Gateway Alumni sought for “Where are they now?” series Attention Gateway Alumni! We are reviving a series of articles, led in the early 2000’s by alum and then Gateway teacher Janine Modestow, called “Gateway Alumni: Where Are They Now?” A brief, online survey has been set up for any who are interested in taking part. You can find the link on the Gateway website (www.grsd.org) under “quick links” or on the Gateway Regional MA Alumni Facebook page. Those selected for the series will view a draft of their profile before it is published on the Alumni Facebook page, in local media and in Gateway’s weekly e-newsletter, Breaking News. We will request a head shot (selfies are fine!) to accompany each article.

CAMP

Shaker Farms Country Club is hosting a Summer Sports Clinic!

July 9th - August 10th

How to Prevent Homesickness at Camp...

for children ages 8-12

Participants will rotate through a variety of sports: • Golf • Tennis • Volleyball • Geocashing on the bike path • Collaborative Games

Tips to help kids avoid being homesick when they head off to summer camp.

It’s a difficult and anxious decision: should you sign your child up for an overnight summer camp? You want them to have a wonderful first experience, but you can’t get one thing off your mind: homesickness. You dread that middle of the night phone call with your child in begging to be picked up. Well, take a deep breath, less than 1 percent of all children at overnight camps have to be picked up early. Of course, it is possible to be homesick without getting to the point of needing to come home. But for those of you thinking “but what if my kid is in that one percent?!” here are tips that will help with feelings of homesickness.

The Sports Clinic Runs Weekly, Monday - Friday from 8:30 - 1:00pm. ~ A Fruit or Vegetable Snack Provided Daily ~ Participants may bring their own lunch or purchase on-site

200.00 per week • $175.00 for 2 weeks or more ~ Limited Space ~ Call 413-568-4087 to Enroll Today

Make Sure They Are Ready

Deciding whether or not your child is ready for an overnight camp can be the hardest decision of all. Kids are ready when they start asking about camp and when they have no trouble with overnights at friends’ houses. As a good rule of thumb, most 8 and 9-year-olds are ready for a 2-week camp, if they have spent some nights away from home and been okay.

EXPRESS YOUR SELF

Have Them Choose the Camp

The chances of homesickness will be greatly lowered if they’re at a camp with enough fun and activity to keep their mind off home. And what’s the easiest way to find a camp that is the right fit for your child? Involve them in the camp selection process and it’s likely the camp will be one they’ll enjoy.

CAMP

Sign Up with a Friend -- If They Want

Talk to the parents of your kid’s close friends, or have them talk to their friends themselves, and find out who else is considering an overnight camp. If you find a friend or two who your child wants to go to camp with, coordinate with the parents to sign them up together. Having a friend at overnight camp can make a tremendous difference.

Be Positive at Drop-off

Okay, so you chose a camp, drove your child there, unpacked their gear and now it’s time to say goodbye. This can be the most difficult part as a parent and for your child. It is important for parents to stay happy and composed. You should never ever say, if you feel homesick, I’ll come and get you. Stay away from putting the idea of homesickness in your child’s head as you say your goodbyes.

You’ll probably All materials & firings included. want to check in with your child after a few $250 per week days, but try to resist! The smartest and most enlightened thing that camps can do is to encourage letter writing and only letter writing. Talking on the phone is not a cure for homesickness. It makes it worse. Only staff should call parents. From the child’s point of view, hearing your voice on the phone can make them stop and think about you and home, so it’s possible a phone call could cause homesickness! The last thing to remember on this topic is that being homesick at an overnight camp is just part of growing up. You were probably homesick at least to some extent at some point in your childhood. If you learn your kid is homesick, don’t panic. Your child doesn’t have a broken bone, he simply misses the things he loves about home. It’s perfectly normal and he’ll be stronger at the end of the camp.

Summer provides a great opportunity to be together and active as a family. Finding things to do is not as hard as you might think. Below are eight fun activities that my family came up with to share with you, with options for all ages.

CAMP

Get wet. Whether it’s the beach, the lake, or the local pool, water activities are fun and use all the muscle groups. For a break from traditional swimming, play games with water toys, have races with foam “noodles” or swim rings, or use kick boards to move around. Children of all ages and swimming abilities can participate with the proper safety equipment and supervision. The sprinkler in the backyard is another fun way to get wet and fit as you run and jump in the water spray.

fitness. When the boys were younger we pushed the stroller while skating. It’s a great upper body workout. Now, we all skate together. Bike riding on trails, in parks, and in the neighborhood is a great option, too.

The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Libraries Lead”. In April, the Southwick Public Library conducts an annual survey. This year your input is particularly important as we start working on the library’s 5-Year Strategic Plan. How do you envision the library 5 years from now? Surveys will be available at the library and on its website starting on April 2nd–April 31st. You may pick-up your survey at the Circulation Desk or print a copy from the library’s website www.southwickma.org/library. The survey will be found under News and Announcements. If you return your completed survey during National Library Week, you will receive a small gift.
