The goal of the Westfield Creative Arts Center is “to create a friendly, fun environment where students can learn new skills, explore untapped creativity, and meet new people and old friends,” according to Lester Walsh, a director of the Westfield Creative Arts Center. Classes are offered weekly with specific workshops scheduled throughout the year. Currently, the Creative Arts Center is forming classes in basket-making, chair caning, beginner knitting, advanced knitting cables and bobbles, rug hooking, and rug braiding. Sketching and painting classes in oil, watercolor, and pastels are also available. An exclusive workshop in stained glass is scheduled for December 7. “This beautiful city has so much to offer, and it was thought that a central place for folks to take fine arts and craft instruction would fit perfectly in Westfield,” said Gail Maciorowski, a director of the Westfield Creative Arts Center. The classes are not college-accredited but are open to the community to provide an opportunity to gain new skills and enjoy creating artwork using a variety of mediums. “The Westfield State University Downtown Art Gallery is expanding its horizons and introducing additional programming,” said curator Faith Lund. “We are very excited and look forward to our collaboration with the Westfield Creative Arts Center.” There is a membership fee of $50 per year, which translates into a $20 savings for each class taken throughout the year. Tuition for each class varies depending on the length and duration of the class. Students in the stained glass class will be able to use tools and glass provided by the instructors for a materials fee. Other classes that require supplies will have a materials list that students can obtain upon registering for the class. A full schedule of class dates and times will be posted on the WSU Art Gallery website at www.westfield.ma.edu/ offices-services/art-galleries/ downtown-art-gallery. For more information on the

SAVE WITH THE PENNYSAVER In her new book, just released from Balboa Press, a division of Hay House, Szepelak shares the revelations she received from angels one winter morning in February 2013 on her way to work. Szepelak is also the author of An Angel on My Shoulder which debuted in 2010. “While I was driving to work I asked my guardian angel to help me determine the message of my second book,” she said. “Almost immediately, I heard the words ‘floors of the forest,’ and then the need to educate individuals – especially young people - across the globe to work in concert with their guardian angel to help preserve Mother Earth.” Szepelak noted that she was intrigued by the title and the concept fit perfectly into her own lifestyle – being an avid hiker and scuba diver. “I incorporated messages I heard in the spring of 2013 from the angels with what I knew about the environment, as well as my personal experiences in nature, and soon the book came to fruition effortlessly,” she said. “The angels were also particular in stressing that young people need to be engaged now so I’m hopeful that teens especially will consider attending the lecture,” she said. Neighborhood Stores Help Community Shelters WESTFIELD -– Rocky’s Ace Hardware, a familyowned business with 32 neighborhood based stores is proud to announce their partnership with Nutro Pet Foods in joining together with its’ customers to help homeless and abandoned pets. The drive runs now through December 23. Each of the 32 Rocky’s Ace Hardware stores have partnered with an area Humane Society or Shelter to collect food this Holiday Season for the much forgotten and unfortunate animals in our own community. “The drive has become an annual tradition here at Rocky’s. It’s a fantastic opportunity for concerned individuals to help innocent animals without having to make a separate trip to their area Animal Shelter or Humane Society” said Rocco Falcone, president and CEO. Here is how the program works: Customers make donations of much needed pet food at their local Rocky’s Ace Hardware store, specially marked signs and a collection basket will guide customers to the collection area. The stores,
will then in turn collect all donations and drive them to their locally chosen charity. Nutro Pet Foods has partnered with Rocky’s in donating over $1,500 worth of premium dog and cat food to kick start the program. Donations will be delivered directly to the Shelter or Humane Society on or about December 24. Last year, the second annual pet food drive resulted in over 6,500 pounds of food and many toys, pet beds and
other needed accessories being donated to a long list of worthy humane societies and animal shelters. “This year our drive has been lengthened by one week, every year we increase the amount donated, thereby helping even more neglected animals, still, this year we will strive to surpass last years’ collection” said Director of Marketing and Advertising Geoffrey Webb. Please give generously.

communities by conducting service projects and raising funds to help those in need wherever need exists. Part of a worldwide organization of more than 1.5 million members, the Lions motto is “We Serve.” Lions Clubs across the state donate more than $1 million to Massachusetts Eye Research, but also conduct service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, community welfare, improved hearing, and work with those who are physically and mentally impaired. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion, but all have one thing in common: they enjoy helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Any resident interested in joining this local Lions Club is most welcome to come to a meeting as a guest to talk with others about the work of Lionism and get to know the benefits of becoming a member.

Third graders collecting for Soldier’s Home HUNTINGTON – Third grade students at Chester Elementary School have launched a collection of items to benefit the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke. Items are being collected by students and their families. Community members may leave donations at the school. “We kicked it off at our assembly on October 25, with a little skit about the project for the school,” noted third grade teacher Cindy Stokowski. “The kids have made posters to hang around the school, and are going into each classroom to explain the project.” A graph on the library window will mark the school’s progress in achieving their goal of collecting 100 items. In addition to providing a service to the community, the hands-on project offers students learning opportunities in art and design (poster making), English Language Arts (writing poster content, writing and performing a skit for the school, and writing speeches to present to each classroom) and mathematics (computing and charting the progress the class is making

rities and fashionistas with their glamorous hairstyles. Get the look, without appearing too retro, by using styling gel to work short hair into sculpted finger waves. Those with longer hair should sweep it up into a loose knot and add a thin headband. Give your nails some shine. Beautiful bracelets and rings will draw attention to your hands. Keep them looking beautiful with a fresh manicure and the right shade of polish. A perfect manicure will also set off the one holiday accessory everyone must have - a cute clutch. Bring beauty tools along. When you pack your clutch for a night of celebrating, make sure to include the necessities. Stay shine-free and party picture ready with pressed powder. Also include a small toothbrush and a travel sized toothpaste, such as ARM & HAMMER(tm) Advance White with Stain Defense. Baking soda gently removes plaque and surface stains with a deep cleaning action, while the Stain Defense(tm) technology helps prevent new stains from setting. Slip in a concealer, color for your lips and a small comb for quick touch-ups and you're ready to go out and celebrate the season. Holiday photos and family gatherings may not always call for a glitzy look but you still need to look your best. Look great all season by taking care of yourself. Stay hydrated and use plenty of moisturizer to give your skin a healthy glow. Keep your hair looking its best by using a great conditioner weekly throughout the party season. Follow these tips and you will be ready for any event this holiday season.

Tips for a clean house during the holidays (Family Features) - Scrambling to tidy up the house before, during and after the arrival of holiday houseguests is one tradition that many Americans would like to simply forget. Between shopping for gifts, cooking elaborate meals, and reconnecting with loved ones, keeping the house clean can seem like the one chore that never gets checked off the holiday to-do list. "Being a part of the families' homes for more than 80 years, we know that families want to spend more time together during the holidays," said Samuel Monnie, Director of Brand Management for Kenmore Floor Care Appliances. "Breaking your cleaning tasks down into a few easy steps can help you to spruce up your space, while still having plenty of time to enjoy the season." The home cleaning geniuses at Kenmore have several simple ideas for a clean, healthy house during the holidays: Don't sweat the small stuff. Focus your energy on the areas guests spend the most time in, like the family room, kitchen and guest baths and bedrooms. Don't let allergies spoil the holiday cheer. Deep clean carpets and other allergy-ridden areas with the Kenmore Intuition Upright Vacuum: a HEPA filter combined with the HEPA cloth dust bag captures 99.97 percent of all particles down to .3 microns in size, keeping irritating allergens at bay. The vacuum also includes the Pet Handi Mate attachment that lets you quickly remove pet hair from furniture and more. See Clean House, Page 18

stick. Place your gift into each cup, insert lollipop with tag at the top, and your gift is ready to give. Gift Box Wrap ribbons or a strip of printed paper with yarn adhered on top around the middle of a box. Using two prints in the stack, cut out an assortment of holly leaves (one color for the top set and another color for the bottom). Layer them together in a round flower shape, adhering leaves in place. Add a red glass bead to the center of each flower. Cut a tag from the tag and icon print in the stack. Hand print the recipient's name and adhere the tag to the side of the flower. Repeat as needed for additional boxes.

Gift Baskets Aren’t What They Used To Be Typically when we think of gift baskets, the first thing that comes to mind is fruit. How boring! With a little creativity, you Zillions of Gifts & can design a gift basket to dazzle your loved one no matter who they are or what their interests might be. You just have to think outside of the box or basket, so to speak. Here’s how to put it all together. The first step in designing a successful Stocking Stuffers. gift basket is to choose a subject or combination of subjects that interests the recipient. Next, you need an appropriate Right here in your very own backyard. container to hold the gift or gifts. The container should be associated with the type of gifts it will enclose or decorative in its own right. A cardboard box won’t do. From there, it’s just a matter of filling the container with the appropriate items. Here are some ideas: • Gym bag—for the guy or gal who likes to work out. Fill it with towels, shampoo, hand weights or a gym membership. • Ice bucket—for the wine connoisseur. A nice bottle of red wine and a bottle opener are all that is needed, though you might throw in a brick of cheese and some French bread. • Backpack—for the outdoor enthusiast or bookworm. For the former, fill it with a water bottle, compass, topographical map, first-aide kit and a hiking book. For the latter, fill it with the latest copies of books by their favorite author. • Bucket—for just about anyone. Fill it with everything from cleaning supplies to gardening supplies or tools. Don’t forget to throw in a pair of gloves. • Zippered makeup bag—for girls. This pretty little bag could contain beads and art supplies for a little girl or jewelry for an older girl. • Guitar case—for the music enthusiast. Fill it with their favorite tunes—CDs or cassettes—even a Top ’40s Hit book. Or you could place a gift certificate inside and let them pick out their own music. It’s the presentation that counts. • Bread box—for anyone who loves to cook. Fill it with all kinds of gourmet foods Angela Goretskiy or kitchen gadgets. • Canister set—for anyone. Depending on the design, this can hold anything from food items to 70 Worthington Rd., fishing gear. • Toolbox—for your favorite toolman. Fill it with tools, or for a really big surprise something other than Huntington, MA 01050 tools. • Tackle box—for the angler. Filled with fishing gear, it’s another obvious container. Is Honda un-'Fit' to park in garage BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 2007 Honda Fit. A couple of years ago, I got a recall notice that said there was a defect in a part in the door and that the Fit might catch fire because of it. A fix was in the works, but Honda suggested that Fit owners not park their vehicles inside the garage until after the part was replaced. Interestingly, the fires were caused by water getting into the door when it
rains ... outdoors ... where Honda wanted us to park our Fits. Ignoring the fact that the fires are caused by rain, I parked my Fit outside until I got the warranty work done to fix the problem. Last week, I got another letter from Honda stating (ahem) that the first fix didn't work quite as planned, and that a new fix will be rolled out soon. In the meantime, they suggested that 2007 Fit owners not park their vehicles in the garage, since they might catch fire. They said to

TOM: Yeah, that is a conundrum, isn't it? Honda did, in fact, recall some 140,000 2007 and 2008 Fits because water, or a spilled Starbucks Venti Frappuccino, could get inside the door when the window is open, work its way down and corrode the master window switch. RAY: Window motors

This week’s featured pets available for adoption:
INDY
Hi, my name is Indy, and I am really timid. I did not have a very good start in life and that left me frightened of people. If you give me time, can be patient with me, and gentle, then you are that person I have been looking for all my life. I just need someone to love me, and because I am scared, it will take a very special person with a lot of love to assure me that I can trust you; trust is a big issue with me. I am a 2 1⁄2 yr old male, short haired lab mix. If you have the patience to come and visit me a few times and let me get to really know you before you take me home with you, I know we can be life long buddies. Please just give me time. And may I say to everyone at this Holiday season, thank you for coming to the shelter and adopting so many of my friends here. I hope someone will see it in their heart to adopt me.
BUBBA
Hello from Bubba, and here at the shelter they call me cuddles sometimes cuz that is what I love to do the most; cuddle. And I hear them say that I am very affectionate; I don’t know what that means but they smile at me when they say it so I know it is something good. I am about 2 1⁄2 yrs old and I am a Staffordshire terrier that just loves to play outdoors any time of the year. I can also lay on the couch with you and we could be the very best of friends. I would really love that. I like people, but here at the shelter they think I would be best in a house where there were no children under 10, and that is simply because of my size. I am not fat or anything, it is just that I am solidly built and would feel terrible if I ever knocked a small child down by mistake, cuz I would never do anything like that on purpose. I also want to wish you all a happy holiday season, and thank you for adopting us!

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, ćF 8FTUĕFME /FXT has been providing readers with “hyper local news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, 5IF 8FTUGJFME /FXT provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
