16 17 THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS

THE YEAR IN REVIEW:

THE ARTS There is a vibrant, thriving arts community at Webb. In 2016-17, students and faculty mounted two major theatrical events—the play Argonautika in the fall, and in the spring, the musical Urinetown (pictured). The Webb Schools Dance Company also created and mounted a winter performance of Katastrofi. And during the year, the orchestra and chamber singers performed several major concerts, as well as collaborated and supported the annual musical production. Students working in the visual and media arts show their work during Art Cafes and elsewhere.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOLS

Let me begin with thank you! Thank you to everyone in the Webb Family— alumni, current parents, past parents, faculty, staff and friends—for your commitment to our mission and for your generous support. As we close out and celebrate our 95th school year, while also beginning to plan for The Centennial 1922-2022, I am so grateful to our community on so many levels.

As you will read here in The Report of the Schools 2016-17, we had a strong and successful year. We graduated a talented class of seniors into some of the best colleges and universities across the country and around the world. In the way of philanthropic support, we received contributions of more than $5.2 million for important capital projects, the endowment, and The Webb Fund. And we started the year with every bed and seat filled—412 students in total—125 of which are new, eager and talented young people ready to begin their Webb careers. You’ll be hearing more about them (and from them) in the weeks and months ahead.

THE WEBB ADMISSION OFFICE IN ACTION

ACCORDING TO DR. JAMILA EVERETT, WEBB’S NEW DIRECTOR OF ADMISSION AND FINANCIAL AID, PARTNERSHIPS AND STRONG RELATIONSHIPS ARE KEY TO BUILDING AN ADMISSION PROGRAM THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME. On arriving to campus last summer, she began by building her team. Dr. Everett promoted long-time staff leader Jeff Stodgel to senior associate director of admission and financial aid, and then added three new professionals to the office team—a team supported by Executive Assistant Amy Stoddard.

NEW ADMISSION STAFF Sarah Garcia, assistant director of admissions, comes to Webb from the world of college admissions, where she recruited international and outof-state students. Sarah attended a boarding school in England and has familial connections to Webb. Her

brother Nick graduated from Webb in 2006 and her other brother was married in the Vivian Webb Chapel. David Martinsen, associate director of admission, was born and raised as a TCK (Third Culture Kid) in Guatemala. He has eight years of college admission experience, having served his last appointment at Villanova University. He is no stranger to boarding schools having spent his first eight years of life at a small boarding school located in the highlands of Guatemala where his parents served as dorm parents and faculty. Karley Velasquez, admission coordinator, completed her BA in

Communication Studies from Azusa Pacific University in 2016. At Azusa Pacific, Karley served as the Assistant Educational Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Academic ServiceLearning and Research. Most recently, Karley worked for Second Image National as a forms processor/ coordinator, creating, revising, and editing confidential documents. By early fall, the Admission team was on the road logging thousands of miles on behalf of Webb. Team members visited Arizona (Phoenix), California (Aliso Viejo, Beverly Hills, Corona del Mar, Glendora, Kentfield, Los Angeles,

Newport Beach, Palo Alto, Rolling Hills, Pasadena, San Diego, San Gabriel, Saratoga, Walnut Creek), Colorado (Aspen, Boulder, Denver, Greenwood Village), Massachusetts (Deerfield, Marlborough, West Newton), Connecticut (Pomfret, Washington), New York (New York City), Texas (Austin, Dallas, Houston), Washington D.C., Washington (Seattle), United Kingdom (London), China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Mexico (Mexico City). As part of this important work, staff organized dozens of informal gatherings to tout the benefits of a Webb education. They visited middle schools and middle school fairs, and they reached out to current families and alumni to produce a class of students ready to realize their academic potential and achieve their educational goals within the framework of Webb’s mission. And all this hard work is reflected in the final numbers and the extraordinary class enrolled. Last year, some 721 potential students started applications, 505 submitted full applications, and Webb accepted 164—resulting in an admit rate of 33% from submitted applications, and 23% from started applications. Statistically the entering class broke down to: ebb School of California admitted W 24 day and 55 boarding students ivian Webb School admitted 28 V day and 57 boarding students

s many can imagine, enrolling a school like Webb is part art and part science. To get the right balance of talents isn’t easy. In Webb’s ongoing efforts to build on its strength as a diverse campus, the Admission team also forged a number of important new partnerships with several wellregarded organizations: he New Jersey SEEDS scholars T program which changes the lives of motivated, high-achieving students from low-income families by providing transformative educational opportunities at schools like Webb. According to Dr. Everett, the “seeds” of this relationship will come to fruition in the coming years. he Independent School Alliance, T a non-profit organization located in Culver City, California, whose mission is to inform members of racial communities presently underrepresented in independent schools of the option of an independent school education. GIVING HORNBUCKLE FAMILY ESTABLISHES $500,000 FINANCIAL AID ENDOWMENT FUND

F

inally, Webb’s commitment to promoting racial, cultural and socioeconomic diversity is evident in its deep and wide investment in financial aid. Since its founding, Webb has remained committed to providing access to students from a wide variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Last year, the total amount of financial aid available for Webb students was $4.8 million, which provided assistance to 35% of our students. Webb is steadfast in its efforts to foster an inclusive community where all students have access to opportunity, and enjoy the potential to thrive academically and socially. Here’s to another great year, and to the year ahead!

Wendy and Bill Hornbuckle P ’19 have a deeply held belief that deserving students should have the opportunity to attend Webb without the barrier of financial need. Previously, Bill and Wendy established an endowed fund at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Bill’s alma mater) to provide financial aid to deserving students. They enthusiastically decided that they wished to do the same at Webb, making a leadership commitment of $500,000 to establish The Wendy and William Hornbuckle Family Endowed Scholarship Fund at The Webb Schools. When fully funded, this endowed scholarship will provide significant financial aid for students who will be known as Hornbuckle Scholars. The Hornbuckle Scholarship Fund will allow Webb to attract and support the best and brightest students who wish to build on an established foundation of personal integrity, hard work and personal achievement. This fund will support Webb students who have demonstrated financial need – with a preference for students from the greater Las Vegas, Nevada community, where the Hornbuckles make their home. Bill serves as the President of MGM Resorts International. Wendy is a member of the Nevada Women’s Philanthropy Foundation where she serves on the Executive and Outreach Committees and chairs the Grant Monitoring Committee.

PRAVINA DHOLAKIA SCHOLARSHIP Sanjay Dholakia ’87 and Melissa Barnes Dholokia ’87 are a Webb love story – they were married 11 years after they graduated from Webb. With the roots of their household founded in our history, it is fitting that the family, which includes Sanjay’s brother Sameer Dholokia ’91, decided, in 2001, to create the Pravina Dholakia Scholarship Fund, an endowed financial aid fund to provide scholarship support for a deserving Vivian Webb School student. The fund was named in memory of Sanjay and Sameer’s mother. “My mother used to tell us ‘You can’t take anything with you when you leave this earth. The measure of your life is in the number of people you help,’” explained Sanjay. This year, the family committed an additional $75,000 to the fund, with $50,000 from Melissa and Sanjay, and $25,000 from Sameer. “When my mom passed away during my sophomore year at Webb, I was devastated. The extraordinary support and love of the Webb community enabled me to get through a very tough time,” explained Sameer. “Giving back to Webb, in her honor, is deeply important and gratifying to our whole family.” The Report of the Schools 2016-17

Q&A

WITH HECTOR MARTINEZ: THE YEAR IN COLLEGE GUIDANCE “ We measure success by helping each student find the best fit for them where they can thrive.”

H

ector Martinez has been helping Webb students find the school of their dreams for more than 20 years, no matter if that dream is studying in the Ivy League, creating at the world’s top art and design schools, or competing in Division I athletics. He holds an MA degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Claremont Graduate University, and a BA from Pitzer College. He is also one of the best-known and most respected college placement officers in the country who has served as Chairman of The College Board National Forum and founding member and trustee for the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools. His leadership and service to the profession includes an extensive list of other major professional organizations such as

8

The Webb Schools

NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling), WACAC (Western Association for College Admission Counseling), TABS (The Association of Boarding Schools), and the World Leading Schools Association where he recently presented on six different panels this July in Shanghai. The 2017 College Guidance Team also includes Anthony Shin ’99, associate director, and Adriana Flores, executive assistant. Together, this team serves as the resource for the information and advice students and their families need to understand and navigate the complex college admission process. And, even more importantly perhaps, they serve as a link to the college community, working closely with college admission officers to help them

understand Webb students’ experiences and accomplishments—especially considering Webb’s innovative academic and boarding programs. At the end of the 2016-17 academic year, Martinez sat down to discuss the year in college counseling. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE “TRENDS” YOUR OFFICE IS EXPERIENCING IN THE COLLEGE ADMISSION PROCESS? It just gets harder and harder! Here are some facts to back that up: According to the USA Today College Report: college application numbers for a spot in the Class of 2021 defied expectations, setting records at many universities – including more than 102,000 freshmen applications at UCLA.

IM PA C T

tanford University reported a S record-number of applications to the Class of 2021, with 44,073 students applying (they accepted 2,050), and Harvard University also reported a record-high number of applications for 2016-17, with 39,494 students applying for admission (2,056 accepted). It was also a harder year for the wait list—there were less offers to students on wait lists. At Webb, we ensure that our families and students are welleducated about their options. Everyone got admitted to a four-year college or university despite the challenges and odds. Everyone has a good place to call home. In fact, with more than 400 acceptances from more than 150 different colleges and university, all 104 Class of 2017 graduates should be

very proud of their achievements. At a time when the competition to get into the best colleges is at its most fierce, it is truly remarkable that this class was blessed with so many outstanding acceptances and final college choices. A few more facts for you: 0% of the Webb Class of 2017 9 will be attending colleges ranked in the top 10% in America (by U.S. News & World Report) and 100% of the graduating class was admitted to a selective four-year college or university including such prestigious schools as: Stanford, Columbia, Dartmouth, United States Military Academy, West Point, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago, Tufts: and more. he first Webb student ever will be T attending the highly selective Yale

University NUS program in Singapore. HOW DOES THE COLLEGE GUIDANCE TEAM AT WEBB STAY CURRENT WITH TRENDS IN THE PROFESSION? Every year we travel to the National Association for College Admission Counseling Conference, which was held last year in Columbus, Ohio. (NACAC has a mission to provide counseling and admission professionals with the expert advice and tools they need to better serve students and improve the college transition process). We also attended the College Board Forum where speakers included New York Times columnist and best-selling author Thomas Friedman, and United States Congressman Joaquin Castro.

This week-long gathering of sessions and workshops provides opportunities to learn about best practices and fresh ideas, new education policies and legislation, and the latest thinking on college readiness, access, affordability, and student success. Also, this year, Bryn Mawr president, Kimberly Cassidy, established a Presidential Advisory Council made up of college admission counselors from some of the leading high schools in America. And she invited Webb to join. This group will serve as a think tank to discuss new issues as well as the challenges the group faces in this increasingly competitive atmosphere. HOW IS THE COLLEGE GUIDANCE TEAM STAYING VISIBLE IN THE GREATER COMMUNITY? First, we already enjoy very high visibility within the college community, and we continue to travel throughout the country to educate colleges about Webb’s programs. This year we visited 25 different campuses.

10

The Webb Schools

In addition, between Sept. 1 and Dec. 15, 2016, The Webb Schools hosted representatives from 120 different colleges and universities, including individual visits and larger groups. Representatives from Harvard University, Cornell University, Brown University and Northwestern University utilized the facilities at Webb to conduct their alumni interview days, providing access to Webb students as well as to high school students within a 25-mile radius of campus. IN ADDITION TO VISITING AND TALKING TO REPRESENTATIVES FROM COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD, HOW DOES YOUR OFFICE FURTHER PROMOTE THE MISSION OF WEBB? We are definitely out in the community—not only promoting Webb, but the expertise of our office. I made a presentation at the College Board Forum about “The New Ivies”—

schools beyond the Ivy League that are just as sought after for their commitment to academic excellence. Anthony Shin ’99 spoke on Asian student admission—the challenges and successes—at the College Board Western Regional Forum. We also traveled with Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale, to mainland China, Hong Kong and Korea where we had numerous opportunities to speak about the college admission process and the advantages provided by Webb’s College Guidance office. HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS IN YOUR OFFICE? This is a personalized process, each year, for a little more than 100 students. We measure success by helping each student find the best fit for them where they can thrive.

ALUMNI COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT, OUTGOING PRESIDENT MOVES TO WEBB BOARD OF TRUSTEES On July 1, 2017, Doug Gregg ’66, a longtime supporter of Webb and a past reunion chair, became President of the Webb Alumni Council. He succeeds Dr. Rahmi Mowjood ’90, who recently accepted a seat on The Webb Schools’ Board of Trustees. “Doug is a consummate leader who bleeds blue and gold,” said Dr. Mowjood. “He is well poised to take the Alumni Council to the next level as we approach the schools’ centennial. Doug has been very involved in recruiting new members to the Council and is going to bring a balanced, generous and congenial vibe to the Alumni Council for the foreseeable future.” Gregg lives in Carlsbad with his wife Christine. He was a Deputy District Attorney for the County of San Diego for more than 30 years, until his retirement in 2008. He has been a member of the Alumni Council since 2012. Dr. Mowjood is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and the co-owner and Chief Medical Officer of the Cucamonga Valley Medical Group. He is also a professor of Family Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences. Dr. Mowjood sits on several medical committees, including the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California, and the San Antonio Community Hospital. In addition to his prominence in the field of medicine, he serves as a volunteer for many religious and inter-religious organizations. He is a board member for the Muslim Public Affairs Council as well as the Islamic Center of the Inland Empire.

DR. THERESA A. SMITH, ASSISTANT HEAD OF SCHOOLS

A

DYNAMIC

NEW CURRICULUM PASSES THE TEST

SHORTLY AFTER THERESA SMITH, PhD JOINED WEBB IN THE SUMMER OF 2011, THEN AS DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, SHE FOUND HERSELF STANDING IN FRONT OF A SIXTY-FOOT ROPES COURSE DURING THE FIRST DAY OF HER SOPHOMORE ADVISEES’ ORIENTATION RETREAT. SHE WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS ABOUT THE COURSE, BUT SHE FOUND HERSELF ENCOURAGING A NEW STUDENT, AND TOGETHER, THEY MADE THE JOURNEY UP THE ROPES AND DOWN THE ZIP LINE. How does a high school prepare students for careers that might not even currently exist? For a world, whose landscape is undefined and constantly shifting? How does it instill in them the creativity and flexibility to address future social, technological and economic challenges?

“Helping students take risks, both inside and outside of the classroom, as they learn and grow into themselves is what being an educator means to me. I want to help Webb students become unbounded thinkers, and that can only happen in an environment where they’re supported by their peers and their teachers. That’s Webb.” On July 1 of 2017, Dr. Smith became Webb’s newly appointed Assistant Head of Schools. In this new leadership role, she’s eagerly digging into the fundamental questions at the core of Webb’s important work.

12

The Webb Schools

Research on teaching and learning has advanced in the last decade perhaps more than in those of the previous half century combined—the stand-anddeliver model of teaching and learning, while still valuable, is giving way to new methods founded on research about how children learn best. In fact, it was on Dr. Smith’s arrival at Webb some five years ago that the faculty and administration embarked on a strategic planning process to answer these critical questions and more, including: what qualities and habits of mind do we want for students as they head out into this diverse and ever-changing world? What are colleges and new employers

looking for and, what are colleges and universities doing to address these same questions? After a deliberate and thoughtful process, which included visiting boarding and day schools around the country and even nearby colleges (Webb is, after all, located in Claremont, home to the prestigious and highly-ranked Claremont Colleges – including Pomona College, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Pitzer College as well as two graduate institutions: Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute), a dynamic new curriculum emerged. Today, the courses designed for freshmen and sophomores are skills-based and cross-disciplinary. Building on the skills students develop during their first two years at Webb, courses for juniors and seniors introduce students to college-level advanced study and research.

“WE CONTINUE TO LOOK AT HOW WE’RE LIVING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR MISSION — LEADERSHIP, HONOR AND SERVICE — ACROSS ALL THE COMPONENTS OF STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES AT WEBB.”

Cantwell encouraged others in the community, including faculty to get involved and join the reading. She posted comments about assignments on Facebook and inspired students to interpret the work using podcasts. Each student in the class produced a podcast related to the book. Liu worked on his podcast when the class was just 100 pages into the reading. “It gave us a snapshot of the aristocracy at the time, so I explored those themes and interviewed other teachers who were reading it, as well as my classmates.”

“We looked at the example of the Alf Museum – the educational model there is inquiry-based and hands-on,” said Dr. Smith. “That model is part of Webb’s roots.” This past year there were 28 new electives in the humanities and six new science electives. Some of these were Advanced Studies courses, which, according to the Course Selection Guide, “are characterized by their depth of study, the embrace of the latest in academic research, and their attention to making connections among disciplines.” By way of example, here are three new representative courses preparing Webb students to creatively address the world in the 21st Century.

THE LONG NOVEL Weighing in at more than 1,150 pages, (approximately 560,000 words) War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy has long been regarded as a daunting tome – far too time-consuming to be part of the syllabus in an ordinary English class. But what if the book itself could be studied for an entire semester?

14

The Webb Schools

Elizabeth Cantwell’s Advanced Studies class, The Long Novel, is a marathon – one with many challenges and rewards as students read-up to 30-40 pages a night and through class discussions and lectures, examine the cultural, social, and historical forces that combined to produce a great work of literature (future pieces might also include Crime and Punishment or Moby Dick). “In today’s distraction-driven world, it’s nice to engage with art in a longterm form,” said Cantwell. “We’re tracking characters over a span of years, looking at the geography of the place, and trying to understand the cultural context of the times.” “During the first half of class, we usually discuss the assigned reading,” explained Tom Liu ’18. “And then we might have a lecture about Russian society at that time – to give us context. We also talk about Tolstoy – what were his intentions, what was happening at the time?”

In the beginning, Liu explained, the book was very intimidating, “I wasn’t used to reading that much, but I got into the flow of it.” As a final project, the class presented a mock literary conference with panels and a keynote speaker.

LINEAR ALGEBRA With more and more Webb students finishing the math curriculum in less than three years, teacher Jim Dahler knew he had to find new challenges for his students. During a semestersabbatical, he traveled to schools back east, talked to other educators and determined that Linear Algebra was the class he wanted to offer. “I attended a workshop in Boston on an innovative Linear Algebra curriculum developed by a team of educators working with a National Science Foundation grant. We went through their book,” he explained. “Webb’s course is meant to be conceptual, based on habits of mind – not just a teacher standing at the front of the class saying, ‘here’s how you do this.’”

IM PA C T

GIVING GeoGebra software is used extensively to visualize and investigate three-dimensional geometry; this class helps prepare students to take multivariable calculus in college.

learning. Sometimes classes are really specific – you’re learning to do well on a test, but in this class, we investigate what we’re interested in. This is like a class I imagine I’ll be taking in college.”

“There are so many applications of linear algebra – in computer science, finance, science, and engineering,” said Dahler. “This class gives students a solid foundation for advanced studies.”

Shyam Arya ’18 says people were “afraid for me” when he told them he was going to take Organic Chemistry. “But we’re in the lab creating medicines, learning why molecules are bonding the way they are,” he said. “The best part is discovering for myself – not just having a teacher tell me. We have the opportunity to build on the concepts we’ve learned. I’m building on previous knowledge to create new knowledge.”

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY “This is really more typical of a class you’d be taking in college,” said Sally Mingarelli of her Organic Chemistry course. And, in fact, students in Mingarelli’s Organic Chemistry worked with college students in the lab of Daniel O’Leary, an organic chemist and the Carnegie Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Chemistry Department at Pomona College. “I reached out to Dr. O’Leary, his daughter Maggie ’15 attended Webb for two years, and he had students in his upper level spectroscopy class pair-up with Webb students,” she explained. In Webb’s new state-of-the-art advanced science and research lab, the Thornton Lab, which was supported by a leadership gift from trustee Ming Chung Liu and the Liu/Cheung family, students synthesize molecules at Webb, and then take them to Pomona to look at them under the college’s infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers. “I like science and math, but my family said, ‘you’re crazy!’ when I decided to take Organic Chemistry,” said Ellie Canty ’18. “There’s a lot of concept-based

THE BOARDING PROGRAM Dr. Smith is enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead in evaluating and enhancing the residential program, especially as Webb looks to The Centennial. “Webb is very intentional about the education we provide – all the pieces of it are equally important and so we want to work across academics, creative endeavors, sports, etc., to make sure we’re providing our students with a powerful and well-rounded experience,” she explained. And, perhaps most importantly, she added, is to continue to focus on how we incorporate the mission of the school in students’ daily experiences, year-round. “We continue to look at how we’re living the fundamentals of our mission – leadership, honor and service – across all the components of students’ experiences at Webb.”

MCDERMOTT ’83 FAMILY CREATES ENDOWMENT FUND FOR EXCELLENCE IN MANDARIN The McDermott Family, Michael McDermott ’83 and Amanda Bi, in honor of their daughter Allegra ’18, have made a leadership gift to establish an endowed fund to support teacher and student development in World Languages and Cultures. Specifically, these funds will be used to support instruction in Mandarin and provide faculty and students with resources they can use to further their immersion into their study of Mandarin and Chinese culture. “We hope to inspire more Americans (with no family connection to China like me) to learn the language. I feel extremely grateful to my parents for giving me the opportunity to study Chinese. It was life changing,” McDermott said. Soon after graduating from UCLA, Michael moved to China to work and learn the language. It was an experiment in total language immersion—and it succeeded. His fluency rapidly increased and his interest and love for Chinese language and culture grew. He later married Amanda Bi in China and together they founded Gung-Ho Films, one of the largest and most successful television, print and film production companies in China. Their clients have included major companies like Nike and P&G, as well as projects with such renowned directors and producers as Spike Jonze and Oliver Stone. As Webb has continued to expand its outreach and travel throughout Asia, Michael and Amanda have been true partners—supporting our efforts in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and beyond. Endowed funds support the schools, the museum and designated programs in perpetuity. As such, a healthy endowment helps cushion against tumultuous financial markets, shifts in enrollment and ultimately acts as a line of defense that enables Webb to remain focused on its values and mission. With The Centennial on the not-too-distant horizon (2022), Webb seeks to grow and expand its endowment for financial aid, teacher support and development, the Alf Museum, and more.

History is an interesting word at a paleontology museum. HISTORY, IN THE CONTEXT

his coming year, Museum Director Don Lofgren will embark on a partial sabbatical during which he will write a book about Raymond Alf and the history of the Peccary Society. Its planned publication for 2018 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the museum’s dedication to its founder. Today at the Alf Museum, when students and teachers “do history” together they practice the type of critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills set forth in The Centennial Strategic Plan. The Alf Museum is many things to many people, and each year, the remarkably capable staff and the students who study there embark on adventures, unearth fossils, contribute to science, and share their discoveries with thousands of visitors, scientists and school children. And 2016-17 was no exception.

ADVENTURES AND FOSSIL FINDING long-term Alf Museum project A is currently focused on a biostratigraphic and sedimentological analysis of Tertiary strata in southwest Montana where fossils of interest have been collected by the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University in the 1950s and the American Museum of Natural History in the 1980s and 1990s (by Malcolm McKenna ’48 primarily).

GIVING ALF TRUSTEE MAKES $100,000 PLEDGE TO MUSEUM ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN Doug Myles, a stalwart supporter of The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology for more than 25 years, made a generous $100,000 gift to the museum’s endowment as part of the museum’s larger $3 million endowment campaign. Myles has served as a board trustee for both The Webb Schools and the Alf Museum and understands the importance of endowment in providing financial security for an institution. “Doug has been a leader of the Alf Museum’s Board of Trustees for many years and raised our sights in terms of fundraising,” explained Dr. Don Lofgren, museum director. “A strong endowment provides financial security, which will insure a bright future for the Alf Museum. The successful completion of the current endowment campaign is something Doug is very passionate about and this gift illustrates his commitment. Doug’s strong support of the museum over the past two decades has been exemplary.”

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS PROJECT RECEIVES CAPSTONE GIFT FROM LUO-JIANG FAMILY One of the most fundamental roles of a natural history museum, such as the Alf Museum, is safeguarding specimens in the collection so that they can be furthered studied and utilized to describe and name species. And none of this work is possible without the generous support of donors like Yanji Luo and Li Jian P ’20 who made a $100,000 capstone gift towards this important project. The Luo-Jiang family were just beginning their association with The Webb Schools (their son was a freshman last year) when they decided to make their notable contribution. “With this gift, we were able to fully fund a 50% increase in collections capacity by installing a compactor system, a revolutionary change in our ability to serve as a world class research institution,” explained Dr. Lofgren. “Our amazing collection of fossils is now fully accessible so anyone can search through it via the Internet, and scientists can visit in person to utilize our fossils for research. We now have enough space to house all the fossils that will be found by Webb students on Peccary trips for the next two decades!”

AT THE HEART OF THE CAMPUS: WEBB FACULTY AT

WORK PLAY AND

T

he heart of The Webb Schools is its boarding community with students and faculty living and learning together on a beautiful 150-acre campus. Webb is, quite simply, a place that feels like home. And the Webb family enjoys it all together, sharing meals, playing sports, embracing new cultural experiences, and traveling the globe together. Students can easily access adult mentorship as they enjoy a nurturing and supportive environment in which to achieve their academic, athletic and personal goals. This accessibility is one of the hallmarks of what makes the Webb community special. Through their shared experiences and accomplishments, students and faculty create a special bond— one rich with encouragement and a genuine interest in learning, exploring and understanding.

Their sons, Royce ’14 and Edgar ’16 were boarders whose experiences were greatly enriched by their interactions and connections with Webb teachers and administrators who live and work with students in a vibrant boarding community. To that end, Jiang and Yu have made combined gifts totaling $350,000 in honor of their children to support The Jiang Family House (one of two units in a new duplex on campus). They have also championed other initiatives at Webb including generous support of the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center. Also during Parents Weekend, the following awards were distributed: WSC Coach of the Year: Brian Caldwell V WS Coach of the Year: Geoff Owers J oann Robinson Staff Distinguished Service Award: Gilda McCleary, for 29 years of service in Price Dining Hall At commencement, the following prizes were announced: he Laurence McMillin Excellence T in Teaching Award, established by David Loo ’79: Michael Szanyi, humanities teacher and dorm head, leader of Webb’s dance program. he Jean E. Demetriades Prize for T Unbounded Teaching, established by Jim Demetriades ’80: Sally Mingarelli, science teacher, and director of experiential learning.

“Peter and Merry are true partners in helping us achieve our vision for the master plan,” said Dutch Barhydt, director of institutional advancement. “Their early gifts for the performing arts center combined with more recent gifts for faculty housing demonstrate their commitment to helping Webb stand out as a world-class residential campus.” When Dodd Fischer ’61 was a student, the west wing of Alamo dorm was already 20 years old (the east wing was finished in 1955). “When we were underclassmen, we all knew the Alamo needed work and repairs, and we knew we wanted it to last a lifetime,” said Fischer. More than 50 years have passed since Fischer’s classmates hit-the-books, literally – there were no laptops or Internet – and made their homes in Thompson Webb’s paean to classic Spanish-inspired California architecture. To celebrate that special time, Fischer has established The Alamo Fund, an endowed maintenance fund providing for the upkeep and renewal of the Alamo, a home-away-from-home for generations of Webb students. The fund was created to honor four of Dodd’s lifelong friends and classmates: Andrew Branscome ’61, a southern gentleman who championed the rights of man; twin brothers Don ’61 and John Girard ’61, who had a combined 94 years of service as medical doctors; and Samuel Zemurray III ’61, another southern gentleman and cattle expert who helped others less fortunate receive independent educations. Fischer previously founded the Dodd Fischer ’61 Endowment Fund in 2005 with his wife Nancy to provide unrestricted support to Webb. Of the Alamo project, Fischer ’61 explained: “We (the Class of ’61) have taken our time, it’s true, but as we all know, there’s no better time than now to celebrate the Alamo’s historic features – especially as our class passes its 56th anniversary – to do our part to add some polish to Thompson and Vivian Webb’s grand architectural monument, hand-crafted of native clay with a rich southern design and local roots.”

UNUS PRO OMNIBUS, OMNES PRO UNO IS A LATIN PHRASE THAT TRANSLATES IN ENGLISH TO “ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE”. It is a motto traditionally associated with the title heroes of the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, but it is also easily applied to the athletic teams at Webb, where sportsmanship is foremost and teamwork is the foundation for building character, friendship and important life skills. The athletic program at Webb cultivates competition and cooperation—winning is important, but so is learning to be a leader and a teammate. This year Webb students excelled at these most important aspects of athleticism and did so at record-breaking pace with three highlight-filled seasons. In total, 17 of 21 teams qualified for post season play with spectacular results including: 1 0 league championships including WSC and VWS cross country, WSC and VWS tennis, WSC and (for the first time ever) VWS water polo, WSC and (for the first time ever) VWS soccer, softball, and WSC golf.

There will also be soft-seating to provide a conversation pit (facing a 50” flat screen), and a table area to provide coaches with much-needed work space. New paint and carpet, improved LED lighting, air conditioning, and acoustically-enhanced ceiling tiles will ensure that teams have an attractive, comfortable, well-equipped space in which to assemble. The new team room is a state-of-the-art facility and demonstrates the schools’ dedication to the important role of athletics in Webb students’ educational experience. Jack was well-known for his strength of character and joy for life – he was an avid sportsman, from captain of the Gauls football team to a skilled skier, tennis player and fisherman. He was also a well-known horseman earning numerous ribbons and trophies. After graduating from Harvard College, he went on to enjoy a successful career as an investment banker. Mickey was an American history professor at the University of Southern California. He has written several books on 20th Century American culture, and his awards include a Fulbright grant to teach at the University of Indonesia.

GIFTS OF A LIFETIME:

THE THOMPSON AND VIVIAN WEBB SOCIETY Education is a legacy, and for so many generations of alumni and their families, Webb is a dynamic part of their legacy. Throughout the years, legions of committed alumni, parents, trustees, and friends have supported Webb to advance its mission and provide for its future. Planned gifts, such as bequests or charitable trusts, can be an advantageous way to provide for a future gift to a non-profit organization like The Webb Schools. The Thompson and Vivian Webb Society honors an extraordinary group of alumni, parents and friends who have made Webb a beneficiary of a will or trust, life income gift, IRA or other retirement plan, or planned gift. This year, the gifts of two extraordinary individuals will help ensure that The Webb Schools will continue to transform lives long into the future.

ROBERT “BOB” RODGERS ’38

Robert “Bob” Rodgers ’38 had a lifelong love of Webb. He passed away in 2009 and was survived by his wife Ruth. The Rodgers’ named The Webb Schools as one of four charitable beneficiaries in their living trust, each sharing 25% of the estate. Ruth visited regularly with Webb staff after Bob’s death to keep informed about campus news. She passed away in 2017 at the age of ninety-five thus setting into motion their planned gift. For Bob, Webb was a home away from home; he excelled in multiple sports and was editor of the Blue and Gold. Bob went into the service following Dartmouth as a journalist for Stars and Stripes. He later worked in both

public relations and sales including with NBC in New York. With Ruth, Bob traveled the world. Today, their legacy of generosity will continue at Webb, Dartmouth College, The Bishop’s School and Bryn Mawr College because Bob and Ruth held a lifelong belief that a quality education is the pathway to success.

BOB CONNOLLY ’89

Bob Connolly ’89 has made a significant bequest intention to The Webb Schools. He currently serves on the Alumni Council as a Memberat-Large, and has enjoyed a strong affiliation with his alma mater. In fact, it was his affiliation with the Alumni Council that prompted the

extraordinary gift – an unrestricted bequest intention that will serve the schools as it is needed. Bob is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Executive Director of Connolly Counseling & Assessment, with locations in Claremont, Pasadena, Los Angeles and Orange County. Bob’s parents were math teachers at Webb from 1982 to 1991, and his two sisters Sara ’90 and Veronica ’93, also attended. In 1998, he lived with and took care of Ray Alf during his last year on campus. After Webb, he attended Pitzer College and worked as a math tutor and then as a social worker. He got his MA in theology from Claremont School of Theology and then his doctorate in psychology from Alliant International University. Bob has been an active alumnus hosting students and young alumni for Unbounded Days and Webb@Work internships.

A

s students, they are the heart and soul of the school, and then, upon graduation, they become alumni—the institution’s most loyal supporters, its role models and ambassadors across the country and around the world. More than 250 alumni returned to campus for Alumni Weekend 2016, held on October 21 and 22. The group represented seven decades of Webb and traveled from numerous countries and 23 different states. During the threeday event, the Class of 1986 broke the attendance record for a 30th reunion with 42 attendees. And more than 30 members of the Class of 2011 celebrated their five-year reunion. Among the special celebrations, the Class of 1961 held a special dinner to celebrate their 55th reunion and the Class of 1966 honored their 50th year as graduates with a pinning ceremony in the chapel and a special dinner on Friday night. Alumni Awards were presented to: J on Congdon ’81, Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award, which recognizes an alumnus/a

In addition to Alumni Weekend, alumni gatherings took place across the United States and in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing, China, and Seoul, Korea.

ALUMNI GIVING: ABOVE AND BEYOND In honoring their lifelong connection to the schools and their classmates, Webb alumni are also incredibly generous in their support of students and faculty: he Webb Fund March Madness T tournament raised awareness about the importance of annual giving, which provides institutional support and enhanced opportunities for current students on campus. This year’s March Madness Champions were the Class of 1989, followed by runner-up 1961, both classes that embody Webb’s strong tradition of alumni giving. T he Class of 1961 launched The David D. Fawcett ’61 and Diane Wilsdon Scholarship Fund to honor and recognize their classmate’s

extraordinary 39-year career at Webb, as well as his wife’s 30-year tenure as a teacher. The pair retired in 2014. “ When John Erving and I realized that David and Diane were about to retire, we knew we needed to celebrate a splendid classmate, and a dear friend, and two teachers who have forever had an impact on our class and school,” said Dodd Fischer ’61. “We loved him then and we love him now, and the school will be forever the better for their many fine students, examples of leadership, and contributions to Webb.”

nd this year, Richard Clarke ’63 set A a record for the most consecutive years of giving with 49 years – he has not missed a year since 1968 when the 747 was introduced to the skies, and the first manned spacecraft orbited the moon. Webb alumni give their time and expertise as well. Through the Webb@Work program, alumni are able to access jobs and experiences in a host of different settings. Listings

on the Webb@Work job board have included opportunities to work at tech firms, doctors’ offices, in sales and marketing, at law firms, and engineering companies. During Sophomore Career Evening last spring, 12 Webb alumni returned to campus to talk to current students about career possibilities and reallife experiences. Alumni spoke about their careers in medicine, fashion and game design, S.T.E.M., and law and led discussions on such topics as entrepreneurship and social media. GIVING

The Report of the Schools for the year just completed (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017) is a new publication at Webb. We have purposefully combined two previous forms of communication, the online Annual Report and the written Head of Schools Report so that we can distribute The Report of the Schools 2016-2017 to the entire community in written form. The purpose is simple. We hope that it will be helpful to see the successes and results of the year just completed, not only financial, but across the school, in Academics, Admission, College Counseling, Athletics, Alumni Programs, Parent Programs, Faculty, the Alf Museum and so much more. We would like you to see the students and faculty who directly benefit from your generosity. And most importantly, we want to share how your generosity drives every aspect of the world-class education that happens at Webb. There truly is “a cause and effect” between the gifts

that you give to Webb and the outcomes on campus, and most importantly, in the lives of our students. As Taylor Stockdale, Webb’s Head of Schools, noted in his letter, we all share a “strong partnership.” You are vital to the success of Webb’s mission, and we are honored by your support. Our Advancement Office looks forward to working with you in the months and years ahead and to helping you make your mark at Webb. We thank you for your support in the year just completed, and hope that you will enjoy reading about all the important and good work that you and so many others made possible! GIVING

LEGACY HALL OF FAME We wish to give special recognition to the following donors who have made lifetime gifts of $1 million and greater. Their philanthropy has transformed our campus and impacted the lives of generations of students.

$5 MILLION OR MORE Col. John S. Rogers USAF (RET.) ’59 and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation During the past two decades, Col. John ’59 and June Rogers and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation have transformed the lives of Webb students. Through the Mary Stuart Rogers Endowed Scholarship and the Raymond M. Alf Peccary Society Chair, more than 224 students have received financial aid and the opportunity of a Webb education. In addition to his dedication to growing the schools’ endowment, Col. Rogers has supported capital projects such as the Mary Stuart Rogers Sports Center and Faculty Field.

James D. ’42 & Lin Burke Few people or events have had the powerful impact that Jim ’4 2 and Lin Burke have had on Webb. The Burke’s leadership gift to Webb came in the form of a family cabin on a lake. The cabin and surrounding property were sold for over $6 million, making the Burkes’ gift the largest in Webb’s history. With the proceeds of that sale, Webb built the Copeland Donahue Theater in 2008, the first new construction of an academic building since 1987. In addition to the theater, Jim and Lin’s gift will continue a family legacy of giving back by providing financial aid to deserving students.

$2.5 MILLION OR MORE Blake ’68 and Andrea Brown Blake Brown ’68 and his wife Andrea have helped to transform our campus and educational programs. Their gifts have helped bring the Alf Museum into the modern age with significant support for the Hall of Life campaign, a research laboratory and fossil prep laboratory. They have also supported a renovation of a Next Gen science lab allowing for the highest level of research, the construction of new faculty housing and a major renovation of Hooper Student Center.

Yan Cheung and Ming Chung Liu P ’10 Mr. Liu and Mrs. Cheung, parents of Ken Liu ’10, made the lead gift towards the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center. They have also generously supported major dorm renovations including the historic Alamo renovation in 2009 and a significant remodel of the chemistry lab in 2016.

Robert A. Hefner III ’53 Robert Hefner’s gifts have been focused on supporting faculty and unbounded thinking, and in 1998 he established The Raymond M. Alf Inspirational and Unbounded Teaching Chair in Science. This endowed fund ensures the schools’ ability to attract and retain a teacher of Raymond Alf’s caliber. He also established an endowed fund for Excellence in Science and endowed the Unbounded Thinkers Symposium with the goal of inspiring Webb students to explore new opportunities.

Avery McCarthy ’52 Avery McCarthy’s gifts to Webb have revolved around enhancing technology in the library and funding new technology in classrooms, and funding the Barbara Mott McCarthy Aquatic Center. In addition to the McCarthy Collaborative Learning Lab established in 2000, Avery has helped to fund new software programs and licenses for computer labs and dormitories.

Estate of David J. ’37 and Virginia E. Pinkham In 2000, Webb received over $4 million from a charitable trust set up by David ’37 (1919-1998) and Virginia Pinkham. Their gift was used in part for construction projects, faculty development and programs that will help the schools continue to promote the character of its students.

$1 MILLION OR MORE The Ahmanson Foundation A pre-eminent Southern California institution, The Ahmanson Foundation has partnered with Webb in many of the schools’ finest achievements, from yearly support of deserving students through its Pre-Collegiate Scholarship Program to funding for a faculty endowment fund, Webb’s technology infrastructure and the Ahmanson Lecture Hall, and the Susan. A. Nelson Performing Arts Center.

Gretchen Augustyn P ’89 & Family A former Webb trustee and current Alf Museum trustee, Gretchen Augustyn P ’89 and her family endowed the salary of the Curator at The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology and also created a fund to support the Curator’s research work with students and the scientific community.

John M. Bryan ’43 (1925-2012) During his lifetime, John’s contributions have touched several areas of The Webb Schools ranging from scholarship endowment and The Webb Fund, to the campus master plan and capital improvements such as the student quad area.

The Crean Foundation In 2007, the Crean Foundation established a scholarship to support financial aid for deserving students. The Crean Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund was made possible by the Crean family, and in part by parent and Crean Foundation board member, Susan Thomas P ’05, ’09.

GIVING

James E. Drasdo ’63 Focusing mainly on unrestricted contributions to The Webb Fund, James Drasdo has supported Webb in a variety of ways, always dedicated to the highest priority of the schools. James chaired Webb’s Building Character campaign which raised over $22 million. He also made a leadership gift to help establish the Les and Barbara Perry Faculty Enrichment Fund and funded the Technology Initiatives.

The Fawcett Family David Fawcett ’61 arrived at Webb in the fall of 1958, and the generosity of his family, especially his parents, W. Russell Fawcett and Priscilla Damon Fawcett, has been felt faithfully on campus every year since. Among the family’s larger gifts are Webb’s stately, octagonal W. Russell Fawcett Memorial Library and a bequest to complete renovations to the Jameson Dormitory. Dave was a member of the Webb faculty for 34 years and, along with his wife, math teacher Diane Wilsdon, has quietly and thoughtfully enriched the lives of thousands of Webb students through his wisdom and support. The David D. Fawcett and Diane C. Wilsdon Scholarship Fund honors their legacy.

Charline E. & Michael T. Gallagher P ’07, ’09 Michael and Charline Gallagher were instrumental in supporting Webb’s campus master plan. Their gifts supported the Kirkhill Dorm renovation, the campus turnaround and the reconstruction of the student quad area. The Gallaghers, parents of Candace ’07 and Michael ’09, focused their support on improving the living spaces on campus in an effort to provide the best living environment possible for all Webb students.

Victor E. Heerman ’4 2 (1925-2014) Victor Heerman was a boy of Hollywood. In fact, his parents were Hollywood legends having won an Academy Award in 1933 for co-writing the screenplay adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women. At Webb, Vic was an equestrian, both as a sport and a hobby. He kept a horse on campus and followed all of the races in the news. Following Webb, he served three years in the Army during WWII and graduated from Williams College with Dean’s List honors. Eventually, he struck out on his own forming the Heerman Bloodstock Agency and became one of the most successful breeders of thoroughbred race horses in the country. His clients included classmate George Getty ’4 2. Vic and his wife of 59 years, Lucille, left the majority of their estate to Webb to support the faculty.

Clifford S. Heinz, Jr. ’37 (1919-2015) and the C.S. Heinz Foundation In 1997, the Clifford S. Heinz ’37 Ethical Education Program was established to augment the work of Webb’s student-run honor committees, its curriculum and athletic programs. In 2000 and 2001, Cliff Heinz challenged the Webb community and matched dollar for dollar gifts made to The Webb Fund in support of character development and ethical education. Gifts from Cliff and the C.S. Heinz Foundation have been directed to many areas of the schools, including the Raymond M. Alf Museum, faculty housing, endowment, and The Webb Fund.

Estate of Dwight W. Taylor ’49 (1932-2006) Even as a young boy, Dwight Taylor ’49 had a passion for geology and collecting interesting specimens, especially shells. His curiosity was nurtured at Webb by his teachers, and in particular his mentor and friend, Ray Alf. In his senior year, Dwight placed first in the national Westinghouse Science Talent Search. With this good start, he forged a distinguished career in the sciences including time with the U.S. Geological Survey in the Paleontology and Stratigraphy Branch. Throughout his lifetime and finally using his estate, Dwight Taylor has supported the schools and the Alf Museum, with gifts totaling $1 million.

Charles E. Scripps ’37 (1920-2007) Scion of the legendary media company and board chairman of the E.W. Scripps Company for more than four decades, Charles Scripps was also a proud and stalwart supporter of Webb. He was a founding trustee and returned to the board in the 1980s. His munificent gifts throughout the years have provided support where needed most; perhaps none was more important than his $1 million gift to the 1990s Building Character campaign which helped steer Webb into the 21st century.

Yafei Yuan P ’16, ’20 Yafei Yuan is a man of many talents and ambitions, and a great supporter of excellence in education in China and the United States. He is founder and chairman of Sanpower Group Co., Ltd., headquartered in Nanjing, China. His daughter Donna Yuan ’16 is an alumna of Vivian Webb School. Keenly interested in supporting the strategic vision of Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale, particularly his goal of providing quality housing for all faculty, Mr. Yuan contributed $1 million to assist in the construction of four new faculty homes.

ENDOWED FUNDS As funds held in perpetuity, endowments generate the funds for scholarships, educational programs, athletics, faculty enrichment, and many other areas critical to the success of the schools. A generous endowment gives an institution confidence that it can remain true to its mission regardless of a challenging economy. The board of trustees currently uses a 4.0% payout rate. All funds above this amount are reinvested for continued growth as a hedge against inflation. The Webb Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Goldman Sachs as its new investment advisor effective September 1, 2016. We are forever grateful to the individuals and families listed below whose generosity secures the future of The Webb Schools. Endowment fund categories reflect the greater of the book or market value.

PLANNED GIFTS

The Webb Schools are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Contributions to Webb are tax-deductible to the extent of the law. For more information about any of the following, please contact the Advancement Office at giving@webb.org or (909) 482-5277.

Bequests, Testamentary Trusts, Charitable Trusts and Life Income Plans:

Give Online: Make your tax-deductible gift immediately to The Webb Fund or Alf Museum. Go to webb.org/giving

Gifts of Securities: Webb accepts gifts of appreciated stock or mutual fund shares.

Matching Gifts: Increase your giving power through matching gifts. Many companies will match the charitable contributions of their employees.

Gifts of Property: Property gifts can include real estate and tangible personal property such as antiques, art, and the like.

Planning a gift to The Webb Schools through your will or living trust can be achieved through a new document or a codicil to an existing document. You may specify a dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate or a piece of personal property. Estate gifts made through a will or trust may also help reduce federal estate tax liability and allow you to create a charitable legacy that aligns with your personal values. The Advancement Office can help you make a decision regarding your financial plans, which can also include charitable gifts that pay you income during life or provide for your heirs.

Retirement Assets: Donate part or all of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan. If you are 70 1/2 or older you can also transfer up to $100,000 per year without paying income tax on the withdrawal and it can satisfy your required minimum distribution.

Remainder Interest in a Personal Residence or Farm: You may retain a life interest in your home or farm while deeding the property to The Webb Schools. Though you may continue to live in or use the property, you may claim a tax deduction at the time the property is transferred.

Life Insurance: The Webb Schools can be a total or partial beneficiary of an existing whole life insurance policy, or a new policy may be taken out for this purpose. Life insurance can be used to cover charitable gifts made from your estate. Annuities may also be given to Webb. Contact Bob Fass at bfass@webb.org or (909) 445-8252 for more information.
