Tuesdays on the Trail Join the Friends of the Columbia Greenway for a casual ride on the trail. Riders will meet at 6pm at the Main St. trail ramp (Stop & Shop) for a ride to Shaker Farms and back. If riders prefer a shorter distance, they may turn around at any point and head back. Similarly, if riders prefer a longer distance, they may continue further south on the trail. These rides will occur each Tuesday evening during July and August.

Huntington Public Library Summer Reading Program The Huntington Public Library’s Summer Reading Program “Build A Better World” runs from now to August 19th. North Hall Arts Festival announces 2017 season The North Hall Arts Festival in Huntington, Mass. announces its 2017 season with twelve public events from late May through September. Presented by the North Hall Association, the performance series is made possible by the Westfield News Group and the Daily Hampshire Gazette, along with support from the arts councils of Chester, Huntington, Montgomery, Russell, Westhampton, and Worthington. A second Festival theater

offering this season follows, with a staged reading of LOVE LETTERS by A. R. Gurney Directed by Mitch Giannunzio and performed by Kenneth Tigar and Margery Shaw. This free event will take place on Sunday, August 20, 2 pm. In September, the popular area piano-clarinet duo Jerry Noble and Bob Sparkman (jazz-swing) returns to North Hall on September 10, Sunday at 2 pm. The Old Country Road Band ends the season with old-time vintage country and bluegrass on Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. Events include two free open-mic music jams, art exhibits, and meet-the-artist receptions. Some events are free or by donation. Admission to ticketed events is from $10 to $15 at the door. Student/youth admission is free for all events. All performances take place at Historic North Hall, 40 Searle Road (off Route 66), Huntington. The performance space is wheelchair-accessible and air-conditioned. Allen Bird Club August Birding Trips The Allen Bird Club has a number of birding trips in August and anyone interested is invited to participate including beginners. Bring binoculars if you have them. On Saturday, August 12, there will be a full-day trip by car pool to the Massachusetts coast to look for shorebirds, waders and ducks. A 3-hour trip is scheduled on Saturday, August 26, in the Longmeadow and Agawam area, to look for songbirds and water birds. There will be an evening watch for migrating Nighthawks at Longmeadow Flats late in August, with the date to be announced. The Westfield Fair Hosts 62nd Westfield Fair/ Pioneer Valley MA Pageant The Westfield Fair has a long-standing tradition of hosting the Westfield Fair/ Pioneer Valley Pageant. The pageant is celebrating its 62nd year with the Westfield Fair and it is the second year of new management, with Pageant Director, Kim Starsiak & Assistant Pageant Director, Christie BorelliGromaski. This year, the pageant is being held on the Westfield Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 19, 2017, starting at 9AM through 3PM. Depending on the delegate category, delegates will have the opportunity to compete in the following areas: formalwear, sportswear, talent (ages 4& up), photogenic, and/or a written essay (Mrs. Pioneer Valley only). The Westfield Fair/Pioneer Valley Ma Pageant is extending competition to any male resident from the 4 Western Massachusetts counties. Junior Mr. Pioneer Valley is for young men ages 12 & under, and Mr. Pioneer Valley is for any male of ages 13 & up. He graduated Boston College with a B.A. in History and an M.Ed in Secondary Education. He is 2012 graduate of the Naval War College in Newport, RI with a M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies. He is currently an 8th grade U.S. History teacher in Newton, Massachusetts. Lieutenant Colonel Matthews lives in Westfield, Massachusetts with his wife of 22 years, Bridget, and their four chil-

Car show at Food Fest WESTFIELD – Automobile aficionados will be able to feast their eyes – as well as their taste buds – at the third annual Rotary Food Fest which will be staged on the weekend of Aug. 25-26 in downtown Westfield. For the first time, the Food Fest will include a car show which will bring as many as 50 vintage and customized cars to Elm Street which will be closed to vehicular traffic from School Street to Franklin Street for the event. Visitors to the Food Fest will be able to get an upclose and personal looks at stunning examples of the cars

of yesterday and today as the owners of the cars show off their treasures and compete for prizes. The car show is a new addition to the Food Fest (now in it’s third year) sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield. The free two day event will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and close for the night at 10 p.m. The street festival will resume on Saturday at noon and will will feature food and drink from local restaurants and food trucks as well as entertainment from local musicians. Rotarian Jennifer Gruszka, a co-chair of this year’s festival, said the goal of the event is “to showcase local businesses as well as the downtown area.” The

Westfield Rotarians will be selling beer and wine to adults at the festival which will enjoy live coverage from local FM radio station WSKB. Gruszka said that proceeds from the event will be returned to the community by the club in the form of grants for service projects which promote Rotary’s areas of focus. As space to display cars is limited on Elm Street only the first 50 registrants will be able to participate in the car show. The site will open to participants at 11 a.m. and all cars must be in place when the Food Fest resumes at noon. The car show will continue until 3 p.m. although

the Food Fest will not end until 10 p.m. Car owners who wish to participate or learn more about the car show are encouraged to send an email to foodfestcars@gmail.com.
