104th Fighter Wing deploys to Germany WESTFIELD – The 104th Fighter Wing deployed approximately 100 Airmen on Thursday to Ramstein and Spangdahlem Air Bases, Germany to integrate with the active-duty. “This trip is an excellent opportunity for our personnel to work with our active duty counterparts, strengthen our partnerships, and expand our expertise. The training opportunity enhances our deployment readiness as well as our ability to excel at our day-to-day mission,” said Col. Ann Ware, Commander of the 104th Fighter Wing Mission Support Group. This deployment gives wing members an opportunity to practice skill sets that may not be readily available at home station. The deployment is approximately two weeks long. The 104th FW is an operational flying unit assigned to the Air Combat Command, and proudly claims the honor of being one of the oldest flying units within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Recently the 104th received “Air Control Alert Unit of the Year” by the Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region – 1st Air Force (CONR-1AF/AFNORTH). A component of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR) provides airspace surveillance and control and directs aerospace control activities for the continental United States (CONUS). Tasked to provide operationally ready combat units, combat support units and qualified personnel for active duty, the 104th FW supports Air Force wartime contingency requirements and performs a variety of peacetime missions required by the Air Force and compatible mobilization readiness. One mission of the 104th is Aerospace Control Alert (ACA), providing armed fighters ready to scramble in a moment’s notice to protect the Northeast from any airborne threat. The unit is responsible for protecting a quarter of the nation’s population and one third of the Gross Domestic Product.
By AMY PORTER Correspondent WESTFIELD – On Thursday, May 11, the Massachusetts Senate Bill S. 735, an Act relative to transgender anti-discrimination, sometimes called “the bathroom bill” passed with 33 yeas, and 4 nays. The bill added the words “gender identity” to the following paragraph: “Any public accommodation including, without limitation, any entity that offers the proviSEN. HUMASON sion of goods, services, or access to the public that lawfully segregates or separates access to such public accommodation, or other entity, based on a person’s sex shall grant all persons admission to, and the full enjoyment of, such public accommodation, or other entity, consistent with the person’s gender identity.” The four nay votes were cast by four of the five republicans in the Senate, including Senator Donald F. Humason, Jr. (R-Westfield), the Minority Whip. The sole republican to vote for the bill was Rep. Mark D. Pacheco (D-Taunton). State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D – Pittsfield), who filed the Transgender Equal Rights Bill which was signed into law in 2011, said in a press release Friday that the new bill provides equal access to public places for every resident of the Commonwealth, regardless of gender identity. Public accommodations include but are not limited to restaurants, nursing homes, coffee shops, grocery stores, and sports arenas. “The Senate did the right thing SEN. DOWNING today,” said Downing. “This has all been a long time coming; the work we did to guarantee transgender individuals protection from discrimination in terms of employment and housing two sessions ago, while imperative in its own right, was finally able to cross the finish line today by safeguarding the most basic rights of every person to exist as his or herself See The Bathroom Bill, Page 8
