Southwick has new young adult librarian By HOPE E. TREMBLAY Staff Writer SOUTHWICK – Jacklyn Hart was named the new Southwick young adult librarian this week. Southwick Public Library Director Diane Caruso recommended Hart to the Board of Selectmen after vetting three candidates for the position. “All had library experience, met the minimum requirements and had experience working with teens,” Caruso said. “But Jacklyn has had a lot of work with teens.” Hart worked at the West Springfield Library as a page while earning her Masters in Library Science and came highly recommended. “She is well-rounded and has a great personality,” said Caruso. “I think the teens will relate to her, which is important.” Selectmen were concerned about Hart’s longevity since the last young librarian did not stay long.Caruso said Hart does not aspire to be a library director at this time or move on to another position. “She told me she wants to be a young adult librarian,” Caruso said The vote was unanimous to hire Hart. The Southwick Public library is located at 85 Feeding Hills Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesday 1 – 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., and closed Sundays.

Kennedy to receive state educator award By AMY PORTER Correspondent WESTFIELD – Patrick Kennedy, Westfield Public Schools’ secondary level lead music teacher, learned this week that he is being honored with the Lowell Mason Award from the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA). The prestigious award is presented annually to recognize members of MMEA who have been leaders in music education in Massachusetts. The award is named after 18th century musician and educator Lowell Mason, who became the first music teacher in a public school in America, and is known as the father of American music education. Mason is also known for the hymns that he wrote, including “Joy to the World,” “Nearer my God to Thee,” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” “I was speechless,” Kennedy said after he heard the news. “I never thought I would get it. The people I’ve seen get it over the years are people I’ve always admired.” One of those people was fellow Lowell Mason Award recipient Douglas Ward, Kennedy’s first band teacher and primary influence at Highland Elementary School, where he began his trumpet studies. Kennedy, a lifelong Westfield resident, said Ward was the father of the Westfield music program, “who really brought us into prominence in western Mass.” After graduating from Westfield High School, Kennedy earned a Bachelors of Music Education from Westfield State College in 1984,

By CHRISTINE CHARNOSKY Staff Writer WESTFIELD – It isn’t just tenants who need to be aware of rental schemes: landlords have to be careful, too. A city couple put an ad for their rental home on a Westfield State University website, according to police logs. WSU’s Department of Residential Life maintains a listing of off campus properties available in the area to students looking to live off campus, according to the university’s website. The couple placed an ad on January 8 for an apartment listed on White Street, according to the WSU website. Subsequently, the property owners corresponded with a female, claiming to be a WSU student, who was interested in renting the home. The couple agreed to accept one month’s rent ($800) as a deposit upfront with the rest due when the prospective tenant arrived, according to police logs. See Landlords, Page 5
