Motorcycle Blessing WESTFIELD - The blessing of motorcycles will take place this coming Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 10 am at the St. Joseph’s Clinton Avenue parking lot. Dunkin Donuts and coffee is free to all participants. In case of rain, the blessing will be held on Sunday, May 6 at 10:00 am.
Coin show planned WEST SPRINGFIELD - Local coin collectors will have an opportunity to expand their collections—or learn more about the coins they already have—when the West Springfield Coin Club stages their semi-annual coin show on Sunday, April 29. The club has staged coin shows, twice a year, at the Dante Club (across the street from the Big E at 1198 Memorial Drive) since 1988, according to club president Peter Setian who said at least 21 of the site’s 22 available tables have already been sold for this spring’s show. The vendors will buy and sell a wide variety of U. S. and foreign coins and collectibles, will appraise coins brought to the show and share their specialized expertise with visitors. Patrons of past shows who contributed their addresses were
To Advertise Call 413-562-4181 sent postcards notifying them of the upcoming show and recipients are reminded to bring the postcards with them to claim a pick from a grab bag of vintage U.S. coins which includes a Morgan silver dollar. There will also be a raffle offered at the show. The show will open at 9:30 a.m. and will continue until about 3 p.m. Setian said that both admission to the show and parking at the Dante Club are free. The club meets monthly, with a summer hiatus during July and August, at the Mittineague Congregational Church, 1840 Westfield Street. The meetings are generally staged on the second Sunday of the month. The remaining meetings of 2018 will be on May 20, June 10, September 9, Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9. At each meeting, a program about a specific aspect of coin collecting is offered after the club’s business is conducted. Following a social break, members offer a small number of coins for sale at an auction.

Barrett proposing state-wide carbon fee and rebate legislation, and an omnibus bill by State Sen. On Thursday, May 10, the Gateway Regional High School Music Department will host their annual Spring Concert. Join the bands and choirs in the Gateway Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. for a performance that showcases the high school’s many talented students! This year’s concert includes the band performing an original student composition and a musical instrument drive to help students who want to join the band, but don’t have access to an instrument. In addition to playing well established Concert Band repertoire, members of the concert band will perform a piece composed by senior Dawson Atkin, titled “Four Skillful Brothers”. This piece is the final of four movements in Atkin’s “Fairytale Suite for Wind Band”, an elaborate piece that Atkin composed over the course of six months! The suite takes influence from several fairytale stories including: Little Red Riding Hood, the Red Dancing Shoes, Sleeping Beauty, and Four Skillful Brothers. Every note reflects the prowess and thought required to arrange a piece of art. Atkin recently committed to Hartt School at University of Hartford where he plans to pursue music composition. Jazz Band will perform music by Chick Corea, Rich Hirsch and Stevie Wonder. Several vocal ensembles and choirs will perform, with the award-winning male singers performing “Tinted Shades” and our female trio (of Thunderbirds’ National Anthem fame) performing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. Concert Choir’s program includes music from Beauty and the Beast, and Show Choir performing an Old Time Rock ‘n Roll dance medley and singing “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story” from Hamilton. Preschool Screening and registration for the fall Free, developmental screenings for young children will be held at Littleville Elementary School in the afternoon on May 21 and in the morning on May 24. The deadline for signing up for a preschool screening is Wednesday, May 16; please call Karen Malinowski at 6851017 for a time slot. Any child age three (by May 24, 2017) to five who will not be entering Kindergarten in September, may attend a screening. The screening is for children who live in the Gateway hilltowns (Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery and Russell). Children must live in the district; school choice does not apply to preschool. Children who are already enrolled in a Gateway preschool program do not need to participate in screening/registration. In the 2018-19 school year, Gateway will offer free morning or afternoon preschool sessions at Littleville and Chester Elementary Schools, Tuesday through Friday. In addition, Gateway is offering a new, free, full day preschool option, Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. – 3:20 p.m. at Gateway Middle/High School. Families enrolled in the full day program will have the option of paying for before and after school care at Littleville’s Wrap Around Program. Children must take part in a screening in order to be part of half-day or full day preschool next year. Screenings are by appointment only and will take approximately one hour. Preschool screenings are given to identify any concerns that parents might have about their child’s development. Additionally, whether there are concerns or not, screening is a requirement for registration in a Gateway preschool program. Screenings include a brief check of skills in the following areas: cognitive/thinking skills, speech and language skills, fine and gross motor skills, social/emotional skills and preschool readiness skills. In addition, parents are asked to fill out a questionnaire; no additional paperwork is needed at the screening. Parents will be notified in writing about the screening results by mid-June, and any next steps will be recommended. A Preschool Parent Information Night for families who wish to learn more about Gateway’s Integrated Preschool Program has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 8 from 6 – 7 p.m. at Littleville. Free childcare will be provided. Because demand for preschool often exceeds the number of eligible slots in the program, a lottery is drawn to determine preschool students. Lottery applications for the 2018-2019 will be available at the Preschool Screenings. Parents will be notified by mid-June if their child is accepted for enrollment. A screening is required whether or not parents have a developmental concern.

AHLEM TEMPLE NO 84 PATROL UNIT launches Shoe Collection Drive to raise money for Daughters of the Nile WESTFIELD — Ahlem Temple No 84 Patrol Unit is conducting a shoe collection drive on April 15 – June 14 to raise funds for Ahlem Temple Patrol. Ahlem Temple No 84 Patrol Unit organization will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will benefit Ahlem Temple No 84. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Robin Johnson’s home at 75 Highland Av, Westfield, MA. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. By donating shoes to the Ahlem Temple No 84 Patrol Unit, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives.
Country Music Salutes our Armed Forces WESTFIELD — Nashville recording artist Ayla Brown and King Kountry’s Ray Guillemette will perform on May 18 at East Mountain Country Club, 1458 E Mountain Rd, Westfield, from 7-11pm. This event is hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Military Order of the Purple Heart. Amanda Jo of Kix 100.9 will MC the event. Tickets are $15.00 in advance, $20 at the door. All proceeds from the event will benefit Western Mass veterans and their families. www.countrysalutes.eventbrite.com.
