Communities go blue for Autism Awareness Day By HOPE E. TREMBLAY Staff Writer WESTFIELD â A group of families gathered yesterday at Mama Cakes to recognize World Autism Awareness Day and Autism Speaksâ Light It Up Blue campaign, enjoying blue frosted cupcakes, and donating to team Jesse James and the Outlaw Walkers. Team Captain Becca Matthew was there with friends and said the support she received was âoverwhelming.â âI must have cried 40 times today,â said the mom of two. Matthewâs son Jesse, age four, has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is the inspiration behind Mama Cakesâ âJesseâs Girlâ cupcake. Bakery owner Kim McNutt reached out to Matthew and offered to create a fundraising cupcake for her team, which raises money for the Western New England Walk Now For Autism Speaks, set for Sept. 26 at Stanley Park. âLast year, Mama Cakes donated cupcakes to our princess tea party fundraiser and said they would do it again

this year,â Matthew said. âThen Kim said sheâd like to do a special cupcake for us.â For every Jesseâs Girl cupcake sold in April â Autism Awareness Month â Team Jesse James will receive $1. The cupcakes come in vanilla or chocolate with blue frosting and an edible blue puzzle piece on top. Walk Committee Co-Chair Monica Donnelly of West Springfield joined the delicious fun yesterday at Mama Cakes and said she, too, was overwhelmed by all the support and people wearing blue for autism awareness. âI went to town hall in West Springfield today for a proclamation and not only were all the staff wearing blue, they gathered for a photo to show their support,â said Donnelly. Last year, the walk committee made awareness and advocacy a priority, something Donnelly said she could really see yesterday by all the people wearing blue and posting to social media. âPeople are really as excited about Light It Up Blue as we are â and theyâre getting creative, too!â she said. âI feel like all our hard work last year is really paying off, but thereâs more work to do.â Also a mother of two with a son with ASD, Donnelly said she was thrilled to visit Mama Cakes for the first time and planned to become a frequent customer. âThere are seven families here with kids on the spectrum, everyone is having fun and running around, and the staff isnât blinking an eye,â she said. âIt really feels like a celebration.â At Southwick Town Hall, municipal employees participated in a Dress Down & Blue fundraiser for team Ryanâs Rally For Autism and it wasnât just the employees who participated.

Council approves DPW consolidation, director By DAN MORIARTY Staff Writer WESTFIELD â The City Council voted 10-2 to approve the consolidation of several municipal departments, responsible for maintaining the cityâs infrastructure, into one Public Works organization. The vote belies the uneasiness of several councilors who voted for the ordinance amendment and the two who voted against the organizational consolidation. Ward 1 Councilor Christopher Keefe voted against the amendment, but said he would do so because he favors decentralized government where departments report to several boards and commissions. âThere is nothing fundamentally wrong with the (amendment),â Keefe said. âIt just goes against my principles. I have issues with centralization of authority.â At-large Councilor Cindy Harris has voted against any measure which create new positions in city government. âThe taxpayers who have talked to me do not support adding five new positions,â Harris, who also voted against transferring $30,000 from the Purchasing Department to the mayorâs staffing budget to hire a See Council, Page 3
Midstate Berkshire lays off 70 workers WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) â A central Maine manufacturer of precision parts for the aerospace, defense and oil industries is cutting 70 workers and consolidating its Waterville and Winslow facilities. Midstate Berkshire, based in Westfield, Mass., said the cuts are necessary because of a downturn in the companyâs key markets and an effort to remain competitive. CEO Duane Pekar says the company has seen a 30 percent decrease in key markets over the past year. Pekar said he was confident that with the reductions and other cost-cutting measures, the company will be positioned for growth when market conditions improve. The company had about 250 workers in Maine. See Layoffs, Page 3
