Saturday Swimming WESTFIELD - Starting January 18, the Boys and Girls Club will now be opening their pool on Saturday mornings from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. for a public swim. Kids and adults of all ages are welcome to participate. The cost is only $5 per family. In addition to the public swim, the club will also be offering Saturday swimming lessons. For $30, kids ages 2.5 to 5 can take Tiny Bubbles swimming lessons for 4 Saturdays in a row from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. For $50, kids ages 6 and up can take swimming lessons for 4 Saturdays in a row from noon to 12:45 p.m. Participating children get to have fun and make new friends while they learn how to kick and paddle across the pool. The class is instructed as a whole, but due to the small class size each child is given individual one-to-one time depending on their needs and abilities. Children are taught how to properly breathe in the water and how to do simple dives. Most importantly, children are taught techniques to keep

them safe when they get close to the deep end. To enroll your child in swimming lessons, or to learn more about the club’s new Saturday swimming opportunities for children and adults, please contact Kellie Brown or Lerryn Godden at 413-5622301 or visit our website at www.BGCWestfield.org.

Topics will include the history and process of the legislature, the parliamentary role of the Clerk of the Senate and the future of the legislature. The CLS culminates with a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned and participate as “senators” in the

AMVETS Seeking New Members RUSSELL - We are looking for veterans who are interested in helping out the community and of course other veterans. Last year we had a successful year as we marched in parades, put on dinners and clover drives, and helped out families. You say what is the AMVETS? The AMVETS is a Veteran’s Service Organization dedicated to serving our fellow veterans and our communities. For more than 60 years, AMVETS has been a staunch advocate of providing American’s veterans with the benefits and services they’ve earned through honorable military service. Unlike other veteran’s service organizations who restrict membership to service dates or theaters of operation, membership to AMVETS is open to ALL honorably discharged veterans and to those still serving in any service branch including reserve and guard units, and also merchant marines. Check out http://www.amvets. org/ for more info. You may also contact cbean24@verizon.net to join locally, or to set up a post in your community.

Lions Clubs across the state donate more than $1 million to Massachusetts Eye Research, but also conduct service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research, community welfare, improved hearing and work with those who are physically and mentally impaired. Lions members come from every walk of life, age and persuasion but all have one thing in common: They enjoy

helping others. While the primary function of the Club is charitable, its members often find involvement in Lionism leads to improved networking with others in the community. Any resident interested in joining this local Lions Club is most welcome to come to a meeting as a guest to talk with others about the work of Lionism and get to know the benefits of becoming a member.

“Noodlers” Club WESTFIELD - During the morning hours, when children are busy studying at school, there is another group who refers to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Westfield as their second home. They have dubbed themselves the “Noodlers” and they have been active members since the building opened in 1991. From 7:30 a.m. till 10 a.m. this energetic group of senior citizens can be found walking in the gym, swimming laps or simply

splashing around in the pool. On any given week day 15 to 20 “Noodlers” can be found at the club enjoying their morning workout. Our “Noodlers” regularly organize coffee hours and holiday parties here at the club to celebrate the friendships they share. The club provides a friendly environment for adults and seniors to stay active and feel like they belong. Just like our youth members, our seniors refer to each other as their second family. With an annual membership

fee of $125.00 for adults and $99.00 for seniors, the club invites the community to take advantage of its resources. Anyone interested in adult and senior memberships and programs offered from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. please contact Lerryn at 562-2301.

Today with Jay: Growth and diversification of restaurants This past week, a good friend opened a barbecue restaurant in Southwick. After I sat down to a platter of “cowboy beans,” I thought back to my boyhood food experience and how many

changes have taken place. During the Great Depression, money quite tight, so there wasn’t much eating out. Our schedule at home was: breakfast, dinner and supper. The big meal was at noontime when the

factory whistle blew. I never learned about breakfast, lunch and dinner until much later in life. The one restaurant in town was at the local hotel. If my dad wanted to take my mom out to

celebrate an anniversary, it was at the local hotel. If we didn’t go out for an ice cream on a Sunday drive, it might be to a hot dog stand by the side of the road, or at a beachfront arcade. My first different food experience was on a train trip to Boston with my mom to see a doctor. After that visit, she found her way to Chinatown, and she introduced me to chow mein. That exotic food held me over for the next few years until I went to New York City for a youth conclave. One of our counselors took us to a kosher deli for a hot pastrami sandwich. I was moving up in the world. Coming out of the Depression, we saw the advent of a local “stainless steel diner” and at the same time, a “red-roofed” Howard Johnsons. By the time I was in the military, I was exposed to a large variety of foods. Southern cooking with chicken-fried steak, hash and a wide array of deepfried meals. Out on the west coast, there other local favorites, particularly fish platters. During the occupation of Japan, I encountered many Asian dishes. With the war over and my education complete, I saw an explosion of Italian restaurants, pizza parlors and Chinese food. Overseas travel, ocean cruise lines and high-speed jet planes made the world much smaller. Food tastes and an expanding economy brought more exciting and palate-pleasing foods closer and closer. French-themed food entered; German beer halls appeared; Thai and Greek foods emerged.

JAY BERGER Locally, a family restaurant closed down. Three weeks later it was a Vietnamese restaurant; six months after that it was a Turkish/Mediterranean establishment. Now a year or so later it is open for pizzas. I think that movies and television are responsible for the interest in different ethnic foods. At home, we watch the Food Network quite a bit. They show skilled chefs preparing foods that I never heard of, never ate, but look wonderful. Globalization gets blamed for a lot of our century’s woes, but it certainly has improved our ability to taste a number of foods that we never would have known about. Two days ago, we had lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant at the “X” in Springfield. Last night, we ordered take-out at a Chinese restaurant. This afternoon, we are going back for some barbecue and cowboy beans. Can some Gaucho Argentinean steaks be far behind?

When it comes to 21st century multimedia platforms, “hyper local” is a term you hear a lot. It’s not a new idea. In fact, The Westfield News has been providing readers with “hyper local” news coverage of Westfield, Southwick, and the Hilltowns all along. Television, radio and regional newspapers only provide fleeting coverage of local issues you care about. TV stations and big newspaper publishers, after years of cutbacks and mergers, frankly aren’t able to provide in-depth coverage of smaller markets anymore. But, day in and day out, The Westfield News provides consistant coverage of the stories you need to know about, that are important to your city, town, neighborhood and home.
