will be holding its fifth annual Alzheimer’s Benefit Gala at the Log Cabin on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 5:30 PM. The festivities will include live entertainment, great food, and wonderful raffles. Entertainment will include Sarah the Fiddler, Decades and Now’s the Time Jazz Sextet. Our host for the evening will be the lovely Ashley Kohl. We will also feature the sale of artwork created by residents of Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Communities that are located throughout Western Massachusetts. This part of the program—“Painting the Face on Alzheimer’s”—will include art that was created using the “memories method.” This method focuses on the process of creating by encouraging self-expression through art among those facing dementia. For these individuals, the axiom that “a picture is worth a thousand words” rings true as their ability to communicate in traditional ways may decrease but the need to communicate remains. This year we are honoring Beth Cardillo for the impact she has made in raising awareness about the effects of dementia on individuals, families and entire communities in Western Mass. Over the past 14 years Beth’s efforts have resulted in significant funds for the Alzheimer’s Association as well as the development of programs and initiatives including the Virtual Dementia Experience and

Sunday. April 14, 2019 - 7
Baseball is America’s Game and Westfield is known as a baseball town, a “badge of honor” that is earned, so how did it start? The game was not invented by Abner Doubleday, instead it evolved and 19th century Westfield helped to shape the game we love. This presentation will cover our earliest days of “pre-baseball”, the pride and passion of our town teams and Westfield’s first two hometown MLB players. Presented by Dan Genovese, author and historian of Westfield baseball history, winner of the 2010 Westfield Historical Commission’s Annual Preservation Award and Captain and Re-Founder of the Westfield Wheelmen Base Ball Club. 866 Shaker Rd., Westfield, MA (413) 568-4087 www.shakerfarmscc.com Downtown Westfield Seeking 350th Inspired Utility Box Muralists Westfield on Weekends has issued a Call to Artists for a unique place-making opportunity in Downtown. WOW is searching for artists to submit their ideas and designs to beautify three utility boxes located in the Gaslight District, in order to increase walkability and infuse the streetscape with accessible art during Westfield’s 350th Birthday celebration on May 18-19. The two existing boxes, with the theme of “Celebrate Westfield” are located in front of Fast Feet and the Olver PVTA station Downtown. Programs to create nonconventional murals are not new; cities such as Boston, Northampton, and Easthampton have all carried out similar beautification programs in their cities, to great success. WOW is funding this program through a Westfield Cultural Council grant. The three boxes to be painted in 2019 are located in front of Blue Umbrella Books, Baystate Dental, and Stop and Shop. They will be painted

Applications are due April 22, and are available online, or by contacting Ms. Drewniany. Westfield on Weekends is a nonprofit transforming Westfield at the intersection of community and creativity. We work to increase the scope of arts, cultural, and economic life along the Elm Street corridor to make the city a better place for residents, businesses, and visitors The request for proposal and more details on this program can be found at WestfieldOnWeekends.Com/ Utility-Box-Painting-Project. html. Capturing and storing water at the home and the use of rain gardens are the two most effective ways to use rain water. Saving rain water helps homeowners save money. Rain water is free, and it’s an excellent water source for plants, gardens, lawns and any other non-potable use. One tenth of an inch of rain on a 1000 square foot roof --about 25 minutes of moderate rainfall-- will fill a 60-gallon Rain Barrel. New England typically receives 17” of rain during the growing season from May through September. This provides enough water to fill 170 Rain Barrels. Droughts stress residential landscaping and town water facilities. In 2016, 168 communities in Massachusetts faced restrictions on nonessential outdoor water use -
47% of the Cities and Towns in the state. There is no restriction on rainwater use. Westfield chose to work with the Great American Rain Barrel Co., a local food importing company that has been repurposing shipping drums into Rain Barrels since 1988. Last year 30% of Massachusetts Cities and Towns partnered with The Great American Rain Barrel Co, selling over 3000 barrels. Great American Rain Barrel Co has been approved ven-
