Q: Why do you refer your guests to The Welcome Guide® and what makes it an important resource for you?
A: The Welcome Guide® New York offers our guests a comprehensive overview of the city’s attractions, dining options, entertainment, and even safety tips. Having all this information compiled in one place helps our guests navigate the city with confidence and conviction—just like a local!
Q: What are your best tips for exploring NYC like a local?
A: Leave room for spontaneity. While creating an itinerary is great for making the most of your time, the most memorable moments are usually unplanned. Engage with a local, like a shop owner or a bartender, and be ready to discover something unexpected.
Q: What should be on every visitor’s “bucket list” when visiting?
A: No matter the weather, nothing is more New York than taking a stroll or a bike ride through Central Park. Each season brings its own distinct magic to this iconic urban oasis, from cherry blossoms lining the park’s pathways in the Spring to the picturesque snow-covered landscapes worthy of a holiday card in the Winter to the sounds of live music and outdoor performances in the Summer. Central Park is both a vibrant hub of activity and a peaceful urban oasis!
Q: What is the best suggestion you can give a first-time visitor?
A: Don’t worry about buying or refilling a MetroCard— unless you would like it as a keepsake. You can now tap and go with your smartphone or credit/debit card.
Q: For a guest looking for a night on the town, what would you recommend?
A: You can’t go wrong with a Broadway show and dinner at a delicious New York staple, followed by a cocktail at a local hot spot. But in the end, it doesn’t matter what you do, it’s who you’re with!

Broadway Guide Insider:
Isabelle McCalla From York City like a local.
Some of the city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Isabelle McCalla stars as Marlena in the production Water for Elephants, about her favorite places in New York City.
gifted equestrian and has innate powers of healing all those she comes in contact with. It’s such a fun role. I get to sing these haunting ballads, dance on a trapeze, and play opposite my favorite scene partners ever, Grant Gustin and Paul Alexander Nolan.
How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
McCalla- My mother put me in ballet class when I was 8 for the discipline of it. She wanted me to be a nuclear physicist, but I caught the bug early, so the joke’s on her. My previous Broadway shows were Shucked, The Prom, and Aladdin
What is your favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member?
McCalla- Do I have to pick just one?!? Oh boy. I was really swept away by Illinoise. I thought it was some of the most beautiful storytelling through dance I’ve seen in a long while.
What are your favorite NYC local tips?
McCalla- Don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk when walking. And for sure GET OFF YOUR PHONE WHILE CROSSING THE STREET! Drivers, bikers, and even pedestrians are wild. Be present!
If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?
McCalla- I’m partial to the West Village. There are tons of fantastic restaurants and bars in that area that you can hop to.
Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
McCalla- Cacio E Pepe for dinner in the Lower East Side. They serve you pasta out of a Pecorino Cheese wheel, and OH MY LORDIE, is it delicious. Definitely take some lactaid pills before consuming though.
What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC?
McCalla- You can’t beat a New York slice of pizza on the go.

Picnics & Parks in New York City By Meryl Pearlstein & The Welcome Guide Team
Nothing quite compares to the joy of having a picnic in one of New York City’s stunning parks, where the vibrant urban landscape meets lush greenery. Whether you’re lounging on the grass with friends, relishing the warm sun on your skin, or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of nature, a picnic in the park creates an unforgettable experience. Paired with delicious takeout from nearby eateries, a day spent picnicking in these beautiful spaces becomes a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Bryant Park
Running through September 20, various New York City performance companies will showcase their talent at Manhattan’s Bryant Park. Dubbed “Picnic Performances,” the shows take advantage of the city’s burgeoning outdoor culture and, hopefully, good weather. If you missed experiencing live music, concerts and opera over the past year, this is a wonderful chance to grab a lawn spot or chair, spread out your picnic with a chilled rosé and enjoy an evening of some of the best talent around.
August is one of the most action-packed months of the summer in terms of performances. The month kicks off August 2 with Carnegie Hall Citywide: La Excelencia—an award-winning salsa dura band. The party continues on August 9 with Joe’s Pub: Broadway en Spanglish: Jaime Lozano and Florencia Cuenca, where audiences can enjoy a selection of bilingual show tunes.
The finale of Bryant Park’s inaugural ‘Family Day’ on August 10 showcases lively dance performances by Ephrat Asherie Dance and the Barkin/Selissen Project. On August 16, the World Music Institute presents Natu Camara and Samir LanGus, featuring an Afro-rock experience that transcends borders. Enjoy international dance music on August 17 with Cristina Vane, Slavic Soul Party!, and Guachinangos. Take in the New York City Opera’s Tosca on August 23 and 24.
The Vijay Iyer Trio, led by three-time Grammy nominee and MacArthur Fellow Vijay Iyer, promises an unforgettable jazz experience with their innovative sound, featuring bassist Devon Gates and drummer Jeremy Dutton alongside Iyer on August 30. On August 31, take in Contemporary Dance: Mark Morris Dance Group, Blacks in Ballet, and Reed Luplau.
What to bring: Park Avenue Liquor Shop near the Morgan Library is the go-to choice for chilled wines. Then, visit Grand Central Terminal’s market by 7 p.m. to put together a picnic
from Eli Zabar’s Farm to Table, Murray’s Cheese or Pescatore Sushi & Noodles. Don’t forget your blanket and some reusable wine glasses.
Central Park Central Park has a wide variety of locations for picnicking, many not far from the East Side’s Museum Mile, the Upper West Side’s American Museum of Natural History or the New York Historical Society. Favorites are the Great Lawn, which sits more or less in the middle of the park between 79th Street and 85th Street, Turtle Pond at the southern tip of the Great Lawn near Belvedere Castle and Sheep Meadow, a bit further South. Depending on whether you’re arriving from the East Side or the West Side, there are delis, specialty food shops, and a picnic specialist to help you prepare your outdoor feast.
What to Bring: On the East Side, Butterfield Market is a popular gourmet shop with a variety of food departments. You can choose from prepared foods at the gourmet counter, including crab cakes, chicken wings and more elaborate dishes like poached salmon or skirt steak, or stay small with pre-made sandwiches, sushi or salads. The talented baristas at the coffee bar will customize your beverage – try an iced dirty chai or an iced matcha latte for a break from a traditional coffee -- or choose from many of the gourmet sodas and waters. Add one of the gorgeous cupcakes, and you’re good to go. From the West Side, deli fave Barney Greengrass will pack up a super-portable bagel, cream cheese and nova sandwich along with Boylan’s cream soda and a black and white cookie for a very New York-y nosh.
Celebrating more than ten years of feeding hungry New Yorkers, Perfect Picnic NYC puts together picnic assortments from simple to elaborate. Start with a base and add on beverages, a blanket and a basket, if you wish, or just pick up a grab ‘n go meal to add to your own set-up. You can even arrange a “picnic experience” that is full-service, including delivery and cleanup. Owner Wendy Weston creates a menu that changes based on “her cravings” and ingredients of the season. Located near the northern tip of Central Park at 100th Street and Central Park West, Perfect Picnics can be ordered in advance or onsite.
Brooklyn Brooklyn’s parks are equally popular for on-the-lawn and by-the-water spreads. Brooklyn boasts several stunning parks that are ideal for picnics, each offering unique vistas and amenities. Prospect Park is a standout choice, featuring expansive meadows surrounded by lush woodland, as well as picturesque lakeside views; visitors can enjoy a serene atmosphere while indulging in their picnic fare.
Brooklyn Bridge Park, with its stunning waterfront views and backdrop of Manhattan’s skyline, provides an excellent space for relaxation and social gatherings. The park includes picnic tables, open lawns, and playgrounds, perfect for families and friends alike. Additionally, Fort Greene Park offers a blend of historical charm and green space, making it another fantastic option for enjoying a meal outdoors. Each of these parks invites New Yorkers to embrace the outdoors while basking in the community spirit that Brooklyn is known for.
What to Bring: Williamsburg’s popular Black-owned and operated Kokomo offers a kicky picnic package complete with a blanket, canned signature cocktails and an array of Caribbean cuisine. For some authentic island flavor, sample Kokomo’s signature Yardie shrimp pizza with callaloo and grilled pineapple, braised oxtail with rice & peas, a guava BBQ-sauced Calypso burger or jackfruit tacos. Add a Coconut Negroni or a Pain Killer cocktail for the finishing flourish. The restaurant sits in a convenient location for picking up your picnic goodies for a day in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park, Domino Park, 5th Pier Park or by the waterfront on Bushwick Inlet.
Afternoon in West Village EAT Via Carota, guests can indulge in rustic Italian dishes made with seasonal ingredients, providing a warm, inviting atmosphere. Magnolia Bakery is a must-visit, renowned for its classic American baked goods, particularly its iconic banana pudding. Wine lovers will appreciate Perle Wine & Raw Bar, where they can enjoy an exquisite selection of fine wines alongside seafood delicacies. The iconic John’s of Bleeker Street is a must for a classic NYC slice. Dominique Ansel is a staple for dessert enthusiasts, famous for crafting innovative pastries.
PLAY Color Factory is a unique art installation that invites guests to immerse themselves in a vibrant world of color through interactive exhibits and playful installations, making it a perfect spot for creative spirits and families alike. Just a short stroll away, the Museum of Interesting Things showcases an eclectic collection of antiques and curiosities, providing a glimpse into the fascinating past of innovation and design. Nature enthusiasts can find solace in the Jefferson Market Garden, a tranquil oasis filled with lush greenery and beautiful flowers.
DRINK Comedy Cellar is a popular choice for those looking to enjoy a night of laughs, featuring a roster of both established and upand-coming comedians performing stand-up in an intimate setting. For music lovers, the Village Vanguard is a legendary jazz club offering exceptional live performances that have showcased countless renowned artists since its inception. Lastly, The Stonewall Inn holds a significant place in history as a landmark of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, offering a vibrant space for patrons to enjoy drinks while immersing themselves in its rich cultural heritage and lively entertainment.

MULTI-TASKING SPF YEAR-ROUND As awareness of skin health continues to grow, the importance of using SPF yearround has become increasingly paramount. Innovations in sun protection formulas are now allowing users to multitask like never before, blending formidable sun defense with added skincare benefits. With these advancements, protecting skin from sun damage has become a seamless part of daily beauty routines, ensuring that individuals can enjoy the outdoors while maintaining healthy, radiant skin throughout all seasons.
PIPETTE MINERAL SUNSCREEN Pipette presents an excellent selection of sun protection products designed to meet the needs of the entire family, and we had the opportunity to try out three of them during a recent summer getaway. One highlight was their best-selling Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, which provides dependable coverage for both face and body, blending hydration and protection. We were sent samples and were impressed by its effectiveness on sensitive skin, making it suitable for all age groups. Additionally, we tested the new Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, which stood out for its ease of application; the robust spray ensured an even protective layer, and its water-resistant quality enhanced our beach experience. Lastly, the new Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 offered a convenient option for quick touch-ups.
SOL LABS GUARS & GLOW DUO The SOL LABS® Guard & Glow Duo: Ultimate SPF Protection & Hydration Set combines superior protection and hydration for just $47.00. We had the opportunity to try this impressive set, which includes the Natural Mineral SPF 30 Daily Defense and the Hydrating Premium SPF 15 Lip Balm in Lavender Mint. The sunscreen amazed us with its effortless application, gliding smoothly over the skin without leaving any residue, all while delivering strong broad-spectrum sun protection. Infused with skin-nourishing ingredients, its application felt indulgent and beneficial for skin health. Meanwhile, the lip balm, featuring Hyaluronic Acid and Astaxanthin, not only provided deep moisture but also protected our lips from environmental threats. Its delightful lavender mint aroma added a refreshing touch, further enhancing the user experience.
FENTY SKIN’S HYDRA VIZOR HUEZ TINTED MOISTURIZER BROAD SPECTRUM MINERAL SPF 30 SUNSCREEN
Fenty Skin’s Hydra Vizor Huez Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum Mineral SPF 30 Sunscreen has quickly become one of our go-to multi-purpose products. During our product testing, we were delighted to find that it works beautifully as both a tinted moisturizer and a foundation, offering impressive coverage alongside hydration. This groundbreaking formula not only provides broad-spectrum sun protection but also improves skin elasticity and minimizes the appearance of pores and dark spots, delivering both immediate and long-lasting results. Additionally, its fragrance-free composition leaves the skin looking radiant and even-toned. An added highlight is the Hydra Vizor Refillable Case, which promotes sustainability by allowing for easy refills, perfectly aligning with the demand for ecofriendly products. Since its debut, the Hydra Vizor line has truly raised the standards for skincare that addresses a variety of needs while ensuring effective sun protection.
OARS + ALPS GO STICK CLEAR SUNSCREEN & OARS + ALPS FACE + SCALP MIST We had the pleasure of testing Oars + Alps products and were genuinely impressed by their performance and userfriendliness. The Oars + Alps Go Stick Clear Sunscreen, priced at $24, quickly became a standout choice due to its practicality and effectiveness. Its solid stick format made it portable and mess-free, ensuring a clear application that blended well with all skin tones without leaving any unsightly residue. With SPF 35 protection, it provided essential hydration thanks to nourishing ingredients like Jojoba Oil and Alpine Caribou Moss™, making it suitable for all skin types, even post-shave. We also appreciated the Oars + Alps Face + Scalp Mist, which offered a delightful and hassle-free method for applying SPF 35. The lightweight, vegan formula allowed us to easily spritz it onto our face, ears, and scalp without any greasy residue or the need for rubbing in. Designed for everyone, these products not only provided robust sun protection but also embraced a modern, gender-neutral approach to skincare that resonates with all users.
BLOOMEFFECTS TULIP DEW We recently had the opportunity to explore Bloomeffects’ innovative offerings, and we were thoroughly impressed by their effectiveness and ease of use. Our standout favourite is the Tulip Dew Sunscreen Serum, which boasts a lightweight formula that provides excellent coverage. It serves as an ideal daily base, infused with vitamins that nurture the skin. The new Tulip Dew Shield & Glow sun stick presents a travel-friendly option that is remarkably simple to apply. The stick glides on smoothly, offering a translucent glow without any sticky residue, making it perfect for on-the-go.
