Humason files bill in reaction to Attorney General overreach BOSTON – On Saturday State Senator Don Humason filed a bill in response to Attorney General Maura Healey’s recent directive to firearm retailers regarding her new interpretation of the state’s ban on certain firearms in Massachusetts. “As a Legislator and a strong supporter of Massachusetts residents’ second amendment rights, I was very disappointed to learn about the Attorney General’s unclear and overreaching attempt to reinterpret the intention of the Legislature on this issue,” said Senator Don Humason. “As recently as 2014 we debated the state’s gun laws, and to my best recollection this concern was not expressed by a single member in either branch during that debate or the previous sixteen years the Legislature debated this issue.” See Humason, Page 3

Westfield Catholics traveling to Poland By DAN DESROCHERS Correspondent WESTFIELD—A group of Westfield Catholics left Friday to join an estimated two million others to celebrate World Youth Day with Pope Francis in Poland. The 10 Westfield residents are traveling to Krakow, Poland, for two weeks to celebrate World Youth Day and other festivities, while also traveling and experiencing several pieces of Catholic and Polish history. The group will be led by Father Piotr Calik, who is a native of Krakow and a priest at St. Thomas Parish in West Springfield. The group will be joining a larger portion of people from the Springfield Catholic Diocese. The trip cost each person around $3,000 to attend, which included food, room and board
and travel. Some of those going have been to other World Youth Day events, such as the last one that was celebrated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013. “I’m very excited for this trip because I know it will be very fulfilling for me,” said Jaquelyn Luna, a Westfield resident traveling with the group. “When I went the first time I was just reaching confirmation and I’ve gotten more active since then, so I feel that this trip will be much more inspiring and transformative for me.” Luna is traveling with seven other relatives, including her mother and two sisters. World Youth Day is an event that first began in 1985, and was created by Pope John Paull II. It has been celebrated every two or three years in various parts of the world, including Madrid,
Rome and Denver. The event, according to Luna, is meant to bring Catholic youths around the world together to central locations to serve a pilgrimage. They travel the areas, meet with fellow Catholics and “come closer to God and hear a message he has” for them. The group will be led by Calik, who was born and raised in Krakow and has several family members in the area. He said that he will do his best to be a tour guide since he knows the area. Among the places that will be visited by the group will be Auschwitz, and the estimated two million pilgrims will also spend an “evening under the stars,” celebrating their faith with each other on the tarmac of John Paul II International Airport Krakow–Balice.
Conserve North Pond project taking another step forward
SENATOR DON HUMASON
By GREG FITZPATRICK Correspondent SOUTHWICK –The fun-filled four-day event, Southwick Days, kicked off on Thursday night. Carnival rides, delicious food, and live music were flowing through the night as expected. Besides the usual activities Southwick Days has to offer, there was one particular organization that was on a mission of its own. Supporters of preserving North Pond on Congamond Lake, were present to show what the project
means to them. Conservation Commission Coordinator Dennis Clark expressed his thoughts. “As long as I’ve been on the Conservation Commission, this has been the number one priority,” said Clark. “Everybody on the commission is 100% in favor and realizes the value of preserving this crown jewel of Southwick.” John Whalley, who has developed the plan of finding matching donors to raise the money to preserve the land, will not rest until the goal is
reached. “I’m just determined to make this happen,” said Whalley. Several members of the Town of Southwick, including Clark and Whalley, have named the project “Conserve North Pond”. The official kickoff of “Conserve North Pond” was right in the midst of the festivities on Thursday night. A tent was set up with a long table, along with “Conserve North Pond” See North Pond, Page 3
Friends of Southwick Rail Trail make progress with new project By GREG FITZPATRICK Correspondent SOUTHWICK – A popular place for the local community to ride their bikes, run, or just walk, the Southwick Rail Trail has made a recent improvement.

The Friends of the Southwick Rail Trail announced that they would be restoring part of the mural under the bridge on the trail. In the past, there have been issues with the murals being covered by graffiti. Due to the graffiti, the Friends of the Rail Trail had to cover up some of the parts of the mural. “The fish figures were covered up entirely with the dark blue,” said Friends of the Rail Trail President Peter Heap. The temporary change was upgraded on Friday morning when a few members of the Friends of the Rail Trail were able to get together at the mural and continue their new project. Local artist, Susan Yates, who has done work for the Rail Trail in the past, continued her work of restoring parts of the mural on Friday. Along with Heap and a few other members of the Rail Trail, Yates was seen representing the trail in her bright green “Friends of the Rail Trail” shirt. Setting up her materials from one spot to the next under the bridge, Yates was eager to gear up her paint brush with the proper paint color and make progress with the project. See New Project, Page 8
