Classes are offered weekly with specific workshops scheduled throughout the year. Currently, the Creative Arts Center is forming classes in basketmaking, chair caning, beginner knitting, advanced knitting cables and bobbles, rug hooking, and rug braiding. Don't Buy Another Gift Until You Have Given Yourself The True Gifts of The Season... IVE YOURSELF TIME.
It’s important to remember that you have a right to be upset. Everyone who loves you respects this right so don’t be so hard on yourself. Take as much time “out” as you need.
GNORE OBLIGATIONS.
Don’t feel obligated to do anything you don’t feel up to doing. If you have locked yourself into prior commitments, it’s o.k. to say “no.” Your friends and family will understand, so be sure to give yourself permission to change your mind.
IND FRIENDS TO CONFIDE IN.
Lean on the shoulders of those who love you and let them provide encouragement. Don’t feel bad about unloading your emotions on them. They want to help you. You need only tell them how.
RY NEW TRADITIONS.
There’s nothing wrong with adapting a new set of holiday rituals. Why not incorporate a special ceremony to commemorate the life of your loved one? Or consider honoring another endeared family member with the previous roles of your deceased loved one. Know that it’s o.k. to change the rules.
TOP OVEREXTENDING YOURSELF.
The Hurt You Are Feeling Is A Reflection Of The Love You Shared
Don’t exhaust yourself by preparing extravagant meals or overspending. As you grieve, you of all people deserve to relax. Your family and friends appreciate the time they can spend with you. They don’t need or want you to overextend yourself.

The classes are not college-accredited but are open to the community to provide an opportunity to gain new skills and enjoy creating artwork using a variety of mediums. “The Westfield State University Downtown Art Gallery is expanding its horizons and introducing additional programming,” said curator Faith Lund. “We are very excited and look forward to our collaboration with the Westfield Creative Arts Center.” There is a membership fee of $50 per year, which translates into a $20 savings for each class taken throughout the year. Tuition for each class varies depending on the length and duration of the class. Students in the stained glass class will be able to use tools and glass provided by the instructors for a materials fee. Other classes that require supplies will have a materials list that students can obtain upon registering for the class. It’s a fantastic opportunity for concerned individuals to help innocent animals without having to make a separate trip to their area Animal Shelter or Humane Society” said Rocco Falcone, president and CEO. Here is how the program works: Customers make donations of much needed pet food at their local Rocky’s Ace Hardware store, specially marked signs and a collection basket will guide customers to the collection area. The stores, will then in turn collect all donations and drive them to their locally chosen charity. Nutro Pet Foods has partnered with Rocky’s in donating over $1,500 worth of premium dog and cat food to kick start the program. Donations will be delivered directly to the Shelter or Humane Society on or about December 24. Last year, the second annu-
al pet food drive resulted in over 6,500 pounds of food and many toys, pet beds and other needed accessories being donated to a long list of worthy humane societies and animal shelters. “This year our drive has been lengthened by one week, every year we increase the amount donated, thereby helping even more neglected animals, still, this year we will strive to surpass last years’ collection” said Director of Marketing and Advertising Geoffrey Webb.

project.” A graph on the library window will mark the school’s progress in achieving their goal of collecting 100 items. In addition to providing a service to the community, the hands-on project offers students learning opportunities in art and design (poster making), English Language Arts (writing poster content, writing and performing a skit for the school, and writing speeches to present to each classroom) and mathematics (computing and charting the progress the class is making toward their goal). Items being collected include art supplies, puzzles, new electric razors, wallets/ change purses, shampoo, sunglasses, large print crosswords and word search books, Kleenex, clothing items, popcorn, planting soil, and much more. A complete list is posted at the school, and in the Gateway e-newsletter Breaking News (www.grsd.org/ > News > Breaking News). Getting your home ready for winter (Family Features) The change in seasons should bring about more than just a change of wardrobe. It's important to check out your appliances and home systems now in order to help prevent unnecessary repairs when you need those systems the most. To help you get your home ready for the winter, American Home Shield, one of the nation's leading providers of home warranty services, offers some tips to help you maintain your heating unit and plumbing system to ensure they're ready before the temperatures drop: To prepare the heating system: Have your system professionally cleaned and inspected. said Dave Quandt, Senior VP of Field Services for American Home Shield. "Unfortunately, if regular maintenance doesn't take place and a system or appliance fails, it's usually at the time of need and you're left with a crisis which can require a quick and more expensive decision." Taking these steps can help you keep your home systems in good working order. But even with the best care, unexpected things can happen. Home warranties are an excel-
lent choice for those who want to help avoid unexpected repair costs in the event that a covered system or appliance breaks down. To help home warranty customers find repair help when they need it, American Home Shield has the largest contractor network in the industry, with over 11,000 pre-screened, approved and independently insured home service contractors, saving homeowners the time and stress of finding the right contractors. Today with Jay Remembrances of JFK By JAY BERGER Last week, the collective media covered the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Everyone who had any connection with the late President had their time in front of the cameras or in the print media. It brought back the memories of the two times I had personal contact with him— once for a little while, and the other time, fleetingly. The first meeting was back in the late 40’s or early 50’s. I had graduated, but was a few credits short of my diploma. I took courses at Boston University night school while JAY BERGER working during the day. My military service time equaled take as many course credits as three years; therefore, once I I could (even through the enrolled, I was determined to summer) so that I could gradHANDGUNS SOLD ONLY TO PERMIT HOLDERS & POLICEMEN

uate and start earning an income. I was in a fraternity at UMass, so I checked for frat houses in Boston. Sure enough, there was one connected with BU in Brookline. When I called, I found that a room was available during the summer. Once I arrived, I found that they had lots of room. There were only four of us. Each of us was working and taking night classes, so we really only saw each other at quick meals or on the weekends. One hot, sweltering Saturday, the four of us were on the front porch cooling off with a can of beer. A young man in pants, white shirt, clipped-down tie and open collar saw us and approached. He announced, “I’m Jack Kennedy, I live a couple of blocks over from you. I’m running for US Congress, House of Representatives. Do you have a minute?” Of course we did. He came up on the porch and pulled up a chair. “Boy, I’d love a beer, but I better not approach anyone with beer on my breath. Maybe you have a soda or water?” We did and got him a Coke. He began to tell us about himself and what he wanted to do in Congress, but we quickly told him that we were students from out of town and not eligible in his district. JFK waved that idea off. “I’m getting a rest, recharging my batteries and possibly if you run into people from my district—neighbors, co-workers, teachers—tell them about me.” After a few minutes, he was gone. Move up several years. I was married and Kitty and I were visiting with my sister Marilyn and her husband David. They had moved to the Fort Stevens section of Washington, D.C. I had called our Congressman, Edward Boland, and he had arranged for us to get a tour of the White House, lunch at the House of Representatives

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, ćF 8FTUĕFME /FXT has been providing readers with “hyper local news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, 5IF 8FTUGJFME /FXT provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
