Blockbuster calories await summer moviegoers SPRINGFIELD – It’s summer blockbuster movie time and who doesn’t like to munch on some yummy treats while watching creepy-looking space invaders destroy the Earth or eat their sorrows away while “enjoying” a four-hanky movie? “The minute you enter the movie theater, you are tempted by the aroma of popcorn popping and faced almost immediately with the concession stand before you, which is too hard for many to resist. But, remember, in addition to the blockbuster movie on the screen, there’s also plenty of blockbuster calories at the

concession stand waiting for you,” said Paula SerafinoCross, RD, clinical dietitian at Baystate Medical Center. “You can eat much more than a day’s worth of calories in just two hours while sitting in the dark theater and enjoying your movie. Just as at home or in a restaurant, moderation and portion size is key. Think small, and don’t be persuaded to get that jumbo size popcorn or extralarge soda for just a few more pennies,” she added. If popcorn is a must, Serafino-Cross recommends a small bag with no buttery topping or additional salt

from the shaker. She noted depending on the theater chain, even a small popcorn can average around 400-670 calories. Also, depending on the size you choose, your popcorn treat can equal a single meal’s worth of calories with most large popcorn choices averaging upwards to See Calories, Page 11

Kids in hot cars – a deadly combination SPRINGFIELD — It’s a tragedy that is entirely preventable – leaving a child in a hot car. “A few minutes might not seem like a long time, but there are circumstances when it can mean the difference between life and death. As temperatures begin to heat up, children are at a serious risk for heat stroke when left alone even for a few minutes in a closed vehicle,” said Mandi Summers, co-coordinator, Safe Kids of Western Mass. headquartered at Baystate Children’s Hospital. Trends over the past few years indicate that these unfortunate and often deadly mishaps will probably rise in number again this year, says the National Safety Council.

Already in 2014 there have been some 10 child deaths attributed to heatstroke from being left alone in a hot car. According to estimates from San Francisco State University’s Department of Geosciences, since 1989 there have been at least 615 heatstroke deaths of children left in vehicles – that’s an average of 38 deaths per year with more than half of the total number involving children under the age of 2. Also, the National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration claims heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children under the age of 14. And, it doesn’t even have to be a scorching day for tragedy to strike, it can be relatively mild, noted Summers. “Ever notice how your car can be nice and warm even on a cool day? That’s because the inside of a vehicle can rise 19 degrees above the outside temperature in just 10 minutes. And, after

an hour, the temperature inside and outside of a vehicle can differ by 45 degrees or more – even if the window is left open a crack,” said Summers. “No one ever thinks this tragedy could strike them, and that is why it’s essential to get this message out, especially as the weather starts heating up,” she added. Heat is much more dangerous to children than it is to adults. “When left in a hot vehicle, a young child’s core body temperature may increase three to five times faster than that of an adult, which could cause permanent injury or even death,” said Dr. Ronald Gross, chief, Trauma, Acute Care Surgery and Emergency Surgery Services at Baystate Medical Center. He noted heat stroke occurs when the core body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Symptoms can include dizziness, disorientation, agitation, confusion, sluggishness, seizure, hot dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty, loss of consciousness, rapid heartbeat and hallucinations.

DELIVERED TO: Agawam, Blandford, Chicopee, Granville, Holyoke, Southwick, Springfield, Westfield, West Springfield, MA; E. Granby, Granby, Suffield, Simsbury, CT

“When anyone‘s core body temperature surpasses 104 degrees Fahrenheit to reach 107 degrees, the consequences are lethal,” said Dr. Gross. According to research conducted by San Francisco State University, more than half of these children were accidentally left behind in a closed, parked car by parents or caregivers, while nearly a third of these children were trapped while playing in a vehicle unattended. Sadly, one in five children who died were intentionally left in the vehicle by an adult. To reduce the number of deaths from heatstroke, Safe Kids suggests remembering the word ACT: A: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute, even if the window is left slightly open. And, make sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it, so kids don’t get in on their own and play in the car. C: Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, purse or cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you’re not following your normal routine. T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life. For more information about summer safety, call Safe Kids of Western Mass. headquartered at Baystate Children’s Hospital at 413-794-6510 or visit www.usa.safekids.org. So, if you choose to wash it all down with a soda, continue to think small. “It’s no secret that soda is filled with empty calories. Go small or choose a diet soda of any size, unsweetened ice tea if they have it, or even better, a healthy bottle of water,” said Serafino-Cross. On average, a small soda at the movies can equal as many as 14 teaspoons of sugar and about 200 calories, while thirsty drinkers opting for the large soda can ingest some 450 calories and nearly 30 teaspoons of sugar. Even better than opting for the small sizes, Serafino-Cross noted some movie houses offer smaller-sized kid combos consisting of a drink and popcorn. “Isn’t everyone a kid at the movies?” she said. When it comes to snacking on candy, who can resists those M&Ms, Gummy Bears, Milk Duds, Junior Mints, Sno Caps, Twizzlers (3-4 oz. packages) and a myriad of other packaged sugary treats? The plain truth is while yummy,

For example, a typical 3.1- oz. box of Sno Caps weighs in at 300 calories, while an 4-oz. bag of Reese’s Pieces has as many as 580 calories, 61 grams of sugar and 20 grams of saturated fat (more than the amount you need for the entire day!). If you really need to satisfy your sweet tooth, SerafinoCross suggests trying four Twizzlers for 133 calories and less than 1 gram of fat. “Don’t forget to brush your teeth after any sticky, sweet treats,” she said. The Baystate dietitian also suggested sharing the calories at the concession stand with a friend and splitting the popcorn and candy you purchase, noting to make it worth your while in calories, it’s best to

share smaller sizes than the largest option. As for popular ice cream snacks, and newer additions to the concession stand menu such as hot dogs and nachos, “forget them,” said the Baystate dietitian, who noted they, too, are high in fat and sodium, not to mention calories. As for special promotions at some theater chains that offer a free refill on a large popcorn or soda, “resist the urge to go back for more,” said SerafinoCross. “Above all else, don’t go into the movie theater hungry. Gadgets, Great Outdoors Can Co-Exist Advancements in technology over the last decade have children spending more time with gadgets and gizmos, and less time enjoying the great outdoors. In fact, kids are now indoors up to 10 hours a day. But kids’ increasing use of technology and opportunities to appreciate Mother Nature do not have to be mutually exclusive. The Importance of Outside Play A new report shows that kids’ media habits can both positively and negatively impact health, and provides real-world advice to help parents serve as positive role models and teach children to use technology in moderation. Kids need to be outside all year long, especially in the winter when days are short and we’re all a little more cooped up than usual. In addition to developing a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and the wildlife around them no matter where they live, it helps them

burn off energy, stay fit, and be mentally focused on all activities in their busy day. Screen Time Plus Green Time Technology can be a valuable tool to help families balance the lure of screen time with the importance of green time for kids. Today’s connected world enables children to experience nature in ways never before imagined. Use these ideas for combining technology with the outdoors: 1. Rely on technology to plan or inspire outdoor adventures. This can include anything – from finding great nearby hiking trails to interactive, outdoor treasure hunts. 2. Keep a record of outdoor experiences with the help of electronic photos, videos or an electronic journal. They’ll love the ability to share their experiences with family and friends. 3. When safe and practical, take hand-held devices outdoors to combine the best of both worlds ( just remember to plan for some fully unplugged time outside, too).

Find time to take a vacation from work SPRINGFIELD – What one little thing can achieve so many health and well-being goals from reducing stress to strengthening family relationships to improving your job

performance. The answer is: a vacation. If only Americans could take a hint from Europeans who rarely miss the chance for a relaxing vacation, averaging 25-30 vacation days

from work each year and managing to use most of those days. But, a new survey by Robert Half – a specialized staffing firm based out of Menlo Park, Calif. – shows 39 percent of workers this year won’t use all of the paid vacation time they’ve earned. Among those surveyed, 38 percent cited they are saving days in case they need them, while 30 percent are afraid of falling behind on the job. “We know that adequate rest and relaxation are essential for good mental and physical health,” said Dr. Stuart Anfang, medical director of Adult Outpatient Psychiatry at Baystate Medical Center. “Time off allows you to recharge, to reconnect with family and friends, and to refresh your mind and body.” For example, a survey several years ago by the Mind Body Center at the University of Pittsburgh, concluded that leisure time activities, such as taking a vacation, resulted in higher positive emotional levels and less depression among the 1,399 participants, who

had been recruited for studies on cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and other diseases. Additional benefits included lower blood pressure and smaller waistlines. But, when you do take time off this summer, it’s important to truly leave your work behind, and as Dr. Anfang recommends, “take a break from all your electronic distractions.” ”In our high-tech, Wi-Fi connected world of cell phones, texts and emails, it can be a challenge to disconnect from work and other responsibilities. Try unplugging for even just a few hours, or give yourself a day of electronic rest on a weekend or especially during vacation,” adds Anfang. “The e-mails and phone messages will still be there, and you can come back refreshed, and ready to respond with renewed energy, focus and attention.” Yet another survey from Hotwire.com – the American Travel Behavior Survey, concluded that 87 percent of Americans would prefer to take more leisure trips if they

felt they had the time and money to do so. “Summer vacations are especially popular because of great weather and school break for families. Even if you can’t take off lots of time or afford a big trip, spending a weekend day doing something fun - not just errands and chores - can really be helpful and healthy,” said Dr. Anfang. Where to go and what to do to decompress when you can’t afford the costs associated with a vacation from plane tickets, to eating out, to hotels, to the cost of gas? Consider the following: • Go camping • Visit a nearby lake to cool off and relax • Spend a day at a city or state park where there are often activities such as picnicking, swimming and more • Take day trips • Enjoy a “staycation” by hanging out in your own backyard next to your pool or lounging in a hammock and reading a good book. “You don’t necessarily have to go very far or spend a lot of your hard-earned money to take a vacation. What is important is to get away from your normal daily routine to recharge your batteries by leaving work back at the office, doing something you really enjoy, or spending quality time with family,” said Dr. Anfang.
