‘A Balancing Act’ Presentation WESTFIELD - The Council On Aging is combining the monthly “Live and Learn” healthy lifestyle series with a special research project on balance that Dr. Melissa Roti from the Westfield State University Movement Science Department is conducting. The risk of falling is greater for older adults if physical and cognitive functioning decline. Therefore, prevention should address both areas. One factor that may negatively influence physical and cognitive functioning is hydration status or how much fluid a person drinks. Dr. Roti’s research project will examine the relationship between hydration and balance in older adults. Join Dr. Roti at the Senior Center on Thursday, February 13 at 10 a.m. for her presentation, “A Balancing Act.” She’ll discuss factors that affect balance as well as outline her research project for any senior who would like to be a subject. Participants will complete some questionnaires regarding food/fluid intake and physical/cognitive function; provide a single urine sample; and perform a balance assessment. The information gathering and balance testing will take place in March at the Westfield Senior Center. The students in the Gerokinesiology class will administer the balance tests as a practical exam for a grade. Feel free to contact Dr. Roti for more information about the research project at mroti@westfield. ma.edu or 572-5665. No sign-
ups are necessary for Dr. Roti’s “A Balancing Act” session on February 13. The Westfield Senior Center is located at 40 Main Street. Free parking is available in the Stop & Shop lot or, for no more than three hours, in the municipal lot behind Bank of America.

Refrigerators and freezers must be in working order, clean and empty, with an inside measurement of between 10 and 30 cubic feet — standard size for most units. A maximum of two units per household per calendar year will be accepted. The program runs yearround with a $50 rebate, but the special $100 rebate only lasts through February 28. AMVETS Seeking New Members RUSSELL - We are looking for veterans who are interested in helping out the community and of course other veterans. Last year we had a successful year as we marched in parades, put on dinners and clover drives, and helped out families. You say what is the AMVETS? The AMVETS is a Veteran’s Service Organization dedicated to serving our fellow veterans and our communities. For more than 60 years, AMVETS has been a staunch advocate of providing American’s veterans with the benefits and services they’ve earned through honorable military service. Unlike other veteran’s service organizations who restrict membership to service dates or theaters of
operation, membership to AMVETS is open to ALL honorably discharged veterans and to those still serving in any service branch including reserve and guard units, and also merchant marines. Check out http://www.amvets. org/ for more info. You may also contact cbean24@verizon.net to join locally, or to set up a post in your community.

Southampton Lions WESTFIELD The Southampton Lions Club is now holding its meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Westwood Restaurant in Westfield. This robust group is currently comprised of 36 men and women from Northampton, Easthampton and Southampton and membership is open to residents 18 and older from any city or town in Western Massachusetts. Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their communities by conducting service projects and raising funds to help those in need wherever need exists. Part of a worldwide organization of more than 1.5 million members, the Lions motto is “We Serve.” Lions Clubs across the state donate more than $1 million to Massachusetts Eye Research, but also conduct service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, community welfare, improved hearing and
work with those who are physically and mentally impaired. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion but all have one thing in common: They enjoy helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Any resident interested in joining this local Lions Club is most welcome to come to a meeting as a guest to talk with others about the work of Lionism and get to know the benefits of becoming a member.

It takes only two hours per week and volunteers are reimbursed for their gas mileage. There is no charge to seniors for the service which is funded by the Westfield Community Development Block Grant program, Sarah Gillett Services for the Elderly, the
Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and private donations. For more information, contact Fran Aguda at the Senior Center at 562-6435.

A Gardener's Winter (Family Features) - There may not be a lot you can do in your garden during the winter months, especially if you're in a colder part of the country. But there is plenty that you can do right now that will keep you connected to the garden you love while helping you prepare to get your hands dirty in the spring. Evaluate the structure of your garden. The human body has a skeleton that gives it
structure. The garden has a similar framework which is made up of the permanent and structural items and plantings. Trees, shrubs, paths, ponds, arbors, trellises and benches are all part of a garden's bones. And with few leaves to get in the way, winter is a good time to see how your garden's framework is holding up. Study your garden's bones from all vantage points. Look at tree and shrub sizes

and see which ones have gotten too big for their current location. Do they need to be moved or will a good pruning bring them back into scale? Are there unattractive areas, such as the house foundation or a fence, that need something to screen them off? Examine the lines created by garden bed edges, sidewalks and the driveway. Do they help create a natural visual flow from one area to another? Beds may need some reshaping, and the hard lines of a sidewalk may need to be softened with plantings and mulch. Make sure you have plenty of winter interest. With many plants dying back for the winter, gardens can be uninspiring, to say the least. Gaping holes in the landscape, flattened, nondescript areas and a distinct lack of color are signs that you need to perk things up for the winter. Evergreen conifers come in all shapes and sizes, and they are not all just green. They add height, texture, color and scent to an otherwise dull landscape - and they look great in the snow. Look for interesting combinations of shapes and colors, keeping your garden's particular sun and water conditions in mind. When the leaves fall off of some plants, a beautiful new sight is revealed. Whether it's
the brightly colored branches of a red- or yellow-stemmed dogwood shrub, or the beautifully peeling bark of a river birch, the colors and textures of branches can look great in a winter garden. Look for architectural features to add to the landscape. Arbors, trellises, bird baths and garden art can catch the winter light, create intriguing shadows and frame interesting views. ter interest is to resist the urge to cut back the perennial grasses and plants that have gone dormant. The feathery fronds of pampas grass glow in a winter sunrise, and the dried blossoms of a sedum 'Autumn Joy' catch snow and attract small birds. What do you have that brings some subtle beauty to the garden? Dream, plan, and dream some more. Load up on seed and plant catalogs, research what will work in your area, sketch out new ideas, think through plant rearrangements, and have fun making plans. When spring time finally arrives, you'll be ready to turn your winter dreaming into reality.

Old car is having trouble with its get-up-and-go BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 1979 Jeep CJ-7 with a 5-liter V-8 engine. The ignition switch is the type commonly used in vehicles of this vintage, and it's located on the steering column. It has an "accessoryonly" position; an ignition-on, "run" position; and a spring-loaded, "crank" position, which activates the starter

motor as long as you hold the key there. When I go to start the engine, I turn the ignition switch to the "crank" position, and the starter motor cranks normally. But the engine will not start until after I release the key and it springs back to the ignition-on, "run" position. I wired a remote starter switch directly into the starter solenoid and tried starting the car with that. And as long as the ignition switch
was in the "run" position, I could make the starter motor crank and the engine fire up normally while the starter motor was still turning. Any ideas? -- Michael RAY: We were just trying to remember the last time we saw a '79 CJ-7 in the shop, Michael. TOM: We couldn't remember, so we also took a moment to thank the automotive deities for that small
blessing. RAY: The first thing I'd suspect and test would be a bad ignition switch in the steering column. TOM: What you want to do is test that "crank" position. When the key is in the crank position, both the starter motor and the coil are supposed to get power. RAY: The starter motor, obviously, gets power to crank the engine and get

You're obviously getting juice to the starter motor in the "crank" position, but maybe not to the coil. TOM: You can find out with a test light. You obviously have some basic skills, since you hooked up a remote starter without setting your car on fire ... yet. So hook up the light between the negative terminal of the battery and the positive (ignition) side of the coil. Then turn the key to "crank." My guess is that nothing will light up. RAY: That suggests that the ignition switch is bad. So your next step would be to try a new switch. But, as you know and undoubtedly toss and turn at night thinking about, changing the ignition switch

in the CJ-7 is a pain the rear differential. TOM: So try a new switch without installing it first. You should be able to reach under the steering
column, unplug the wires that go into the existing switch and then plug those wires into your new switch, which you'll leave dangling from the wires for now. RAY: Then use a screwdriver to turn the new switch and see what happens. If it works, you can then remove the steering wheel and all that, and install the new switch permanently. TOM: Or just leave it dangling. I think that's a nice touch on a '79 CJ. Good luck, Michael. *** It's NEVER cheaper in the long run to buy a new car. Want proof? Easy Ways to Eat Like an Athlete (Family Features) It is common to pair an exercise routine with a plan to cut calories and improve eating habits. While this good old fashioned approach to getting in shape is a smart and healthy one, it's important that your new diet provides adequate nutrition to fuel your exercise. Food is your body's energy source, and giving yourself a boost of energy before your workout is a sound strategy for powering your workout. Afterward, you will have depleted a good portion of your energy reserves, so it's important to refuel postworkout, as well. While your doctor or a nutritionist can help you
determine your body's exact needs based on your physical activity level, age and body type, you can get started keeping these tips in mind: Create an eating plan that incorporates carbohydrates and protein, as well as fat in moderation. Carbohydrates are what the body converts into glucose, which in turn, muscles use for energy. Protein slows the absorption of carbs, prolonging your body's access to the energy they provide. Your body needs moderate amounts of fat, too, which can be found in a wide range of low-fat foods such as milk and lean meats. Aim to incorporate each of these food categories into every meal.
Timing when you eat will affect how much energy you have to exercise. A small snack before you get started may give you the power you need for a successful workout. Before beginning a workout, start with a warmup. Rather than static stretches (holding a stretch for a period of time), which can actually have an adverse effect on your muscles, incorporate a dynamic stretching routine with more movement to get blood flowing, increase muscle temperature and kick-start your nervous system. Weather forecasting improvements By JAY BERGER “Everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it.” That old “chestnut” soon will drop by the wayside. This past year we have seen many weather-related tragedies. A number of tornado-related deaths and destructions in the Midwest and south, and the horrendous toll wrought by Hurricane Sandy—just to name two of the most violent storms. The United States House of Representatives is close to passing a bill entitled “The Weather Forecast Improvement Act.” This act—when it passes, clears the Senate and attains the Presidential signature— would help in some significant areas. Tornado forecasting right now gives people 15-20 minutes of warning. With more help from satellites, along with cooperation from all parts of global warning, this can expand the warning to over an hour. If one follows weather forecasts, the announcer will note that the Weather Channel’s model says that, “The storm will go directly north and hit us, but the European model says that it will veer eastward and skip
by us.” Then there is a Japanese model, which clashes with the Weather Channel regarding weather on the west coast. Under the new legislation, our National Weather service, National Oceanic and Air Administration (NOAA), will cooperate with other modelers as well as private weather groups to narrow predicted weather that citizenry can rely on. The most recent few days, had predictions of 6-8 to 10 inches of snow. We all know

that we had a dusting. One forecaster citing the European Model said that the weather system would hug the coastline and we would get very little snow. Perhaps this would improve under new guidelines. Lead times for tornado warnings have not been updated since the early 1990s. When Congress passes the new bill, and forecasting gets somewhat more consolidated and newer satellites are sent up, we should see less destruction and potential casualties. Many years ago, I was doing some book reporting on Kitty Broman’s show on top of Provin Mountain at Channel 22. John Quill was the forecaster for the station. He did his own forecasting with his own instruments. Now, the forecasters have all sorts of input from satellites and the National Weather Services, as well as private weather forecast companies. John seemed to be as accurate then as they are now. Let us hope that with the passage of this important act, that all of us will benefit from the advance knowledge of impending hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, northeasters and all the myriad weather systems that plague our lives. As I keep telling Kitty when she looks at our large thermometer on the rear deck and it reads zero-degrees, “Spring is just around the corner.”

Easy Ways
Continued from Page 18 While working out, and throughout the day, stay hydrated. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day, and more if your workouts are strenuous or lengthy. Also avoid caffeine, which may give you a short-term boost but actually dehydrates your body. Within one hour of finishing your workout, refuel your muscles with a dairy-based protein beverage. Milk contains high-quality protein and essential amino acids that can be particularly beneficial in building and maintaining muscle mass when combined with exercise. Several recent studies suggest low-fat milk after exercise can help increase lean muscle. "Milk is an excellent source of natural protein," said Blake Atkinson, director of brand management for Shamrock Farms. "For people looking to build and tone lean muscle, a smart addition to their post-workout nutrition is a beverage that contains calcium, vitamin D and potassium, all of which are essential nutrients naturally found in milk." One example is the new Rockin' Refuel Lean Recovery, a protein beverage made with 100 percent real milk has the recommended 2:1 carb to protein ratio for muscle recovery. The beverage offers 17 grams of high quality protein with no sugar added. Just as you need to give your car gas to make it go, your body needs fuel to perform its best, especially when you're starting a new fitness program. Proper nutrition will give you the energy you need to create new healthy, active habits to last all year long. For additional tips to help you manage nutrition along with your new fitness routine, visit www.rockinrefuel.com.

Wild and Scenic Westfield River WESTFIELD - The Wild and Scenic Westfield River turns 20 years old and the Watershed Suitcases are out and about in local Libraries and Town Halls to celebrate. They are “Traveling the Watershed”, inspiring community members to take a second look at the Westfield River and join the Wild and Scenic volunteers for trainings and workdays for 2014, our 20th year of having been honored with Wild and Scenic designation. The suitcases are designed and painted by local artists and are chock full of information and ideas for adventure. There are reference books, maps, DVD’s, guidebooks and brochures. If you have a location within the ten towns with Wild & Scenic designation or in neighboring towns where the suitcases might be hosted, call Meredyth Babcock 413 623-2070. Where are the suitcases now? They are at the Savoy Town Hall, the Huntington Library, Chesterfield Library, Chester Library and at the Notchveiw reservation in Windsor MA. Not sure if your town has Wild & Scenic Designation? Visit our newly updated website www.westfieldriverwildscenic.org.
