ing the monthly “Live and Learn” healthy lifestyle series with a special research project on balance that Dr. Melissa Roti from the Westfield State University Movement Science Department is conducting. The risk of falling is greater for older adults if physical and cognitive functioning decline. Therefore, prevention should address both areas. One factor that may negatively influence physical and cognitive functioning is hydration status or how much fluid a person drinks. Dr. Roti’s research project will examine the relationship between hydration and balance in older adults. Join Dr. Roti at the Senior Center on
Thursday, February 13 at 10 a.m. for her presentation, “A Balancing Act.” She’ll discuss factors that affect balance as well as outline her research project for any senior who would like to be a subject. Participants will complete some questionnaires regarding food/fluid intake and physical/cognitive function; provide a single urine sample; and perform a balance assessment. The information gathering and balance testing will take place in March at the Westfield Senior Center. The students in the Gerokinesiology class will administer the balance tests as a practical exam for a grade. Feel free to contact Dr.

Veterans Donation Drive WESTFIELD - Students from the South Middle School QUEST Program announce they are starting a donation drive for the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke. The students in the QUEST program are organizing it, after a discussion on community service projects and helping the community, sparked their interest. The project is being guided by teachers but organized and worked on by the students of the program with the assistance of the Peer Leadership club. The students started the drive to help the veterans of the Soldiers’ Home and help make it a more comfortable atmosphere. The students think this project is important for the community to help those who served our country and to bring awareness of the needs of the Soldiers’ Home. We would like to thank Todd Cieplinski from MoFroYo for his help on this project. Donation dive will be held until February 14, and drop boxes will be located at the South Middle School Main Office on West Silver St. and MoFroYo, Frozen Yogurt, on East Main Street.

Experiencing the Mandala WESTFIELD - Creative Arts will hold Experiencing the Mandala, one day art workshops, at the Westfield State University Downtown Art Gallery. The workshops will be held Saturdays February 15, March 8 and 22, and April 12 and 26 from noon to 3 p.m. This workshop is an introduction to the idea of using the mandala, a symmetrical design, as a form of selfexpression and personal insight. The word mandala is from the Sanskrit word meaning “sacred circle.” Mandalas are considered Eastern in origin, however, examples of them are found in all cultures and all religions. There also are examples of mandalas in nature like in flowers. The class will be taught by Peg Considine, a multi-disciplined artist with a focus on drawing and painting. The cost to attend is $25 for nonmembers plus supplies. Students will be instructed to create their own mandala using paper on which a symmetrical line drawing is the starting point. They are provided with a range of paints and drawing materials to help develop their mandalas. A full schedule of class dates and times can be found at www.westfieldcreativearts. com. The Mass Save® appliance recycling program encourages residential electric customers to reduce their energy use by recycling old refrigerators and freezers. Many people don’t realize older refrigerators and freezers require as much as three times the amount of energy as newer, more efficient models. By participating in the program, customers will receive the special $100 rebate and save as much as $150 a year by lowering their household energy usage. Refrigerators and freezers must be in working order, clean and empty, with an inside measurement of between 10 and 30 cubic feet — standard size for most units. A maximum of two units per household per calendar year will be accepted. The program runs yearround with a $50 rebate, but the special $100 rebate only lasts through February 28. Customers can schedule a free home pickup by calling 1-877-545-4113 or visiting www.Masssave.com/Recycle.

Southampton Lions Club is now holding its meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Westwood Restaurant in Westfield. This robust group is currently comprised of 36 men and women from Northampton, Easthampton and Southampton and membership is open to residents 18 and older from any city or town in Western Massachusetts. Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their communities by conducting service projects and raising funds to help those in need wherever need exists. Part of a worldwide organization of more than 1.5 million members, the Lions motto is “We Serve.” Lions Clubs across the state donate more than $1 million to Massachusetts Eye Research, but also conduct service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, community welfare, improved hearing and work with those who are physically and mentally impaired. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion but all have one thing in common: They enjoy helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Any resident interested in joining this local Lions Club is most welcome to come to a meeting as a guest to talk with others about the work of
Lionism and get to know the benefits of becoming a member.

sadie Our beautiful Sadie came to the shelter at about 7 months old & was adopted almost immediately. However, her owner fell on hard times & had to move & the only place they could find, the landlord said no dogs. They were heart broken when they had to bring their Sadie to our shelter, Sadie was very sad for quite some time. She has adjusted pretty good but she was always “part of the family”, she misses that. Here is a wonderful, loving, beautiful girl, who has now been at the shelter for a while. Sadie is about 2 1/2 yrs old. In the summer she loves water & will play in a small children’s pool, or with the hose all day if you let her. Sadie is fun & funny & needs to be a part of a family again as she knows that role really well. She is a warm, cuddly, housebroken Staffordshire terrier with a good background & temperament. We hope you find it in your heart to come & visit Sadie, maybe take her home where once again she can be where she belongs as the family dog.

bubba Hello from Bubba, here at the shelter, sometimes they call me cuddles cuz that is what I love to do the most; cuddle. I hear them say that I am very affectionate; I don’t know what that means but they smile at me when they say it so I know it is something good. I am about 2 1/2 yrs old, I am a Staffordshire terrier that just loves to play outdoors anytime of the year, & run in the snow, this winter I got to do that a lot. I can also lay on the couch with you & we could be the very best of friends. I would really love that. I love people, they think I would do really good in a house where there were no children under 10, simply because of my size. I am not fat or anything, it is just that I am solidly built & would feel terrible if I ever knocked a small child down by mistake, I would never do that on purpose. I hear we are getting more snow, I would so love to get out, run & play in it. I have all my snow gear packed & ready to go; actually I am all packed & ready to go at any time. I hope you come by and visit, I will be waiting for you. With the winter months here, we are in need of canned dog food for all our canine guests. Thank you from all of us at the Westfield Regional Animal Shelter; a Shelter that Westfield can be very proud of.
get off the ground. “A mentor can help navigate the complex challenges that often come with being a business owner, and the guidance from someone who has been there themselves can be a real asset.” Beyond the intangibles — access to knowledge and the confidence that comes from having a respected colleague rooting for your success, for example — a mentor relationship can have a very real impact on your bottom line. In fact, 70 percent of small business owners who receive mentoring survive for five years or more, double the rate of those who do not. “Many small business owners feel like they’re all alone when it comes to facing challenges,” said Tim Davis, president of The UPS Store. “Getting help from an expert, or advice from another business owner who’s already experienced something similar, can be invaluable.” A mentor’s contributions can take many different forms, so it’s important to find a partner whose expertise and approach to business is similar to yours. Through organizations such as SCORE, small business owners can — at no cost — pull from a pool of more than 11,000 certified experts from every industry to find a mentor that fits their personal work style and needs. Before choosing a mentor, consider the following questions to help you find a match who can maximize your business potential: See Business, Page 18

www.theupsstore.com/ score. The free tool offers a survey to help small business owners plan and execute an effective marketing strategy. Family First John Davila, third generation architect and founder and CEO of LBCT Architectural Engineering and Design, learned everything he knows about architecture from his mentor. In 1919, John’s grandfather started an architecture business in Scotland. He mentored John’s father for many years, who eventually took over the business and finally, when the time came, his knowledge and expertise were shared with John. “My father is my mentor, I took the knowledge from him to create my own business that incorporated some of his principles with my business goals,” said Davila. “Having a mentor helped prepare me for obstacles I faced as a small business owner.” Just like his father, John has found great joy in mentoring. John is currently mentoring a past client’s daughter who has interest in entering the architecture and design industry. John knows the importance of being educated in the field you are hoping to turn into a career and feels that a mentor’s experience is extremely helpful when making the transition of opening a business.

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
