The Westfield State University Department of Communication will hold a farm-to-table dinner on Sunday, August 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Horace Mann Center located at 333 Western Avenue in Westfield. Titled “Dinner at Henry’s Garden,” the event honors the late Dr. Henry Wefing, professor emeritus of communication, who served the University for 30 years. Proceeds will benefit the Henry Wefing Journalism Scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2016. The menu will feature locally-sourced ingredients. Menu options include eggplant rollatini, BLT deviled eggs, and braised beef tostadas for appetizers; grilled chicken with peaches or leg of lamb with chimichurri sauce for dinner; and cornmeal shortcakes with mixed berries and stone fruit for dessert. Diners will be seated for dinner next to the garden Dr. Wefing planted in 2007. He used to donate the produce to the Westfield Food Pantry. Today, the garden is maintained by volunteers, including faculty, staff and students. At the event, sponsored by the Westfield News Group, food will be prepared by Westfield State Dining Services Executive Chef
Mary Reilly, a gold medalist in a recent American Culinary Federation-sanctioned culinary competition. She is a frequent guest on WWLP’s Mass Appeal, the publisher of Edible Pioneer Valley and the co-author of Home Sausage Making (Storey Press, 2017). A portion of the dinner will be prepared outside on site and Reilly will be available to meet guests, answer questions, and discuss the food and the importance of using locally-sourced ingredients. The event aligns with the University’s commitment to provide local, sustainable food to its campus community. In 2016, Westfield State launched a self-operating dining services system based on a farm-to-fork model. Today, Westfield State Dining Services partner with more than 30 local farmers and food producers. Dinner tickets are $45 and must be purchase in advance, as seating is limited and last year’s dinner sold out quickly. To purchase tickets or view the full menu, visit www. westfieldalumni.org/farmtotable. For more information or to discuss dietary needs, contact Suzanne Boniface, adjunct professor of communication at 413-478-2652 or sboniface@westfield.ma.edu.

Wood Badge Reunion to Celebrate 70th Anniversary Wood Badge alumni and their guests are invited to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the first American course at a reunion picnic on Sunday, August 26. The picnic will be from 1 to 5 PM at the Horace Moses Scout Reservation in Russell, MA. Wood Badge is an advanced leadership and management course that includes 6 full days of instruction and practice followed by completion of agreed to goals utilizing skills learned over several months. Topics covered are the same as trainings many local companies invest in for their employees. The Western Massachusetts Council, Boy Scouts of America expects alumni who completed their Wood Badge training both in western Massachusetts and in other councils to come “Back to Gilwell” to enjoy historical exhibits and look back at this important Scouting training program. Gilwell, England, was where the first Wood Badge training was held in 1919, and where several traditions used around the world today originated. When Wood Badge requirements that include practical application of leadership and management skills are completed a taupe neckerchief with McLaren tartan patch, a leather woggle, and 2 wooden beads are presented. These are the same recognition used in 1919. The first course in the United States ran from July 31 to August 8 in 1948 at the Schiff Scout Reservation in northern New Jersey. Since then, the course materials have evolved and today are focused on modern leadership and management skills. The core skills and delivery methods are also used in the week long “National Youth Leadership Training” (NYLT) for Scout, Venturer, and Explorer youth registered in those Boy Scouts of America programs.

A Salute to a South Worthington Character The South Worthington Church Association invites residents throughout the area to hear “A Salute to a South Worthington Character: The Legendary Jane Conwell Tuttle – Opera Singer, Author, Fortune-Teller,” on South Worthington Sunday (also known as Conwell Sunday), at 1:00 p.m. on August 26 at the old South Worthington (former Methodist) Church, just off Route 112 on Ireland Street, across from The Academy. Ms. Tuttle’s story intrigues: performances in European opera houses and for the troops during World War I, the
writing of a witty memoir, appearances as a fortune-teller at the local, annual church fair, and more. The South Worthington Church is opened for this special Sunday every year to honor our past and those who have helped form the character of the South Worthington Village. Cardio at the Westfield YMCA The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering the fastest growing group fitness phenomenon inspired by the sweat-dripping, infectious, energizing fun of drumming! POUND is a full body cardio jam session championed by fitness rebels around the world. Pound is the brainchild of Kirsten Potenza and Cristina Peerenboom, California-based former drummers who set out to fuse conditioning moves and cardio interval training with the distracting fun of drumming. Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out. Designed for all fitness levels, POUND® provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up and rockin’ out! The workout is easily modifiable and the alternative vibe and welcoming philosophy appeals to all abilities. MA will hold its annual Dozynki—Polish Harvest Festival on Sunday, September 9, 2018. The festival will be held from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at the parish social center and parish grounds, Main Street and Clinton Avenue, Westfield, MA. The Harvest Wreath, which will be blessed during the 8:00 am Mass that morning, will be carried in procession to the festival at 2:00 pm. A Dozynki program, highlighted by members of the St. Joseph’s Dozynki Dancers will perform traditional Polish folk dances. Polish music will be played during the duration of the festival. Our 2018 program will also include games for children and youth as well as the adults. New food additions and other surprises will be added to this year’s format. The Dozynki Kitchen will be open from noon until closing. Of course, we will have the Polish favorites—pierogi (both cheese and cabbage), golabki, kapusta, kielbasa, etc.—as well as American foods. There is no admission charge and the public is cordially invited. We celebrate Dozynki, a Polish Harvest Festival of Thanksgiving, and we are reminded of the old Polish traditions concerning the feast. A wreath, called either wieniec or snop, is blessed by the priest on that day. Women of the parish will prepare and decorate the mound-shaped wreath, which is made of many kinds of grain, herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables and is adorned with red and white ribbons. Two carriers, who represent the peasants, will bring the wreath to the festival and present it to all in attendance. Now that the harvest work is over, the dancing and feasting begin. Dozynki is a festival of praise and thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father for the goodness He has given us and it is a time to enjoy these gifts that He has given. The St. Joseph’s Dozynki Dancers is a group of young people from St. Joseph’s
Parish in Westfield. Mr. Trent Taylor, Chairman of the Parish Committee, and Very Rev. Joseph Soltysiak, pastor, extend a most cordial invitation to all to attend this year’s Dozynki. We assure you that you will have a most enjoyable family time.

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newpapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
