiosity was nurtured at Webb by his teachers and his mentor and friend Ray Alf. In his senior year, Dwight placed first in the national Westinghouse Science Talent Search. With this good start, he forged a distinguished career in the sciences, including time with the U.S. Geological Survey in the Paleontology and Stratigraphy Branch. Throughout his lifetime and finally using his estate, Dwight Taylor has supported the schools and the Alf Museum, with gifts totaling $1 million.

Charles E. Scripps ’37 Scion of the legendary media company and board chairman of the E.W. Scripps Company for more than four decades, Charles Scripps was also a proud and stalwart supporter of Webb. He was a founding trustee and returned to the board in the 1980s. His munificent gifts throughout the years have provided support where needed most; perhaps none was more important than his $1 million gift to the 1990s Building Character campaign, which helped steer Webb into the 21st century.

Yafei Yuan P ’16, ’20

In 1997, the Clifford S. Heinz ’37 Ethical Education Program was established to augment the work of Webb’s student-run honor committees, its curriculum and athletic programs. In 2000 and 2001, Cliff Heinz challenged the Webb community and matched dollar for dollar gifts made to The Webb Fund in support of character development and ethical education. Gifts from Cliff and the C.S. Heinz Foundation have been directed to many areas of the schools, including The Raymond M. Alf Museum, faculty housing, endowment, and The Webb Fund.

Yafei Yuan is a man of many talents and ambitions and a great supporter of excellence in education in China and the United States. He is the founder and chairman of Sanpower Group Co., Ltd., headquartered in Nanjing, China. His daughter Donna ’16 is an alumnae and Doris ’20 is a student at Vivian Webb School. Keenly interested in supporting the strategic vision of Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale, particularly his goal of providing quality housing for all faculty, Mr. Yuan contributed $1 million to assist in the construction of four new faculty homes.

ENDOWED FUNDS As funds held in perpetuity, endowments generate the funds for scholarships, educational programs, athletics, faculty enrichment, and many other areas critical to the success of the schools. A generous endowment gives an institution confidence that it can remain true to its mission regardless of a challenging economy. The board of trustees currently uses a 4.0% payout rate. All funds above this amount are reinvested for continued growth as a hedge against inflation. Endowed funds are managed by Goldman Sachs & Co., a global leader in investment research, strategy, and management. We are forever grateful to the individuals and families listed below whose generosity secures the future of The Webb Schools. 2018 REUNION GIVING CAMPAIGN REUNION HIGHLIGHTS A steady rain did not dampen spirits or any of the fun during the 2018 Reunion. As the Friday night Peccary Dinner shifted to Ahmanson Lecture Hall and the Saturday Night Alumni Reception and Dinner shifted to Price Dining Hall, many felt that the new surroundings provided a fun element of camaraderie and community as the rain fell outside. With thanks to all who attended the 2018 Reunion and all who supported their Class Giving, we would also like to recognize and thank the 2018 Reunion Chairs whose dedication and hard work made the weekend such a success.

At Webb today, as in years past, we educate and inspire young people to act with honor and moral courage in everything they do. This combined with a drive for academic excellence provides our moral compass and forms our mission. Webb nurtures smart, curious, and independent minded students to become bold and courageous leaders. You can help perpetuate these values by ensuring that we are able to support the best and brightest students without regard to a family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition. Our mission and our future depend on it. Webb’s enduring legacy can be your personal legacy when you partner with us to protect and enrich these incredibly important values by including Webb in your philanthropic planning. There are many ways to do so: A PROVISION IN YOUR WILL OR LIVING TRUST; ENEFICIARY DESIGNATION OF YOUR IRA, B 401(K), OR OTHER RETIREMENT PLAN; BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION OF LIFE INSURANCE; CHARITABLE TRUSTS; CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES. If you are 70 1/2 or older you can also transfer up to $100,000 per year without paying income tax on the withdrawal and it can satisfy your required minimum distribution.

Remainder Interest in a Personal Residence or Farm: You may retain a life interest in your home or farm while deeding the property to The Webb Schools. Though you may continue to live in or use the property, you may claim a tax deduction at the time the property is transferred.

Life Insurance: The Webb Schools can be a total or partial beneficiary of an existing whole life insurance policy, or a new policy may be taken out for this purpose. Life insurance can be used to cover charitable gifts made from your estate. Annuities may also be given to Webb. Contact Bob Fass at bfass@webb.org or (909) 445-8252 for more information.
