In FY18, the council awarded nearly $20,000 in grants to support communitywide programming in a range of creative fields, spanning the natural sciences to fine arts. A list of past grantees and guidelines can be found at https://www.mass-culture. org/westfield. The next grant cycle will open in fall 2018, at which time, individuals, nonprofits, unincorporated organizations, public schools, and religious organizations are invited to apply for funds to assist in producing or continuing arts, humanities, or science centered programs that take place within Westfield city limits. Council members will be present at this regular meeting to hold a discussion and answer questions, as well as to hear feedback from the community on what they would like to see funding allocated for. The council takes feedback from the public on a yearly basis to ensure grant money is given to projects that benefit the public good.

Appalachian Trail talk at the Huntington Public Library The Huntington Public Library will be hosting a talk on the Appalachian Trail on Friday, June 15th at 6:00 P.M. Sam Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a life-long resident of Connecticut. He has two adult sons, both serving in the United States Air Force. As an avid outdoorsman, and finding the emptynest, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia. From there, he started walking north. With no prior backpacking experience, Sam set out on a 2180 mile, 14-state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as people, culture, and humanity at its finest. His stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country and its people.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15 marks the 13th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On this date each year, participants seek to raise awareness of the selfneglect, neglect, financial exploitation, and abuse suffered by elders. Cases of elder abuse are prolific in our society, with the number of reports increasing every year. Individuals over the age of 60 are often living in poverty,

SAVE WITH THE PENNYSAVER

and in today’s economic climate, cases of unlawful eviction and financial exploitation are also on the rise. Unfortunately, many elders suffer in silence. To help promote and raise awareness, you can show your support by: Wearing purple during the week prior to and on June 15, 2018. Reaching out to someone, age sixty (60) and over, to find out if they feel safe from abuse. If not, please call (800) 922-2275 to make a report. At the local level, Highland Valley Elder Services will be promoting this event providing education about different forms of abuse, neglect and self-neglect. The Protective Services team at Highland Valley investigates allegations of elders at risk, and work closely with community partners to ensure elders are safe in the community. The Highland Valley Protective Services Team will be presenting certificates of recognition to professionals in the

community who exemplify what it means to reduce risk for elders at home. This year we will honor Charlie Hayes, Officer James Damouras, and Mary MacIntyre for their dedication and for the valuable contributions they have made to stop elder abuse and alleviate risk. While taking the time to check on elders in your community, take the time to thank all of those individuals working hard to keep seniors safe. We appreciate every person working hard to do so. For more information or for any questions, please contact Julie Pearce, Protective Service Program Director at (413) 588-5761.

Best remembered as a “prolific golf course architect of the 20th century,” Crestview is known as the “gem of Western Massachusetts” with panoramic views of the Pioneer Valley and the Connecticut River. From its 553-yard par 5 Hole 2 over the water to a short chip uphill on the 171-yard par 3 Hole 14, the course is challenging enough that it played host to the PGA TOUR Travelers Championship Open Qualifier in 2015, the CT Section PGA Championship, several US Amateur qualifiers and, most notable, the LPGA Friendly’s Classic. The tournament will kickoff with registration and practice greens opening at 11:00 a.m. A course-side lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. until noon, with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The day will conclude with a reception, sponsored by Florence Bank, buffet dinner and awards ceremony. Other sponsors are Appleton Corp., Bacon Wilson, P.C., The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, and Springfield Thunderbirds Hockey Club.
