one part-time employee and about 35 dedicated volunteers. The financial hardship faced by people who come to the Pantry often means that they need more than just the food we provide. In response, we recently expanded our services to include processing applications for SNAP (formerly

known as food stamps) and MassHealth. We are also able to assist with other challenges, such as finding housing or employment, and pursuing education. I would like to share with you the story of one Westfield resident whom we recently helped: The service this pantry provides is vital for our community. To provide the hundreds of thousands of meals we give to needy families every year we must raise approximately $80,000 each year to keep the doors open. On September 19 ,we are partnering with Westfield State University to raise awareness and the necessary funds to see us through 2014. An evening of Tapas and Tango on the Horace Mann Terrace will commence at 7:00 pm. Sunset tours of the community garden, student entertainment, enriching

Westfield Bank Supports Stanley Park WESTFIELD - For many years Westfield Bank has generously supported Stanley Park helping to keep Mr. Beveridge’s vision alive and the Park a place for all to enjoy. Stanley Park turns 65 years old this August. The support from Westfield Bank has helped Stanley Park sustain these beautiful grounds for our community and surrounding communities open to all to enjoy, free of charge. Right to left in the above picture is James Hagan, Westfield Bank President and CEO presenting a donation grant to Robert McKean, Stanley Park Managing Director. Along with the beautiful grounds, Stanley Park also provides many programs; many sponsored by the Westfield Bank. Some of these programs include, Sunday Night Concerts, children’s programming, the construction and naming rights to a children’s pavilion and funding toward the construction of a new performance and event Pavilion to replace the 60 year old Beveridge Pavilion that was razed due to structural deterioration and safety. Sunday Night Concerts have been a favorite past time for many to attend quality, live musical performances, bringing together audiences that span all ages. Our Friday Mornings for Children ignites the imagination, creativity, and musical spirit of our children through expressive activities and performances. The Zoo allows children to learn about animals and their natural habitat and more. The pavilions continue to be used and enjoy by all groups; whether a birthday party, family picnic, company picnic, award banquets, wedding receptions, varieties of organizations fundraising events, and many other types of events. Stanley Park is a private non-profit organization, open to the public, free of charge. Stanley Park, the Beveridge Family Foundation, the Westfield community and surrounding communities are very grateful to Westfield Bank for its continued support.

Continued from Page 11 is experiencing extreme weather conditions. There's no need to worry about how hot or cold your home will be. Special apps allow you to control the temperature settings on the thermostat from your smartphone or tablet, so your home's temperature will be just the way you like it when you arrive. These capabilities are also eco-friendly, allowing users to regulate the temperature while the home is unoccupied, which can mean big savings on energy bills. Let a little sunlight in Until recently, motorized window shades were a luxury only the rich and famous could enjoy - that is until smartphone technology came into play. With the touch of a finger, homeowners can now adjust their curtains and the natural light streaming into their rooms with one of several applications. These special systems even allow you to set a schedule for opening your shades, so you can wake up to natural light every morning. Bringing convenience home With the busy daily schedules today's families must manage, everyone can use some convenience from time to time. Here are some ways technology makes life at home a little easier: Program favorites with ease Have you ever misplaced your television's remote control? Do you have a hard time remembering to record your favorite television programs before leaving the house? Both of these problems can be solved with your phone. By downloading an app to connect to your smart TV, you can instantly turn your phone into a remote control. This allows you to schedule your favorite show and film recordings from anywhere. Save time in the kitchen and beyond Standard kitchen appliances are getting a technological upgrade. Cooks can now save time with apps that allow them to preheat, monitor food as it cooks and turn off the

oven all from their phone. Many other appliances, such as washers and dryers, are also on board with connectivity. New apps allow homeowners to check laundry cycles and receive alerts when their clothes are clean and dry. Safe and secure living Protecting one's family and belongings is important to every homeowner. Luckily, technology makes it easy to monitor these valuables no matter where you are. Here are some ways you can add safety

to your home with your handy smartphone or tablet device: Monitor your garage from anywhere Since opening and closing the garage door is so much a part of your daily routine, it's often hard to remember if it was closed. The many families who use their garage as the main door to their home can now have peace of mind. Designed to work with a free smartphone app, MyQ Garage by Chamberlain works with the majority of garage door openers installed after 1993 and uses your home's existing Wi-Fi, allowing you to open your garage door from anywhere. Are you afraid you left the garage door open as you left for work this morning or somehow it has been opened unexpectedly? The handy MyQ app sends automatic notifications to your smartphone when the door opens or closes, so you won't have to go back home to check. Plus, the MyQ Garage can be installed in just minutes with no wiring required. For more information, visit www.chamberlain. com.

Keeping an eye on things Frequent travelers and businesspeople will love the remote monitoring capabilities available from various home security providers. With a few taps on your device, you can monitor your home from any location. This can even mean checking on Fido while out running errands. Flip the switch When traveling, many people leave lights on inside their

homes to deter thieves. Some smart apps allow you to control various lighting sources within your home through your smartphone or tablet. Now you won't have to beg your neighbor to house sit while you're away. Do you have a forgetful family member who always leaves on the lights? Save energy and money with the ability to turn off those lights from anywhere.

Small oil loss is likely not worth fixing BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica Touring with 39,000 miles on it. The car apparently uses oil without smoking or leaking. What could it be? -Loretta RAY: It could be smoking or leaking, Loretta. TOM: There are no other choices, except larceny. RAY: According to the principles of industrial stoichiometry, whatever goes in has to

either stay in or come out. And that's true for the oil in your crankcase. TOM: It's possible for either situation to be difficult to detect. If it's leaking very slowly, you might be leaking a few drops per mile every day between your house and the bingo parlor. RAY: Or it could be leaking onto your hot exhaust manifold and burning up, rather than dripping onto your driveway. TOM: Just as likely, it's sneaking past the piston rings when the engine is running, and is getting burned up and sent out the tailpipe. But in that case, it's a small-enough amount that you don't smell it, or see the telltale bluish-gray smoke. RAY: Yet. TOM: Right. Yet. So the first question is: How much oil are you actually losing? RAY: If you're replacing less than a quart every 500 miles, my advice would be to forget about it. TOM: The expense of rebuilding your engine dwarfs the cost of a quart of oil once a month. You can do the math. An engine rebuild might cost you $4,000; a quart of oil is $2.

RAY: But don't forget about it entirely. Keep a close eye on the oil level in case your rate of consumption increases -- which probably will happen eventually. You don't want to run low on the stuff. TOM: And continue to get your oil changed at the prescribed intervals -- that will protect the engine parts that still work. Just dumping in new quarts to replace those that have leaked out or burned up does not constitute an oil change, because a lot of the sludgy oil stays in there. RAY: I'd start keeping a log of how often you add a quart. Write down the date and mileage reading -- that's useful

information. When you take your car for service, give those details to your mechanic, and ask him to take a look. If it turns out it's a leak, and it's caused by something simple like a valve cover gasket, you might as well fix it. That'd be a couple of hundred bucks, and the problem would be solved. TOM: But if your mechanic confirms that you're burning the oil, then our advice stands: Keep an eye on the oil level and keep driving. RAY: If you discover that you're burning more than a quart every 500 miles, then that's still our advice, but for See Car Talk, Page 17
