supporting diverse cultural events and programming within Westfield to serve on the Council beginning in late 2018. This all-volunteer organization is appointed by the mayor and is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Council members make decisions on awarding annual grants, and take part in promoting the arts and humanities in town. In FY18, the council awarded nearly $20,000 in grants to support community-wide programming in a range of creative fields, spanning the natural sciences to fine arts. A list of past grantees and guidelines can be found at https://www. mass-culture.org/westfield. The next grant cycle will open in fall 2018, at which time, individuals, nonprofits, unincorporated organizations, public schools, and religious organizations are invited to apply for funds to assist in producing or continuing arts, humanities, or science centered programs that take place within Westfield city limits. Council members will be present at this regular meeting to hold a discussion and answer questions, as well as to hear feedback from the community on what they would like to see funding allocated for. The council takes feedback from the public on a yearly basis to ensure grant money is given to projects that benefit the public good.

wholly of Westfield performers. On Aug. 17th Jon Adams, Kim O’Brien and their band, Kitty Does Country, will bring their high energy modern country show to the stage. Kitty Does Country was an unexpected but highly successful spin off from Jon’s earlier band, Bad Little Kitty. Maybe Jon finds a way to sneak his steel drums into a tune here and there! On Aug. 24th Bill Curran, Doug Cotton and the rest of Whitaker Hill will bring good ol’ classic rock, expertly delivered, to the crowd. The Downtown Taste will be going on that evening and for the whole weekend, so food, fun and music will abound. On Aug. 31st the summer long series comes to a close with Bernie Dion and his fantastic (mostly) family band, Whiskey Traveler. This band has established a reputation for tightness, excellent musicianship, and star quality vocals. The set list is mostly modern country with splashes of other contemporary genres. Downtown Live! farm-to-table dinner on Sunday, August 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Horace Mann Center located at 333 Western Avenue in Westfield. Titled “Dinner at Henry’s Garden,” the event honors the late Dr. Henry Wefing, professor emeritus of communication, who served the University for 30 years. Proceeds will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2016. The menu will feature locally-sourced ingredients. Menu options include eggplant rollatini, BLT deviled eggs, and braised beef tostadas for appetizers; grilled chicken with peaches or leg of lamb with chimichurri sauce for dinner; and cornmeal shortcakes with mixed berries and stone fruit for dessert. Diners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry. Today, the garden is maintained by volunteers, including faculty, staff and students. At the event, sponsored by the Westfield News Group, food will be prepared by Westfield State Dining Services Executive Chef Mary Reilly, a gold medalist in a recent American Culinary
Federation-sanctioned culinary competition. She is a frequent guest on WWLP’s Mass Appeal, the publisher of Edible Pioneer Valley and the co-author of Home Sausage Making (Storey Press, 2017). A portion of the dinner will be prepared outside on site and Reilly will be available to meet guests, answer questions, and discuss the food and the importance of using locallysourced ingredients. The event aligns with the University’s commitment to provide local, sustainable food to its campus community. In 2016, Westfield State launched a self-operating dining services system based on a farm-to-fork model. Today, Westfield State Dining Services partner with more than 30 local farmers and food producers. Dinner tickets are $45 and must be purchase in advance, as seating is limited and last year’s dinner sold out quickly. To purchase tickets or view the full menu, visit www.westfieldalumni.org/ farmtotable. For more information or to discuss dietary needs, contact Suzanne Boniface, adjunct professor of communication at 413478-2652 or sboniface@ westfield.ma.edu.

Wood Badge Reunion to Celebrate 70th Anniversary Wood Badge alumni and their guests are invited to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the first American course at a reunion picnic on Sunday, August 26. The picnic will be from 1 to 5 PM at the Horace Moses Scout Reservation in Russell, MA. Wood Badge is an advanced leadership and management course that includes 6 full days of instruction and practice followed by completion of agreed to goals utilizing skills learned over several months. Topics covered are the same as trainings many local companies invest in for their employees. The Western Massachusetts Council, Boy Scouts of America expects alumni who completed their Wood Badge training both in western Massachusetts and in other councils to come “Back to Gilwell” to enjoy historical exhibits and look back at this important Scouting training

program. Gilwell, England, was where the first Wood Badge training was held in 1919, and where several traditions used around the world today originated. When Wood Badge requirements that include practical application of leadership and management skills are completed a taupe neckerchief with McLaren tartan patch, a leather woggle, and 2 wooden beads are presented. These are the same recognition used in 1919. The first course in the United States ran from July 31 to August 8 in 1948 at the Schiff Scout Reservation in northern New Jersey. Since then, the course materials have evolved and today are focused on modern leadership and management skills. The core skills and delivery methods are also used in the week long “National Youth Leadership Training” (NYLT) for Scout, Venturer, and Explorer youth registered in those Boy Scouts of America programs. The Western Massachusetts Council will offer Wood Badge again in October 2019 and NYLT is offered every

has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore.
But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
