Wyben Fourth of July Parade The Community of Wyben will hold its annual Fourth of July parade on Wednesday, July 4th, 2018. The parade features antique cars, homemade floats, kids on bikes, and more. Line-up is at 6PM at the corner of Montgomery and North Roads. The parade will step-off at 6:30PM. The parade route will be down

Montgomery Rd. To West Road, and back down Montgomery Rd to the one room schoolhouse. This is a well attended, fun, old-time community parade. Not many of these left. Our Parade Marshals are Wyben residents Bill and Jane Boisseau. They and other family members created The 7 Bs restaurant in the location of the former Purple Onion. To their credit, it has become a popular meeting place and family friendly destination. They will be riding on their family float instead of in our “pace car.”

pieces were shipped by wheeled vehicles up Walnut Street to the Hillshops a mile away, where they were shaped, filed and forged as necessary. The muskets and rifles were then finished, assembled, and stored in buildings such as the Main Arsenal building. The stream which provided waterpower to the Watershops was the Mill River, a tributary of the larger Connecticut River. The workshops powered by the Mill River expanded and evolved over time as new technologies were developed. Water power was replaced by steam, which in turn was replaced by electric turbines; all of which were at the Watershops and powered by the Mill River. The Watershops remained in operation until 1968, when the Springfield Armory finally closed its doors The Watershops, though listed in the National Historic Register, were not included

in the National Historic Site but were sold to private owners who maintain it as an industrial site with extensive industrial rental opportunities. So although it is not possible to tour the Watershops, the buildings are still in existence. The Springfield Armory National Historic Site is the location of the nation’s first armory (1794 –1968) and was established by George Washington. The site includes historic grounds, buildings, and the world’s largest historic American military firearms collection. The park is open daily 9am – 5pm. There is ample parking and the event is wheelchair accessible. Ramapogue Women’s Club Ramapogue Women’s Club is offering two Continuing Education grants of $1,000 each to West Springfield residents currently enrolled fulltime in an accredited course of study at a college or technical institution. Applications must be received no later than Saturday, July 14. Eligibility for these grants will be based on financial need and scholastic achievement of the applicant. Only students who have not previously received a Ramapogue Women’s Club Continuing Education Grant are eligible for this year’s awards. Forms and further information may be obtained from the club’s scholarship chairman by calling 413-739-3762 or by mailing a request to Ramapogue Women’s Club, PO Box 372, West Springfield, MA 01090. In addition to the completed form, applicants are required to send the club an official transcript of grades and complete online free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Recognizing the need for financial assistance for students who have started a program of advanced study, the local women’s club has sponsored these grants since 1968. They are designed to recognize their progress. An independent committee of trustees reviews all applications and determines the recipients of the club’s Continuing Education Grants.
